Chapter 1 - Introduction
Dave had been a cross dresser for more years than he cared to remember.
When he was young he had sneaked in to his mother's room and put her
shoes on. He would also take clothes out of the washing basket and hold
them up against his body wondering how they would look on him. It was
probably some time in his teens that he had first dressed fully. By
this time his mother's shoes fitted him and he would prance around in
her high heels and a dress. He always wished she had a wig but
unfortunately she did not so he had to live with the fact that he only
looked feminine from the neck down.
When he left home he managed to take some shoes and clothes to allow him
to continue his hobby. He also purchased a wig and some make up over
the internet and in the privacy of his bedsit he would transform himself
in to beautiful woman and spend nights just lounging around. He was not
brave enough to go out so all his hard work was only visible to him in
the mirror and a few less than impressive photographs he had taken with
the self timer.
Dave was on the way home from work one night when he saw the notice
outside the local amateur theatre:
WANTED: Men to play Dames in Christmas Panto
AUDITIONS: Thursday 20th Nov at 8pm
No need to attend in costume just come along and audition
This was his big chance. If he could land the part of a pantomime dame
then he would have a valid reason to dress in female clothing. The
theatre was also likely to have a large wardrobe so he would get to wear
lots of different outfits that would be hard to get any other way.
Dave knew what a pantomime dame was but it was a while since he had seen
a pantomime. So the rest of that week and the beginning of the next
were spent on research on the web to get a better understanding of what
was involved.
He found the following entry on the Wikipedia:
A pantomime dame is a traditional character in British pantomime. It is
a continuation of en travesti portrayal of female characters by male
actors in drag. They are played either in an extremely camp style, often
but not exclusively by actors well-known for their homosexuality or
effeminacy, or else by men acting 'butch' in women's clothing.
This did not really describe Dave as he had never had homosexual
tendencies even when he dressed in female clothing but he pushed this to
the back of his mind. The chance to dress every night for week and to
try on the various costumes in the theatre wardrobe was too good a
chance to miss.
Whilst he was researching information about the pantomime dame, Dave
also found information about the principle boy in a pantomime.
This was usually the role of the male hero of the story but it was
played by a very pretty young lady. This role had been more common in
the 1950's and today the principle boy was often played by a soap star
or other male celebrity.
Thursday came all too soon and Dave made his way from work to the
theatre. He was there about 7pm and wondered around for a while to see
if any other people were turning up for the auditions. For a while Dave
thought he may have got the wrong night as no one else was around but
about 7.40 the first people arrived and went in to the theatre through
the stage door.
Dave waited around outside, not sure if he should rush home and forget
the whole idea or if he should pluck up his courage and go in. About
7.45pm someone inside the theatre opened the front door and hung a sign
outside saying "Auditions tonight". This was when Dave realised the
people who entered by the stage door where probably the people running
the auditions.
A few minutes later one man entered the front door of the theatre
carrying a small holdall. Shortly another and then another man went in
through the front door. All these men looked quite normal and Dave was
wondering if they were also part of the audition team.
About 7.50 a couple of "ladies" walked down the street and strolled in
through the front door. The first "lady" had on a pair of red high
heels which made her rear sway as she walked along. She also wore a
bright red dress with white spots which Dave could see peeping out from
underneath her coat. She had blonde hair which was very big and made
her at least 3 inches taller than she was. This combined with he high
heels must have made her at least 6 ft tall. The second "lady" had on
black ankle boots with a two inch heel and her long legs were covered in
sheer black stockings with a seam down the back. She had dark hair
which was not a big as the first "lady" but it came done over the collar
of her coat at least 6 inches. Dave could not see her dress as it was
completely covered by the coat she was wearing. Dave thought these
might be a couple of couple of drag queens who had decided to ignore
notice about not needing to attend in costume.
Over the next few minutes another 3-4 people arrived and entered in
through the front door of the theatre. By this time Dave was a bag of
nerves. He had been having second thoughts about the whole thing during
the hour which he had spent waiting outside the theatre. His resolve
was just about to fail him when he saw a couple of people take a clothes
rack full of costumes out of a van and wheel this down to the theatre.
He thought to himself this is my one and only chance and he strode
across the road to the theatre entrance.
