They say we are living in a future. Flying cars, AI, star travel. Maybe
it is a future, but poverty and inequality still persist. Your life
still very much depends on where you were born, your get access to
proper education, or if you were forced to work very early in life.
I was born in 2077, in Northern Confederation, previously known as
Russia. Throughout my childhood I was poor as a begging robot. My life
was anything but easy. Only once during my childhood did I eat in a real
restaurant. That experience makes me dream about having my own
restaurant. I was learning to be a cook. I was working as a cook in the
army, I was working in a fast-food chain, slowly progressing to become a
manger. Now, 25 years later I managed to open my own small restaurant.
People can adapt almost to anything. When the new medicine was
introduced a lot of old hate powered ideologies collapsed, a lot of
people predicted that the golden era of humanity is coming. But people
can adapt to almost anything, and soon there were new ideologies that
was teaching that it is OK to kill some people, it is good and natural.
You don't have to hate someone to pull the trigger.
So was Bruce. He is smiling politely, but he will not hesitate to kill
me if I will refuse to join the sect or sell the restaurant for a
fraction of the real price. I don't want to be brain-washed and I don't
want to sell so low. Going to the police isn't an option - many of them
are members of the sect.
I am supposed to give an answer tomorrow. I am wide awake, unable to
fall asleep, when I remember having an old-style computer that can

"You don't understand. Your Bruce maybe a small guy, but there is a
powerful religious sect behind him, it would be a suicide to cross
them."
"What should I do then? Give them my life's work for free?"
There was a long pause before dealer typed his last answer and
disconnected.
"You know how we get so many tough guys to hire? They all are star fleet
veterans. They got strength and speed, night vision, and all the
enhancements that makes them really tough. Sell your restaurant to
another sect, and join the star fleet. When you will be back you will be
tough as well."
I pondered dealer's words. What he wrote makes sense. I wasn't following
the news too closely, I was always too busy with running my restaurant,
but I knew that there was a big war with aliens. Humans started winning
somewhere after 2078 when a colonist ship found a damaged alien ship.
The aliens' technology was used to make soldiers smarter, quicker and
stronger. There was a good chance of dying, but if you survive the first
few years in space you get a good pension and a strong body as a bonus.
I found contact information for the Holy Space sect; the second biggest
religion in our city, and in a bitter competition to Five Stars, and
offered them my restaurant. I poured a full glass of whisky and touched

Morning has come, and I already have an offer on my communicator. Holy
Space is offering me more than double what Five Stars offered. Still not
enough to cover even half of what I invested in the restaurant.
I hesitate. If I press Accept, my life will never be the same. The dream
of my life is going down the drain. But what choice do I have? Get even
less from Five Stars? I press Accept and sign the transaction.
It is noon, and I'm standing in front of the star fleet recruiting
center. I don't know much about them. I heard that in the beginning
there were a lot of volunteers, but people became tired of the war, not
so many volunteer now. But what if they are looking only for younger
people? Or taller people? Then I will be in trouble! Five Stars sect is
powerful, deep space is the only way to hide from them. But the smiling

When all the examinations, testing, and paper work is complete we get

our boarding passes for tomorrows flight to the moon base and were
