He was free. Free to drift down the corridors of the subconscious,
travelling as he would please between two realms, but at his journey's
end, he could only reach one destination, once and for all. The door
slammed behind him, there would be no going back. He was trapped, and
on either side of him, two rooms, two worlds, two lives.
Lining the corridor were innumerable photographs, portraits and
depictions hanging on the wall. He took his first step, and was
compelled to continue, looking back and forth.
At his left, a birth. Catherine and Michael Mazursky gather in the
nativity ward to admire their new baby. Michael gleamed with joy at the
infant and Catherine merely sat with exhaustion, reverent at the life
that she had created. The nurses looked on.
To his right, the very same scene. The positions were the same, only
with one minor difference. Catherine was still exhausted and the nurses
could still be seen gathered at the edge of the frame. Michael still
held the baby, but looked more in wonder than with pride. It was not a
look of disappointment, but one of confusion, of burden.
He continued to walk, pausing and admiring, one by one, the stills on
either side. At his left, the toddler Robert Mazursky plays with the
other children. He his pushing a toy train along a wooden track, while
other boys cheer on. He's got a little mushroom cut and overalls.
At the right, young Rebecca Mazursky tucks a baby doll into bed on the
carpet in kindergarten, while the boys play with train sets. Her dark
hair is in pigtails, and her cheeks are rosy.
At the left, 10-year-old Robert hits a double in tee ball and his
parents cheer him on.
At the right, 10-year-old Rebecca performs in a piano recital. Her
parents applaud, although her father wishes he'd been at home watching
the World Series.
Robert could be seen in the next photo a year later, stealing a kiss
from Carolyn Davis under a pine tree in the fifth grade. Afterward, he
would be high-fived by several of his friends. His hair is a mess, and
there is mud on his shoes and shirt. It's a dreary late fall day.
Rebecca, in her next picture, was at a slumber party. They laugh and
eat cookies while talking about how cute Christopher Davis is. She's
dressed in a pink robe, with her hair tastefully in a ponytail.
He examines a picture of Robert trying out for the baseball team his
freshman year. He didn't make the team, despite giving his all. He
spent the next year going to the gym religiously, hoping to make it.
He turns and glances at a photo of Rebecca, sitting at home on a Friday
night. She has glasses by this time and her hair just falls over her
desk as she sits, hunched over, writing her English essay late at
night. It's only the ninth grade, but she is determined to keep her
grades up.
Robert sits on a couch with a girl, watching "Reality Bites." He has
his arm around her and is going for a kiss. He's sent his little sister
to her friend's house for the night.
Rebecca is at the library. She has a novel study due and is not about
to break her streak of A+. There's no way she could get her work done
at home, not with her little brother and his maniac friends terrorizing
the house.
The next photo in the Robert collection is a rather dirty one. He
smiles as he examines it closely. Robert has mounted Carolyn Davis, his
hands on her breasts, he is prepared to penetrate for the very first
time. They both seem to have an intense look of passion on their faces.
Rebecca's next photo is not nearly so vulgar. In fact, she isn't even
in focus. She sits in the background, many rows back in the cafeteria
with a book on the table and a pencil in her ear, as Christopher Davis
talks to Lisa Miller. He'd asked Rebecca out first, but she couldn't be
with him. She was too intimidated, and busy with her studies.
The next picture of Rebecca catches his eye. She's in a graduation cap
and gown, smiling with her loving parents.
He turns and looks at the picture of Robert across from it. He's in his
first car, a cherry red Dodge he really loved. He was too busy working
to pass his Math exam and had to graduate the next year. That's what
his next picture is.
Rebecca's next photo is a cheerful one. She is getting to know her
dorm-mate at Georgetown University, a place she's always dreamt of
going. She's not going to break her study habits, but she is going to
learn to loosen up.
The next picture down, of Robert, sees the young man working his summer
job, working for the city, filling potholes. He never liked the orange
vest.
Across from it is a very tasteful photo of young Rebecca, not quite
twenty, at last being made love to by an older man at her University,
Brian Stack. The lighting is dim and the focus is soft, she looks like
an angel as he embraces her.
Robert is depicted, in the next photo, trying to buckle down and focus
in on his studies at Valleycrest College, a community institute. He's
getting into philosophy, trying to broaden his horizons.
This is situated directly across from Rebecca's graduation. She
cheerfully holds her diploma, smile as Brian Stack rests his arm on her
shoulder.
It seems like a mistake, but there are no repeat photographs. It's a
completely different picture of Robert working the asphalt. He just
didn't have the funds to continue his education at Valleycrest. He
works in the hot sun; sweat clinging to his temples, wondering what to
do now.
Meanwhile, Rebecca can be seen, in the photograph directly across from
Robert's second road crew photo, in her smart business suit. It's a
fiery red. Even though Brian left her and moved away, she is getting on
with her life. She works as a paralegal, and has in her step, a great
confidence.
Robert smiles, holding his briefcase in his apartment. He was lucky
enough to find a decent job in sales, with much promise for promotion.
He's going to work hard and earn himself a place in management. His
tie's a little crooked and his sleeves are rolled up, but he looks
respectable.
Rebecca, too, smiles, but she's not holding any briefcase. She's on
vacation in the Caribbean, lounging by the beach, dressed in a skimpy
bathing suit and sipping a cocktail. Seated by her side is a tanned
young man by the name of Jacob Brennan. He's a lawyer, and encouraging
her to get her degree. In three weeks, he is going to propose to her.
Robert stands at the altar with his wife, Jane Mazursky (nee Brennan.)
They haven't known each other quite a year yet, but she is the best
thing going in his life. Things are looking up. He's been given a raise
and has the respect of his fellow salesmen during his time with the
company.
Rebecca Brennan is being offered a piece of cake at her wedding
reception. Her husband, Jacob, stands next to her. They are leaving for
their honeymoon later tonight, in Niagara Falls.
Sitting at his desk, exhausted, Robert keeps his eye on the clock. Any
minute now, he expects his wife's call, but he cannot leave work. He
has to finish his sales report and be a good company man, because after
three years he hasn't advanced as far as they said he would.
Jacob and Rebecca stand on the front steps of their first home, a
modest two-level in the suburbs. She's four months pregnant and has
that glow about her. He kisses her neck. She is on maternity leave, but
will never give birth. She will have a miscarriage.
Knowing this, he continues to drift, the lonely figure in the
corridors. He has almost reached the end, with the doors in sight.
The next picture of Robert warms his heart. It is of a visit to Grandma
and Grampa Mazursky with new baby Rochelle. They are in awe of the
infant's beauty.
The picture across from it is a puzzle. It is not of Rebecca at all,
but of a diamond ring sitting lonely on a table. How else would one
depict divorce? If only Jacob hadn't been so obsessed with children, it
might not have worked out this way. He considered her a failure, but
she knew she couldn't help her biology. She does not consider herself a
failure. In fact, she succeeds in taking the house, and the car, for
her own.
Robert Mazursky and his lovely wife are at their daughter's
kindergarten Halloween pageant. They applaud, dotingly, but he would
rather be somewhere else. That somewhere doesn't involve watching
baseball, however.
Rebecca didn't normally dress so freely, but tonight was a special
occasion. She had just passed the bar and was celebrating with her
friends at a bar. It was supposed to be a girl's night, but they had
the ulterior motive of finding her a good man, at least for the night.
She is dressed in a low-cut cocktail dress and is still young enough to
look gorgeous in it. She was approached by many young men, but only
paid attention to the one in the picture. He's handsome, tall, with a
shaved head. He offers to buy her a drink. She accepts.
Robert is in a car late one night, in the rain. He wasn't expecting
such a heavy drizzle, but it was late November. He is not alone in the
car. There is a young blonde girl in the passenger's seat. They are
pulling into a motel for the night.
Rebecca, too, was caught off-guard by the drizzle. She was really
hoping to keep her date with Kyle, the gentleman from the bar, but the
roads are so busy, it's almost dangerous.
The next picture, on both sides, was taken only moments later. Robert
is lying in the hospital bed, attached to a respirator. The young
blonde girl waits by his side. This is only moments before Mrs.
Mazursky barges in and the two have a confrontation.
In Rebecca's, she is alone, fighting for her life as well.
There were no further pictures; only a pair of doors.
He had wondered why, in his coma, he had been brought to this strange
place, but understood its purpose intuitively. He thought the decision
would be an easy one once he reached the end. He knew the saying about
"life flashing before your eyes," but never thought that there might be
two, and that he'd have to choose.
At first, he thought he knew what was right, but examining the pictures
of Rebecca's life, he wondered about it. He had made so many mistakes,
and he knew that if he could, he would go back and do things right. He
knew now that he could have things right and not have to re-do anything
at all.
He pressed his hands to the door and closed his eyes.
In Mercy Memorial Hospital, Rebecca Mazursky's eyes fluttered open. The
doctor's rushed in and did all the tests. She was conscious, this was
for real.
"You gave us a scare, Rebecca," the doctor told her, "we didn't know if
you were going to make it. You were in a car crash."
Rebecca said nothing. She felt she'd had the strangest dream, but
couldn't put her finger on it. All she remembered was that she was
going to cheat on her husband-
No, no, that wasn't right. Her divorce had been finalized over a year
ago.
She couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong, but nobody
could explain what it was, other than the sensation of waking up from
the coma. When she went back to work, she was determined to do her job
better than ever. No easy task, considering she was already considered
one of the best in the state.
But she knew how important it was to be the best. After all, she knew
from experience: you only get one chance.
