It was after the first of the year when Jackie suggested taking a

The cabbie laughed and Jackie giggled.
Once back at the house, it felt warmer. The effect of the new furnace
that had been installed while they were on vacation was inviting them to
slip out of their coats. Jackie walked down to the basement to see if
the men working there left a mess. To her surprise it was cleaner than
when she left it. On a nearby workbench that she never used was her key
and a bill for the work. Pleased, Jackie would send them a check in the
morning.
They made some BLT's and tea for a late dinner. Both were anxious to get
back to work. The kitchen was warmer than ever. After eating and

'Samuel and me attended a dinner at a friend's house. He was a doctor

'His application to the United States was denied due to Roosevelt's

up residence in Mexico and lived about fifty miles east of Mexico City.
Doctor Henry said that this Jewish doctor had made a breakthrough in

We just let Doctor Henry explain how that doctor in Mexico could change

"I guess they must have had it down pat earlier. Samuel or Sylvia didn't
want any publicity so she may have become one of the first who had it

"Let me find out more. Sarah seems to write a lot more about it than
Sylvia."
Sarah had called a Doctor Isador Feinstein in Mexico who assured her
that he had performed over fifty gender changes and all of his

write and give her names of people who had gone through this procedure.
A week later, they received in the mail the names, addresses and
telephone numbers as promised. Sarah called or wrote to all twenty of

trip. We presented our tickets, had the porters deliver our four cases

'I've never seen Samuel so happy as the train slowly nudged forward
taking us to our destination. There would be stops in Saint Louis,
Kansas City, Dallas, Houston and then the border. Then we'd take a
Mexican train southward to Mexico City where Doctor Feinstein would meet
us.
'I looked at my sister, or soon to be sister, with amusement. She looked
like a child on Christmas morning just before opening her mountain of

'The ride was a long, tiring one. We were in our room and I felt sorry
for the people in coach class who had to endure less comfort than we
did. The train couldn't get there fast enough but all the stops were at
least two hours long. We didn't mind Saint Louis because it arrived

'Three days later, we were met by Doctor Feinstein in Mexico with his
son, Benjamin. We could not believe how short the doctor was. Samuel and
I were five foot five inches and we towered over him.
'Benjamin was much taller at around about 5' 10". He was polite and was
a very nice young man. He arranged for all our baggage to be uplifted
from the train and loaded it up in a truck. He followed us down a long
winding road toward the clinic.
'The road had been recently paved by the government but it took us two
and a half hours to finally arrive. We were so weary from the long trip,
we both ate a light meal Mrs. Feinstein made for us and then retired for

said the hormones were perfect and told us of some of his patients
having setbacks because they took some other kinds. He then examined

'We were already to go. As soon as the morphine was delivered, Sylvia
would go under the knife.'
"I've got to the point where Sylvia is going to get her gender change,"
Jackie said, finishing that part of the journal and reaching for the
rest. She was writing notes of interest, what pages and the journal
number it could be found under in case for future reference.
"Samuel just is telling about waking up as a full female but under the
cloud of drugs."
"What else?"

"I'll be damned," Jackie mumbled. "Look, we're at a crossroads here, I
think it's time for us to get some Italian pasta and take in a movie."
