Looking back, I still have to convince myself that it really happened. It
was August, a time of year that brings out the worst in me. I'm country
head of an international business and September is the month when, within

although I have to take my personal assistant with me into this market

I was still mulling this situation after a drive home and a beeline to the
fridge and the sanctuary of cold beer, when the phone rang. Charlie was
phoning to ask how my week was going. Looking back now I wonder what he
thinks about the timing of his call, and the fact that it would change

Charlie was a close friend who I'd met three years before through his then

"Why don't I work as your PA to see you through the planning period? I
have computer and research skills to knock spots of most PAs and I could
do with some employment now, to fill this gaping hole in my CV. What have
you got to lose, try it for tomorrow? If it's not working out you can
contact the temp agency to send a replacement over for Monday."
I couldn't immediately see a better solution so I replied, "See you at the
office at 9.00 then and we'll take it from there. Oh, and dress for the
part"
The next day, following my usual morning routine; get up, get dressed and
get out, usually in the same order, I made it to the office by 8.30 and
greeted the receptionist.
"Morning Tracey, a friend of mine, Charlie, will be in shortly to cover as
my PA."
As I walked passed her desk, I heard the response, "I know, she's here
already."
I was through reception by now and was about to stop, turn and raise an

planning. I'll call Peter Friend, our computer geek, and ask him to set
you up on the system with a temporary login. He can show you where to
find the appropriate account files. I need you to analyse the last year
of our client behaviour and report back this afternoon."
"Wonderful, I'll get right on it," was her far too easy response, as she

After calling Peter, I sat at my desk for a few minutes trying to make
sense of what was happening, before finally pulling myself together and
applying my brain to the job at hand.
The rest of the morning passed without incident, albeit with a little less
productivity than the situation demanded on my part. I had a lunchtime
meeting with a client and, as I made my way out of the office, I surprised
Peter Friend, arching over Charlie seated at the desk and explaining in
far too much detail some figures on the screen. For her part, Charlie did
not try to disguise her bored expression and did her best to ignore him
and scan through the pages.
An hour later, I returned but there was no sign of Charlie. With a full
