Normally I would have approached an intruder on my land like the clich?
of a farmer shouting something like "Oi, get off my land!" but that did
not seem appropriate here.
I was looking at a lady.
A lady like this could not be an intruder, could she?
She had long straight jet black hair with black orchids in it. The
orchids held down a long black transparent veil which went down to her
shoulders but which did not at all cover her face.
It was a pale white face as was her neck but you were drawn to her blood
red lips.
Those lips begged to be kissed without her even moving them.
And her eyes said, "Come closer."
She was wearing a long black cape over a Zarifa dress. She had long
black satin Lycra gloves which ran down from her cape to a triangle tip
on her pale white hands. As she got closer I saw there was a loop
around the point of the triangle which went around her middle fingers.
Each finger had long stiletto blood red nails which on any hand other
than this beautiful lady's would have looked like claws.
The dress moved backwards and forward as she moved towards me without
appearing to touch the ground. She must have been touching the ground
but she appeared to float or glide towards me.
The dress was wide at the bottom but you could see her waist was
actually quite slim.
She had a choker round her neck with a bat centrepiece.
"Come, gatekeeper, come closer," she said softly. "Will you share the
darkness with me?"
Her whole bearing was regal.
I bowed and knelt before her in the wet grass.
"Stand to attention gatekeeper," she said and as I stood she was next to
me on my left hand side like a Queen inspecting her soldiers.
She clicked her fingers and the lights in my house went out.
"Who are you?" I asked.
"Don't you know me?" she countered and I knew, somehow that I did. "I
am the Queen of the Shadows and you are the gatekeeper."
I thought I had another name before that but suddenly that other name
was lost and I knew then that my gate was the only gate in the row of
fences between the park and the housing estate where I lived. It was
strange how I had never thought of that fact before, but right then I
knew that I had always known this. I knew I was the gatekeeper. I knew
my role had been to warn the town of danger and to control who went in
and out of the gate.
I had been appointed this role.
I had stopped her kind before but I was no match for her. Right then I
knew terror.
The Queen of the Shadows had to come through the gate as previously
there had been a wall round the town where the fences now stood.
Though the wall had long since vanished there was an old magic which
still remained and was the only power that resisted the strongest of the
ancients like her. She must still respect the old boundaries.
"Now present yourself to me," she commanded. It was time to surrender
to the one I feared.
My arms fell hopelessly to my sides and my head tilted down to my right
shoulder offering the left side of my neck to her and the night sky. My
hair grew out rapidly until I could feel it down my suddenly exposed
neck and shoulder blades. I felt something like a crown press a down on
my head as a black veil flowed down over my face and I felt her teeth
sink into my neck. Her teeth held me upright as my clothes flowed down
my body to be replaced by a medieval corset dress.
My chest grew out rapidly filling the dress as my stomach was sucked in
and I felt my groin suck in. I now wore gloves like hers. But I had
these long bell sleeves that hung down from my wrists.
I looked up into her eyes as the blood she had drawn from my neck drew
back from her chin like the tide going out when you looked at the sea.
I could feel fangs growing down from my top jaw. I knew then that I had
been transformed. I was now one of my Queen's handmaidens.
"You are one of my own now, gatekeeper. You will do as I command."
I nodded and curtsied and stepped behind her turning to face the town I
had previously, as a man, protected. But I was a man no more. The town
lay before us.
