Bruce Wayne III was an extremely wealthy and athletic young man. Given
his ancestry, neither one was surprising. His grandfather had been Bruce
Wayne I, the Batman. He was the heir to the Wayne Foundation fortune, and
sole owner of it. He had married Selena Kyle, the Catwoman, after she had
reformed and given up her life of crime. They had one son, Bruce Wayne
II.
Bruce II had been trained from an early age in all the martial arts and
detective skills his father possessed, as a graduate of Zhamballa, the
most secretive temple in the world, high in the Himalayan mountains. The
skills that had enabled him to become Batman. Bruce II learned these
skills well, and had taken the mantle of the Batman when his father had
realized he couldn't continue in the role, due to his advancing age.
Bruce II performed well as the caped crusader, continuing to strike fear
in the hearts of evildoers in Gotham City every night. When the time was
right, he also married, to the daughter of Lena Luthor, Lorelei. Lena had
wanted a child, but she did not want a husband. With the Luthor fortune
at her disposal, that was not a problem. The fortune that Lorelei
inherited when her mother died. They also had one child, a boy-Bruce
Wayne III. The man who was heir to both family fortunes, making him
either the second or third richest man in the world. Bruce III was well
prepared to don the cape and cowl when the time arrived. In the meantime,
he was understudying as Robin, the traditional sidekick of the Batman.
And he was good at it. And just as much an alpha male as his two
predecessors.
About two years after he had taken on the title of Batman, and his father
had retired, he had a strange occurrence. He doubled over in pain one day
in the mansion, and fell unconscious. He remained that way for several
hours. When he woke up, he took stock of his situation and discovered
what millions of others in the world had experienced. He noticed the long
black hair, the well formed breasts, the generally smaller size and lack
of male genitals. In other words, Bruce Wayne III, ultimate alpha male of
the world had been a victim of the the most common change experienced by
the majority of changees from the radiation combination. He was now
female.
He didn't know what had happened at first, of course, as the phenomenon
was too new. But he did watch and listen on the large screen television
in his private apartment and discovered he wasn't alone. The super powers
ability hadn't manifested in very many changes yet either, so he didn't
know about that. But he did have to do some research on changing back,
and let his parents, who also lived at the mansion, know what had
happened. And how this was going to affect his activities as Batman.
Batwoman? Batgirl? He didn't know, and right then, that wasn't the most
important thing anyway.
By this time, his parents had heard the worldwide news, and while they
were shocked it had happened it had happened to their son, they weren't as
shocked as many parents or others throughout the world were. Given all
the strange things the Wayne family had experienced over the years, this
was just one more item to be overcome, dealt with or accepted. As of yet,
they didn't know which.
One advantage they had was their immense wealth. Bruce would need a new
wardrobe and such for day to day life. And he (she?) couldn't get away
with sloppy jeans and t-shirts either. As a Wayne (distant relative? Or
come clean and go public? That would have to be decided. For legal
reasons, control of the family assets would have to be clearly titled) she
would be expected to be attired in the height of fashion, purchased from
some of the most exclusive boutiques both in Gotham City and for that
matter, the fashion houses in Milan and Paris. Given her station in life,
Bruce Wayne III would have to get used to wearing dresses almost all of
the time. Except during her excursions as Batman-or whatever.
Since the change involved their adult son becoming an adult woman, Lorelei
took charge as the one most qualified to guide the transition. She took
her new daughter Brianna (that had been decided by the three family
members in their initial discussion) into her private clothing area, and
sat the girl down. She started a conversation of those topics that
Brianna, as a woman would need to know. Naturally, intimate female
biological topics were on the list, as was learning to walk in heels
(Jimmy Choos, Pradas, Guccis and Chretian Loubetans with their iconic red
sole were de rigeur for a Wayne woman), sitting and rising in a straight
skirt, a quick makeup lesson and how to do a fast hair arrangement (more
detailed lessons in these and other topics would come later) and Basic
manners for an upper class woman. In other words, Bruce's life would be
totally different. His (or her) continuing as the Batman was something
that would have to be discussed. In the meantime, Lorelei gave her
daughter unopened packages of lingerie, and pulled a simple blue sheath
dress from her closet. They were going on Brianna's first shopping
expedition. Gotham had no shortage of exclusive boutiques catering to the
wealthy and powerful, and Lorelei Wayne had unlimited charge accounts in
all of them. The normal stores found in the local mall just wouldn't do
for them. Bruce-or Brianna-was at first unbelievably embarrassed to be a
woman at all, let along going out in public in a dress and trying on even
more items of women's clothing. Plus ear piercing, manicure, hair
appointment and makeover. Brianna Wayne was not happy, to say the least.
But she did realize that she was only doing what was expected, given her
station. Not doing it would set up innumerable red flags. Lorelei helped
her daughter choose a veritable mound of appropriate clothing, dresses,
suits, gowns, shoes, jewelry and accessories and a visit to the most
exclusive salon in Gotham. Even the wealthy needed an appointment, unless
of course your last name was Wayne or a very few in a similar stratum. A
Wayne woman could just walk in and bump any other customer there on line,
including the First Lady should she happen to be there. A Female
president maybe not, but it would be close. Brianna did have a few
pantsuits and other pants outfits, such as a few pairs of jeans, but even
they weren't something you'd find at the Gap or even DKNY. Also, Brianna
insisted on exercise clothing, and at a sporting goods store she did pick
up a few martial arts uniforms, both for Karate and Judo-Bruce had held
Black Belts in both, and Brianna intended to continue training in them.
Either with her father or finding a good dojo. In addition, reports were
coming in of many changees developing some sort of super power, and she
was anxious to find out if she had one, too. That answer wasn't long in
coming-she did.
After several weeks of getting used to her new body and its limitations
and abilities, she had a conversation with her father about her future as
Batman. Obviously she couldn't use the name, and she didn't want to use
even a modified form of the costume either. She also nixed the idea of
Batwoman or Batgirl, she wanted to go in a new direction entirely. Her
father agreed that she should continue on her path, as it was her destiny
and the family tradition. He told her of a family legend.
When her grandfather, Bruce I was a teen he spent a summer in a Kansas
town called Smallville, home of Superboy. Even at that age, he had
received combat training from Alfred, his butler who was a former Sergeant
Major (WO1) in the British Special Air Service-the SAS. The toughest
western military group in the world, though the US Delta or the Australian
SAS might give them a run for the title. He was also highly athletic and
possessed a keen analytical mind, able to sift through clues and find a
solution. While there, he teamed up with Superboy to solve several cases
and even helped to apprehend the criminals. While doing so, he wore a
cowl and cape and used the name 'Flying Fox', coincidentally a precursor
to his future title of Batman, since the flying fox was a species of bat.
Brianna's father suggested she use that name, and design a feminine form
of a uniform in order to disguise herself. It made sense, given Brianna's
super power. She had the ability to emit sound waves, and could use them
to locate objects with a good chance of identifying the shape. Or she
could use them to deafen an opponent or mask any other noise in the area.
They actually discussed her eliminating any reference to the Bat motif and
going with a name like 'Sonar'. Either way, Brianna Wayne was going to
become a super heroine, and continue to help clean up Gotham City, which
if anything had gotten worse in the last forty years or so. Of course,
most cities were deteriorating at a rapid pace, and none of the heroes
could do much about it, though they tried. The vast number of changees
from the event wasn't helping very much. Some of them had become heroes,
such as a teen girl in the northern United States, though she was occupied
with a personal enemy who had also been transformed, but had turned to
evil. Many of the others either had minor powers, or were simply living
their lives as best they could given their changes and abilities. Brianna
and her father went down to the Batcave several levels below Wayne Mansion
and sat down at a duplicating machine, based on the 3-D printer of decades
before, though it now could work with almost any pliable material, and
designed a uniform. Rather than the dark gray and black worn by the
males, hers was a soft brown, with a series of concentric circles on the
chest rather than a bat. This symbolized her sonic powers, while the
uniform vaguely resembled the originals. It did have pants rather than a
skirt, unlike Superwoman's original costume, because that would make it
easier for her to get around and engage in combat if necessary. Her boots
also didn't have a heel-that was just ridiculous. Kara could get away
with them, but she was a Kryptonian. That night she decided to make her
first patrol.
There were several vehicles in the garage of the Batcave, so she naturally
took one, though not the Batmobile. That would have been too
recognizable. A very fast paint job turned one brown, though it still had
all the modifications she needed to do her job. Which wasn't long in
coming.
Even though everyone knew how dangerous Gotham City was, especially after
dark, some people, even women, insisted on pressing their luck. One
particular 19 year old student of Gotham University was walking home from
the library when it happened. Several members of one of the street gangs
accosted and surrounded her, intending to have some fun and then probably
eliminate her. The girl naturally screamed, and luckily, Brianna heard
her, as she had ditched the car when she arrived in the central city.
She accessed the situation and swooped in via bat-rope. The gang members
had no idea who she was, and decided that she would be an added attraction
to their assault enjoymet. They were wrong.
It was four against one, but Brianna wasn't at all concerned, even without
using her power. She lit into the closest thug and ensured that he would
most likely never enjoy sex again, her kick to his groin was that hard. A
shuto chop to the throat of another one had him on the ground choking,
while a third received a cracked skull from a Tai-otoshi throw into a
brick building head first. The fourth decided discretion was the better
part of valor and took off running. Brianna hadn't packed any batarangs,
as they would be a dead giveaway, so she had to let him go in order to
tend to the frightened girl. She did disappear before the police arrived
though. She didn't want any entanglements with them yet.
Naturally the papers and electronic media the next day were all over the
case, wondereing who the new masked hero was. And where was Batman? All
sorts of speculation was bandied about, the the bottom line was that she
was a welcome addition to the scene, if she continued to work on the side
of the law. It was noticed that she was a bit more vicious than Batman
was, but it was excused since it was four against one, and she was female,
not having the upper body strength of Batman. At least she didn't kill
anyone.
Brianna couldn't go out the next night. She was expected to be at a
charity function with her parents, even though no one knew that's who they
were. So Brianna (Bri) had to bite the bullet and appear in public in a
formal gown, full makeup and a few hundred thousand dollars worth of
jewelry. Prepared to act the part of a wealthy young socialite, most
likely dancing with some of the eligible bachelors from her social
stratum. Naturally, her gown was form fitting in a sparkling silver, with
matching five inch heels that she just knew were going to kill her feet.
Bright scarlet lips and matching nails were also something she wasn't
looking forward to, but that was the usual dress code (unofficial, of
course, but rigorously followed) for female members of her class at these
types of events. Having been to enough of these events as Bruce, she knew
exactly how the night was going to go.
She was helped out of the Wayne limosine by the chauffeur, and she and her
parents entered the ballroom. Her wrap was taken (no need for a ticket,
everyone knew who the Waynes were) and surveyed the room to see who among
their friends was already present. Of course, everyone who was anyone was
in attendance. The Waynes made their way over to some close family
friends (dating back generations), the Queens, owners of Queen
Industries, a multinational corporation with holdings in virtually every
sector of the worlds economy. With them was a young man from Star City,
their nephew Victor. Victor was the grandson of Oliver Queen, the
original Green Arrow and his wife Felicity Smoak-Queen. Despite herself,
Brianna took a deep breath as she realized how handsome he was and that
she seemed to be attracted to him. This seriously surprised her, as she
had thought she was still attracted to women as Bruce had been, and would
most likely have a lesbian partner if she had any at all. Evidently she
was wrong, and when Victor asked her to dance, she eagerly accepted.
Evidently, Victor was aas taken by her as she was to him. While they were
dancing, she could feel the muscles under his tux, and his movements were
extremely controlled and precise. She remembered his grandfather had been
trained by the League of Assassins, and she wondered if THAT training had
been passed on, as hers had been. If so, and Victor was so inclined, the
two would make an extremely effective team in the fight against the total
breakdown of society that seemed to be accelerating, at least in certain
areas. Kara still had her powers, but she was getting old, and her
daughter and grandchildren were only one-half and one-quarter Kryptonian,
respectively. In all of them, the genes were a recessive, getting weaker
with each generation. And unless someone travelled from Argo or Rokyn, it
was unlikely they could ever be reconstituted. It was up to the human
race to police itself now and in the future. At least there seemed to be
a surfeit of heroes now due to the event, but there were also a lot of
villians too. Especially that girl back east with the super-strength, but
she seemed to have a nemesis of her own to try to keep her confined or
controlled. Brianna hoped so anyway.
Victor decided to stay in Gotham City for a while, the better to get to
know the lovely Brianna Wayne. Of course, seeing Victor cut into her
Flying Fox time, but she managed to do both. Usually after Victor dropped
her off at the mansion, since neither of them really wished to use a limo
except for formal occasions. Usually he drove in his Lamborghini while
they went to dinner, to shows, even dressed down and went to such
activities as bowling. The two were becoming close, though Brianna hadn't
yet chosen to become intimate with him, though she knew that was coming
fast. It was the mid 2160s, and casual sex was simply a fact of life
these days.
Her Flying Fox activities were just as hectic. While she still used the
Batcave for a base of operations, she had changed it some to give it a
more feminine feel. Nothing that couldn't be changed back for future
members of the family, but she redid it in shades of various pastels.
Gang members, drug dealers, would be rapists, muggers, bank robbers-these
and more often wound up imprisoned because of her actions. One night when
she was out with Victor, it happened.
The two were just leaving a rather casual restaurant on the way to see a
movie. Being as how it was casual, Brianna was wearing jeans and a pair
of flats, so she was comfortable and able to move. Victor was wearing
jeans also and a pair of sneakers with a polo shirt. The parking lot was
half a block from the restaurant, and they were walking to it when out of
the darkness, a half dozen thugs surrounded them and demanded their money,
and it was obviously they were eying Brianna hungrily, with some other
plans for her whether the pair handed over their money or not. That
wasn't going to happen, Brianna knew she could take out several of them,
and the others would hopefully flee. She was worried about Victor though,
she didn't really know if he had any training or not. But either way, she
was going into action.
She lashed out with an Isshinryu cross-stomp kick, guaranteed to break the
recipient's knee. It did. As he went down, a shuto (chop) to the throat
finished him off. As she turned to face another attacker, she saw her
date react also. He grabbed one and threw him into the stone building
they were next to, breaking several bones and causing serious harm. Each
of them easily took out one more thug, Brianna's wielding a knife, and
when they turned to face the last two, they discovered that they were
alone. The final attacker decided to run and save themselves.
The two turned to each other and decided they needed to talk. Victor was
surprised to find the petite girl he was dating was hell on two feet,
while Brianna had some inkling that Victor was more than the shallow
aristocrat he seemed to be. Since Oliver Queen had been the Green Arrow,
she decided to tell him that she was the new hero in town, the Flying Fox.
He already knew that Batman had been HER grandfather. For them to get
together personally, professionally and in secret identities was the most
natural thing in the world. Bri took him back to her base of operations
(she didn't want to call it the Batcave) to talk, fill him in on
everything and duplicate him a costume, probably based on Oliver's, though
not exactly the same.
Victor was a martial arts master, like his grandfather was, and while he
was skilled with the longbow, he wasn't the dead shot that Oliver was. He
wasn't going to take on the persona of Green Arrow, he would have to find
some other identity and his own set of 'gimmicks'. He eventually chose
Green Ninja, the color to commemorate his grandfather, while setting
himself apart by his martial skills. Since Brianna's skills were in the
same general area, it was inevitable that the two would work together
seamlessly. Their attraction for each other only made it easier, and as
time went on, they grew extremely close. Bruce II and Victor's family
heartily approved, and eventually, Brianna gave in and realized that she
would be a woman for the rest of her life. As such, like many of the
others who had experienced gender changes, she might as well embrace it
and not spend her life alone. After several months of dating and working
together, Brianna and Victor made love for the first time. Not what macho
Bruce Wayne III had expected, but she wasn't Bruce any more. A year after
the cosmic event, Brianna and Victor became engaged, and the wedding was
obviously to be the major social event of the year, given the guest list.
Several thousand friends, relatives and business associates of both
families (a group that overlapped in many instances, major political
leaders, royalty and high clergy were in attendance, with the Archbishop
of Canterbury presiding over the service (Both of them were
Episcopalalian). The couple honeymooned on a private island owned by the
Wayne family, and moved into an entire wing of the Wayne mansion, since
the Batcave-or Fox Den-was located there. Their excuse to those who asked
why there instead of Star City was that Victor, while wealthy, wasn't in
line to inherit the majority of Queen Industries, while Brianna was going
to become majority stockholder of her familie's holdings. And the two of
them worked as a very effective team to make a considerable dent in Gotham
City's crime rate. As would their children after they chose to retire in
15 or 20 years. Of course, Brianna would be out of action at times due to
pregnancy and caring for a small child, but she wouldn't be the only crime
fighter who had to face that problem. One problem their offspring
wouldn't ever have was financial. As heirs to the Luthor, Wayne AND Queen
fortunes their family would most likely become the wealthiest in the
world.
At times Brianna did miss being a male. She had been born male and had
spent almost twenty five years as one, and especially at first, she had
trouble getting used to her new body. She missed the strength, and didn't
really get used to her cycle for a long time. She hadn't ever expected to
become pregnant and give birth (two boys and a girl) or wear skirts as
much as she had to. But she eventually did accept all that had happened
to her, and she did love Victor. Being a woman was the price she had to
pay for her power.
