What the hell should I do now Tony thought? He had been awake in his

"Wait!" Tony cried into the phone, "Kim?"

Kim arrived in a beat up old Jeep and honked in the driveway. Tony had
shoved some money in his pocket and grabbed a sweatshirt and headed out
the door.
"Hey girl." Kim said as she slid into the front seat.
"Hi." Tony murmured.
"Where's your dad?"
"Oh he's not feeling well so he's resting." Tony lied.
"So I talked to Pammy this morning and she's all like 'there's no way
Kevin is interested in Taneka..." and she proceeded to chatter all the
way to the high school.
Tony tried hard to follow the conversation and to keep track of the
names figuring they would play an important part in the rest of the day
but he failed miserably. They parked in the student lot and walked over
to the stands at the football field. Lots of other people, especially
students were headed in the same direction. Kim kept chatting and then
began saying hi to other girls. Tony knew a few of his daughter's
friend's names but not many. He waved and said hi to as many as he
could.
He and Kim took seats on the bleachers surrounded by about 250 or more
other students. The game would start in a few minutes and the captains
were on the field for the coin toss. Tony noticed a girl two rows in
front who had thrown her sweatshirt over her shoulders and he did the
same. The Bedford Field Hockey logo was clearly evident on her back.
Tony noticed a pretty black cheerleader who appeared to be waiving at
him. Kim began to wave back so he did too.
"Hey Taneka." Kim shouted. "Look at Pammy standing next to her, trying
to suck up, she'd push Taneka down the stairs to get at Kevin."
There were two white girls next to Taneka, one on either side. Which
was Pammy remained a mystery to him. During the course of the game
several other girls showed up and through the course of conversation
Tony learned who Lori, Kendra and Tea were.
At one point a man, who must have been a teacher, walked up the
bleachers with a little boy in front of him and said, "Nice goal in the
game Thursday, Tiffany."
"Thank you." Tony said as politely as he could.
Kim turned and giggled in a whisper. "I can't believe Mr. Timmons
always says something to you. Kendra had two goals and he never says
anything to her."
"Tiff's just a teacher's pet," Kendra teased poking Tony in the side.
"Yeah, we'll see after I ace the English test Monday." Tea said and all
the girls laughed.
At half time they all went in a pack, about 8 girls, to go get soda.
Tony actually bought a Powerade and after he had made his selection
several others did as well. He noticed that each of the others also had
a similar sweatshirt and it dawned on him that his had a number on the
sleeve, #8. All of the others were numbered too. He was with the field
hockey team, duh!
"Look at Tiff drinking the good stuff." one girl said.
"What are you running for captain already, girl?" another teased.
"She keeps playing the way she has she'll be the first junior captain
ever." said another.
"Fer sure." Kim agreed.
Tony was swelling with pride. His daughter was a good athlete, a leader
on the team and apparently doing well in one of the classes. They
returned to the stands for the second half and now the girls were
actually paying attention to the game and chatting less. They were
commenting on this player and that. The game was close but Bedford was
holding a 6 point lead. With only a few minutes to go the girls all got
up and moved down to the edge of the field. The other team had the ball
and was moving into Bedford's end. The running back was making a great
run up the sideline in front of the girls when the Bedford middle
linebacker made a touchdown saving tackle right in front of the girls.

"Way to go Kevin," they were yelling.
The line backer stood up. He was a big black guy. One girl reached out

The game ended and Bedford had held on to win. The players began to
drift off the field, talking to each other, greeting parents and

David Smith the senior receiver said there was a victory party at his

Tony thought about it and wondered if this was a good move.

"We'll shop first, then go home and get ready, then go over to the

Kim had set the plan and Tony felt his daughter would go judging form
all the "see you theres" he was receiving from the others.
As they started toward Kim's car the pack began to dissolve a bit. Tony
heard a whisper in his ear.
"Don't look now but there's Bobby Kelton and he's moving in for the
kill."
And there were snickers all around. Coming over to the group was a

hope Tiffany would like.

"Are you going to David's party tonight?"

There was silence, the group stopped moving and all eyes were on Tony.

"He is so lame crutches wouldn't help him and he's only a sophomore."

Tony thought about that for a minute. His daughter is talking about
dating juniors. Maybe he ought to talk to her.
"Whatever..." Tony said and started walking.
The group buzzed with chatter about Tiffany and Bobby as a couple.
There was laughter and teasing until she was in the car.
"You okay? You have been acting weird today. Not talking much,
forgetting people's names, talking about Bobby being nice."

should we wear tonight?"
