A SEASON OF DARKNESS PART ONE: ARRIVALS 1. One of the oddest things about change is that you rarely see it coming. It sort of sidles up to you all silent and unannounced, like the rising of the sun or the turning of the seasons. For me, it happened on a bright, cool morning at the beginning of summer; not long after my ninth birthday; around the same time my Dad went off to Chicago with his girlfriend. Mom and I never saw that one coming either. Looking back, I suppose I shouldn't have been so surprised at what went down over the next few months; a lot of weird stuff was going on that year. I was sitting on the front steps of our Fairmont home, listening to the radio and absently playing with a Whipper-Snapper. A Whipper-Snapper is one of those toys that fall in and out of fashion; a small blue ping-pong racket with a black rubber ball attached to it. They have about a dozen different names; Hip-Zipper or Bee-Bopper or something equally inane, but you know what I mean. You probably had one yourself when you were a kid. It must've been about ten in the morning when the Tracker Brothers moving van pulled up in front of the house next door. I watched their arrival with considerable interest; the Old Stewart Place had been vacant for about two years and had half a dozen realty signs decorating the front yard. My mother secretly hoped it never sold, because you could never tell what kind of neighbors you were going to get. Guess we were about to find out. Anyway, a couple of fat, sweaty guys got out of the truck (the Tracker Bothers presumably) and started unloading furniture onto the front lawn, grunting and wheezing with exertion. Leaving the radio on the veranda, I stood up and walked over to the edge of the yard. Even at my age, I knew you could tell a lot about people from their possessions. There was a fence dividing our properties, a low, red-brick wall maybe a foot high. I stood to one side, casually zocking the Whipper-Snapper up and down. If the Trackers noticed my presence, they didn't give any indication. Surveying the chaos, I figured that the new neighbors had at least one kid ? most probably a girl by the looks of things. Most boys would have been disappointed to see all the dolls and pandas and bunny-ruggles, but I was the only kid living up on Fairmont Heights at the time. Most of my friends lived out in Greendale, way over on the other side of town. Any change would have been an improvement as far as I was concerned. Glancing back towards my house, I sat down on the fence, settling in for the morning. Mom wouldn't like me annoying the removalists, so I decided to keep a low profile. The neighbors themselves appeared five minutes later, rolling up the driveway in a late model ford (a Thunderbird, if I remember correctly). The doors cracked open and two people got out: a tall, dark haired woman and a little blond girl I judged to be about the same age as me. I was too far away to get a close look, although I thought the mother was probably quite good-looking. As for the daughter, she scooted into the house carrying an armload of stuffed animals faster than it takes to read this sentence. The woman walked over to talk to the moving-guys, both of whom were struggling with an antique European chaise-long, the sort you see in old Frankenstein movies. A lot of her furniture was like that; all vintage lamps and statuettes and vases from mysterious lands. I later found out that that was her job; she used to be an agent for some auction house in upstate New York. The morning proceeded for about an hour until the Trackers took a coffee break (the older sibling kept a thermos in the van), by which time most of the furniture had been relocated inside. The lawn was still littered with tea-chests and hampers, but most of the work had been done. The little girl had spent most of her time darting in and out of the house collecting toys, books and assorted knick-knacks; now she was ready to explore her immediate surroundings. Or more precisely, she was ready to investigate me. Gingerly mounting the brick fence, she held her arms out for balance and started walking along the top, pretending she hadn't noticed me. I did much the same thing, hammering idly away at my paddle-ball until she was about ten feet away. We both looked up at the same instant, cued by that obscure sense of timing all children seem to possess. She paused for a moment, then tight-roped forward a few more steps. "Hi. I'm Chissie," she informed me, cutting through all the social protocols without a backward glance. "Hi, I'm Billy. You're new here." I'd been on an unending quest to state the obvious for some years now. "Yeah," she confirmed offhand, "we just moved in this morning." "Where you from?" "Longridge Bay." "Where's that?" She shrugged her answer; very few nine year-olds can point out their hometown on a map. That was no big deal, though; I sometimes had trouble finding my way home from school, so she was probably doing better than me. "You live there?" she asked, pointing to our modest little colonial bluestone. "Yeah," I nodded, "I live here with my Mom." "I live with my Mom too," she commented, still working on her balance (although the fence was only a foot off the ground), "but not my Dad. He went away a long time ago." "Where to?" I enquired, surprised that we were both single-parent kids. "France, I think." "Mine's in Chicago." We spoke with the unselfconscious curiosity of very young children, communicating with the simplicity of total innocence. I think that's where it all began, in those quiet moments between each sentence. We talked and we listened, and somehow, in the brief pauses punctuating our words, our lives had become inextricably linked. Of course, neither of us could have realized that at the time. At the end of the day, we were just two kids chattering away in the warm June sunshine. About the only thing I really noticed was how pretty Chrissie was ? much prettier than any of the girls I knew from school. She had the delicate bone structure and milky complexion of a new born infant. I think her most captivating feature was her eyes. They were a pale shade of violet I'd never seen before ? violet ringed with turquoise, if you can believe that. Whenever they caught the sun, they seemed to glitter with some strange purple light, though that was probably my imagination. "Do you have any brothers or sisters?" she enquired, pirouetting around on her right foot. Her little pink sun-frock ballooned out around her thighs as she turned. "No, I don't," I answered, thinking she probably studied ballet or something. She reminded me of a music-box dancer. "Me neither," she said, patting her skirt down, then added: "my Daddy left when I was really little," by way of explanation. I thought of mentioning that my father only ran off two months before, but decided I didn't want to talk about it. Instead, I returned my attention to the paddle-ball, whocking it towards the grass in short, elastic loops. "What's that?" Chrissie demanded, spinning anti-clockwise this time. "It's a Whipper-Snapper. I got it for my birthday." I gave the ball an extra hard zock, stretching the string out to around three feet. Chrissie's eyes widened as if she'd never seen one before. The ball streaked out half a dozen times before I dropped the pace back to more normal parameters. "Can I have a try?" Chrissie asked. "Yeah, sure," I shrugged. Chrissie jumped off the wall and her dress ballooned up again, this time around her waist. I stood up and handed her the paddle, talking her through the intricacies of holding the grip. Chrissie nodded along for a few seconds, then started zocking away like a world class champion. My mouth flopped open in astonishment: it had taken me nearly two months to perfect my technique, practicing every day since my father flew the coop. "You've done this before," I gaped in near disbelief. "No, this is my first time," she corrected, literally beaming with pleasure. She turned her shimmering, purple eyes in my direction, and somehow, I knew she was telling me the truth. 2. In the weeks that followed, I would discover that Chrissie was something of a prodigy. She could pick up new skills in the blink of an eye and usually without any practice whatsoever. Mastering the paddle-ball in a matter of seconds was probably the least of her abilities, though it sure impressed the hell out of me. At times, I found it downright spooky, but on that lazy summer morning at the beginning of June, it was the proverbial mystery of the ages. I never had the opportunity to ask her about it, however. Just at that second, Chrissie's mother appeared on the front veranda and called out to her. Both of us turned towards the voice, Chrissie a fraction of a second earlier than me (and without losing her rhythm for so much as a second). The woman standing at the top of the steps was tall and willow-thin with jet black hair slicing down the left side of her face. She was wearing a plain blue house dress that somehow rippled against her figure like liquid silk. She looked to be in her late twenties, though at that distance I couldn't be sure. "That your Mom?" I asked, squinting for focus. "Yeah," Chrissie confirmed, taking me by the hand and tugging me towards the house, "come over and say hi." We set off across the lawn, dodging between miscellaneous crates and packing cartons. I was suddenly a little shy of meeting her, knowing she was probably incredibly busy with everything. If I'd been a few years older, I would have made some excuse and come back in a day or two, but I was still too young for such complex social rituals. Needless to say, I had nothing to worry about. Chrissie dragged me to the foot of the steps, and her mother came down to meet us. And my jaw dropped for the second time that day. Chrissie's mom was the most beautiful woman I've ever seen in my life. There's simply no other way to describe her. It wasn't conventional beauty, like you see in fashion magazines or TV shows. No, it was much more subtle than that, sort of like the tones of a Renaissance painting or the scales of a classical aria. I stared at her with a child's unaffected wonder, and she rewarded me with a smile that could have shamed the sun. "Who's this?" she asked, touching my face with her luminous gaze. I felt my heart stall in mid-beat. "Momma, this is Billy," Chrissie said, indicating me with a sweep of her hand, "he's my new friend." "Well, pleased to meet you, Billy. My name's Evelyn Rinehart. My friends call me Eve." "Hi, Mrs. Rinehart," I managed after an incredibly long pause, "I'm Billy Campbell. I live next door." More of my unending crusade to pinpoint the obvious. It never occurred to me to call Eve by her first name (even if it had, my mother wouldn't have stood for it). The social niceties being concluded, Chrissie grabbed my hand and pulled me a few steps closer. "Mom, can Billy help us move our stuff inside?" she asked, fidgeting with excitement. Eva regarded her daughter with a just a hint of amusement. "Certainly," she nodded indulgently, "if he wants too, that is." "You wanna?" Chrissie chimed. "Well, sure," I agreed without paying that much attention to the question. I was peering up at Eva in a daze, taking in the perfect contours of her face, the thick, black curtain of her hair. There was no denying the facial resemblance; mother and daughter shared the same perfect features, right down to the clipped button nose and the dimples on either side of the mouth. The same haunting, violet eyes too. "Come on, then!" Chrissie exclaimed, yanking me up the steps and breaking the spell. "I'll show you where my room is!" We spent the remainder of the morning scampering around the house and yard without actually doing anything (the Trackers did most of the heavy lifting, cursing like marines because everything deemed to weigh a thousand pounds). We were too excited be of any use. Exploring the Old Stewart Place was like discovering some exotic, fairy-tale world. Every doorway led to a dozen more; there had to be at least a hundred rooms under its gabled roof. Or so it seems when you're nine years old. The removalists finished about one in the afternoon. Eve paid them both an extra twenty for their services, then set about putting the kitchen in order. Chrissie and I stood on the front lawn, watching the Tracker's van rumbling off down the road and wondering what to do next. We couldn't play inside; the house was a chaotic sprawl of unopened boxes, even Chrissie's attic bedroom. "You wanna play hide and seek out back?" she suggested, kneading her skirt between her fingers like a four year old, almost dancing with anticipation. I have to admit I was sorely tempted. Like any boy of my generation, I would have stayed out playing until the sun went down or the world came to an end, whichever came first. Trouble was, I knew I had to get going. My mother had been kinda moody since Dad left, and I wasn't sure how she'd react to me spending so much time with a couple of total strangers, even if they were our new neighbors. "No, I better go home now" I explained, hoping I wouldn't hurt her feelings, "my Mom'll be calling me inside for lunch soon." "OK," she said, hardly disappointed at all, "you want to play again tomorrow?" "Well, sure. There's a playground over on Wentworth Drive, I'll take you there if you want." "Good! That'll be fun," she answered, hitting me with that 250 volt smile she'd inherited from her mother. For a split second, I saw a ghost of the woman she'd eventually become, and my heart did another somersault. Then it was gone and she was just Little Chrissie Rinehart, the girl next door. "All right then. I'll see you tomorrow morning." I raised a hand to signal goodbye and started walking towards the brick fence, smiling at the thought of taking Chrissie to the park tomorrow. We'd had such a wonderful day together, I was honestly looking forward to seeing her again. I'd gotten less than ten steps before she called out to me. "Billy?" "Yeah?" "Want me to get your Whipper-Snapper?" I paused, looking back over my shoulder at her. We'd left it upstairs in her bedroom when we came down to wave goodbye to the Trackers. "It's yours," I said after a micro-second's consideration. "Really?" Chrissie asked, her expression almost comically surprised. "Yeah. It's yours. Keep it." Why the hell not? It was a lame excuse for a birthday present in the first place - even if it was the last thing my Dad ever gave me. Chrissie, on the other hand, was utterly delighted. She ran over in a haze of flying skirts, pigtails whipping about in the slipstream. I braced for impact, thinking she was going to kiss me. "Thanks, Billy," she trilled, hugging herself in undisguised pleasure, "you're really nice." That flickering purple light was back in her eyes again. "You're welcome," I smiled, more than a trifle embarrassed by her boundless enthusiasm. Part of me was hoping she really would kiss me - although I would have blushed the color of a ripe strawberry if she had. "See you tomorrow then?" she demanded, still hugging herself around the middle. "You bet." Nothing short of a mass extinction would have kept me away. We said goodbye once more and I stepped over to my side of the fence, glancing back over my shoulder as I walked up to our front door. Chrissie was spinning across the lawn like a pink tornado, hands lifted to the skies. I halted on the porch to watch the show, half-expecting her to lift off the ground and go soaring off over the trees. It was impossible not to like her, she was sweet and funny and? well, magical in ways that I couldn't define. Giggling at the top of her lungs, she trailed out of her spin and fell over on her back in a flail of knees and elbows. She lay there staring up at the sky, panting for breath and happy as a cloud; I stood watching her for a few more seconds, feeling a warm glow spreading though my midsection. I had no idea what I'd set in motion that day, no idea what was approaching or how my life was about to change, but none of that counted at the time. All I knew was that I'd made a new friend; and in the end, that's all that ever matters. NEXT: Summer Lightning

Tenchi Muyo All Good ThingsChapter 18 Ahh Kiyone

"Ok," Kiyone was saying evenly, halting as she was passing through and under the Torii. "Now repeat it back to me." "No touching, no button pressing, no lever throwing." Mihoshi sighed, taking the final step up. "No cable disconnecting, no tying or untying for that matter." She continued after pausing beneath the Torii's arch, reciting in a sing song voice complete with rocking her head back and forth in time with the meter of her words. "And if I see anything in my way higher than...

The Judgment of Sgt J Chapter 11 The Darkness of Truth

I watched Sherri run crying down the hallway. I knew she was running to seek comfort from her mom and Cathy. Those three drew strength from each other when they are united. However, for the past few years they have been against each other. Each of them had found a spot in my heart however; my heart was heavy with doubt about each of them. I did not know why they had turned suddenly against each other especially Kay and Cathy. All I did know was I was not going to stand for it. My family...

GoddessChapter 2 Persephone

WHEN PERSEPHONE RELEASED ME SHE turned her face up for a kiss, her lips soft, warm and inviting. She didn't move away, and after our second kiss I was breathing hard and I'm sure she could feel my heart pumping, even through her leathers. She certainly could after she put her hand on my shirt. "Hey, sweetie, what's up?" I opened my mouth to reply, but no words came out. I must have looked like a stranded fish. She laughed. "Cat got your tongue tonight, Sam?" My lips moved once...

GoddessChapter 12 The Rape of Persephone

THE TRILL CAME TOO LATE for me to save Persephone. Early that morning I'd opened my eyes to see Hebe, her face inches away, her smile an open invitation. In answer I rolled onto her and settled myself in the cradle of her hips and entered her with a single stroke. She grunted and locked her legs around my butt. "Don't wait for me, Sam," she whispered. "I'm right on the edge." She was. After I finished I slid down and used my tongue to give her a little vibrato of my own. She shoved...

Fallen Angel Chapter 14 The Road through Darkness

Chapter 14: The Road through Darkness Lightning flashed, illuminating the darkened room. Opening one bleary eye, Cal looked over and saw Tawny looking at him lovingly, her arm around his stomach. Althea was still asleep. "How'd you sleep, love?" Cal whispered as he slowly sat up and wiped the sweat off his brow. Tawny moaned and sat up, kissing Cal on the lips. "It was great!" she whispered eagerly, shivering from the chill bedroom air. Seeing the shudder, Cal pulled his blanket up...

They’d been friends for 20 years now and although life had pushed them into different directions, they remained the best of friends. It was November and they were discussing their plans for Christmas. They’d both turned 30 in the course of the year and were...

Darkness and LightChapter 31 Light Shines Through

Athea sat on her horse surrounded by the matriarchs of the Ghallan Clans. She was the center of the group but no one talked to her. They talked amongst each other, mostly whispering. Often one of them would look at her, shortly, and abruptly look away again, before it could have been considered staring, and maybe noticed. To be noticed by Athea seemed unlikely, though. Her gaze, trying to pervade the darkness, was directed far away to the west. Menja and Denyssa, sitting side by side on the...

Darkness and LightChapter 30 Sacrifices

Roban watched Rhabina. Her halo bright and annoying, but on the other hand it illuminated her figure in the dimly lit chamber. Roban liked her figure, he liked it a lot. Rhabina noticed her figure as well, maybe her reflection was visible in Roban’s lecherous grin. She shrieked and sat up, one arm covering her breasts and one hand flew between her thighs to hide her sex. Roban snorted. “I’ve seen you before,” he pointed out. “Where am I?” She asked ignoring his remark. “This is the...

Darkness Within Chapter 1 Beginnings

Nature or nurture, what makes a man like me? Sadistic, cruel, perverted, depraved, I am an insatiable sexual predator who lives for the screams of helpless beautiful women who will know nothing but pain, terror and sexual degradation for the remainder of their short lives. All that I know is that the darkness has been part of me for as long as I can remember. But it wasn’t until my senior year in high school that I got my first real glimpse of who and what I am, and almost fucked up my life...

Darkness and LightChapter 28 Once Upon a Time

I am Creation, I am the beginning. I made the sun and the moon, Calmyra, the Underworld and Atyseos. I made every mountain and every grain of sand, all the animals and mankind. When all was done, I made myself, Ghania, and then I watched what I had made. I watched it grow and rise, and saw mankind make its own creations. A language, science, arts, and then they looked at the heaven and created the gods. The first man hunting down a deer thanked Nyome. The first two people falling in love...

Seasonal DaughtersChapter 5

I drove home and went to bed. Sleeping wasn't immediate as I thought about Laura and Jenny. I did sleep, eventually. In the morning, the girls came bouncing in with coffee and questions. April's first question was, "Did you kiss her?" "Kiss who?" "Dad, that's not funny." "We kissed very lightly. I have had more passionate kisses from you two. It was appropriate under the circumstances." May said, "I like her. I think you should bring her around more often." "May, we've...

A Season of Darkness Chapter 3 The Cloud on the Landscape

A SEASON OF DARKNESS CHAPTER 3: THE CLOUD ON THE LANDSCAPE (1) 1. I have this pet theory that adults and children come from different planes of existence. I mean, they occupy the same Cartesian space and everything, but they seem to inhabit totally separate realities. You probably couldn't write a dissertation on the subject, but if you think back to your own childhood, you'll realize it has to be true. A child's world is huge and bright and wonderfully unpredictable; a place...

Darkness and LightChapter 25 Dancing in the Dark

The sound of booming horns hadn’t faded yet as the war machines setup along the frontline shot their first volley of missiles. The Manthakin army used every kind of war machine known on Calmyra. Ballistae, catapults and trebuchets in every form and size, hurled their arrows and javelins, jars and pots filled with burning or explosive mixtures, or simply large rocks at the defenders of Vernya. Roban watched several burning jars made of clay thrown in his direction, but they overflew his...

Darkness and LightChapter 29 Dusk

The sun had vanished behind the mountains when Ghania finished her tale. It was silent, and in the twilight of dusk the lands looked peaceful again. Maybe even the dead on the battlefield felt at peace, at least until their souls arrived at the Underworld. For the day’s survivors it was no more than an armed truce, and for some of them there wasn’t any rest at all. The fighting continued within the seclusion of their minds. Another war fought on another battlefield. “It was you; it’s all...

Deep under the earth, in the realm of gloom, and death Hades sat contemplating his predicament. There on his thrown, sitting next to his three-headed dog Cerberus, was Hades clothed in dark robes, waves of silk black hair to his shoulders, a beard like most Greeks which showed his intelligence that was achieved over the many centuries, weaved with the muscles of a true male god, and the face of a warrior who has had to live an existence in the darkness far too long....

Darkness and LightChapter 27 Of painful Light and vengeful Darkness

Athea watched Feya’s daughter riding away through the thousands of risen dead. The dead ignored her and continued clawing their path in the opposite direction. Farther in the west, the Norgar were chasing the Manthakin army towards the mountains. Tomorrow they could close them in, and end the battle with the biggest massacre in the history of Calmyra. Bigger even than the massacre in the north, where fifty-thousand Ogusi riders were ready to trample down the Ghallan Clans. The slaughter of...

Darkness and LightChapter 34 The Power of Gods

They watched him. His face was contorted in anger and his fists balled so tightly that his nails pierced the skin of his palms. Blood seeped from his fists on the wooden surface beneath his hands, forming a slowly growing puddle. There was a new god at their table and he was a very furious god. “She betrayed me.” The sentence escaped through his grinding teeth. The silence was broken, and then it was totally destroyed when loud laughter exploded from the others at the table. “May I suggest...

Kassidi grunted as they loaded the last of the lumber into the van. "Let me put up the cart and we'll leave." Brian said. "Cool." As Brian took the cart back she got in and took a much needed drink from her water bottle. "Where to now?" She asked when Brian got back. "Winterton. There's a store I want to check out." Eternal Darkness Chapter Two

___________________________________________________________________________________________ Here is the next chapter of Eternal Darkness. Please don't forget to rate and comment. Chapter Two: The Eternal Master and a Homecoming Richard noticed two things simultaneously; he was alive and he was freezing cold. He opened his eyes to find that he was lying in a pile of snow three feet deep and the thin coat he had been wearing did nothing to keep the cold from his body....

Descent Into DarknessChapter 8

"For me?" she had never seen anything so beautiful. It looked like it was spun from the finest of silk and the black lace on the sleeves and bodice was of the softest quality. "It's beautiful," she said. "Where did you get it and who was it for?" "It comes from Paris and it had belonged to the woman who was to be my wife. But, alas, she never got to wear it." And his face clouded up, "But never mind that! It now belongs to you. Here, let's slip it on." He helped her with it as...

Law of the BloodChapter 4 The Executioner

Roban thought about yesterday’s events after the girls had left but that got him horny, so he stood up to relieve his bladder and wash. He was hungry but before he went out to search for food there was knocking on the door. After he called out, “Come in”, the door opened and a woman he hadn’t seen before entered. The woman was of regal beauty somewhere in between twenty-five and thirty. High cheek bones, a thin straight nose, intelligent sparkling blue eyes and a rather small mouth with thin...

Seasoned Pussy Part 1

My high school years was going really good. I had learned about sex and was trying to fuck every girl I could. I was up to eight, two long term girlfriends and six girls that I banged several times and tossed. My best bud lived across the street from me. His mom, Rose, was like a second mom to me. Rose and I were pretty close. She was a short little Hispanic woman, not over five foot tall and chubby, like a ball with arms and legs. She had always flirted with me from the day I met her. Alot of...

HARBINGER OF DARKNESS CHAPTER TWO

HARBINGER OF DARKNESSA DEVIANT EBOOK MINI-NOVELLA BY Amanda WrighterCHAPTER TWO “I don’t understand,” Morgana complained as Lilith d**g her out of their spacious room. “I don’t have time to tell you again, Morgana. Just go, and for fuck’s sake, do as you’re told. He will be…less hostile if you are complacent.” Lilith pushed Morgana out of the door and slammed it shut behind her. Morgana stormed off down the hallway and headed for the Master’s lair. She had no idea what He wanted with her....

To Break a Wishbone

To Break a Wishbone By Robyn Thanksgiving. Not my favorite time of year certainly. For most it is the time each year one gets to share the company of friends while eating a grand meal. For me too, Thanksgiving is the one day when all my family gets together from all over the country to celebrate together. Aside from being a time of turkey and talk, though, it is also the time of criticism and comparison. You see, I was born a twin. The "older one" as I'm constantly reminded of....

Dawn of the Federation Book II Darkness on the Edge of SpaceChapter 18 Hadrian

He desperately tried to maintain his stiff upper lip as his life came crashing down around him. Swaying slightly, like a willow tree in a stiff breeze, he listened with barely half an ear to the explanation of healer Lorat. It was infuriatingly calm, clinical and void of emotion. "I don't believe you," he growled, beside himself with grief and rage. "There she is, completely uninjured except for the bump on the head when she slumped over. If this is some skulduggery here, rest assured,...

Darkness and LightChapter 13 The Cats Outta The Bag

The Ogusi Fusans had witnessed the preparation of Jenaya and her departure. Obviously disapproving of what had happened they were frowning at Roban and the remaining women. “So the mystical might of the Norgar Chieftains lies in his blood and you use it to task a woman with the job of a warrior. The legends of the Norgar never spoke of such cowardice,” Fusan Djargis said. All the women spun around, their furious glares colliding with the Ogusi’s condemnation. “You are lucky that I know...

I Love You Stephanie Mahoney

I fell in love at an early age. Really early. I remember it clear as day, seven years old, like a bolt of lightning. Her name was Stephanie Mahoney, and she was a sixteen year old goddess assigned to babysit my precocious little self. I told her within minutes of her walking through the door that I planned on marrying her, and bless her, she didn’t laugh, just smiled and said she liked younger men, but she expected to be kept in a certain fashion when we did get married. My parents were in a...

Harry Potter and the Shadows of EvilChapter 1 Hermione

Hermione Granger clutched the old tome she had found closely to her chest as she moved through the halls of Hogwarts back towards the entrance to the Room of Requirements. 5 weeks into the school break, several members of the so-called Dumbledore's Army had returned to school for a little over a week (with their respective parent's permission, of course, or in Harry's case, cowed acceptance from his uncle, who was really more than happy to have him out of the house.) With Dumbledore's...

Black Puma Cats ClawChapter 5 Darkness is My Bride

Jason Griggs rose early that morning. His empire crumbled around him, and he had to oversee the destruction. His mind teetered between sanity and psychosis as his guilt consumed him. By killing his twin, Jason had in effect, murdered a part of himself. The most terrible part of it all, Jason Griggs was fully aware his world was crashing down around him, yet nothing he could do would stop it from happening. That bitch. That Black Puma bitch had brought this on him. Griggs stopped at the door,...

Enter the DarknessChapter 19 The Exorcism of Belfast

July, 1989 "Two someones actually, my lord," an elegant baritone voice said behind me. Glancing over my shoulder I saw someone standing in a darkened doorway I had not noticed earlier. Alexandrios of Byzantium stepped into the subdued lighting of the warehouse. There were a couple of spots of what I had to assume were blood on the frilly white shirt he wore. It was almost like those shirts the heroes always wore in the old pirate movies except it had frills down the front and at the...

Darkness and LightChapter 22 Sensitivities

Menja lay curled up on her side under an ash tree at the garden of the estate they called their home. Her back was snuggled into Bosko’s side as he lay dozing behind her. Her eyes were open but her gaze was blank. I don’t understand. You love Atady and want him to be your daddy. He loves you too and he wants to be your daddy. Why are you sad? “Because it’s not real, I’m a bastard,” Menja answered sniffling. There are no dragons, no faeries and no bastards on Calmyra. I never made one. “If...

Seasonal DaughtersChapter 9

We woke up together in the morning. I sent the girls to their bathroom and Laura to mine. I went downstairs to start coffee and fiddle around. When it was ready, I took two cups upstairs. I came to my bedroom and knocked. I heard Laura say, "Come in, Paul." I entered and saw her pull her panties on. I was in love with the woman inside but sure did like the outside packaging! I thought for a second and realized I should say something. I walked to her and gave her a soft kiss and put her...

A Season of Darkness Chapter 2

CHAPTER 2: DEFINING MOMENTS 1. Much to my relief, Mom never said a word about my morning with the neighbors. Truth be told, she didn't say much about anything; she was too far gone by that stage. As I said, Mom had turned a little weird after Dad left. She'd quit her job and taken up drinking as an occupation, parking herself in front of the TV most days. That was the main reason why I'd been sitting out on the porch the morning the Rineharts turned up. She tended to wake up with a...

Darkness and LightChapter 14 The Beginning the Way and the End

Roban entered the house and was greeted by Patessa and Nigulla. They led him to a room on the first floor and rushed away before he opened the door. Light was coming from candleholders on the walls to either side of the entrance and a stack of wood was burning in a fireplace on the one outer wall of the room. Although it was a small room, a large four poster bed was placed in its center. The figure of a small girl huddled in a corner of the bed. It was the corner farthest away from Denyssa at...

Darkness and LightChapter 33 Chaos and Deception

Kassja leaned over the Emperor and whispered in his ear. “ ... Deliver this message with my best regards to my mother and Family,” Kassja finished, and then pushed Dharkuntis off his throne. There he lay, with blankly staring eyes, while his blood poured out of the wound in his throat and his existence was forced to leave Calmyra. Out of the corner of her eyes Kassja watched a guard storming towards her. He was roaring in anger and armed with a long spear. Two steps and he dropped to the...

Seasonal Dates a Simple Christmas StoryChapter 3

Monday was a normal day. I ate with Kathy and only said that I met an interesting girl named Nadia at Sunday school the day before. Of course, I said nothing about any deal. Tuesday morning, I sent Nadia a text. She responded moments later telling me to come at a quarter before twelve. I sent back, “Okay.” I told Kathy that I was having lunch with Nadia today. She grinned and waved me off. I left, giving me three minutes to get in my car and drive five hundred feet. I walked in on time. I...

Morgans CurseChapter 4 The Darkness Within

I opened my eyes to a fuzzy, unfocused world. While I was more developed than a normal infant at birth, my eyes still didn't want to focus completely. I could make out Argyle looking down on me sadly, as well as 14-year-or-so-old Merlin, and his guardian. The wizard was still rubbing his throat where I'd been choking him, and he'd put on a smoking jacket to cover up. "I request the honor of killing her myself," Argyle said. Merlin gave Argyle a half smile. "Your compassion is...

Anniversary Waltz 3 Darkness Considered as an Elemental Plot DeviceChapter 2

The sun burned off some of the night's humidity as it rose fat and orange on the second day. It pierced the condo's waterside windows, pushing everyone out of bed. The showers could only offer cold water, and even that was closer to tepid. The morning was filled with petty annoyances: nicks and cuts from shaving, three different people going through the motions of making coffee before each realized the futility, sighs over chocolate melted into the contents of a too-hastily packed...

Shadows in the DarknessChapter 2

One of the quirks of Susan’s journey into the realm of the dark was that she found her other senses were suddenly laden with increasing power and strength. It served to make her appreciate the unsuspected pleasures of simply standing near others and inhaling their essence. She developed the ability to feel the vibrations of their aura sweep over her skin and even inside her body when the dark was upon her. Susan knew instinctively that she needed those triggers to satisfy her need for...

Darkness and LightChapter 37 The Slippery Slope to Success

After Roban had left the dinner table Athea took Rhabina, Hassika and Leandris aside. She had noticed their drawn faces and their uneasy movements throughout the meal. “What happened?” She asked the trio. “I followed Roban like you told me to do. He was at the smithy again, and at the market place. On the way back home he went inside a barn. When he didn’t come out again, I wanted to peek inside to see what was going on, and he noticed me.” Rhabina reported. “And you two?” Athea questioned...

Darkness and LightChapter 24 Simple Answers

Athea lay on Roban’s wide chest, her eyes were closed but she was not sleeping. Lying on her brother, her arms wrapped around his neck, feeling his big hand possessively holding her butt and listening to his slow, steady heartbeat, was the one place she normally felt safe and at home. But she didn’t feel safe tonight. His body was warm and alive but an empty hull, his mind and awareness gone where she could not follow. Athea felt alone lying on her brother’s chest, but that wasn’t true...

Josie in Tombstone

After all the noise and smoke and killings of 1881, Tombstone, Arizona began attracting scribes the way a buffalo corpse attracts vultures and flies. It seemed as if every newspaper back East had to have an eyewitness account of the big shootout between the Earps and the Clantons. These overly romantic seekers of Truth and Beauty inevitably ended up sitting across from Big Minnie, buying her drink after drink at the Bird Cage Theater and scribbling furiously in their journals. Minnie had a way...

Enter the Darkness

This story is a pseudo X Men fan fiction which takes place in the same world as my story The Ice Queen Cometh. Enter the Darkness By Morpheus I clenched my eyes shut, groaning as I rubbed at my temples, praying to a God that I didn't really believe in for my headache to go away. The migraines had been coming a lot lately, and this one was worse than any of the ones that I'd ever felt before. It felt as though my very head was going to split open... "Why me?" I groaned out,...
