Vincent arrived home in an excited state, he just browsed a garage sale
and bought some interesting items. One of them a very old floppy disk
with the title magic speller. Vincent thought it was a game that he
didn't know yet. And for a game freak that Vincent was, it was something
he could not resist.
Vincent took the disk from the cover and looked at it. It was such an old
disk, that he had to search in his closet for a long time to get a drive
that could read this quaint old format.
After connecting the very old drive, to his computer Vincent wanted to
try the program as soon as possible, but his stomach growled and looking
at the clock he decided to first eat some leftover pizza.
Coming back to his computer, Vincent let it boot up, anxious to see if
the old drive was still working. Everything seemed to be ok, so he
inserted the floppy disk.
Nothing happened, so he started to browse the disk, fearing it was empty
or something. There was one program and some files with a very strange
file format on the disk. Apparently the program was not self starting.
Vincent double clicked on the program and it started up making the screen
blank.
Fear crept into Vincent's mind and already he thought, 'Oh no, my
computer, what have I done. Is it a virus, or something more
destructive?'
Then the screen came back on showing a nice background with stars. A
line appeared saying: 'The translator to make English into a magic
spell.'
"Bummer," said Vincent out loud.
"This isn't a game, just a translating program."
He was about to click on the button 'Quit' and get on with some other
program's when he had a new thought, 'Maybe I should check it out first,
maybe it's a program that I can have some fun with.'
Vincent sat down and clicked on the button marked 'Enter' and the program
started up. It asked him to enter a sentence and showed the buttons Go
and Cancel.
Vincent wondered what to do now, there was no Help button or any
explanation about what to do or type. Then he just tried something. He
typed in Make a duplicate of the object. Then he clicked Go and watched
as the program showed a running hourglass.
'Great, now it's doing a windows thing and I don't even know what's
happening,' thought Vincent.
Then a line saying, insufficient data, please specify holding or touching
object,' appeared.
Vincent retyped "Make a duplicate of the object I'm touching with my
right index finger."
The program showed the hourglass again, but for a much shorter time. Then
a line appeared.
It said: "Lunjuk kanani sentu nei byek buta."
Beneath it the program said to speak the sentence out loud. Vincent did
just that, while touching his beer can. Then he watched in awe as a
similar can appeared next to the can he touched. He took the second can
and it was just as full or rather half empty as the old one was.
"Fuck, why didn't I use it on a full can."
Then he thought, 'why can't I do that?' He looked at the screen again,
but the line had disappeared and the program had started again to ask for
a sentence to enter.
Vincent shouted, "No, I want the old screen with the line back!" but
there was no button to go back.
Then he typed the same sentence again, but the program came with the
message. This has already been used, please try another sentence.
Vincent thought about typing it using a different finger to touch it, but
then he thought, 'Why not think bigger.'
He typed in: 'Let the winning lottery ticket for next week lottery appear
on the table.'
After a short while the program produced the sentence to speak out loud.
This time Vincent wrote it down on a piece of paper before saying it.
After he said the phrase, a lottery ticket indeed appeared on his table,
but the phrase disappeared from both the computer screen and the paper.
Now Vincent began to understand that after saying it out loud, the phrase
had to disappear as written form, and could not be used again.
What he didn't know however, was that the ticket he now had, disappeared
from its original owner who filed a report that it got stolen. He would
be arrested after using it.
Vincent began thinking wild thoughts about all the things he wanted and
now could get. He started typing, but erased it before using it. He
couldn't decide what he wanted first.
Then he had an idea, he typed: 'Make fro me a beautiful woman.'
Without checking the line he clicked on the Go button not noticing the
typing error. The spelling checker of the program saw the error and
changed the word 'fro' into 'from' instead of 'for'. The program showed
the hourglass for a few seconds.
Then the line: "Gadisa canti buta dar," appeared.
Vincent quickly said the words and doubled over in pain as the spell
started.
Within minutes instead of a young man, there was a very good looking
woman wearing his clothes.
Vincent uttered in a breathy high voice "What the fuck," and stopped when
he heard the sound of a woman.
Then the thought entered his mind that he made a typing error, and
realised that he had written it down so that he got changed.
He turned to the computer and typed: Cancel the last spell I spoke.
The screen flickered and a message appeared: Runtime error, format disk?
Before Vincent could even react, the old decrepit disk drive started to
smoke and flames erupted from the disk. Frantically Vincent moaned in his
high voice, but watched helplessly as the drive and disk were totally
destroyed.
As it all sank in, he or rather she collapsed on the floor realizing that
she was now a woman forever and that there were no more spells to be
made.
