His small community of ten thousand people or so had over a dozen churches. Southern and Independent Baptist, nondenominational Bible churches, Pentacostal, Methodist, African Methodist Episcopal were all represented. One thing they all had in common-they were all extremely conservative in their outlooks, which translated into a fierce anti LGBT bias. Anyone known to be-or even suspected of being any of these, was shunned and often harassed. Minors were taken to their pastors to 'have the gay prayed away.' When that didn't work, gay conversion therapy camps were generally the answer. For the parents anyway, for the kids it never worked. Then again, growing up in that environment kept most kids with those tendencies in the shadows, often escaping the community or even the state as soon as they turned 18, or whenever they could. Some kids actually ran away and managed to stay hidden till they did reach adulthood. This was the environment Jack Casey had been born and grown up in. It wouldn't have been a problem, except for one thing-Jack Casey had known from a very early age that he was transgendered. Of course, his fundamentalist father had beaten the devil out of him. Jack got the message-so he kept his true self hidden. In his small town, everyone knew everyone, so procuring any female clothing or makeup was impossible-had he done so much as browsed the makeup aisle in the drug store, his parents would have known by the end of the day. Puberty blockers were impossible, since no doctor in town would prescribe them. Then came the day of the unexplained cosmic event. The solar flare, comet tail and new power source combined to affect almost seven million people on the planet, with results. Jack was one of those so affected. He got lucky, just like an eighth grader in a large northern city, with one of the same changes. Jack was in his room, doing his homework, when he felt a massive jolt and everything went black, same as with everyone else susceptable to the changing combination. He was unconscious for several hours, and then he stirred. "Holy crap, what was that?" he said to himself. As he did so, he noticed that his voice was much higher then normal, and he felt a strange weight on his chest. Between checking his body (breasts, curves, long blonde hair, something else missing upon examination) and a look in the mirror, he figured out what had happened. "Holy shit - I'm a GIRL. How the hell did that happen? Oh my God, how are my parents going to take this, and the pastor, and the school. Not that being a girl is a bad thing - but I sure as hell didn't expect it this way." Jack was secretly pleased at his transformation, and really DID want to wear more feminine clothing and makeup, but he couldn't express that to his parents, especially his father. If he had any powers, he could leave them and use them to make a living on his own, and actually live the way he wanted to. The way he had wanted to all of his life, as long as he could remember. He changed into the dark blue pajama bottoms and t-shirt his mother gave him and went to sleep. She had also given him a few other things to change into in the morning. When his alarm rang, he got up, showered and washed his hair. When it was dried, he used a scrunchie she had given him to make a pony tail. He looked at what she had given him and gulped, actually with pleasure. Some of them were things he never thought he's be allowed to wear. But he was far from an expert, and he didn't think he could rely on that for protection. He was starting to realize just how vulnerable he was, now that he was really and truly female. There was time for that-the next step was to go talk to the pastor of Three Seeds in the Spirit Predestinarian Free Will Baptist Church, the small independent congregation his parents belonged to and his father was an elder of. He wasn't looking forward to it-as soon as he was eighteen he planned on quitting and finding one less rigid. He absolutely did NOT have any illusions as to how this would turn out. Of course, Jack would have to dress, act and be treated entirely as a girl from that point on. Brother Bill preferred that women wear only skirts or dresses and be modest in their makeup, and of course submissive to their husbands or fathers. He insisted on that dress code for worship services, and Jack - or Jackie as he now addressed her, would be expected to comply, no exceptions. Jackie, as she now thought of herself, agreed to comply with his wishes as long as she lived at home, which ideally would be until she married (gulp!). Jackie informed him that she did expect to attend college, as she had always been interested in Physics and was very good in Mathematics, and planned on taking Calculus in her senior year of the local High School (one of three in the county). While it was rare for girls in their region to take classes like that, she did have a different origin from most female students, and wasn't going to drop it for a Home Economics course. While Brother Bill disagreed with her career choices, he did affirm that as long as she eventually focused her orientation toward males, marriage, and stayed chaste until she was married, there really was no question of her transformation being sinful. Upon exiting the church, Marybeth Casey called her husband to give him the news about the two meetings. They agreed that the two girls (for that's what Jackie's new status was) would go shopping in the nearest large city for a basic wardrobe and necessary skincare, and beauty supplies. Even though the Casey's attended an extremely conservative Baptist church, they did allow modest makeup and other adornments, contrary to the doctrines of some other congregations. After an hour of driving, they came to a mid-sized mall, which contained most of the same stores found in malls across the country. Their first stop was Claire's, for an ear piercing and some necessary jewelry. Jackie came out with several pairs of earrings, a few rings, bracelets and necklaces. The major department stores were next. Boskov, with its large Juniors department provided several pairs of jeans and slacks, five skirts and two dresses. A stop in the tops area provided an even dozen. "Thank God for clearance," Marybeth thought to herself. The shoe department provided several pairs of flats and two pairs of three inch heels in black and brown. Jackie would have to learn to walk in them before wearing them anywhere, such as a school party. She also knew she'd need more items as time went by, especially shoes. After shoes came a trip to the cosmetics department for a quick makeover and a bottle of Narcisse cologne, with a purchase of various basic necessities appropriate to a Christian teenaged girl, and finally lingerie. Marybeth absolutely refused to take Jackie to Victoria's Secret, as they felt the place catered mostly to women looking to exploit their sexuality, and not just for their husbands, but again, Boskov's had a good selection. Jackie came out with several sets in both lace and satin in several colors, plus a bathing suit. Getting fitted by the professional on staff was quite embarrassing for her, as the question of why she didn't know her size at age sixteen came up. Marybeth offered that previously, her daughter had worn only basic, plain items and had finally realized she was a girl, becoming a young woman. She now wanted to look and feel like one. A quick dash to the purse aisle for a shoulder bag of her own, and they were done. "Something you'll need to get used to honey-go into the drugstore and buy yourself a package of tampons, eventually you'll need them. This was the most embarrassing moment yet, but Jackie exited the car, looking for all the world like any other girl, walked to the proper section of the drugstore, took a package off the rack without bothering to check the brand, took it to the cashier (female thank God) and paid for her purchase. "Honey, you'll be doing that every month for most of the rest of your life, unless you're pregnant. Which I hope doesn't happen until and unless you get married. But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it." The two got home just a few minutes before Mr. Casey did. Marybeth suggested that her daughter change into a skirt and nice top, plus her black heels and try to neatly apply at least a little makeup. They decided that after the two appointments they'd had that morning, plus the after noon shopping trip, it was necessary for Jack, Senior, to see his child as a girl. And be prepared to interact with her AS a sixteen year old girl. Since she had lived all that time as a boy, they realized that it would be psychologically difficult if not impossible for Jackie to put up with the restrictions expected of a girl, especially since she was within two years of turning eighteen, and if things got too rough, she could simply leave. What she would do to support herself they didn't know, but they were sure she would manage to find something once she finished high school. Even if it was only as a waitress. But for now Jack would be home soon, and they didn't have long to wait. Jack, senior, was in a more talkative mood than he had been the previous evening. Stories of changes, as they were being called, were all the news could talk about. Some had fantastic powers, some had turned evil, a lot had undergone gender changes (both ways) as that seemed to be the most common, or at least the single most common transformation. Some poor unfortunates had become monstrosities of one sort or another. They still didn't know if Jackie had any powers. She wasn't super strong, she wasn't invulnerable, she wasn't super fast, she couldn't phase, she didn't have x-ray vision, as previously enumerated. If she did have any powers, they were most likely minor and would manifest themselves at the proper time. During the family conversation, it was decided that Jackie could stay out of school a few days, while her parents went to the principal to explain her change, re-enroll her if required and ensure the school made the necessary accomodations for their new daughter. If necessary, they could send her to live with relatives out of town in order to attend another school. They hoped that wouldn't be necessary. Dr. Babcock (EdD), the principal wasn't happy. He had heard of many changes throughout the world, and truly hoped it wouldn't affect his school. Unfortunately, Jackie made two. The other one was quite beneficial-a young man who had been paralyzed from the waist down in a diving accident several years previously had miraculously been restored to full health, with a minor strength bonus added in. And now Jack is turned into Jackie. Armed with the note from Dr. Barclay, there wasn't much he could do to keep her out of the locker rooms and girl's lavatories. He was sure that a lot of the other girl's parents would be upset and demand protection for their own daughters. Dr. Babcock did insist on an examination by their own school nurse before Jackie would be allowed full use of the facilities. The Caseys agreed, and set up the appointment for Thursday of that week. Jackie would be expected to follow all school rules pertaining to female students, which mostly covered the dress code. Skirt length, necklines,required undergarments, makeup and heel height made up the bulk of the school code for girls. Mrs. Casey noted that Jackie hd a copy of the handbook at home, and would study and comply with the girls section to the letter. She would have a long way to go in order to fit in with any group. The rest of the week passed quietly, with Jackie taking lessons from her mother in how to comport herself in her new gender. While Marybeth realized that her daughter was sixteen and not an adult woman, there were certain norms that were constant no matter what her age. She made sure that Jackie was as prepared as possible, and as alert as possible, to all aspects of her new life. She was fully prepared for when her first period would arrive, though they were both sure that Jackie would be somewhat frightened and apprehensive when it did. But that was something every female went through at age eleven or a little later, nothing Jackie couldn't-since she had to-handle. The family decided that Jackie should start school in a nice pair of jeans and sneakers, plus a modest top. Things she was used to, and could move in. Especially if sher had to. Makeup lessons were given, though Jackie used youtube for some more hints more appropriate to a teenagers taste. Her mother was beautiful, and very good at applying the modest cosmetics their church approved of, but she was still a woman in her late thirties. Marybeth understood and wasn't in the least insulted. She remembered her own teenaged years. Finally, the first week was over, with the news still screaming about the 'monsters in their midst'. In some cases it was literally true, as some of the changes, often with great power had chosen to use their powers to commit crimes with often no consequences. One girl in particular in the northern part of the country had received immense strength and had committed a jewelry store robbery resulting in a loss of life, as several police were either killed or seriously injured. Another girl in the same area had received multiple powes, and had tried to stop first one, but with no luck so far. Jackie didn't seem to have any, which didn't bother her in the least. The day came, and Jackie Casey prepared for school. She woke on the morning of the first day, got up, showered and fixed her hair in a simple ponytail. She dressed in the outfit she had chosen the night before, and applied simple makeup-light foundation, blush, mascara and a dark pink lipstick. Five minutes max. A squirt of cologne and off she went. She saw two of her neighbors walking out of their houses at the same time, and they gave her a look of recognition and astonishment. "Jack-what the hell happened to you? You ARE Jack Casey, aren't you?" asked Ginny Meyers. David Barnett asked much the same thing, but in cruder terms. Jackie got in line with her two (former?) friends and began to explain. Ginny was understanding, and promised to run interference for her with some of the other girls, David wasn't so sure. He had spent a lot of time in locker rooms with Jack over the years, and wasn't absolutely certain he wanted to be friends with her? him? just yet. They had a lot of history and he wasn't sure he wanted a girl knowing all his secrets. Who knew what she'd share in the girls room or at sleepovers? He'd have to think about this, though he wouldn't bully her or mock her for having undergone this change. Besides, she was cute (which he wouldn't admit to A SOUL!). The three teens got to the school, and Jackie took a deep breath before she went up the stairs to the main door. She could feel conversations all over come to a sudden halt, and a lot of stares from just about every student on the lawn. Too late to back out now. However, the fact of millions of transformations was all over the news still, and the assumption was that Jackie was one of them. Had to be, she looked much too feminine to be a boy dressed in girls clothing. Several of Ginny's friends, came over to talk to her, while David actually peeled off to join a group of HIS friends. Naturally, both of them, being the first to talk to 'the new girl' were subject to a lot of questions from their peers, and the girls talking to Ginny and Jackie asked a lot directly to the nervous change. They all specifically wanted to know if she was really, truly a complete XX female. That would be the deciding factor of their accepting her in the lavatories and locker room. If it was just a mental change, or something that simply made her look like a girl, then it wasn't going to happen. For the moment, they all seemed satisfied, especially when the Principal made the morning announcements, assuring everyone that Jackie Casey was exactly who she seemed to be, no more and no less. Her school day started, with a lot of stares in each and every class, and a necessary question and answer time in each one. The teachers weren't pleased by it, but they realized the necessity of taking the time all at once, rather than stretch it out into several class periods. By the end of the day, everyone who needed to know about her did-and the high school rumor mill was in full swing. The girls had provisionally decided to accept her, and most of the boys decided to basically ignore her. They had all known her as Jack, most of them had been his friends, and they certainly weren't going to make a move on the former boy. While she would be safe, she seemed to be destined for a life of singleness, at least while in high school. Though the fact was that virtually every male in the school thought she was a stone fox, and had it been anyone else would have given their eyeteeth to get a date with her. The second day started much as the first, however with a major change. Jackie decided that since she was a girl, and would be one for the foreseeable future at least, she was going to make a point and dress like one. She pulled out a denim skirt and a pair of two inch heels to go with a pink pullover top. She applied a little more makeup, and had polished her nails in a dark pink the previous evening. Since this was what she had to be, she might as well enjoy it. She also decided that since she was a changee girl, one of the few who didn't seem to have any powers, she needed to start retraining herself in Isshinryu Karate, the system she had started several years before. She still had a kicking bag on a post in her basement, though her uniform probably wouldn't fit any more. That was okay, someday she would find a dojo and get the actual black belt credentials she would need if she ever decided to teach. Unsurprisingly, the day went even smoother than the one before. People were used to her, and she even got quite a few compliments on her outfit, and her bravery in wearing her skirt so soon. What they didn't know, and NO ONE ever would was that Jackie was finally living her lifelong dream. She truly had been transgender, and had always felt much more of a girl than a boy, and had always wished she could dress and be accepted exactly the way she presented now. No need for hormones (she produced her own now), definitely no need for surgery or a real life test (she was real life!) and even a life of total womanhood- periods, pregnancy, PMS, and everything else that went along with being a woman. This wasn't the way she had planned on it-she had planned on going the long term difficult medical route and coming out only appearing to be female. But this was so much better! She had a doctor's evaluation to prove it. She even had the much more difficult to obtain grudging approval of the pastor of Three Seeds in the Spirit. Life couldn't be better. POSTSCRIPT When Jackie began training that afternoon, wearing sweats until she could get a new uniform, she discovered she did have a minor power. Somehow, her martial arts abilities had been magnified, something she discovered when she kicked her bag, sending it across the room. Her punches, strikes and blocks were just as powerful, and her speed in delivering them had also increased. In other words, she had the power of, more or less 'super karate'. She kept up training herself, and convinced her parents to allow her to attend a deep south university that had Isshinryu as its martial arts program. The instructor was a woman with a seventh degree black belt, who was extremely impressed with Jackie's skills, and promoted her to first brown before Christmas, with first degree black before summer break of her freshman year. The end of her junior year brought her a second degree. She had majored in Electrical Engineering and minored in business, with a second minor in Air Force ROTC. Upon graduation, she was commissioned a second lieutenant in the USAF and assigned to Okinawa at her request. Luckily, there was an Isshinryu dojo right outside the gates of her base, and before her two year deployment was up, she had earned a third degree black belt. Best of all, there wasn't any prejudice against transgender individuals shown to her, because she wasn't transgender. She was how she should have been, a complete woman.
