Alex Marx looked across the cafeteria at Tiffany Noscenminx,

to look out for. Someone had died every year for the past two
years. First it had been Ashley Chrighton and then it had been
John McCarver and Kristie Holleron, who was only a junior at
the time but it still counted.
The lunch bell rang and Alex and Seth threw away their trays.
They were in their blocker periods but they preferred the cheap
high school food to fast food. Alex and Seth walked out to
their respective cars and left. Alex had to get home and do
some things for his mother and get things in order for college.
Seth decided to go for a drive through the residential areas,
maybe stop by Carrie Ann McGraw's house. She was always nice to
the underclassman and Seth had happened to become one of her
friends. Then again, he could just cruise for a bit and then go
home. He decided to decide when he got there.

"Sorry Seth, John's over for the night. And I've told you, I
don't think you and I should talk any more," Carrie Ann said
from the crack of her door.
"What's up Carrie? Ever since that last blackout you've shoved
pretty much everyone away except John McCarver. Come to think
of it, the old varsity cheerleading squad won't come out in
public either. What happened?" Seth asked concernedly.
"I'm surprised they'd remember. Poor people. Seth, don't make
me think about it. I don't want something from the past popping
up. Just know we're scared Seth. We're really scared something

any of us. This isn't a grave worth digging up." With that,
Carrie Ann shut the door. He heard the clicks of locks. What
was going on around here?
"Simple, long forgotten secrets sometimes backfire on the

don't. The lucky who do cower in fear like fools. Oh well. The
past is gone for now, but everything has a rebirth," said an
old woman's voice from behind Seth. Seth turned to see that it
was indeed an old woman, pushing a shopping cart. She smiled

"What're you talking about?"
"Nothing. I'm just a silly old woman looking for some money to
eat for the night. I have some goods for sale if you'd be so
kind. The last person I sold to got a bit hungry though. I may

I go a bit eccentric from time to time."
"What do you have for sale?"
"Hmmm. Let's see what you would want. You're after the heart of

I can help you."
"How'd you know?"
"Just a feeling I have. Here, drink this concoction and whoever
you desire will become whatever you desire of him or her. This
girl could be yours." The old woman held up a vial of red,

off. As he turned, he began to slip the vial into his pocket,
but something stopped him. Soda or not, poison or no poison, a
chance to be with Tiffany was worth the risk. He gulped the
vial down. It tasted like cherry soda as it passed through his
mouth. Seth shrugged, got in his car, and drove home.

About the middle of the night, Seth was awoken by a loud
squeak. He was half awake so he pays no attention. What did
catch his attention was the hand that pushed down on him and
shook him violently. Seth bolted up and flipped his lamp on as
he spun out of his bed. The person in his room was Alex, who
was shivering and seemed to be straining. He stared red faced
at Seth, gasping for air.
"Alex, what's wrong dude?" Seth asked. Alex shook his head and
looked at Seth pleadingly.
"Something's in me, and it's trying to get out. I've started
changing into something or someone. Look," Alex said as he
turned around. He lifted his pajama shirt and pointed at his

As Seth drudged into his room, the first person to greet him

"That won't be necessary. I'll get it moved over here for you
while you're out getting the pot. You'd like that, right?"
Tiffany smiled with glee.
"Yes! Of course. Thanks. Okay. I'll be back in a little bit.
Don't get too lonely without me." Tiffany blew him a kiss as
she dashed out of the room. Seth flopped down on his bed. She
didn't know that the real Tiffany had died. The "curse" had hit
her this year. It was a car accident once again. That had to be
the reason why Alex had been hit with the spell instead of the
real Tiffany. The spell had given him whoever he wanted. And he
could will her to be anything he wanted her to be or whatever
he wanted. He seemed to have the power to make her stuff even.
While she was away, he'd move his stuff into the apartment he'd
rented out a few weeks earlier, the one him and Alex had been
planning on moving into after high school while Alex took care
of college at the local community college. Then he'd just make
Tiffany's stuff appear in the apartment, wait for her here and

herself in order to avoid any awkward questions of why a dead
girl was living with him. Seth sighed and silently apologized
to Alex. He said his goodbyes to the old days with his friend
and walked out the door to get to work.

subconscious of practically everyone in Seth's town worked its

spirit was in Seth's subconscious. Realizing Seth's ability to

"What are you talking?" John's question answered itself as he
felt Carrie Ann's hair soften in his hands and he could see the
slight glimmer of blonde through the dark room. He felt her
figure shifting, and though he couldn't see it, he knew who was
