The girls finished their breakfast then dressed and made their way to school. It was mid morning by the time they got there so they were surprised to see all the pupils milling around outside. Chloe noticed two police cars parked in front of the main building.

As they walked through the gate there was a shriek from a group of girls standing just inside, Paula Watts came running over to them, tears running down her face, she threw her arms around Chloe, hugging her.

Chloe saw her mother’s car turning into the car park, her mother got out and ran across to them.

“I got a phone call from the school,” Ann replied, “they said the police wanted to talk to you and that l should be present, do you think it’s about…..” she suddenly realised there were a group of girls gathered around them so she ushered Chloe and Suzy far enough away so they couldn’t be overheard.

“They wouldn’t tell me what it was about,” Ann whispered.

Suzy noticed Miss Grey walking towards them.

“Thank you for coming so quickly Mrs Watkins,” she said, her faced streaked with mascara from crying. “Will you and Chloe come with me please.”

“What’s this about?” Ann demanded, not making a move, “why Chloe, what has she supposed to have done?”

“I…I don’t think Chloe is suspected of doing anything,” Miss Grey said, “it’s just that something has happened and the police want to speak to Chloe.”

“The police!” Ann shouted, “what do the police want with my daughter? Are they arresting her?” She fumbled in her handbag for her phone. “I’m calling my husband,” she said, “Chloe is not going anywhere near the police until we have a solicitor here.”

“Please Mrs Watkins,” Miss Grey said, aware that the pupils were crowding around them, “they assure me that Chloe is not in any trouble.” She moved away, taking Ann with her, once they were separated from the crowd she stood close to Ann. “None of us apart from the Headmaster knows exactly what’s going on,” she whispered, “all we know is that Mr Harris was found dead this morning and that the police want to speak to Chloe.”

“No it’s nothing like that,” Miss Grey interrupted her, “we don’t know anything more but the police insist that Chloe is not in trouble.”

“Okay,” Ann calmed, “we’ll come with you, but the moment l think anyone is not telling the truth we are out of there.”

Miss Grey led the way, Ann and Chloe following. Suzy was left standing there, she didn’t know what to do, all the other pupils were ignoring her, then Paul Rodgers walked over. “Are you alright Suzy?” He said, “what’s going on? What do they want with Chloe?”

“I know as much as you do,” Suzy replied.

“You don’t think it’s something to do with what we do at lunch time is it?” He said, “is she grassing us up to the coppers?”

Miss Grey appeared at the main entrance and told them all to make their way to the gym for an assembly.

Ann and Chloe were ushered into the Headmaster’s study. There were chairs laid out in a circle, Dr Webb, the Headmaster, approached them.

“Thank you for coming,” he said to Ann, he was a tall handsome man in his fifties, Ann noticed the way he touched her arm as he spoke, she had mentioned to Roy in the past that Dr Webb had paid her a lot of attention at the last parent’s evening and she had joked with Roy that she wouldn’t mind letting him fuck her. She saw another man and a woman standing by their chairs.

“Let me introduce Detective Inspector Reed and Detective Constable Peters,” he said.

They all nodded to each other, then Dr.Webb closed the door and invited everyone to sit.

“Please Mrs Watkins,” Reed tried to calm her, “we only want to ask Chloe a few questions, she’s not in trouble l promise you. Perhaps l should move this on and tell you what it’s about.”

He then proceeded to tell them that earlier that morning, his landlady had found Mr Harris dead in his armchair, she had called the police and immediately it was apparent that he had committed suicide. “It appears that he had drunk a bottle of whiskey and taken a bottle full of sleeping tablets.”

“So what has this got to do with Chloe?” Ann asked.

“Mr Harris left a note,” Reed said, “all it said was ‘Tell Chloe Watkins l’m sorry’,”

Chloe was shocked by the news but knew she had to think fast, she bought a few seconds by bursting into tears and hugging her mother. As she hugged her, she whispered faintly in her mother’s ear, “Follow my lead Mum.”

Chloe took a few moments to collect herself, everyone waited for her then she sat back, looked straight at Reed and said “I don’t want to discuss it.”

“Chloe,” Dr Webb said, “if anything happened, if Mr Harris acted in any way inappropriately towards you, you can tell us, it won’t go any further than this room.”

“I don’t want to talk about it,” Chloe said, “l’m not going to give evidence, l’m not saying anything, l just want to try and forget it, l’m sorry Mr Harris is dead but l don’t want to say what happened, l told Mum about it last night, she wanted me to report it but l said no.”

“That’s right,” Ann said, seamlessly taking up the story, “l told Chloe she should report it but she insisted that she wouldn’t do it, l know you have a job to do, but l don’t want my daughter involved in this, she has enough to cope with, she’s moving up to the senior school after the summer holidays and she doesn’t want any stigma following her.”

“We understand that Chloe is upset,” Peter’s said, “but we need to know what happened for the inquest.”

“What, and have my daughter’s name dragged through the mud,” Ann snapped at her, “do you have any Idea what life would be like for her if details of what happened got out, the abuse she would get on social media, no sorry, you’re not putting my daughter through that, that pervert is dead and good riddance but you leave my daughter out of it. Come on Chloe, we’re going,” she said, taking Chloe by the hand, putting her arm around her and walking her out of the room.

As they reached the car, Suzy came running over, Ann told them both to get in the car.

“Jesus Chloe,” Ann said once they were safely away from prying ears, “you’re a fucking good actress.”

They both explained to Suzy what had happened.

“Oh shit,” Suzy responded, “do they know what he did to you?”

“No, we didn’t give any details,” Chloe said, “but l could tell they think he raped me and l didn’t deny it, just said l didn’t want to talk about it.”

“But it’s so sad he killed himself,” Suzy replied.
