Chris Silverstein checked his tie and hair in the washroom before
making one last look in the mirror. He certainly dressed the part of
a thirty-something executive. A new suit, a new haircut, and

breath and went back out into the empty office space.
The dark cubicles and office rooms seemed even more forbidding in

nodded in passing to the young woman who studiously noted his passage
while returning to the MCAT prep book she had been working on when he

"Welcome to Kayle Technologies, Mr. Silverstein. Mr. Kayle is
running a few minutes late, but he will be with you as soon as he is
ready." A small nameplate on her desk said Barbara Pope, and her

she was all business.
As Chris sat back down in the neat but well worn leather couch, he
wondered if she was always this cold, or if it was just the
frustration of having to come into the office during a Saturday
morning. The phone rang and she seemed shocked for a moment, but
answered it efficiently while entering information into her computer.
She went back to work, and Chris went back to reading the news
magazine he had found there, or at least he went through the motions,
since his mind was clearly on the task at hand.
A fifth interview, this time with the owner of the firm. Aaron Kayle
had a reputation as a family man, a hard worker, who treated his
employees well and made a good deal of money in the process. His
impeccable record of success balanced against the kind of attitude
that Chris was looking for.
Chris had been struggling with the next phase in his career,
primarily because he was running out of excuses why he wasn't
managing his own department. He had been around the block more than a
few times and at age 35 he had spent his entire adult life in the IT
field. His own broad range of skills as well as success leading
projects and even running his own consulting firm were clearly
valuable, but a part of him was tired of having to be in charge all
the time. He had been the sort of defacto leader too many times, with
his need to succeed forcing him to take charge and make the team
better at the cost of his own stress. He had finally decided to bite
the bullet and step up and take a real position of authority. If he
had to be in charge he might as well get the rewards.
Still having a boss like Aaron Kayle would hopefully give him the
kind of environment and support he would need to manage that stress.
Stuck in his head, re-exploring his past experiences and his strategy
for this interview, Chris was surprised to hear another voice from
the reception area. Looking up, he could see it wasn't Aaron Kayle,
and he went back to reading. He assumed it had to be another staffer
at the firm, since he hung on to the reception desk and chatted
quietly with Ms. Pope as if they were old friends. His assumption
seemed assured when she suddenly pealed off into a very warm giggle
and said, "Ya think?"
Chris looked up with a little surprise at first, as the young lady
waved her finger tips near her lips, and then the dark haired fellow
said, "Oh definitely, it's a perfect match. Pink is definitely your
color, Bubbles." She giggled again and went back to doing her nails.
"Cool! You can take a seat over there by... Um... That guy. Chris?
Yuh, Chris! He is also here for the job! The boss is totally caught
up in something but he is gonna be ready in a little bit." She
cracked her gum and said, "'K babe?"
Chris tried to keep calm. He had been told he was the only candidate
at the moment, and had felt that after doing such a good job with the
battery of exams and interviews that he was really going through a
formality. If Aaron warmed to him, there was nothing standing in his
way. Now there was this other guy.
"Matt Carson," holding out a hand and smiling from above. Chris
reached out awkwardly and dropped his briefcase and magazine in the
process of trying to stand up.
"Hey let me help you with that." Matt picked up a stack of resumes
that had slipped out and handed them back, reserving one.
"You mind?" Chris nodded, although he didn't honestly know why. He
felt like there was some disadvantage to letting this competitor see
his qualifications. Surely that was a bad idea, however the words
just came out of his mouth. "Go ahead."
Matt looked over the blue-gray sheets of paper and shook his head in
what seemed almost a sense of awe. "Damn that's something. I can
hardly believe anyone would have this much experience and look as
young as you do. You aren't exaggerating, are you?"
Chris smiled widely and felt his confidence rising for the first
time. "Nope, I had to cut a lot of stuff out to fit it in only two
pages."
"16 years of experience. PRETTY BROAD range of experiences at that.
Very exotic."
Chris nodded and relaxed a bit. He could see that Matt was impressed
even if he didn't seem as worried as he might have been. A cool
customer, this guy. He had to be, if he was going to an interview
like this dressed in sneakers and jeans. Matt looked it over again
and ran his fingers down the page as he said, "Honestly, you swear
that everything on this paper describes your work experience entirely
honestly? It hardly seems possible that you could have done all this
by what, 25?"
Chris blushed and shook her head, "Well a few more years than that
but thanks for the compliment."
Matt sat down at the couch and relaxed, Chris leaned forward a
little while recrossing her legs.
"You swear everything on this page is going to be 100% true."
Chris grinned and said slowly. "Five nines at least."
Matt smiled and said "OK, well it says excellent attention to detail."
Chris noticed as Matt spoke that he had perfect teeth. She also
thought his eyes were slightly crossed, and his lips had a small
crease on the left side that made him seem to be smirking a bit. A
little strand of gray hair hid above his formerly pierced right ear.
His shoes had a little more wear on the left than the right and she
wondered if he had some sort of limp.
Looking past him to the artwork across from Aaron Kayle's office,
she noticed desert scenes and a picture of him with a heavyweight
champion. Probably Vegas. The receptionist was tapping her hot pink
go-go boots and kept adjusting her push-up bra and white opaque

Matt continued, "Completes tasks within budget and deadline. Well
that's good to hear, especially in your line of work."
"Yes, I feel its important to give people what they pay for and be
completely honest about what they are going to get for their money."
Matt looked up at the artwork and said "Oh, well your experience in
Vegas has got to be a BIG ASSet." Something about the way he said the
last two words bothered Chris but the next thing Matt said rang in
the quiet room. "Damn! You must have been something, to be a real
live Vegas showgirl so young!"
Bubbles looked up and glanced at the pretty older woman sitting with
the young stud. A slight frown marred her vacant looking youthful
face. She wondered what he saw in her, with her fat ass. Some guys
are into that sort of thing, she thought and did a clear coat with
sparkles.
Chris felt a chill run through her body. Something was very strange
about what Matt said, but she kept feeling like it was just the tone
of his voice. It was almost as if he was both impressed with her and
yet in some ways pleased with himself. She thought back to her start
in Vegas, and the hard work. Being a showgirl had been her first
goal, and she had dreamed about one day going further, being an
actress or a choreographer. It hadn't worked out that way but she
thought of it fondly. There was something nice about being just
another pretty girl, totally choreographed, perfectly outfitted, and
made up. She hadn't minded the hard work and it was a good learning
experience in being part of a team.
Matt smiled and watched the woman for a moment and then pointed on
the page."If you don't mind me asking, what happened that you had to
give that up. I mean there is nothing wrong with 'exotic' dancing.

Chris nodded her head and felt a bit dizzy again. Bubbles coughed
and it sounded a little like the word 'boob-job'. Chris confidently
adjusted her stance to show what she had paid so much for. No reason

Still, you must have felt a little disappointed. Was it an injury, or
did you just not get along with management."
Chris felt a little dizzy and adjusted her skirt which had been

Matt nodded and watched shamelessly as Chrissy stood up and went
step by step through her outfit, straightening and posing in front of
the reflection in the glass door of one of the darkened offices. It

Chris had been so tense about having to be in charge, but now it all

at her family and friend's condescension. Barbara Pope had worked so

high achieving friends or her lawyer father and professor of a mom.
She had been studying hard to get an MBA but in the back of her head
she just felt that nothing was good enough. Everyone had expected so
much from her when she was younger and now all she did was answer
phones. She couldn't appreciate the range of duties she was gaining
experience with or how well respected she had been in the office.
Matt's heartstrings were pulled and he was inspired to give her what
she really wanted. It was so hard to start off with such
expectations. Bubbles made soft cooing sounds as she slurped and

Aaron gave him a slap on the back and said "Welcome to the team!"
Chrissy leaned on her desk and said, "Well what now, Sir?"
Matt smiled and gestured her into his office. Chrissy Silverstein's
heart fluttered and she nearly skipped past him, receiving a pat on

thrilled at her new career.
