New Girl in School Part 6: Chloe meets the (God)Father
It was the most pristine if serendipitous sight for at the school, for
in the central courtyard, stood a massive ash tree. And at its foot, in
midst of the crisp autumn leaves, laid a couple-Joey the meek but lanky
fellow, sitting besides his new girlfriend Chloe as they indulged in a
nice lunch outside, despite being it being early October. Sure they had
gone on enough dates that for intents and purposes they might as well be
a couple and the rumor mill had gotten so thick with mutterings about
them that they might as well as be one.
Joey himself wore plain clothes so didn't stand out much. He glanced
over at Chloe, who was leaning up against him. Man, what a lucky guy I
am, he thought, as he looked her over. Chloe was a wearing a long
flowing green dress with a light denim jacket covering part of her
chest. Her hair was pulled into a nice side-tail and she was wearing
quite understated makeup. She doesn't need it though, Joey pondered,
she's a natural beauty. He glanced down, spotting some stockings on her
legs peeking from underneath her dress, with her feet encased in high
heels. He smiled as he watched her munch on her salad lunch, then she
turned over to him, beaming that white crisp smile of hers. His heart
was set aflutter for a moment there.
"Something wrong, mon cheri?" she asked sweetly, with a hint of concern
in her voice as she saw him, for a moment, gazed out towards the
courtyard. Joey nodded in response. "Oh it's nothing," Joey replied
back, offering a slight grin to her followed by a soft sweep of his free
hand against her warm cheek, which she accepted gladly. She then put
down her fork into the salad bowl she had in her lap, then posed
casually. "So, when am I going to meet your dad?" Ah that, Joey
realized, the thing that she has been wondering about for the past few
times we have met up together. Sighing heavily, Joey replied back, "Well
he is always busy, running an auto shop is not easy at all.... but I can
see if he would accomodate you coming by on Saturday around lunch,
perhaps?"
Chloe was taken aback but then realized that would be perfect. This
would be the first breakthrough in the mission, she thought, plant a bug
there at Eddie Kurtz's garage, discreetly of course, and then figure out
with Morton the next move and go from there. The long game approach has
worked at least, she assured herself. She paused before giving a reply.
"Why yes, can you give me the address please?" Joey nodded then gave her
the address for his father's garage and arranged to meet her there
around noon on Saturday.
Saturday midday, Chloe made her way to the auto garage. She made a point
of rolling up the retractable roof of her sports car as the garage was
in the more seedy part of town. But with some luck, she made it just in
time. The garage was off on an intersection of two streets (Cherry and
Baker) where one went off to the right and the other dead end at said
intersection. The garage itself was a single building with a few cars
out in front but she noticed a fenced off backyard with a bunch of
junked cars and parts strewn across the desolate backlot.
Chloe herself was clad in a practical outfit-a white blouse and khaki
jacket, with dark skirt and stockings, her feet adorned with modest
heels. Her hair straight down her back, with a fleur de lis hair clip on
it. She had her usual green purse, with her usual fineries but the bug
device was tucked in there, looking like a deadbolt-perfect thing to put
in an auto shop. She took a moment to look at herself in the car mirror,
ok I'm ready as I will ever be, she thought as she got out and walked
over to the garage. She braced herself for the worst.
As soon she got towards the front door, a figure stumbles out, one that
she knew right off the bat. It was Joey, clad in a denim overall,
stained with dirt and oil, grinning at the sight of Chloe. She smiled
back then quickened her pace only to see his hands stained with some
oil. Ah so thats why we only done on a date 1-2 times on the weekends,
he likely works with his father on the weekends.
"So I take it you have been busy eh," she remarked with a giggle. "Well,
yeah, Saturday is the day I help my pops out with work, with the
occasional night during the week." Joey replied back, extending a hand
to Chloe before realizing his hands weren't clean. "Ah right, let me go
clean up a bit then we can eat-pops got some food here for us to eat."
The two entered into the garage when Chloe heard a thunderous stamping
of feet coming from within.
A man, no more like a giant, entered into the front room where Joey and
Chloe had entered. He was bald, and wore a dirtied shirt and pants as if
despite cleaning efforts some stains couldn't get them removed. He was
quite muscled, looked to be strong enough to haul immense weight without
breaking a sweat. His face was rather rotund, with a big toothy smile
and light brown eyes that while seeming friendly hid a secret menace.
Chloe was internally shocked but quickly composed herself.
"So, you are the girl that my boy been seeing for some time eh?" Eddie
asked rather casually looking over the young woman with an eye that
while not creepy gave Chloe an uncomfortable vibe. "Ah well hello there,
lass, I'm Ed Palmer, owner of the Palmer Auto Repair Shop-I'm sure you
have been told this by Joey?" Eddie stated then breaking out into a
hearty laugh. He then called out into the shop, "Hey guys break time for
lunch and Joey got a special guest here!" Soon three other men walked
in, two of which were nearly twin bulk blonde mopheads and the third guy
looking a bit familiar to Chloe. "Ah they are Hans and Karlheinz twin
nephews of mine and the third chap is Roger." Eddie pointed them out as
they came in. "Hey boss... oho Joey that's your girl, dude nice catch!"
The twins quickly spoke up when they saw Chloe standing there. Roger
stood there and quietly waved to her. It was then that Chloe realized
who Roger was-the guy who was with Mickey the night of the slumber
party. She then noticed Roger came into the room holding a bolt cutter
which he quickly placed down, aha that explains the cutted phone line,
maybe. Joey had ducked into the bathroom to wash his hands, but came
back quickly to Chloe's side.
Chloe composed herself, then spoke up. "Oh, hello there I'm Chloe
L'Amour, nice to meet you all," in a refined kind manner, giving a nice
bow to these men. But on the inside, she felt a pang of disgust. This
was the man who ruined Morton's life and countless others. It's likely
that the twins and Roger are in on it too. But I hope that Joey isn't,
doesn't seem like him, she thought. "Well we can use the side room over
here, Hans and Karlheinz clear away the table in there-Roger go get the
food it should be sitting in the truck, need to get that heated up for a
bit of time," Eddie instructed and the men got to work on that while he
escorted Joey and Chloe into the side room. "So I take it you are new
around these parts?" Eddie inquired to Chloe. "Mhm, well I have been a
few months, though I live alone most of the time due to my parents being
out of town on business" she replied calmly. Once the table got cleared
up and some chairs were put around it, Chloe, Joey and Eddie sat down to
wait for the food to get in. They chatted for a bit, where Eddie
mentioned how he had worked in the area for a few years, moving out here
after the death of his wife. Chloe nodded in agreement, though she took
his words with a grain of salt. I will have to check with Morton on that
later, she thought to herself.
Soon, Roger came back in with the food crate and a drink cooler. He
opened up, the aroma of the stew wafting into the room. Joey had grabbed
some plastic forks and plates and placed them around everyone sitting at
the table. "Mmm burger mac n cheese eh Roger?" Eddie asked, followed by
a laugh. "Heh well my older sister Rachael makes it quite nice, sir, one
of the few meals she can make without burning it" Roger bashfully
replied back as he scooped up portions onto the plates. Eddie and Hans
laughed back, with Eddie responding, "Well ok then, hey Joey put the
CLOSED sign up at the front window," with a low booming voice. He then
turned to Chloe. "So, you planning on being here for long?" "Oh well,
that will depend on what happens with my parents' work-we shall see, I
might end going back to France after the school year," Chloe replied
casually, glad that Joey was out of sight briefly not to hear that. "Ah
well it's nice that Joey finally has someone special for a while....
Anyway let's ea,t" Eddie stated as Joey got back in. The meal in
question was macaroni noodles bathed in white cheddar sauce with bits of
bacon and larger pieces of hamburger meat sticking among them. Chloe
smiled nicely as she ate slowly the food. Conversation was mainly
between Eddie and his fellow co-workers, with Joey and Chloe exchanging
pleasantries as they usually did, though Chloe would notice an odd
glance from Eddie from time to time.
After a while, Chloe excused herself to the bathroom, but that was only
a feint. She made her way there, waited for a moment, then scurried
quietly into the main room of the garage. She had placed the bug inside
a hidden pocket in her dress, and was looking around for a place to put
it discreetly. She noticed that while there were a couple of cars in the
garage, it didn't seem to her that ANY work was being done on them, like
at all. Instead most of the room had stacks of metal containers lying
about, not sure if by design or haphazardly. She finally saw a table
with screws and other tools. She placed the deadbolt 'bug' onto the
table carefully. But as she got back towards the side room with the
others, a person was standing in the doorway, Roger.
"Oh what are you doing here?" he inquired softly, the roar of laughter
and talking form the side room still present. Chloe paused for a moment
then he resumed, "Hey I have seen you before.... oh right that night at
Renee's slumber party." He then grinned quite menacing to her. "Why yes
I remember that-you were the one who cutted the phone's landline right?"
Chloe retorted back, "I figured that from the bolt cutter you had
earlier-you got skill with cutting things," smartly grinning back at
Roger, that should put him in his place. "Even if I did-and I'm not
saying I did-how would a delicate French girl like yourself know of that
huh?" Roger responded back, giving Chloe pause. "Uhh well, I am quite a
clever girl," giggling as she walked past him then whispered "Oh don't
worry I won't tell anyone about that as long as you keep your mouth
silent on me being in here." Giving Roger a peck on the cheek, she then
made her way back to chat with Joey and Eddie.
It was nearly a hour or two when they finished up. Eddie had given her
some leftovers to take home with her, which she took graciously. Before
she left, Joey took her aside and said "Well now you have seen him-
thoughts?" Chloe thought for a moment then replied "I'm sure he is
honest and simple businessman, and great dad" then smiled at Joey. Joey
then nearly went in fro a kiss on her scarlet lips, but she stopped her-
"Only on the cheek please, french custom my dear" she reminded him-which
he then corrected, giving her a brief kiss on her cheek. and off she
went, back to her house.
...........
Some time later, once Chloe had left the garage shop and Joey had gone
home to study, Eddie snuck into the main room, grabbing one of the metal
containers. He grabbed and brought it into his main office. He then
opened it up slowly. A faint gold light glimmered on his face as a
malicious girn spread over his face. Inside the case were a couple of
gold bars, with a mark on them in bold letters: FORT KNOX. He then
crackled to himself then saw Roger standing in the doorway. "Go find out
what you can about this french girl-seems quite fishy from what you have
told me" Eddie commanded. Roger nodded. "Alright Boss Kurtz, I'll look
into it. I hope this won't interfere with our plans." "Oh don't worry,
it won't," Eddie retorted briskly, before the two shared a laugh
together.
.......
Chloe made her way back to the house, glad to be done with the deed. She
got back inside, where Morton was sitting at the couch in the living
room, glancing back up to see her come in.
"So you saw him right?"
"Yeah and I must say he scared me, quite the shifty looking man"
"Well most mobsters tend to be, it's in their nature."
"Well for a guy who runs a supposed garage, not much in the way of car
parts-lots of metal containers....."
"Wait, metal containers.... did they say anything, on them I mean?"
"Uhh no, not that I could see, seems scratched up on the surface."
"Well don't worry too much on that now, you got the listening device
placed right?"
"Why yes of course I did, wouldn't be worth my salt as a spy if I
didn't."
"Ah good to hear....well we have just have to wait to say if anything
goes down the pipe so to say, til then keep an heavy eye on Joey."
"Ok, well do...." Chloe took a moment to pause then made her way back to
her bedroom. As she went in, she walked over to the mirror on her vanity
and then uttered solemnly "Joey there's a reason you can never kiss me
on the lips...." then placed a single finger to her lips, rubbing it
softly on there, trying to remove the lipstick there.....but it was
permanently affixed to her lips, forever enticing and forever plastic. I
hope I am wrong about Joey, oh dear I hope not as she pondered while
getting to bed.
Next time.....
Chloe has to deal with the most terrible instrument of High School: the
rumor mill. Renee Masters has a scheme to possibly ruin Chloe's standing
in school so what she will do about it? Well she being a spy, the sky's
the limit!
