Anyone watching our front door would have seen two women leave the house
in yoga pants and crop tops. They may have recognised Rita but not me,
Bea. I would have looked to them like Rita' s sister.
Of course no one was watching.
As Beau I would probably have done my best to cover up my ponytail and
what I was wearing terrified that someone would recognise me and ask me
what I was doing dressed like a woman.
But I was Bea now, the bringer of joy.
I was almost disappointed that nobody was watching. I was confident,
loud and assertive. If anything I felt overdressed in yoga pants and a

When we got to the studio, the reception was quite busy and we met
Nasrullah. I had expected to see her in her playboy bunny costume but
instead she was wearing a burqa.
How did I know it was Nasrullah?
She was wearing a name tag.
"Morning Nas, this is my sister Bea," Rita said.
"Wait, you're the Nasrullah in the playboy bunny costume?" I asked.
"Bea, I am a Muslim woman now."
"You mean, you weren't a Muslim woman before?"
"I was neither."
"What?" I replied, astonished to find someone else who was born male
but had now become female so quickly after becoming female myself.
"Yeah, look," Nas said showing me some pictures of another woman dressed
as a playboy bunny. "Ths is Steve in his playboy bunny costume. He was
the man groping me in the picture on the website but she's called Sumera
now. It means Princess. She's had a few men grope her now as she
didn't seem to mind being dressed as a playboy bunny as much as most ex
men do. It's a sort of hazing ritual here at the studio. You might
understand now why our motto is 'If you want to change your man bring
him to Pilates'?"
Rita suppressed a giggle.
I blushed.
"New boyfriend?" Nasrullah asked.
Rita nodded and I quickly did too. I wondered then whether Nasrullah
had worked out I was a man or whether she thought I had a new boyfriend
and was blushing for that reason.
"Well you keep him as a man for a while Bea, and see how that works for
you. We only ask that if you bring him here and you change him that you
both wear burqas and convert to Islam. It's about submission you see.
It helped me to understand who I am. I am happier now as a woman than I
ever was as a man. We only ask, mind, there's no compulsion in Islam."
I knew what she meant I felt much closer to Rita now. We were dressed
the same and doing everything together.
Rita told me she wanted to talk with Nas and to go through with our bags
to the changing room. For a second I nearly went to the men's changing
room but a bit like driving in France I quickly corrected myself and
went through the door I had not been through since I was a little boy
into the women's changing room.
A number of the Women were removing burqas and hijabs. They were
amongst women now and no head coverings were needed. I wondered what it
would be like to dress like that.
I did not feel as much like an intruder in the women's changing room as
I did as a little boy and I think only stared briefly at one of the
women who had the sort of body other women would kill for. I learnt
that she is a Pilates instructor in another studio. Otherwise I had an
attitude of I am among my fellow women getting changed, it's not like I
have not seen another woman naked before.
I put our valuables into a locker and left our bags on a bench before
going back out to reception to see what Rita and Nas were doing.
"You never told me you were like me," Nas scolded.
"But I'm not a Muslim," I replied.
"Nobody's perfect, inshallah!" Nas replied. "No, silly, I can see that!
I had no idea that like me you were born Male. Rita did a brilliant
job, it's very hard to spot you were assigned male at birth. I know a
number of young Muslim men I could set you up with, who are interested
in pre-op transexuals like us. Of course if anything developed between
you, you might want to consider wearing a hijab or burqa."
"Thanks but I am not sure I want either to have the op or to start
dating men. I am in a committed relationship," I said looking at Rita
for support.
Rita looked puzzled for a moment before saying, "Yes, Nas, Bea's a
lesbian."
The class was a lot harder than I imagined and I had to sit out about
half of it. I had no idea how fit most of these women were.
After class Rita whispered to me angrily "Thanks for the declaration of
passion! What's with the 'not sure'? Do you mean you might start
dating men or consider gender reassignment? And it sounds like you are
giving serious thought to becoming Muslim as you neither ruled out
wearing a hijab or burqa nor said you were 'not sure' about it!"
"Rita, sweetie, Bea's your girl!" I said, sounding like a mother
comforting a crying child. "I just didn't want to upset or offend Nas.
I have no intention yet of having an op, no intention at all of dating
men and I would only consider converting to Islam if you did, although I
do wonder what it would be like to wander round wearing all that on your
head. Don't they get hot?"
Rita smiled. "Good!" she said. "Because I love you, Bea and I could
not share you with another."
