There was knock at the door. Mother answered it. It
was two more people, a woman and man. The woman
police officer said "Morning, I am Detective Sabrina
Duncan and the is Detective Pete Malloy. We're
investigating the police shootings last night and
want to ask your daughter a few questions."
"Please come in" said Mother. "This my daughter
Ellie. How are the two officers? Would you like some
coffee?"
Detective Malloy said "They'll both be all right,
just minor gun shot wounds. Thanks for your concern.
As for the coffee, none for me, but I know my partner

Mother said "Before you start to ask questions of my
daughter, she is aware of her civil rights, so if the
questions start going that direction, the question
here will end. Understand?"
"Sure do Ma'am, but I really don't think that is
going to be necessary. The officers who were here
last night were working on your complaint against one
Laticia Whaler. We have questions about this girl
Noelle" said Detective Duncan.
They two detectives asked what Ellie knew of Noelle.

Malloy looked at Duncan. She said "Uniform."
Detective Duncan drank her coffee. "Strictly off the
record. I can't figure how an apparently sweet girl
like this Noelle could go off like that. All having
to do with the cheer uniform. I guess it takes all
kinds."
Ellie said "Detective Duncan, if you haven't ever
been a cheerleader, you will never understand. When
you spend hours, days and years practicing for
appearances and games trying to instill a school
spirit in other students and you see them respond to
you and other cheerleaders, it makes you feel good
inside. It also give a person a sense of self worth,
the ability to 'take charge' if need be. That is what
it is all about. All cheerleaders aren't bubble
headed bimboes. Some people think of us as sex
objects, but I know some guys think women cops are
sexy in their uniforms. Does that stop them from
doing their job?"
Detective Duncan simply said "Touche'."
Malloy said " Thanks for your time and the coffee. If
there are any more questions, we'll be back."
That Saturday was a strange one. With the shootings,
and Laticia's arrest, Ellie was very confused. Some
much had happened in the last 12 hours, Ellie's head
was spinning. She did some laundry and cleaned her
room but that didn't ease her mind. Her mother spent
the morning making some calls. By afternoon, Ellie
did her homework from school.
At 4.30PM, Gerry called. He wanted to know if Ellie
wanted to go that night. Ellie replied that she
really didn't know, she still confused from the
morning's activities. But Gerry could come over he
wanted to.
Mother heard the phone ring. "Ellie, who was on the
phone dear?"
"Just Gerry, he wanted to go out tonight" she
replied.
"Well because of what happened last night, I you home
this weekend."
"Why mom?" Ellie asked.
"I talked to Lou this morning. He said in light of
the police shootings involving a Kingsley High
cheerleader, you problem with Laticia, the possible
extortion that was alleged against you, and my
problem with Ms. Nichols, he wants us to stay around
the house. He will be over for dinner. He wants to
ask you some questions."
"How about pizza tonight? I told Gerry he could come
over if he wanted to" Ellie said.
"Why not. A foursome for dinner" Mother said with a
smile.
Ellie smiled too. She needed to unwind a bit.
Lou showed up at 6.00PM, the same time Gerry did. The
introduced themselves while out in front. Lou asked
what he knew of the shootings. Gerry told what he
knew. Then Lou rang the doorbell. Ellie answered and
invited them in, Mother yelled hello from the
kitchen. Ellie said "Dinner is going to be real
formal, pizza."
Lou said "Thats fine with me. Company is more
important."
Gerry sat next to Ellie on the sofa. Lou asked her to
recount the events of the last 2 days. Ellie did
leaving out Ms. Able's slap. Lou took notes. After 30
minutes, the doorbell rang and the pizza delivery was
made, Mother paid for it. The plates and forks were
on the dining table, dinner was essentially buffet
style. Lou ate two pieces of pizza and said "As I see
it, it is your word against Laticia's on the
extortion aspect, in court that won't hold water. As

Ellie went and printed up a copy of the photo and
gave it to Lou.

"Worse?" asked Gerry.

jail for?", then his thoughts wandered off. "DAMN" he

"What?" asked Mother.
"The under age female in the case I was just talking
about, I wonder if it is this Noelle girl. I don't
remember the case specifics but I am willing to bet
it was her. Describe this Noelle for me?"
Ellie did.
"It has to be her. The description matches, adding a
few years to the case. This ought to very interesting
on Monday" Lou said.
After dinner Lou left with his notes. Mother, Gerry
and Ellie watched TV the rest of the evening. Not
much on being Saturday night but the did enjoy a
1930s crime film.
Gerry went home, Mother went to bed. Ellie sat and
channeled surfed many times. Her thoughts wandered of
to what Lou had said about the abused girl might have
been Noelle.
I hope not, she said to herself.
Sunday came and went. Ellie slept in. Mother cleaned
the house a bit. When Ellie got up, she ate a brunch
meal while reading the paper. She read the stories
related to the shootings. The accounts weren't
accurate. Sunday was slow. Ellie want to get out but
Mother wouldn't allow it. Then the phone rang.
Ellie answered. "Hello."
It was LaToya. "Hey girl, whats up?"
"The shootings." Ellie then recount the police
interviews, what happened with Laticia and Noelle.
Laticia's extortion accusation.
"Girl, I told you not to that stupid thing. But you
got stupid on me. Now there is heck to pay" LaToya
said.
"Yeah, you maybe right. But Laticia's accusation
looks like her word against mine" Ellie said.
"What the cheer squad? You still on?"
"Not at the moment. Ms. Nichols suspended me, Laticia
and Noelle till it gets sorted out. I maybe off for
good. I don't know."
LaToya said "Well I wanted to check on you girl.
Don't get stupid on me again. K?"
"K. See you in school. Bye."
"Bye."
Ellie then hung up the phone. She watched TV the rest
of the day.
Monday in school was wild. Rumors were flying about
the place. It was as bad as who had shot JR on the
old Dallas TV show many years ago. Ellie made way to
home room. She sat by herself with her Literature
book trying to read. Half way through Home Room, the
Public Address system called Ellie to the Front
Office. Now what Ellie thought. She wished all was
over.
Ellie went to the Front Office and told the secretary
she had been called here. The secretary told her to
sit down and wait. Ellie saw Ms. Able in one office
and Ms. Nichols in another. Neither looked happy but
neither did Ellie. A man called Ellie's name and
asked her back to his office. She recognized him as
Mr. Stern, the Principle of the school.
She went in and sat down. Mr. Stern didn't look happy
either. "Ellie, tell me what happened Friday?" he
asked.
"What part of Friday Sir?" she asked him.
"From the start please? As you know there is big mess
here, your part of it. I need to establish what
happened."
Ellie told him what had happened. She left out a few
things like her sticking the picture in Laticia's
locker. It took her 20 minutes.
"I see" he said. "You can return to your class now,
the secretary will give you a pass."
Ellie went to her first period class. It was half way
done when she got there. She didn't learn anything
there. Second and third periods came and went. LaToya
and Ellie sat next to each other. LaToya had to keep
Ellie focused.
Fourth period had just started when Ellie was again
called the Front Office. "LEAVE ME ALONE" she shouted
at everybody and nobody. She went to the Front
Office. She saw Lou and her mother there. Ellie went
in. The secretary sent them into Mr. Stern's office.
Ellie looked her mother and Lou. Mr. Stern was on the
phone with has back to them. He finally hung up the
phone and said "Thank you for coming. This problem is
a mess, and I am really not sure home to proceed. He
looked at Lou "Are you Ellie's father sir?"
Lou said "No, I'm her lawyer."
"OH GOD" was all that Mr. Stern said. "Sorry for that
comment. Are you here about the slapping?"
"What slapping?" Mother asked.
Mr. Stern went to explain about how Ms. Able slapped
Ellie on Friday. He added "As of this morning, she is
on suspension. She will most likely loose her job for
that incident."
Mother looked at Ellie "Why didn't you tell me about
this?"
Ellie said "It was nothing much. Ms. Able was upset
at me. It really didn't bother me."
Lou said "It bothers me. Bothers me a great deal." He
smelled lawsuit out of the slapping.
"The other incident is with the cheer squad. Ms.
Nichols told me what happened from what she had seen.
I have talked to all the other squad members too.
They corroborate Laticia's attacks on you Friday. As
for your accusation violation of the Moral Code, I
have no way to prove or disprove that except for what
you said about both Laticia and Noelle, and Noelle's
saying it happened. Right now, pending the criminal
investigation of the shootings, I think it would be
better if you were not cheering Ellie. It is for the
better of the School."
Ellie started to cry. Mother said "That isn't fair
Mr. Stern. My daughter was assaulted by another
individual and your holding her responsible? THAT
ISN'T FAIR!"
Mr. Stern said "I checked with the District
Superintendent, he agrees with me."
Lou spoke up "I don't. Now you can keep this farce of
'being better for the school' or you are going to
have one hell of a legal mess to deal with. Not to
mention the field day the press will have."
Mr. Stern asked "Legal mess?"
"Yes." Lou responded.
"How? There is a school policy about this."
"About what, being better for the school? Thats crap
and you know it. The legal action that I will file
before this day is out starts with child abuse by a
teacher on school property for starters. Next comes
with my client being assaulted by another student on
school property while a teacher is present and no
action was taken, nothing. As I see it, there are two
teachers, their supervisor, you Mr. Stern, the School
System and the Superintendent getting multiple law
suits filed TODAY before the close of business. Now
do you understand me Mr. Stern?" Lou had said
straight faced.
Ellie had stopped crying. Her mother sat and watched
Lou attack Mr. Stern.
Mr. Stern said "That would present some very nasty
problems. Let me call the Superintendent to see what
can be done."
"No" said Lou quietly. "I'll call him and we both
will talk to him. If he doesn't want to talk to me
today, then I sue. Plain and simple."
Mr. Stern called the Superintendent. Both Lou and Mr.
Stern talked to him. Lou asked both Ellie and her
mother to wait in the lobby. They talked for 45
minutes. A few times, it got loud which resulted in
the entire office looking at Mr. Stern's office.
Ellie sat in silence as did her mother, they both
exchanged looks frequently. Finally Mr. Stern waved
them both back.
"You know Lou, you would have made a great teacher.
You could teach anybody almost anything" Mr. Stern
said. "Ellie, after some very serious negotiations,
you are hereby restored to the cheer squad given that
YOU were attacked. The problem with the criminal
investigation, there is nothing the school system can
do with that. For what Ms. Able did you, she has been
terminated effective today. Given the stress you have
been through these last several days, you can stay at
home excused for the rest of the week. I have called
your teachers and will get your assignments to you.
Is that satisfactory?"
Both Ellie and her mother looked at Lou. He nodded
yes.
"Yes sir. Can I go to my locker first?" Ellie asked.
"Sure, the secretary will get you a hall pass."
"Thanks."
Ellie left for her locker. Her mother watched her
leave. Finally she said "Thank you both. I noticed it
got a bit loud in here. Anything that I should know
about?"
Both Lou and Mr. Stern looked at her and said "No" at
the same time. Then they laughed. Lou spoke then "It
took some convincing of the Superintendent to correct
to problem. It seems that a member of the School
Board is a client of mine. I simply brought up the
subject how this whole issue would play at the next
Board meeting, plus the law suits that would have
been filed, plus the press accounts. I just found
that it is easier to walk and carry a big hammer in
negotiations."
"That is a big stick Lou. Teddy Roosevelt said that.
'Walk softly and carry a big stick.'" added Mr.
Stern.
"I hope this all done," said Mother "I know Ellie
will be happy."
"So will I, so will I" added Mr. Stern.
Lou and Ellie's mother left the office and waited in
the lobby for Ellie. She had her school books and
cheer uniform. She was quiet.
Lou left to return to his office. Mother and Ellie
went home. Both were quiet.
"Ellie, you know what tomorrow is don't you?"
Ellie responded morosely "Tuesday".
"Yes, you have to be at the DMV early with me for
your tests" Mother said.
"DMV?" Ellie responded. That brought a cheer to her.
She smiled. "I can drive after tomorrow."
"Not quite, we still have to go before a judge.
Remember the gender problem?"
"Oh yeah. You know, I keep forgetting about that. I
mean now being 17, it really doesn't bother me. I
have been a girl since 11, I like being a girl."
"Ellie, whether your a boy or a girl, your my baby
and always will be" Mother said.
On Tuesday, at the DMV, Ellie passed both the written
and driving portion of the test scoring 99%. The
question of gender came up when a clerk looked at the
birth certificate, at Ellie, then the certificate,
and back to Ellie then put down female on the
license. Ellie just smiled and thanked the clerk.
Ellie was in 7th heaven. Mother was happy. They had
lunch, and went to the mall. Passing an electronic
store, the watched the TV that had the news on about
the shootings. The story said the shooter was sent to
a psychiatric hospital for a break down. Ellie felt
sorry for Noelle. They then continued shopping.
At home, the phone rang. It was Lou. He said he
checked the records about the case he had mentioned
on Saturday night about the juvenile female and found
her name, Noelle.
After he hung up, the phone rang again. It was
LaToya.
"Hey 'Toya?"
"Hey girl. So what happened with Mr. Stern. How come
you aren't in school? Did you get back on the squad?
You know what happened to Ms. Able, MIS A BELL?" she
said.
"Calm down 'Toya. Yes I know all about what
happened." Ellie explained what had transpired with
Mr. Stern and Lou.
"You go girl! Guess you will be at the game Friday?"
"No I won't. I am excused till next Monday when I
come back to school" Ellie said.
"Won't you miss cheering girl?"
"I will 'Toya. But I need the rest."
"K. I'll call you on Thursday, maybe we can go to the
movies on Friday then" LaToya said.
"K. That'd be cool."
LaToya said bye, and hung up. Ellie hung up her
phone. Maybe she could drive there.
After the Holiday season. Ellie cheered during
basketball season. She remained the squad captain.
Ellie went before a judge to get her drivers license.
The judge, looked at the birth certificate and the
forms from the DMV asked Ellie's mother the gender
question, was Ellie a boy or girl. Mother simply told
the judge "Yes to both." He was not amused but Mother
provided the proper medical records. The judge asked
Ellie how she felt about her situation. Her response
was very simple "What bearing does my feeling have on
a drivers license? I was born this way, I am who I
am. I am Ellie." The judge didn't argue with her, she
was a she now.
After going to court for her drivers license. Her
court case against Laticia came up. Laticia pleaded
guilty and apologized to Ellie. Her sentence was to
time served and a $300 fine. Laticia never appeared
again in school. She just seemed to disappear.
The last anybody heard of Noelle, she was still
institutionalized. Her mental problems remained.
Ellie broke up with Gerry though they remain friends.
He found another girl who liked him, LaToya. She
remained Ellie's friend too.
