I had spent the day playing in one of those seedy casinos on the wrong side

way to pay me off, either by borrowing or by dint of your personal finances.
Finally, the state of packing that my associates found you in leads me to
believe that you had planned to leave without making suitable recompense.

How do you answer something like that? I kept silent.
He continued. "I often run into this sort of situation, and I've come up
with rather a novel way to dealing with it. You will become my employee
until such time as you have worked off your debt. Take this." He handed me a
gold ring. He said, "Wear that and my associate Vincent will lead you to
your instructor."
He turned back to his paperwork, and one of the human pillars beside me took
me by the arm. He led me down the hall to a waiting limousine and pointed
wordlessly to the back door. I shrugged and got in. Vincent himself got into
the driver's seat.
He spoke once, saying, "Put on that ring right now."
I did so and he pulled out into the street. I inspected the ring. It was a
simple gold band with a gothic-style inscription on the outside. I finally
puzzled it out. It said WERDEN in big letters. I had no idea what the word
meant, so I turned my attention to the surrounding streets. We were pulling
into a dramatically better part of town, and soon Vincent pulled into the
driveway of a large mansion.
He escorted me out and to the front door, where he leaned on the doorbell
until the door was opened by a short, pudgy man. The newcomer said, "It's
about time."
Vincent said, "I apologize, sir. The traffic is terrible right now."
The man shrugged and said, "Yes. I'll send for you when I'm done." He
pointed to me. "You, follow me."
I followed him into a house such as I had never seen before. It was gorgeous
and, I quickly learned, enormous. He finally opened a door and led me into a
huge bedroom. I stiffened and said, "I don't know what they told you I was
here for, but-"
"Shut up. Take this, and look at the picture."
He handed me a page that had apparently been torn out of a magazine. It had

one-piece bathing suit. I didn't have a whole lot of trouble staring long
and hard at it.
The man said, "Verden," and suddenly the room swirled around me. I felt like
I'd drunk a lot for a long time in just a second. Then the room stabilized,
but I was still a little loopy. He gently put an arm around my shoulders and
led me to a wall that was actually a mirror.
The reflection showed that he had his arm around Carmen Electra's shoulders.
She was wearing the same suit as she had been in the picture. The problem
was, she was mirroring every one of my movements. She reached up to her

away from me and I continued my stunned explorations. Finally I turned to

"Don't worry," he said, and somehow my worries did start to ease. Then he

Vincent kept laughing. "It's on there until the boss says that it's not."
I stopped and said, "What does Werden mean?"
He said, "It's pronounced 'verden.' It means, 'to become.' Here."
He passed back a magazine. I had just enough time to register that it was a
copy of Rolling Stone and that Britney Spears was on the cover half-naked.
"Verden," he said.
