been traveling and taking odd jobs at various towns and when he had the

should give you a little clue of what I did."
They left and that was the most he spoke in one time in months and than
a cute little waitress came and brought a menu.
He looked at her and said, "Can you give me a couple of minutes?"
She said, "Sure and I couldn't help but to overhear that you fought in
Vietnam now the local VFW would be more than happy to help you anyway
they can."
He says, "Thanks but all I need help with is finding odd jobs. I can
hammer paint whatever needs done."
She said, "There is a farmer outside of town and he doesn't judge by
your appearance just whether or not you are willing to work. There is
some painting that needs to be done. He doesn't pay much but he offers
room and board if you are interested."
He said, "Sounds good. I have decided on my order I want a
cheeseburger, fries and a coke."
She said, "It is good and the hamburger and fries will cover the plate
and at $1.50 it is fairly reasonable."
He waited for his order and 15 minutes later it came out piping hot and
she put down the coke fries and hamburger and underneath the plate he
saw a yellow sheet of paper.
When he looked at it he chuckled there was the map to the farmer's
house and he put it in his jacket pocket.
He ate his lunch and he found it quiet filling and he gave the waitress
a dollar tip. He walked up and she was at the cash register and she
rang up the sale and he gave her 2 dollars and she gave him the change
and he walked out.
Just as he was about to start his Harley she came running out and said,
"This is too much sir."
He said, "I don't think it is because you helped me so much."
She wrote down on a piece of paper her phone number and address.
She said, "I know you aren't planning to be here for long but if you
think you need companionship look me up."
As he backed his bike up she waved goodbye to him and he waved goodbye
back. Once he got the bike going the direction he wanted to go he kick
started it and the Shovelhead engine roared to life. He reached for the
shifter and put it in gear and he got on the road to the direction of
the farm and he rode for a mile and turned on the gravel road and he
rode up to the farm he saw an older gentleman coming out of his house
in faded jeans and a long sleeve shirt that was rolled up past his
elbow and was wearing work boots and a feed silo cap.
He said, "Hi my name is Jake and I understand you have some work to be
done."
As the farmer reached out and started to shake his hand he said, "You
are inactive Marine aren't you."
Jake said, "Yeah how did you know?"
The man smiled and said, " Pacific Theater from 42 to 45 and damn were
those Japs fighters. After that you know all you have to do is look in
their eyes and you will see if they have the gaze."
After they shook hands the farmer said, " My name is Josh and your
hands are no stranger to work. Your quarters are small has a small
ancient refrigerator and a small stove and no TV but has a radio."
Jake said, "There ain't really anything worth watching from what I
see."
Josh laughed and said, " Looks like we will get along fine. By the way
where was your tour?"
Jake said, "Da Nang."
Josh said, "I heard that was hairy."
Jake said, "It wasn't boring."
Josh said, "I never understood Viet Nam not like the war I was in or
even Korea but Viet Nam I believe was the war for the boys on the Hill
to experiment with the new toys."
Jake said, " I had just as a difficult time of figuring it out and I
did 4 tours."
Josh laughed and said, "You had to do 4 because you thought you might
understand it?"
Jake said, "Yeah something like that."
Only 2 veterans could laugh about something like that because they both
knew why Jake did 4 tours and that was for the other platoon members.
He cared about the other men.
Josh said, "There is enough work to keep you here all summer there is
fence to mend and the barn needs painting. I am talking about 150 acres
of fencing that needs repairs."
They walked over to Jake's Harley and Josh looked and whistled and
said, "That is a Shovelhead isn't it?"
Jake said, "Yeah you know your bikes."
Josh said, "I have something to show you."
They walked to the barn and Jake could see the peeling paint and they
walked towards the back corner and he saw a tarp threw over something.
Josh threw off the tarp and there stood a 1940 Harley Davidson.
Jay whistled and said, "That is a knucklehead."
Josh laughed and said, "You know your bikes. Yeah, I picked this bike
up for next to nothing at an Army Navy surplus . I had to rebuild the
motor but that was fine and I still ride it when I don't have to drive
any of the trucks or the tractor."
Jake said, "You are full of surprises."
Josh said, "I tell you what we can take a long ride together some
weekend. I bet you got harassed by the town character who has a wife
named Mildred."
Jake said, "How did you know?"
Josh laughed and said, "Because I know that miserable son of a bitch
his name is Tom Bateman. Every time that old coot sees me riding my
Harley he tells me I need to act my age. We are the same age but I
still believe in having fun in life and by golly I do. Never give up
doing what you love doing. You know you don't have a choice of getting
older but you do have a choice of getting old, never get old. Let me
tell you a secret he has been 4 F so he doesn't know what we know and
he probably didn't see past your hair and beard."
Jake said, "Nope."
Josh laughed and said, "That is just hair on your head and on your
face."
Jake shook his head he couldn't believe this farmer but he looked at
things than just through common sense.
Josh said, "Oh I almost forgot you can put your bike beside mine that
is one nice Harley."
He rode his bike into the barn and shut it off and pushed beside Josh's
bike.
He walked out of the barn and there was Josh and he was smiling.
He said, "The fact that you put the burr under Tom's saddle makes you
just that much better of a man. Now you are going to need some good
workshirts and I think I have some that will fit my son was about the
same size as you when he went to Vietnam."
Jake asked, " Where is your son at?"
Josh said, "At the VA hospital he came down with a real bad case of
pneumonia now I don't know he got it but he did,"
Jake asked, "Are you sure it isn't from that spray to kill the
vegetation?"
Josh said." I asked my son if he was ever near it and he told me no."
Josh pulled out his pocket watch and saw it was 5 p.m. he said, "We can
either eat here or go back to town and jab that old Tom in his side.
What the hell why don't we get our bikes out and really give Tom
something to bitch about."
They went out to the barn and Josh took his bike and started it up and
he yelled nothing like the sound of a Harley. Jake started up his and
rode with Josh to town and Josh was having the time of his life and
Jake was pretty impressed. They got to the caf? and parked their bikes
and walked into the caf?.
Josh said, "Now that was fun."
They walked to the window booth and sat down.
The waitress came up and Josh said, "Katy I am surprised you are still
working."
Katy said, "Well, one of the girls called in sick and you know how that
goes but I will be working for about 2 more hours."
Katy looked at Jake and said, "So will you call on me sometime?"
Jake blushed and said, "Sure."
Josh said, "Why don't you get Jake and me that chicken fried steak
dinner."
She said, "Will do."
After she left Josh laughed and said, "You come into town and make a
hell of an impression. You have already got the girl that every boy in
town wants."
Next thing Tom and Mildred come in and he shoots Jake and Josh a dirty
look.
Tom said, "I see you rode that motorcycle of yours like some daredevil.
You know there is nothing wrong with acting your age. I think you are
in the middle of what they call a mid-life crisis."
Josh said, "Tom I don't mind getting older I just refuse to get old
like you. I maybe 65 years old Tom but I am still going to have fun in
life. As for that Harley I got that bike after I came home from the
war."
Tom said, "I see you have that long haired guy with you."
Josh said, "Oh you mean this long haired inactive Marine."
Tom asked, "How can you tell?"
Josh said, "If you were actually a Marine you would know."
Tom Hmmphed and grumbled under his breath and he and Mildred left them
alone.
Josh busted a gut laughing and Jake said, "Wow that is a little bit
below the belt."
Jake said, "Tom deserved it."
Josh said, "Why because he was 4F from the military?"
Jake said, "Of course not because of his attitude if he wasn't such a
miserable son of a bitch he was that way since I came home."
Josh said, "Was he jealous of your wife?"
Jake said, "He shouldn't have been Mildred and my wife Margret were
both lookers. Mildred is still a looker. That girl may have some snow
on top and she may wear those glasses but she still looks good."
Josh asked, "So how did you treat him after you got back?"
Jake said." I tried to treat him well tried being friends with him.
Look he had polio
when he was 15 and he still has use of his legs but he has a bad enough
limp to keep him out of the military."
Jake asked, "So what happened to your wife?"
Josh said, "She died of a heart attack 3 years ago."
Jake said, "I am sorry."
Josh said, "Ah don't be we had a good 40 years together and I am over
the worst of it."
Jake asked, "What did she think of that bike of yours?"
Josh said, "I used to have a sissy seat on it because she would ride
with me."
Jake said, "Sounded like to me you had quiet a marriage."
Josh said, "As good as Tom has with Mildred."
They ate their dinner and Jake couldn't believe what good fortunes he
was having and
couldn't believe Josh.
They enjoyed their dinner and as they were getting up Jake was about to
pay Josh motioned no he got it.
Jake said, "I know how tough it can be to live on odd jobs and
basically going from place to place and besides paying to irritate ole
Tom is well worth it."
They got on their bikes and backed them out and got them in the
direction they wanted to go and headed down the road.
They rode for 15 minutes back to the farm and they rode their bikes to
the barn and Josh found another tarp for Jake's bike and they covered
them both.
Josh closed the barn and he and Jake went to the front porch.
As Josh and Jake were sitting in the porch swings Jake said, "I notice
you ain't got no rockers."
Josh said, "Yeah. rockers you tend to sit and rot these swings for me
not so much. I like the type of furnishings that motivate me to stay
active."
Jake said, "So where have you ridden that Harley recently?"
Josh laughed and said, "Last year I rode to Sturgis. Not only that I
along with the Hell's Angels."
Jake looked incredulously at him and said, "Really?"
Josh said, "Yeah basically because one of the Bishops was with them.
Never became a patched member hell I would have had to go to California
and didn't feel like doing that I just had the pleasure to ride with
them."
Jake said, "That is a hell of an honor."
Josh said, "The only reason I tell you this is to tell you don't let
the world tell you to act your age. Especially when they are telling
you to behave and get old when you are my age. Don't stop doing things
you love just because the world is telling you that men at your aren't
doing it. My wife always reminded me that she said life is too short to
allow yourself to get old."
Josh went in and came back out and gave him a beer and sat down in the
porch swing.
Jake took a swig and said, "That is good how did you know?"
Josh said, "You are a Marine and I don't know a Marine who doesn't like
a beer. So what do you think of your living arrangements?"
Jake said, "I have no complaints."
Josh laughed and said, " There again spoken like a true Marine."
Jake said, "That came from spending the last 6 months in a rice paddy
during monsoon season."
Josh said, "I experienced one of those in Guadalcanal. I don't think I
felt dry for the first year back home after the war. Well that place is
small but no rain will ever leak inside."
Jake and Josh toasted their cans of beer together after that last
statement.
At 10:00 they finished up their beers and Jake finished up his beer and
got up.
He said, "I better go to bed if I am going to be worth a shit
tomorrow."
Josh said, "You are probably right and I won't be either. And oh I will
be paying you $1.60 an hour."
Jake said, "With room and board hell I will be a rich man in a couple
of months."
Josh said, "Well, I do like your attitude and I think we will get
along."
Jake said, "Goodnight I will see you before sunup."
Josh said, "Goodnight."
Jake walked tiredly back to his bunkhouse and went inside. He stripped
off his clothes and when he was in his Navy boxers Josh stuck his head
in the door.
He said, "Hey I see you still have your Navy underwear. Listen, we can
go to town at the end of the week and get you some groceries because I
know it might be a little difficult to get groceries on the back of
your bike."
Jake said, "Yes, you are right and yes thank you."
Josh said, "See you in the morning and you and I can eat at my place in
the morning."
Josh walked out and Jake just shook his head and went to bed and
quickly fell asleep."
