John and I awoke later that morning. I asked him how he was going to take
care of the Martin issue.
"Since we are off today, I have some ideas on that, Heather. I will let
you know what they are, once I am more clear," John said. He kissed me and
went to take a shower. I laid in bed, and fell back asleep, worrying about
what those ideas might be. After I took a shower and got dressed in my
jeans, a cream silk blouse, a pair of suede moccasins, put on some light
make-up and brushed my recently cut hair (now very layered and shoulder
length, for the warmer weather), I went to eat a bagel and John was coming
out of our home office carrying his iPhone. He said, "Good afternoon,
beautiful!" and gave me a nice hug and a kiss. "I really love your new
hair style, Heather. It makes you look like you are 17," John said, and we
laughed. It was a very cute look, I agreed.
John said he had called Martin, and asked if he could visit with him at
Martin's hotel room. John told Martin he wanted to spend some time with
him, since Martin was going back to San Francisco the next day. He didn't
let on to Martin that anything was wrong.
John went on to ask me if I would go with him, saying that he had an idea.
"God, that will be awkward!" I said, but I trusted my husband.
About an hour later, we drove to Martin's hotel downtown and John said,
"Heather, please just follow my lead, okay?"
I nervously said, "Okay, but I am really nervous, John."
He hugged me and we rode the elevator to Martin's floor. John said he
wanted me to wait until he came back for me, and asked me to sit in one of
the chairs near the elevator. I thought that was a little strange, but I
agreed, and sat cross-legged in a chair, and nervously surfed the Internet
with my iPhone to occupy the time. John walked down the hall and knocked
on Martin's door. The door opened, I heard Martin and John greet one
another, and once John went in, the door closed. I was really nervous and
worried about John's plan. I kept glancing toward Martin's door.
About 20 minutes later, I heard it open and saw it close as John walked
down the hall toward me. "Heather, this will be okay, I promise," he said
quietly. We went to Martin's door, and went in, John going ahead of me. I
saw Martin on the balcony that overlooked the atrium, but his back was
facing us. "Hey Martin, you can come back in, I have that surprise I told
you about!" John said. Martin came in smiling, until he saw me next to
John, and then he just froze and looked terrified.
"Since you have a thing for my wife and really want to spend time with
her, here she is," John said. I was trembling, but I trusted John.
Martin didn't say a word, and moved back towards the window. He looked
absolutely terrified.
"Come on, Martin, I brought Heather here just for you. For you and for me
to understand why you are stalking my wife! Speak up, let us know," John
said.
Martin tried to say something, but he was stammering over his words and
shaking in fear. John is a lot bigger than Martin, and I'm sure Martin
thought I was along to witness John beating him to a pulp. "Come on,
Martin!" John said. "Tell me what you want to do with my beautiful wife.
Since we're such good friends and everything." John was focused, and I'm
sure he was very angry, but he hates violence.
Martin looked down, shaking terribly and said, "I'm sorry...John...I
don't...I didn't...oh, God!" I noticed tears in Martin's eyes. "I mean,
I've really fucked up. I...let me...I 'm sorry, I can explain this to..."
Martin rambled, glancing away from John at me, looking desperate. He was
really scared.
At that point I stepped between John and Martin and said, "Wait a minute.
Let me say something, okay? John, come over here next to me. I held John's
hand, and put my other hand on Martin's left shoulder. I couldn't stand
seeing anyone, even Martin, being so upset. He was holding his head in his
hands and John was totally still, just looking at him, frowning.
"I don't think it has to be like this, guys. Surely, we can all sit down
and collect ourselves for a minute, right?" I said, glancing at John who
said quietly "You are right, Heather" John sat at the end of the couch and
I helped Martin sit down at the other end, sitting in between them.
"Please, let's just all calm down, okay? John looked at Martin who was
really crying, and trying to look at John and say something. I put my arm
around Martin, while holding John's hand and said, "It will be okay,
Martin. I looked at John, whom I could was was crying a little, himself
"Martin, take your time, okay? He was still sobbing, so I gently took his
hand in mine. I sat there in between these two friends, the irony of which
was not lost on me. After about fifteen minutes of emotional recovery,
John said, "Marty, I'm very sorry. What I did was really shitty" Now, I
was crying, but I said, "Martin, are you okay to enough to say what you
were trying to say, earlier?"still holding both of their hands.
Martin wiped his eyes and said that he felt terribly for what he had done
to me and to John. He tried to look equally at both of us, and John and I
listened calmly, as he talked.
Martin went on to say that he realizes he had now lost both of us as
friends, and that he deserved it. I wanted to interject and say he hadn't
lost our friendship, but Martin continued. He said that did have a crush
on me, which he knew was wrong. He said his girlfriend of two years had
recently left him for another man. "Ann's leaving me nearly killed me. I
tried overdosing on pills, but it didn't work. I ended up in the hospital
and now I am seeing a psychiatrist. I got the invitation to your wedding
during all of this. When I saw Heather's picture, I thought, wow, I'm so
jealous. But I couldn't stop looking at your picture, Heather. In my
state, I thought, this girl would make me feel better. I felt awful,
because you were my friend, John, but I couldn't help my feelings. That's
why I didn't come to the wedding. But then I thought maybe if I visited
and somehow got to know Heather, she might help me, somehow. I was not
thinking clearly at all, and I can see that I haven't until right now. I
have been terribly selfish and destructive, and I am so sorry I have hurt
both of you. I know there's no way I can repair this, so I will have to
accept that I will never see either of you again, and that is what I
deserve."
Martin fell silent, staring at the floor. John looked sad, and didn't seem
to be able to say anything. Finally, I said, "Martin, I forgive you. And
you won't lose me as a friend." After a minute or so, John said, "Marty, I
am sorry about Ann. You know I've been through that myself. I forgive you,
and you are still my friend. I understand your crush on Heather and that
you are in pain. I think we can all move beyond this. I'm not happy that
you propositioned my wife, but all of us have made mistakes."
I squeezed John's hand, and said, "Martin, do you have time to have
breakfast with us tomorrow, before your flight?"
Martin was in tears, but he said he would like that very much. He got up
and shook John's hand and quietly said, "Thank you, Johnny." He nervously
looked at me, and I took his hand and said, "It will be okay. We'll leave
now, and let you get some rest. We need some rest, too" John and I got up,
said goodbye and left, both of us completely exhausted.
John and drove him in silence, holding hands. We were both just too
drained to talk. We got into our bed and quickly fell asleep.
