Wildfire
This is a story that I started, and wrote a few chapters of, on another
site several years ago. I'm not comfortable with just bringing it here,
so I'm rebooting the whole thing. I know, some of the characters are
blatant rip offs, but the idea for this story came to me almost 30 years
ago. Some of the characters reflect that. I admit that although these
are Marvel characters, the name Wildfire is a dedication to my all time
favorite, a member of DC's Legion of Superheroes. He was unique, to say
the least. The whole story, I dedicate to Stan Lee, a true super
genious, and Lester Dent, the man behind the pen name Kennith Robeson,
and creator of Doc Savage. Without Doc, there may have never been comic
books. I hope you enjoy, let me know.
My name is Wildfire. If you were to look at me, you would see a young
woman of 19 or so. I am not afraid to admit that I turn a lot of men's
heads. I have brown hair and eyes, and skin so tan that it's almost
bronze in appearance. I also attract attention because of my outfit,
but I'll get to that later. Why do I have only one name? That's the
whole nature of my origin. Yeah, I said origin. I am definitely
different.
It started out in a strange way as it was. I was different from birth,
in that I was a mutant. I knew from almost the beginning that I was
one. My parents raised me as normal, but I couldn't help but notice the
effect that I had on certain other people. It turned out that close
proximity to me caused other mutant's powers to be magnified, and in a
lot of cases, focused. Hey, it wasn't something cool, like super-
strength, but it was something. It definitely wasn't the only thing
that made me different, but that was a secret that even I didn't know
until I was older, and one that would have dire consequences for a lot
of people. My name was David Lamb. I was extremely good in school,
studying mutations, and finished High School at 15, college at 18, and
had a doctorate in Biology at 21, in time to celebrate becoming an
adult. At 18, my parents told me my true heritage. It was filled with
mystery, which I tried to solve while I was studying, but in the end, I
decided to use my powers, and my degree, where it would be put to the
best use. I had known of the X-Men, and the Professor X's school for
mutants for a long time. It hadn't taken me long to figure out that I
must also have some way to unconsciously conceal the fact that I was a
mutant.
I figured out that the best way to introduce myself was with a splash.
I showed up near the Mansion the School was in, and stopped concealing
that I was a mutant. It didn't take long for Cerebro (their computer)
to sense me. The Professor, and a couple of other of the X- Men showed
up at the gate in street clothes. I said, "You don't know it yet, but
we need each other." I also had a fair amount of ability to block
telepaths, although some of that was training. I opened up myself so
that the Professor could tell I was speaking the truth, but held some
back. He had a brief discussion with the others with him, and then
someone else wandered up. I could smell his cigar from a mile away.
The legendary Logan, also known as Wolverine. He was wrapped up in who
I really was, and I was trying to figure out if he would know the family
connection. He asked who I was, and they told him what they knew. The
Professor said, "I can sense that he is holding back something, but that
it is personal, and will tell it in his own time." They opened the gate
for me, and I went in. The Professor said, "We don't have any extra
staff rooms, but if you don't mind a converted dorm room, you'll be
okay." I was just happy to be here. Logan said, "I'll take him to his
room." This must have been out of character for him, because the others
looked a little surprise. We walked into the Mansion, and he explained
things as we went, but didn't say anything until we got to my room.
When the door closed, he told me, "I know that there is something
familiar about you, kid. You remind me of someone, but I don't know
who. I just get a good vibe off the memory, and off of you. If you
don't give me cause not to, you have my trust, and friendship." He
turned to leave, and let me get settled in. I said, "It's good to see
you again, Logan, although you wouldn't remember. My Dad said to say
hello if I saw you again." He turned and looked at me, and I could see
that something was starting to come together, but he left.
The room was small, but nice. A young man named Peter, that I knew was
Colossus, and a girl that introduced herself as Kitty, came to help.
Peter changed form, and did most of the heavy lifting as we shifted out
the extra bed, and brought in a desk and computer. They called me
"Doctor Lamb", but I told them David would be just fine outside the
classroom. I knew they would ask me to teach biology to the kids,
especially since it was my field. When we were all done, it was time
for dinner. I found that there wasn't much separation at the tables-
just sit where you want. I sat with Logan, Kitty, Peter, and another
girl who was about 13. Her name was Kaleah, but everyone called her
Kayli. She was about average size for that age, blond hair and blue
eyes. She whispered to Kitty, and then asked me shyly, "Are you the one
who they say is able to help people with their powers?." I said, "I
sure am. I assume this is why Kitty brought us together for dinner"?
She nodded, and Kitty blushed, knowing she'd been caught. I said,
"Since tomorrow is an off- day from school, why don't you drop by where
I'll be setting up my lab." We finished dinner, and I went back to my
room. I got on the computer, and hooked up on the secure server to
communicate with my parents. I told them, "I'm in. Logan may figure
out who I am before I'm ready to ask for help, but otherwise
everything's fine. I really like it here, and am glad I came." I
closed down the connection, surfed for a while, and then went to bed.
It had been a long day getting here, and getting in.
The next morning, after breakfast, Kayli walked with me to check out my
new lab. I enjoyed that it was all casual dress around here. And, I
had gotten a chance to meet most of the main group of the original X-
Men, who had been off on a mission. Jean said, "I have a feeling that
when you decide to let the Professor and I in, it will be an incredible
story. I smiled, and told her, "You don't know the half of it." I met
Hank McCoy, and told him he was one of my idols (it was true). He
walked with Kayli and I since his lab was that way. I wondered what his
blue fur would look like up close, but it didn't look weird- just
natural somehow. He showed me around his lab, and then I saw that some
kind people had set up mine very similar. It had a small office with
another computer, and then a ton of equipment, including some I'd seen
in only two other places, one of them which only nine people had ever
seen. I got everything straightened out, with Hank and Kayli helping,
and then Hank went to his lab. Kayli and I went into my office, and sat
down. I asked her, "So tell me about your problem." I already had
called her file up on my computer, but wanted to hear tell it herself.
She said, "It started with a lightening strike near me. We were playing
softball for Gym way past when we should have quit with the storm
nearby. I was batting, and the pitcher had just thrown the ball, when
it struck. Instead of it hurting me, like it did the others, I
continued through the swing. I hit the ball far out of sight. I could
feel the power tingling in me, but saw some of the others on the ground,
including the teacher. I ran to get some help, and found I was running
way faster than normal. Not super fast, like that guy Quiksilver that I
learned about here, but still really fast. The problem was, since I had
never done that before, I didn't stop right, and slammed into a wall
really hard. It kind of hurt, but I knew I should be badly hurt, but I
wasn't. I guess they call that having some invulnerability. I got
help, and then just hoped that no one really saw it. But, they did.
Then, the stories and rumors started. I had been pretty popular before,
but now kids not only acted afraid, some of them still taunted me. My
parents freaked out, and took me to a hospital. But, all of the powers
had worn off after a little while. I was a normal girl again. Then, I
was approached by two people. One was named Emma Frost, who almost
convinced my parents to send me to her school. But, when the Professor
came, I knew somehow that I could trust him. He had Kitty with him, who
showed me her powers, and told me how they had helped her at their
school. I got my parents to send me there. I then found out about the
truth about Emma Frost and the Hellfire Club. And now, here I am. Dr.
McCoy has done some tests already, and found that not just electricity,
but other kinds of energy can bring out my powers. We haven't found an
upper limit yet, but then, we haven't gone too far, either. I hope you
can figure it out, and find a way that I can control it."
I thought about the emotion behind that plea. In one sense, it was a
plea for normalcy. That was something I would never know again. I
could pass for being normal, but had too much on my shoulders. But,
maybe I could help her. I told her, "What I think might work is feeding
you small amounts of energy, and I will focus on you. My powers should
be able to help you to stretch your powers beyond previous limits you
were willing to risk. But, I'll need time to set things up. We'll
start in the morning." I could tell this brightened her up, and she
left with a bounce in her step.
I spent the rest of the day working in the danger room on a program. It
would allow her to work out freely. As I was finishing, Logan showed
up. He said, "I was about to work out, kid. Wanna watch"? I said, "I
wouldn't last in your program, but if you are willing to go for some
kind of shooting program, I'll surprise the heck out of you." He
programmed the computer, and we went in. This time, the room looked
like a miniature town. A couple of blasters were waiting for us.
Suddenly, both alien and human villains started popping up, and we took
them down. I wasn't matching his skill, but my reflexes were
genetically created. I think he recognized some of the moves as well.
When we finished, he said, "You're good, kid. Better than most. I also
recognize some of the moves, but I don't remember from where yet. But
I'll get it soon." I told him, "I expect you to. If not, the time is
coming when I'll have to tell you. Right now, it would be a
distraction." We walked to the dining room and had dinner. I spent
some time getting aquianted with more of the students, and then went to
bed.
After breakfast in the morning, I met Kayli in the lab. Hank McCoy was
there, as was the Professor. I explained to them what I planned, and
then Hank and I gave her a full physical. We then went to the Danger
Room, and I inputted my program. She and I went in, while Hank and
Xavier went to the observation booth. I let Hank control the input of
energy. I observed her using her powers unassisted, and she had trouble
controlling both her speed and strength, but the invulnerability she
gained with them protected her. I had Hank power it down, and we all
relaxed while her powers wore off. Then, we went back in. This time, I
focused on her as the energy came up. She started the exercises again,
and I established a limited telepathic link with her. Her rhythm grew
better, and her strength increased as the energy went up. Her
invulnerability also grew, so that she didn't hurt herself while using
it. I told her, "One thing I sense is that you're getting cocky. You
need to guard against that. Otherwise, this is great. It wont be long
before we won't need the link- you'll be fine on your own." She said,
"That was such a rush! I'll try to go slow, like you said, but I want
to show everyone what I can do"! I said, "You can bring Kitty, and then
some of your other friends, to watch as we work out. Then you can work
out with them, and learn to be part of a team, and not hurt others in
the process."
We worked out for the next couple of days, and then we took a break, and
I took Kitty, Kayli, and Peter into the city. I allowed myself to be
dragged along on some shopping, and we went to a movie. Then, things
started to go bad fast. The attempt I knew was coming on my life came.
There were a couple of lesser supervillains that Peter and Kitty took
out, but Kayli and I found ourselves facing Nitro. He said, "I don't
know why they want you dead, and could really care less. You're dead."
I could tell he was getting ready to explode. It would easily kill me,
and scores of people on the crowded street we were on. Then, as he was
blowing up, Kayli jumped in front of me, and took the brunt of the
blast. But, due to her power, she didn't get too hurt, but absorbed the
force. I knew this would probably be beyond her limit, but didn't know
what to do. He had reformed, and was ready to explode again. He said,
"Let's see what an all out blast will do." As he went gaseous in
preparation to explode, she jumped into the gas. I yelled "No!", and
tried to grab her shoulder and pull her back. I felt a pain beyond
belief, and swore I could hear two people screaming, and then realized
it was Kayli and I. It felt as if my whole body was ripped apart, and
then came back together again. Then there was nothing.
I don't know how long it was, before I felt I was in some kind of
trance. I was somewhere drifting, where time and space didn't seem to
exist. I saw Kayli drifting, obviously unconcious or comatose. Then I
heard another voice and turned. It was Nitro. He said, "Where the Hell
are we, and what did you do to me"? I said, "I don't know either
answer, but we need to try to figure it out together." He said, "The
Hell with that. I'll kill you guys, and then work out the rest." He
tried to explode, but it didn't work. That's when I realized we were
somehow linked in some kind of common consciousness. I realized that
with my own skill. I might be able to drive him out. He saw quickly
what I was trying to do, so he fought back. It was an even battle, but
somehow I could feel Kayli helping. I have no idea where he went, but
he didn't go easy. I wondered if I would see him again.
Then, I heard voices. I could make out a little of what they were
saying. They couldn't figure out who I was. What the heck? That
didn't make sense. I finally struggled to consciousness, and saw Jean
Grey, Hank, and the Professor. I realized that I was strapped down to a
table. Jean said, who are you, and what happened to Dr. Lamb, and
Kayli? Where did they disappear to"? I had no idea what they were
talking about, but I was upset about being tied down. I struggled
against my bonds, and broke free with ridiculous ease. When Hank tried
to grab me, I threw him off, but I had no idea how strong I had become.
My body felt terribly off. I could feel Jean and the Professor try to
use their mental powers, but they seemed to have no effect. I
recognized where I was at- the isolation chamber in the lab. I wasn't
thinking- I just tried my strength, and easily ripped the door off. Now
I knew something was wrong. I ran out of the lab, but Xavier had
summoned the X- Men. Peter said to Kitty, "Who is she? There is
something familiar about her, but I know I've never seen her before."
Then, I started getting hit from all directions. They were having
little effect on me- mostly just pain. I managed to get some space from
them, and to a mirror. I had to see why they didn't recognize me.
Then, I knew. Looking back from the mirror was a beautiful young woman.
I had most of the features that my famous Dad, and his 5th cousin, my
Mom, had shared. Bronze skin, my Mom's muscle tone. But, I still had
my old brown hair and brown eyes that were put there, along with fair
skin, to protect my identity while I was growing up.
That's when the second wave of X- Men hit, led by Storm. But, her
elemental energy wasn't helping. But, if as I suspected, part of me was
Kayli, she should have increased my strength. Instead, it seemed as
though I had hit the limit. But, I wasn't going down without a fight.
Then a voice yelled, "Stop." We all turned around, and Logan stood
there. He was looking at me and shaking his head. He said, "Well I'll
be damned. I had just about figured out who you were. How you wound up
like this must be a hell of a story. But, you are the splitting image
of your Mom." I looked around, and said, "Finally, someone is ready to
listen! Logan, you better tell them, because they'll never believe it
from me." He smiled, and said, "No wonder I trusted you by instinct.
You're Dad was the third true superhero, after Tarzan and the Shadow,
and I knew them too. But, he and I fought in WWII together, along with
a man named Steve Rogers. You guys may know him better as Captain
America. I'm glad you remembered meeting me when you were little. That
was right before you guys disappeared in 1950. Don't think we didn't
look. We just finally all had to move on. But, now look at you.
You're going to have to explain this, and what happened to you, and
you're Mom and Dad." He looked at the others and said, "Don't worry
about her, folks. She is somehow a combination of David and Kayli. And
David, he's the son of one of the greatest friends I've ever had, Doc
Savage. May as well get comfortable. I have a feeling this will take a
while."
