The lord chuckled politely, despite the shrill pitch of the lady's
shriek. He quietly noted that while the old captain was certainly full
of talk and self-absorbed pride, the lady was quite... vapid. After a
while of calling, a young girl hurried up through the crowd of
partygoers. She was no more than 13 or 14 winters, with her dirty blonde
hair arranged in some crude braids and wearing a servant's dress. She

disregarding our host's personal guards inside the manor" (and it was
obvious from his tone that the captain did) "I have men stationed all
around the grounds and the outer wall. Nobody comes or goes tonight
except with our gracious lord's permission." He raised his glass in
salute.
"My thanks, captain. I do feel much more secure in the knowledge that
Luskan's finest are watching out for me and my collection." Ravenshield
smiled, and took a sip in response.
While the two men chatted, the servant girl had hurried off, blushing at
being reprimanded by her tipsy mistress. Soon she was back, however,
with a very stern-looking woman in tow. She was somewhere in her
thirties, Ravenshield guessed, though given the faintly pointed ears
that poked out under her severely tied black hair she was a half-elf,
and thus could be much older. She wore a suit of dark, practical leather
armor, albeit brightened up with a tabard bearing the Trask family
insignia. Due to constant quarrels with the other nobles Ravenshield had
allowed each guest to bring a single armed bodyguard, and thus the half-
elf carried a sword on her belt and daggers sheathed here and there on
her armor. Instead of the fawning curtsey of the servant girl, the
bodyguard merely bowed briefly to her employer.
"You wished to speak with me lady Trask?" she said in a clipped tone.
"Yes. Yes I did Trina. Where have you been? I haven't seen you since
right... right after the tour ended" Lady Trask slurred.
Lord Ravenshield smiled to himself as he took another sip from his
glass. The lady was trying to pretend that she hadn't been
wholeheartedly with captain Oak's rant against non-humans just a few
minutes ago, while the captain himself had puffed himself up behind his
polished breastplate and was pointedly trying not to look at the half-
elven bodyguard or even acknowledge her presence.
"I was guarding you. Isn't that why you hired me?" Trina responded.
"Well... yes. But that means you have to keep me in sight! What if some
assch... assassass..."
"Assassin," Ravenshield interjected.
"What if some assassin had struck while you were off?" the lady
finished.
"Just because you did not see me doesn't mean I didn't see you, milady,"
Trina said, matter-of-factly. "I am doing the job I came here to do,
don't worry."
"Fine. Fine. Just... make sure you keep doing it, alright?" Lady Trask
sighed as she waved dismissively.
The bodyguard and servant girl merged back into the crowd, and lord
Ravenshield noted even his trained falconer's eyes couldn't pick the
half-elf out in the crowd after she vanished. A very efficient "shadow"
he mused to himself. He also found himself wondering how the bodyguard
was in bed, but also knew he rarely dared to risk laying with a
commoner, even a pretty one. With a resigned sigh he turned back to
captain Oak, who had started on another rant.
"...and besides that, who will hire a good, reliable human guard when
there's a dwarf there, saying he'll do the same job for less pay because

Ravenshield found his thoughts drift off again. He thought of the great

about the stern, taciturn half-elf bodyguard. He thought of his wife,

The lord shuddered at the shrill shriek, and turned to captain Oak as
the servant girl hurried up to obediently listen to the instructions of

"You must pardon us, captain. I have to take the lady outside... she's
not feeling well." He made a quiet motion of drinking to the old
soldier, who grinned and winked.
"Very good m'boy. She needs some fresh air, I bet."
Soon Ravenshield was leading the lady out of the ballroom, leaving the
other guests to gossip and whisper behind their back.

the whims and welfare of her highness. So go on. Go out there. Grab some

"I... alright, miss. What about you?" Aya said insecurely.
"I'm going to go get some air. I've been cooped up in here for too long.
And this manor is very... interesting."
Aya nodded, and turned to vanish into the crowd, presumably on a firm
course for the buffet table. Trina grinned wryly as the girl vanished,
throwing the remains of the apple into a corner and exiting the
ballroom. Her employer had turned out to be quite a handful, but she had
her uses, the half-elf had to admit. And she was going to make the
