Robin, please consider this memo to be my resignation from the Body
Exchange Institute, effective two weeks from today. I can no longer be
part of an organization I cannot ethically support. In all of our
promotional materials, we claim to be dedicated to the highest standards
of client care. That claim seems especially hollow now, as one of our
customers from five years ago now struggles for his life following a
second suicide attempt.
I will refer to the male, formerly female subject as subject A for
purposes of this memo. The male to female subject will be referred to as
subject B.
Subject B's adjustment has gone remarkably well, given the circumstances.
Prior to the transfer, she was a thirty-one year old male. She swapped her
healthy body for the body of a thirty-one year old female paraplegic who
had been shot twice by her former boyfriend. Both bullets struck the
patient's torso. The lower wound resulted in a complete injury to the
spinal cord, which was completely severed. The upper wound shattered
several bones in the spinal column resulting in compression and bruising
of the spinal cord. The outcome was what we term an incomplete injury to
the cord. The patient was left with diminished use of her arms and hands.
Subject B had identified as transgender since the age of four. She had not
considered sexual reassignment surgery due to the expense and the belief,
which I shared, that her large male frame and heavy facial features would
have made her ability to pass a female marginal at best. She had
registered with the national body swap exchange on her eighteenth
birthday, the youngest legal age she was able to do so.
Our limited pre-transfer counseling with Subject B revealed she had given
careful consideration to the implications of the procedure. She was not a
physically active person prior to the transfer, preferring movies,
television, reading and the company of friends. Her need for a body that
was in congruence with her mind was so strong that she was willing to
accept a body of limited functionality.
Her journey over these last five years has had its ups and downs. Through
a determined course of physical therapy, she had regained full use of her
hands. Not only is she functional in the activities of daily living, she
has taken up sewing, beading and jewelry-making--all hobbies that demand a
high degree of motor skill.
She has been involved in two long-term relationships since becoming
physically female. The first, with a fellow church member, lasted more
than a year. They even became engaged, but he broke off the engagement
after deciding he could not cope with the issues associated with a
handicapped partner. However, there is a happy ending to her story to
date--she married a member of her caregiving team two months ago. In an
email, she told me: "He's seen me at my best, and my worst, and he loves
me. That's good enough for me."
I predict continued good outcomes for subject B.
Subject A's life, to put it charitably, has been a disaster. She should
have never been approved for the procedure without long-term counseling--if
at all. Our meager pre-transfer counseling failed to identify a lifelong
fear and hatred of men. This issue did not begin with her two failed adult
relationships as a male. It goes back to a childhood dominated by an
emotionally distant and highly demanding father.
A's father never expressed affection to her, verbally or physically. Even
though she tested at a genius level IQ in elementary school and
consistently excelled in all class work, she always fell short in her
father's eyes. Subject A was an only child and it is my theory--not
substantiated by direct contact with the parents, who have long been
estranged from A--that he was deeply disappointed in having a daughter
instead of a son. I believe this colored her self-perception in ways that
ultimately become self-destructive and toxic.
The message of female inferiority was reinforced by law school professors
and senior partners at her law firm who treated her as a second-class
citizen solely because of her biological gender. It is astonishing that
such archaic prejudices persist as we approach the dawn of the twenty-
second century but it is a sad fact of human nature.
Subject A's wounding at the hands of her second long-term boyfriend, Tony,
was the apparent trigger for an emotional breakdown on her part. During
her period of convalescence, she became fixated on the idea of swapping
bodies with a healthy male. Because she had the money and we had the
technology, it happened.
In the initial weeks after the transfer, A's adjustment appeared to be
going well. He returned to full-time work as a lawyer and, freed from his
wheelchair, launched into a vigorous program of physical activity. He
became active socially, and somewhat surprisingly, began dating women on a
steady basis. As you know, Robin, most cross-gender swaps maintain the
same sexual orientation even after their move into a new body. In
retrospect, we should have seen this as an early warning sign.
Before the transfer, A had been a workaholic, even during the period of
her two failed relationships. Afterwards, for the first time in his career
(by his own later admission) he began cutting corners at work and doing as
little as possible to get by, relying on the work of support staff to a
degree that was not appropriate or ethical.
In place of work, A devoted increasing amounts of time to physical
activity and development--or over-development, if I am to be wholly
accurate. He began regular use of anabolic steroids, which surely
accelerated his erratic, violent and hyper-masculine behaviors. He took up
a variety of martial arts. He spent hours on the shooting range honing his
skills with both pistol and rifle. By this point he was clearly a ticking
time bomb, but there was no one in his life in a position to stop it.
His sexual partners reported a pattern of brief relationships and rough
sex, bordering on sadism on occasion. Then an unexpected thing happened.
For the third time in his life, and for the first time as a male, A fell
in love. She was a small, intense, well-endowed woman who displayed
hypersexual behaviors of her own. A's entire worldview had been developed
through the frame of men displaying dominating and cruel behaviors toward
women; this relationship, in a very cruel and direct way, provided A with
proof that females have the power to inflict emotional pain on men. After
several emotional breakups and reconciliations, A's lover fled to Las
Vegas one weekend and married her gardener.
This triggered A's first suicide attempt, which involved swallowing an
overdose of barbiturates. The nature of the act is troubling and puzzling.
As you probably know, Robin, the swallowing of pills is a typical behavior
of female suicides; males tend to choose firearms or other more violent
means.
After A's recovery, he resigned from his law firm and began a full-time
manhunt for Troy, the former boyfriend who had shot her while she was
female. The hunt by law enforcement had been fruitless, so A decided to
take matters into his own hands. His travels throughout this region of the
country led to a number of bar fights and other confrontations, but no
solid leads.
A was still on the road last week when he apparently became aware of the
effects of his prolonged steroid use, including atrophy of his testicles
and breast development. In perhaps the cruelest twist of fate I can
imagine, he was developing female sexual characteristics. Broke, alone,
and in deep despair, he attempted to shoot himself in the head, but, due
to a state of heavy intoxication, he inflicted a potentially-life
threatening wound to his neck and shoulder instead. You will note that he
chose the more typical male approach the second go-around.
When he is released from the hospital he will be transferred to a mental
institution. He will need prolonged therapy to address questions of sexual
orientation and gender identity that should have been dealt with long
before now. This is a tragedy that could have, and should have been
prevented. The blame rests squarely on our shoulders.
Gender isn't something that can be taken off and put on like a suit of
clothes. It is fundamental to an individual's core self-identity. We
ignore that truth at our peril.
