Back in the 1950s public high schools were co-educational, but most
elective courses were segregated by gender. Only girls could take home
economics classes, and only boys could take shop classes. Typing,
however, was open to both girls and boys. Mostly girls enrolled in
typing, encouraged by mothers who wanted them to become secretaries
until they found a husband, though a few boys always signed up as well.
The typing teacher at Evelyn Arden High School in Plaidville, Ohio was
Miss Clawstroke, a strict disciplinarian with a reputation for being not
particularly welcoming to her male students. When Jimmy Midlander took
Miss Clawstroke's typing class he found himself one of three boys in the
class. To Jimmy's left was Billy "The Sissy" Sasshower, a shy,
effeminate boy who still hadn't figured out his own sexual orientation
(though it was obvious to everybody else at the school). To Jimmy's
right was Tommy "The Spaz" Sprezmeyer, who managed to get by despite
exhibiting a variety of physical and mental disabilities. Jimmy, Billy
and Tommy didn't know it when they enrolled, but they were about to
endure the most uncomfortably humiliating class they would ever take.
The problems started one day when an announcement came over the
intercom. "Teachers, please excuse all boys who wish to try out for the
baseball team," Miss Clawstroke remarked with her typical deadpan
expression, "I don't think we'll have that problem in this class." There
was a little nervous giggling from the girls, and some outright laughed.
Jimmy was shocked, and Billy and Tommy blushed with embarrassment. "How
dare she?" thought Jimmy. "I can play baseball well enough to be on the
team. Who is she to say I can't?"
The next incident happened about a couple months into the semester.
"Class, I see your speed and accuracy is improving, but you still need
to get a lot better," said Miss Clawstroke. She held up a tube of
lipstick and declared, "by the end of the semester, whoever is the
fastest, most accurate typist will receive this prize!" One of the girls
raised her hand and asked, "But what if the winner of the contest is a
boy?" Miss Clawstroke smiled. "Well, in the very unlikely event that
happens I'm sure I can come up with a more suitable prize." Again Jimmy
fumed with anger. "I'll show her!" he thought.
The next day, as Jimmy walked through the hall he heard a voice call to
him, "She is so mean!" Jimmy turned to see Darla Goodwin from Typing
class. "Hi Darla. Yeah, Miss Clawstroke makes me so mad. I wish I could
win the typing contest just to put her in her place." Darla smiled. "I
know how you could win that contest! My mom is a secretary and she's as
fast as they come. She could coach you!" Jimmy looked unsure. "Well, I
don't know..." Darla reassured him. "It's okay. Just come over to my
place after dinner. She'll be happy to help."
Sure enough, when Jimmy came over to Darla's house that night her mom
was happy to help. "Darla told me what happened and I think it's just
dreadful that that awful Miss Clawstroke treats you boys that way." Mrs.
Goodwin looked just as pretty as Darla, but older and with a thicker
body. "If you're serious about winning that contest I can help. But you
must come here every night and get serious about practicing." Jimmy
looked earnestly at Mrs. Goodwin and said, "Yes ma'am. I will. Thank
you." "Yay!" cheered Darla.
For the next couple months Jimmy practiced and practiced, and with the
help of Mrs. Goodwin his fingers were soon flying with dead-on accuracy,
even on the number keys. On the day of the final test he felt fairly
confident he would be the fastest in the class. The next day, as Miss
Clawstroke passed out the graded tests, one of the girls asked, "Who won
the contest?" "Contest?" asked Miss Clawstroke. "Oh yes, I'd almost
forgotten." She paused. "The fastest typist was... Jimmy Midlander." The
class applauded, and Darla shot Jimmy an A.O.K. sign. "What's his
prize?" asked one of the girls. "Prize?" said Miss Clawstroke. "Oh
yes..." She pulled out a new tube of lipstick and placed it on Jimmy's
desk. "Instead of Spring Rose, here's Sunset Cherry. It suits your skin
tone more." A couple girls laughed, but the rest were silent. This was
just so degrading that it seemed wrong. Billy and Tommy slunk down in
their seats as if they too were being humiliated. For the remainder of
the class Jimmy couldn't concentrate on anything but his furious anger.
After the bell rang and everyone left Jimmy remained. He walked up the
aisle to Miss Clawstroke's desk and confronted her. "How could you do
that? Why are you so mean to me?" he asked. "Why am I so mean?" she
asked back. "Let me explain. You are a boy. You will have any number of
opportunities to earn a living when you leave here. But what about the
girls? The ones who don't marry? How will they support themselves? By
typing, that's how. And every time a sissy boy like you takes a typing
job, that's one less job for a girl. It is you who is acting cruelly and
selfishly." And at that she slapped Jimmy across the face. Smack!
Jimmy was so shocked, he did the only thing he could under the
circumstance. He cried. "I though so," said Miss Clawstroke in disgust.
Just then the door opened, and there stood Mrs. Goodwin, who had been
watching the whole thing from the window. "How could you stoop so low,
Edna?" "Oh give me a break, Doris," said Miss Clawstroke. (Later Jimmy
would wonder how Mrs. Goodwin and Miss Clawstroke were on a first name
basis.) Mrs. Goodwin walked right up to the front of the class and
punched Miss Clawstroke right in the face. Pow! Miss Clawstroke went
down. Mrs Goodwin pulled her up and sat down with the dazed typing
teacher over her knee. She pulled up her skirt, exposing her buttocks
and instructed Jimmy, "You take that tube of lipstick and shove it right
where the sun don't shine!" Jimmy grabbed the lipstick, pulled down Miss
Clawstroke's panties, and inserted the tube into her anus. As the tube
disappeared, the tip of Jimmy's index finger went in too, until he
quickly withdrew it. "Now, slap her in the face," said Mrs. Goodwin. But
Jimmy just couldn't. "I'm sorry, but I can't." "That's okay, Jimmy,"
said Mrs. Goodwin. "That just shows that you are a good boy with
compassion, something lacking in this piece of trash."
The next day, which was the last day of school, Miss Clawstroke came in
with gobs of makeup on her eyes and cheek, trying to cover up the dark
shiner from Mrs. Goodwin's punch. She didn't say much that day.
After school Jimmy asked Darla, "Your mom didn't tell you what happened,
did she?" "No," said Darla. "She said it was best for me not to know.
But she said that she thinks you are a nice boy, and that if you ask me
to the dance I should say yes." "You would go to the dance with me?"
said Jimmy incredulously. "Of course! I'd be thrilled to take you!"
That night at the dance Jimmy and Darla had a great time dancing. At one
point the band stopped playing and the principal stepped up to the
microphone. "Before we go on, I'd like to make an announcement.
Congratulations to Jimmy Midlander, winner of the fastest typist award."
Jimmy smiled and waved at the crowd as they cheered and applauded. Tommy
shouted, "Hooray!" and Billy gave the embarrassed Jimmy a quick peck on
the cheek. Darla gave Jimmy a big, sloppy kiss on his other cheek, and
as she stepped back a yearbook photographer snapped a picture of the
smiling Jimmy. Darla's lipstick marks could be clearly seen on Jimmy's
cheek in the picture.
