One day in the not-too-distant future, a major breakthrough in genetic
research was announced from one of the world's leading laboratories. Five
volunteers, three men and two women, were turned into hermaphrodites,
fully functional in every way. The scientific team proved it by
encouraging all five volunteers to have sex with one another, and
succeeded in getting all five to give birth within two years. Detailed
lab tests proved that, in addition to being the mothers of the five
babies, each of the five subjects (whom the scientists called "Chris",
"Lee", "Pat", "Sam", and "Terry") was also the father of one of the new
babies, three boys named Bill, Fred, and Paul, and two girls named Judy
and Susan. Of course, none of the five children had the same mother and
father. Can you determine the name of each child's mother and father?
1.) The three subjects who were male before the experiments began were
Sam, Judy's father, and Paul's mother. Lee was female.
2.) Terry's daughter was the first of the five children to be born.
3.) The team of scientists did not want incest to be an issue, so they
warned Sam at the outset not to have sexual relations with his brother,
who is now Fred's mother. They complied.
4.) One of the five children has Lee as a mother and Chris as a father.
5.) Bill and Paul do not have any parents in common.
6.) Susan is the only child whose parents were the same gender before
volunteering for the experiment.
ANSWER:
By clue 1, Sam, Judy's father, and Paul's mother were the three subjects
who started out as men. Clue 3 tells us that Fred's mother was born a man
and isn't Sam, so Fred's mother must be Judy's father; let's refer to
that person as X. The third former man, who we'll call Y, must have been
Paul's mother.
Since there were three former men, one child's mother and father must
have both been men. By clue 6, this child must be Susan, so her mother
must be Sam. Susan's father, who was born male by clue 6 and can't also
be Sam, has to be Y. Also by clue 6, one of Bill's parents must have been
born a male. Since X's and Y's two children are both accounted for, Sam
must be Bill's father.
By the process of elimination, we know that Paul's and Fred's fathers,
and Judy's and Bill's mothers, are the two subjects who were born female.
Clue 5 tells us Bill and Paul have no parents in common, so Paul's father
and Bill's mother are different people. For simplicity's sake, let's call
Paul's father Z and Bill's mother W; by elimination, W must be Fred's
father, while Z is Judy's mother.
So far, we can say that Bill's father is Sam and his mother is W, Fred's
father is W and his mother is X, Judy's father is X and her mother is Z,
Paul's father is Z and his mother is Y, and Susan's father is Y and her
mother is Sam. All that remains is to identify W, X, Y, and Z. By clue 1,
Lee is one of the two former women (W and Z). Clue 4 also tells us she is
the mother of the same child Chris is the father of. Since W is the
mother of the same child whose father is Sam, Lee must be Z, so Chris is
X. Clue 2 tells us Terry has a daughter, so Terry can only be Y. This
leaves Pat to be W.
So, the solution is that Bill's father is Sam and his mother is Pat,
Fred's father is Pat and his mother is Chris, Judy's father is Chris and
her mother is Lee, Paul's father is Lee and his mother is Terry, and
Susan's father is Terry and her mother is Sam.
