THE SECRET OF PINK KRYPTONITE 2-KARA'S BIG ADVENTURE It had been a long couple of years for Kara Zor-el, aka Supergirl. It had been six years since the Thanagarian invasion of Earth, five years since their friend Kyla Vor-Kar had sacrificed herself to prevent a Kryptonite asteroid from colliding with and destroying Earth, and three years since her cousin Kal-el (Superman) had relocated to Argo City (remnant of Krypton) with his wife Lois so she could safely carry and deliver their half Kryptonian (and thus partially super) baby son, Jor- El III. A year and a half ago the dark times had occurred, with the widespread mistrust and hatred of aliens resident on Earth. Happily, that was past, though the memories were still there. A lot of her peers, especially those with non-human features were slow to forgive and forget. Several who had taken on roles as super heroes depending on their power levels had 'hung up their capes' either figuratively or literally, and taken on regular jobs, and allowed the human race to basically screw themselves. Their problems weren't the concern of most of the alien population on Earth any more. The human population, especially in the United States was learning just how much the aliens among them had been doing for them. Several humans who would have previously been rescued from various disasters had unnecessarily lost their lives or property due to non interference from the refugees. The general concensus was 'tough'. A few felt differently, including Supergirl, J'onn J'onzz, Dreamer (half human/half Naltorian) and Brainiac 5. Diana and Hal were full blooded humans who just happened to have powers, so they also continued. But the bulk of the alien heroes had quit. Kara was the most powerful of those who carried on, but even she couldn't be everywhere at once. She dearly missed her ex boyfriend, Mon-el of Daxam. Even more then him, she wished her cousin Superman was there. She missed Kyla both for her powers and because as a fellow Kryptonian, she had become a good friend to both Kara and Kal, even with her minor criminal past. Kara's patrol area now consisted of most of North America. While she was reflecting on all of this, and thinking about a trip to Argo (if she could get away) to see her cousins and mother, her attention unfortunately wandered. A meteor shower entered the atmosphere and without considering what might be hidden there, she rushed to divert the larger ones, at which she was quite successful. "Oh no, that one looks like the one that hit Kal a few years ago' was her last thought before it hit. And she was right. In fact, it was the exact same glowing pink chunk of rock that had changed Superman's gender from male to female for seven months a few years ago. And it had the exact same effect on her, just, of course in reverse. She realized that the best place for her to ride out the change was the fortress, a place she rarely visited since Kal had left. She hadn't gone there much when he was around, either, though she and Kyla (eventually) had free access to the place. She flew to the north pole, lifted the key and flew into the interior. At which point the change hit. Kara doubled over in pain, just as her cousin had. Her hair withdrew into her skull, her features coarsened, and she grew taller. She got more muscular and of course, her breasts disappeared. She also grew a male appendage in the proper place. In short, Kara Zor-el was now a man. When she got herself together from the pain, she spied herself in a mirror hanging on the wall. She realized she now looked ridiculous, as she was still wearing her Supergirl uniform. Short red skirt, blue top with a scoop neckline, red high boots with heels, earrings and makeup. She had to find something else pronto. She certainly couldn't go out in public dressed like this. A fast search with her x-ray vision turned up one of Kal's spare male uniforms. She stripped out of her female one (including her lingerie, made from Kryptonian material) and began cleaning herself up. She scrubbed off her makeup, took out her earrings and used her heat vision to burn the polish off of her finger and toenails. She changed into the new uniform wondering just how long this was going to last. Kal's uniform had the symbol of the house of El, which she was entitled to wear. Now she had to find out just how much radiation she had absorbed. Kal had burned it off at the rate of 32 KRUs a week (Kryptonite Radiation Units). She needed someone else to operate the machine. She decided to call her friend Hal Jordan, Green Lantern of Earth. He might even be able to do something with his ring, which they had not considered when Kal had undergone his change. She used super ventriloquism to call him and tell him not to be shocked at her appearance. Hal had known of Kal's change, so he wasn't particularly surprised. Kara showed him how to operate the machine, and she stepped in. it turned out she had absorbed 672 KRUs. If she burned it off at the same rate that Kal had, she would be stuck as a male for 21 weeks, just about five months. She was NOT pleased at that prospect, as she loved being a woman and this was practically the last thing she wanted to experience. And she wouldn't know the rate until at least a week. She came out with one of her VERY rare swear words. She had never considered profanity particularly ladylike, but in her new body, that didn't seem to apply. She decided that like Kal, she would take the opposite gendered form of her Kryptonian name-for the next few months she would be known as Kar-el. Hal took his leave of her, and told her if she needed any help in adopting male mannerisms and attitudes, she could call on him for help any time. Kara thanked him, and figured out her next move. There was a lot of treasure in the fortress, and she took some so she could equip herself with proper clothing and such. Her dresses and toiletries were obviously out for now-she couldn't walk the streets smelling of lavender soap or Narcisse perfume. Of course, her Kara Danvers clothing wouldn't even fit for the foreseeable future. A little more cursing escaped her lips. And it was all very feminine, though somewhat conservative in nature, especially for work. She grabbed a pair of jeans, plus a polo shirt and sneakers from a storage bin, and flew back to National City. First stop, the mall, which was a place she was very familiar with. At least, the shops that catered to professional women, plus the nail salon and cosmetic stores. She couldn't bring herself to shop at Ulta-her deceased friend Kyla had been a department manager there, and had performed makeovers on Kara and even Kala (Superman) during his experience. The one time she had gone in, she had started crying, even with her powers. The memories were just too sad for her. But she had been known to spend money at Sephora and a non chain store carrying the same types of products, plus the counters in the larger department stores. She stopped at some of the main department stores, starting at Penney's. They had a sale on jeans and polos, plus shoes aand socks. She picked up a spray bottle of Paco Rabanne cologne for men, paid for her purchases and left. She realized she was getting some rather strange looks from people, as she hadn't mastered the masculine swagger, her butt still moved from side to side in a feminine wiggle. A lot of onlookers thought this hot hunk of guy must be gay. To be honest, she (he?) didn't even give attraction a second thought. She had always liked guys, and had often had an active sex life with them, and had no intention of getting involved with a woman at this point. That left guys, and being thought gay was a complication she didn't need just then, especially as this body was only temporary (she hoped!). After leaving the mall, she stopped at the humanly inaccessible place where she stashed her apartment keys and other things, such as her clothing and purse. These she couldn't be seen walking with in public, so she stashed them in one of the shopping bags she was carrying, and walked to Kara's apartment, where she let herself in. One of the neighbors did ask who 'he' was, and why he had keys to the apartment. Kara replied that the owner had been called away on assignment for Catco, and he was subletting the apartment for about four months. He introduced himself as Karl, a friend of the Danvers family. Alex would confirm if necessary. The two parted. Kara let herself into what was actually her home and looked around. Over by the window was the rack with her work dresses, her more formal and more casual clothing was hung in the closet. The bedroom had her dresser, with drawers containing other clothing such as tanks, socks and of course, Kara's lingerie drawer. Over on the far wall was her vanity, with its large mirror and of course her cosmetics and sundries such as makeup, nail polish, perfumes and jewelry. In the closet was her shoe rack with all types of shoes including flats, sneakers and of course different styles of heels. Absolutely none of what she had in her apartment just then was appropriate for use in this male body now. She would have to store it away. All of it. With her powers, that wouldn't take long, though she decided to keep all the furniture except for the vanity, full length mirror and the scarf/hat tree. They, and bins containing all her clothing and toiletries would go into a storage facility. She could fly it all up to the fortress, but there was really no need for that. With her executive job and what she could take from the fortress, she really wasn't hurting for money. She could have easily afforded a better place than this long ago, but didn't see the need. She wasn't really human, and her ideas of comfort were somewhat different than the native inhabitants of Earth. Kara-or whatever name-he/he should go by-made her way to one of the public storage facilities with Kira's credit card, which she would need to rent a space for the time required. Other ID would be a problem, but she could change the id she had-picture, obliterate a letter from the name, change the f to an m, and so forth. She signed the contract, and decided to move everything in at about 3 in the morning. There would be very little chance of being seen at that time. She went home, packed everything up regretfully (she missed being able to wear makeup, she loved it and had fun doing it) and that morning, flew the bins to her locker and placed them inside, securing it with the recommended barrel lock. She then went home to figure out what she needed to do next. Lessons in being a man were obviously in order, just as she and Kyla had helped Kal with his transition. It was actually harder for him, since he had his male ego to overcome. Like most men, he considered females somewhat inferior (though she had defeated him in hand to hand combat for the honor of representing Earth against Daxam) and was somewhat humiliated by becoming one, and having to dress and act the part. Even with powers, that bit of male psychology had been there. Kara felt the opposite-she felt that women were by and large the superior gender, and becoming male was a comedown for her. As a woman she could give birth, a pain that no male could endure. She missed being able to do that, even though as of yet she hadn't had the experience. She had covered the Kira Danvers part of her life, with Jimmy placing her on assignment overseas (officially at least), and now she needed a cover story for the missing Supergirl and the new costumed hero taking her place. Especially since he was wearing a Superman uniform. The 'friend from the future legion' wasn't going to work. She decided that Supergirl was taking a sabbatical on Argo City, and a resident of Argo would take her place for several months. It was convenient having a planetoid full of Kryptonians ready to help her out when necessary. This was one of those times. She wished she really could live on Argo for a while, but she had tried that and it didn't work. Too calm and placid. But she was still happy that there was a city full of her people that was preserving Kryptonian culture-two if you counted Rokyn, Kandor locked in another dimension. Between the two, it was possible that her planet could rise again, hopefully without making the same mistakes they had the first time. The criminals locked in the Phantom Zone didn't count, except for a very few like Kyla, who had been trapped there by the explosion, but should have been released. Argo was working on a replacement for the zone projector to rectify things, but they hadn't completed it yet. Krypton better rise again-there were a few hundred thousand Daxamites still roaming the spaceways, and would be happy to exterminate any Kryptonians they came across. Argo was the most vulnerable. She called her friend Brainy (Brainiac 5 from the future legion) and suggested they get together with Jonn for a drink at the alien bar they frequented at times. He (Kara had decided to use that pronoun for now, since it was appropriate) and to use the names Kar-El and Karl exclusively until the radiation wore off. Her two friends were only too happy to talk with her and help her develop male mannerisms. They walked in, and were immediately checked out by the alien clientele. Brainy and Jonn were known quantities, and were left alone. Kar-in this body-wasn't. He was wearing earth style clothing-jeans, a golf shirt and sneakers. He'd been here many times, of course, with many of her friends including Kala (Superman during his change) and of course Kyla. She had been known to be the wildest partier and best dancer among the regulars. While Kara was sitting with her friends (pronouns can get confusing!) she had one of the most embarrassing experiences of her life. Rimborians were extremely forward and their planet was somewhat primitive in many ways. Technologically, they were on a par with the rest of the space-faring worlds, but emotionally, they hadn't progressed much past their distant warlike and feral ancestors. They were also generally extremely attractive and quite libidinous. If they saw someone they wanted, they went for it. The black haired Rimborian girl saw a tall, blonde haired Kryptonian and decided that he was just what she needed to keep from being lonely that night. Or for a few others after it. Over to the table she sauntered, swinging her hips invitingly and ensuring that her top was sufficiently low cut and partially open. She introduced herself as Serena Ajo-Nah, which made Brainy start. He had a friend who was a fellow legionairre from Rimbor named Jo-Nah. This could be an ancestor, or at least a branched family member. She came on to Kar in a manner that left no doubt about her intentions, and even sat on his lap, suggesting he buy her a drink. Not knowing what else to do, he ordered her an Arcturian ale, which didn't bother him at all with his Kryptonian physiology. Unfortunfately, if affected Serena somewhat differently. She actually began dancing in a manner that hadn't been seen since a certain earth princess had asked for a prophet's head almost two thousand years ago. Any normal male would have immediately taken her up on her offer, but Kar still had heterosexual female instincts. He wasn't aroused in the least, which caused some of the patrons to wonder if the newcomer was gay-or whatever it was called on their homeworlds. And on some of those homewowrlds, that particular orientation was considered a grave sin, with the death penalty prescribed on at least one represented world. While no one wanted to tangle with a Kryptonian, they weren't going to go out of their way to be friendly, either. Noticing that the big Kryptonian male wasn't responding to her advances, Serena employed her most effective mating weapon. Rimborians had the ability to emit powerful pheromones, guaranteed to attract the attentions of the opposite sex. Even Kryptonians and Daxamites weren't immune, and Kar was no exception. The symbol of his/her temporary gender began to respond in the usual way for human and humanoid males, and the two of them retired to one of a set of rooms on the second floor set aside for just such activities. Serena, due to her proclivities in that area actually had one permantly reserved for her and her conquests. The two spent approximately an hour there, with both of them feeling satiated at the end. Serena had enjoyed the most powerful climaxes of her life (and she had experienced many!) due to the strength and endurance of her Kryptonian partner. Rimborians were not in the 'super' class, but they were tough enough to enjoy this activity with someone who was. She did. The two returned to the main bar area, hand in hand. When Kar-El got home that night, with the chemicals worn off, she slipped into Kara mode, which mentally she still was and felt totally diagusted with herself. Not that she personally had anything against same sex relationships, since her adopted sister Alex had come out as lesbian several years ago, and her friend Nia (Dreamer) was a Transwoman, but she herself was solidly heterosexual. It felt weird, since she was still attracted to males, even in this body. Yet acting on that would make her personally gay at the moment, though sex with another woman had made her feel as though she was acting as a lesbian. She was totally confused. She couldn't wait for the effects of the pink kryptonite to wear off so she could have her old body and orientation back. She missed being able to look pretty, also. She liked wearing skirts and playing with her cosmetics, trying to achieve new looks, both appropriate for dates and for the office. She had learned a lot from her deceased and heroic friend Kyla, and she missed the girl terribly. On the super hero front, she continued on with Supergirl's patrol area, now attired in the blue and red uniform of Superman, with the symbol of the House of El blazoned on her (now flat) chest. That was another thing Kara missed. She made rescues, stopped criminals of all sorts, prevented a nuclear reactor from going critical, and acted as any other super hero of her power level did. She decided to avoid the alien bar- Serena would be there, and she had no intention of resuming a sexual relationship with her. Either way, doing so felt weird. She did go out on occasion with her male friends Hal, Brainy, J'onn and even Bruce Wayne (Batman). In uniform, Bruce was an extreme alpha male, and was afraid of nothing. It was pretty inevitable that someday, he would face a vastly superior foe and go down fighting. Supergirl actually had quite a crush on him, and often wondered what a relationship with him would be like. While her cousin was obviously more powerful, Bruce had much more of the alpha male attitude, without being sexist or needing to put women down in any way. She didn't know it, but he had absolutely no qualms about marrying a super powerful female, it wouldn't affect his ego in any way. He was that secure. While the two of them had always been friends, and were now so more than ever, neither of them discussed a more permanent relationship. Right now, Kar-El wasn't going to. Especially with Batman. Every week, either Hal or J'onn would accompany Kar to the fortress to test the radiation levels still remaining in her body. Even though she had decided to use male pronouns, she still found it4 difficult after over thirty years of being a woman, and still thought of herself as Kara Zor-El, female, Supergirl. She wasn't about to change. Also every week, the radiation wore off at a steady 32 units per week, and now after eleven weeks of being stuck in this male form, she was down to 320 more units. Kal had stayed completely female until the change back occurred, so she felt that the same would happen for her. Being stuck in an androgynous, hermaphroditic or inbetween form would be difficult, if not impossible. No way could she continue to patrol and serve the world if that happened. Unfortunately, the annual Alien Convention was held that year during the period of her affliction. She tried not to miss it, though for the last few years it had brought back sad thoughts of Kyla, who had attended with her and Kala, and done their makeup for the formal ball. That wouldn't be necessary this year, obviously, and in this form, she would be wearing formal Kryptonian mens robes and a headband, worn by Kryptonian Citizen males. That was a tradition that had dated back to almost the dawn of Kryptonian pre-history, when the primitive planet had been invaded and subjugated by aliens. It had actually been one of her ancestors who had devised the use of headbands as weapons, and led the revolt that had overthrown the tyrants. The El family had been one of the most honored on the planet ever since then. Very few had sullied the name, the most infamous being Kru-El who was still confined in the Phantom Zon, and would be for a long time. The convention went off as it normally did, though this year there was discussion by the attendees of petitioning the United Nations for their own Island or other area, where they could be with their own kind (more or less). Many, especially those from the United States still had angry feelings about Ben Lockwood and the other government bigots who had made their lives so difficult. Others had already found ways to leave the planet, deciding that the humans were on their own from now on. Kar was with those who decided to stay on earth, and continue to protect their adopted world. At the ball, he danced several dances from different worlds with a few of the human and humanoid female attendees, none of whom knew who he really was-a super powered woman just like them, only suffering from a severe form of radiation poisoning. For a few more weeks. One thing Kar continued to do, even in this form was work with her sister Alex, who was currently directress of the DEO, a top secret government agency that protected the planet from alien menaces. For a while, Supergirl had been consideed a menace, especially during the period that 'Red Daughter' had been on the loose, since she exactly resembled the girl of steel. Adding to her troubles was the fact that the president of the United States was actually an agent of Lex Luthor, her cousin Kal's oldest enemy, and probably the most dangerous. In addition to being absolutely brilliant in all areas of science and engineering, he was also totally ruthless, willing to kill as many innocents as necessary (or more!) to accomplish his goal, no matter what that goal was. He was now an implacable enemy of Supergirl. Red Daughter was neutralized, and Kara had been exonerated, but he was still dangerous. Kar just knew that between Luthor and the mission of the DEO, something was going to happen any time. Given how her life had been going for the last several years, she felt it was inevitable. She wasn't wrong. One of the most dangerous criminals locked in the DEO's containment cells was a humanoid named Mano. He was a mutant from the planet Angtu, which wasn't there any more. He had been born with an anti-matter disc in his right hand, which could disintegrate anything. He used his abilities for crime, and eventually used them to actually cause his home planet to explode, nurdering billions. The atmosphere had been highly polluted, due to a total lack of environmental regulations on the planet's industry. They could do whatever they wished, since the industrialists controlled the planetary government, and manipulated the laws and tax codes to benefit themselves. Off planet, Mano had to wear an environmental suit, since he could only breathe in an atmosphere highly contaminated by heavy metals. He had made his way to the alien society on the planet Earth, where he had continued his criminal behavior. Hal ordan (Green Lantern) had tried to capture him, since there was a galaxy-wide Guardians warrant out for him. He failed, since Mano's suit was yellow, which no Green Lantern ring could affect. The job fell to one of the Kryptonians. Since she was based in National City, Supergirl had taken the mission. She had procured a skin hugging force field, since Mano's touch would kill her, too. Worse than Kryptonite. At least with that she would have had a chance to escape. Due to a short, localized power failure, only affecting his cell, suffice it to say Mano managed to escape, killing several DEO agents along the way. He made his way to the outer wall, and used his hand to burn through it. Alex realized that she couldn't do much against such a monster, so she naturally called her sister. Currently her brother, though they didn't let anyone else in on the secret. With only a few weeks left before the radiation wore off (she hoped!), Kar-El whooshed into the DEO headquarters. A few seconds of ovservation with xray and telescopic vision, plus a quick warning from Alex let her know what was going on. It also didn't take long for the fugitive to be located-super vision and super hearing saw to that. Unfortunately, the force shield Kara had used the first time had burned out, so she couldn't depend on its protection a second time. She had to be careful, one touch from his right hand and Supergirl would be no more. She needed a plan. J'onn couldn't help, but perhaps Hal could. A green lantern couldn't capture Mano due to his suit, but perhaps a force shield created by the ring? It was worth a try. Kara called him using her super ventriloquism, and of course, being the hero he was, as well a a friend, very soon a familiar sight in a green, white and black uniform appeared. Hal readily agreed to help her in any way he could, and of course used his will power to create a glowing green force shield that hoperfully would provide enough protection for her to complete the job. Even though Kara was physically male, she had come to the conclusion that her identity was in her mind, and in her mind, she was still completely female. And quite soon she hoped, physically female once again. She didn't know how men handled all the testosterone surging through their bodies, with all the rage that it produced. She had discovered in the last weeks since her transformation that her first impulse was to use her fists to solve most problems violently. She couldn't wait for the pleasant sensation of estrogen taking over her emotions once again, even though she couldn't exactly feel the hormone, she was comforted by the effects. She absolutely hated being male. Kara thanked her friend, and flew to Mano's location. Hal had offered to come with her, but she insisted that it was too dangerous for him with the yellow suit the criminal wore. Hal aquiesced to her request, and flew back to his own base of operations. When Mano saw her, he prepared for battle. He was aware of the significance of the green glow, and decided that he would try to wrestle, then slipping his arm through the screen to kill her. Actually him, as he recognized the uniform and S emblem (he didn't know the actual meaning of the symbol). He just knew that a Kryptonian was on his trail, and while he was quite strong and agile, he wasn't in the same class as his adversary. The two squared off. The hand to hand combat lessons Kara had taken with Alex came in handy. Mano wasn't a trained fighter, so he consistently led with his mutated hand. Kara had no trouble grabbing the outstretched limb and using a ju-jitsu throw to foil the attack. She then followed up with an attack of her own, this one more reasoned and thus, more effective. The one thing she couldn't do was shatter his helmet, which would cause him to choke to death, due to the relatively non polluted nature of Earth's atmosphere. After several minutes of close combat, she finally scored with a crushing side kick to Mano's ribs, putting him out of action. Most heroes would have continued fighting even after suffering such an injury, but Mano wasn't a warrior-he was a cowardly criminal and bully. He depended solely on his hand and its power, not from anything inside himself. This ensured his defeat for the second time by Kara. Years before he had been captured by the police of a planet he had terrorized and been sentenced to have his hand amputated-in deep space, causing his death from decompression. He had received a pardon in return for aiding in the elimination of an ancient weapon drifting in space, and at the time heading for the most populated region of the galaxy, absorbing the energy from every star it encountered. It also destroyed them. Even with his pardon, Mano returned to his vicious ways, it was all he knew. Kara, on her own decided that Mano was too dangerous to leave on Earth, even the DEO special cells couldn't seem to hold him. That left two choices. Three if you included execution, which she wouldn't do. She could turn him over to the Guardians (Hal's masters), or she could use her prototype Phantom Zone projector to relegate him to the zone. Since she had captured him on Earth, technically she didn't need the permission of the Guardians. After checking with Alex, since she was Director of the DEO, she opted for the latter. With Mano still restrained, she aimed the large red projector at him and pressed the black button, which caused him to fade out and reappear in the zon, exactly as Kyla had so many years before. She didn't know when, if ever he could be released, but to her it didnt matter. Upon taking her station as a priestess, she had automatically assumed her Kryptonian noble title, and the authority that went with it. She was also the eldest El on the planet Earth (the only one actually) so her actions were legal under Kryptonian law. She felt a glow of masculine pride at having vanquished so dangerous an opponent in personal combat and seeing him safely locked away. And best of all, she only had a week, by her calculations, left in her transformation. She couldn't wait to get back into a skirt and take a trip to the nail salon! During the last week Kara decided to treat her friends to a night at the alien bar in National City. She decided to wear Kryptonian casual clothing this time, in green with her family symbol emblazoned on the chest. She, Jonn, Brainy, and Dreamer walked in and took a table. Naturally Serena was there, as she had taken over Kyla's role as the main party girl. She made a bee-line to the table and attempted to seduce the handsome Kryptonian a second time, but surprisingly, it didn't work. Brainy had devised a serum to counteract the pheronomes Serena produced, and Kar had taken it. He agreed to dance with her, but flatly refused another trip to the back rooms for a tryst. Kara was still a straight girl at heart, and even with male equipment, really couldn't bring herself to be intimate with another girl. Eventually, Serena went off in search of more responsive company, which she found in a Braalian (the lightning planet). Two days before her scheduled change, she made preparations to resume her old life. She moved her clothing and furniture from the storage facility to the loft, and flew to the fortress, where she would stay until the time arrived. With her she took her Cabooddle (in a light blue, she had carried her makeup in it since middle school. It was a little juvenile for a thirty something, but Kara loved it) and her Supergirl uniform and appropriate / and lingerie. She couldn't wait to change back into it, fix her face and polish her nails after the change had finished. She wanted to be a girl. To her surprise, a figure in a blue uniform flew through the fortress door . Her cousin, who knew exactly what she was going through had taken a pod to earth for the sole purpose of helping her through the retransformation. At the proper time, she began to feel a twinge of pain, again, worse than an exposure to Kryptonite. She doubled over in agony, Kal holding her. Her hair lengthened, her features softened and she shrunk several inches and regained her curvy form, with her breasts reforming and the male appendage disappearing as it should.
