Synopsis: Rob and his step-sister graduate from high school and decide to
attend the same college and share a suite of rooms.
Neither Christine nor I really knew what we wanted to do after graduation

applied to the local community college in the General Studies program -

Bursar's Office didn't even bat an eye as she approved our application.
With that out of the way our thoughts turned to graduation.
Man, am I ready to graduate - not the least reason being that I've heard
about how much money gifts high school graduates receive as graduation
presents. Several weeks before graduation, Christine and I were talking
and she complemented me on how much nicer I look now that I'm more
concerned with my appearance and have begun using some of her cosmetics.
But then she continued, "Of course, there is that one area that we still
need to work on."
"Work on? What are you talking about", I asked.
"Your hair, silly. It could be one of your best assets. It's thick and a
nice honey blond shade. But you've just let it get all long and shaggy
and tangled-looking."
"Yeah, I guess I could get it cut, maybe."
"No. You're not getting it cut. It's a nice length now, it just needs to
be trimmed and styled a little. We'll work on it this Saturday." So that
was that.
Christine started working on my hair in the late morning and kept at it
for the next four hours or so - washing it and putting some lightener on
it, and conditioner, and trimming it, and doing something with it, and
then being unhappy with its look and undoing what she had just done, and
then trimming it some more, and then doing something else to it and
finally saying, "Well, it's not perfect but it's way better than it was.
See how it looks."
Wow, I couldn't believe how great my hair looked when I looked in the
mirror. She had lightened it a little and it was really full and glossy
and she had actually braided it in something she called a "Fishtail
Braid" that hung down my back maybe six or eight inches below my
shoulders. "Oh, Wow! It's beautiful", I burst out, but then I frowned a
little and continued, "And I like it so much but isn't it a little, well,
feminine?"
"Oh don't get hung up on that whole boy's styles-versus-girl's styles
thing. If it looks good on you and you like it, it's right for you. Come
on, you can take me to a movie at the mall to thank me for all my efforts
today", and she paused for a second or two and then continued, "And to
prove to you that the boy's styles-versus-girl's styles is a bunch of
crap, I've got something that would look darling on you", and she went
into her room and came back several minutes later with what looked like a
yellow shirt. As she handed it to me and I held it up to look at it I

there be, like, a law or something that says that a theatre can't charge
more for snacks than a grocery store can?" Christine just looked at me

In bed that night I kept going over and over everything that had happened

from now on." I was going to argue with her but I remembered that she
wins most of the arguments so I didn't say anything.
