Chapter 1
The week before school vacation is always a tough week, but for the large
Finn Family this 2nd week of February was the toughest. It started with a
wedding but quickly turned into fear and anxiety as two members of the
family went into premature labor. Marcus Quentin Sylvester, the elder by
one minute, was alright but Brent Louis Jones, the younger of the two, was
in very real danger.
Brent had trouble breathing and was on the small side for babies at his
state of gestation. The doctors were adamant that he was going to be
alright but his complications still caused anxiety among the family.
Hardest hit were Neil and Faith Jones, Brent's elder siblings. Even acting
mature at ages 9 and 7 they were still children at heart.
Neil and Faith were sensitive to the plight of their brother. They were on
the small side as well and Neil endured years of torment from bigger kids.
Seeing their brother so tiny and helpless in the pictures their father had
shown them caused memories that they had hoped were forgotten since they
officially moved to Winnisimmet seven months before to reappear.
Not to be outdone, their cousins Scott and Jessica Nelson, were also scared
for Brent. The two knew that their family had a long line of health related
issues that culminated in Scott's birth mother Tiffany's untimely death
from cancer when the two were 8-years-old. Tiffany's death led to Scott's
birth father spiraling out of control and badly abusing him, forcing him to
bully other kids. Both knew full well that had they not gotten him away
things would have led to Scott's arrest, trial, and incarceration for rape
at the hands of a corrupt judge and sheriff.
That was three years before and a lot has changed since then. Scott is a
new man, Jessica emerged from her shell into a caring young woman, and both
have fallen head over heels in love. Jessica's only regret is that her
birthday is always going to be synonymous with Scott fleeing from his
abuse. It was a small price to pay in her eyes but she hoped to have some
stronger, better memory to replace it.
Scott and Jessica weren't the only teens with concerns. Michael Finn
refuses to ever acknowledge his biological father's existence but couldn't
deny his familial connection to the Jones family. Brent is his cousin and
seeing him struggling and with Michael being helpless to do anything about
it was causing the sensitive Michael pain and anguish. His tough guy fa?ade
was crumbling and even his girlfriend, Courtney Lawrence, couldn't bring
him out of his funk.
The three teens and two youngsters were in pain and the adults were unsure
how to help them. If not for an offhand comment from Beth Herman they would
be spending their vacation wallowing in pity and anxiety. But Beth's joke
about sending them with Karen Smith to visit England was just what they all
needed and what's more, Neil and Faith were two of the only people who
could make their friends Daisy Peterson and Ethan Smith calm themselves and
enjoy their trip.
The five Myers/Jones children were told about the plans. Michael was
reluctant to go but his mother insisted that he needed to get away for the
week. His sister Jaimie pointed out that she had their sister Cat to look
after and his brother Miles had their brother JD to look after so there was
nothing that he was going to be able to do with everyone else busy that
week.
The one person who was least affected by Brent's issues was Deborah
Peterson. She enjoyed her role in helping the family and volunteered to
drop off and pick up Neil and Faith from school and watch them so their
mother Sarah could be at the hospital with Brent. Deborah was at the point
of knowing all the parents by name as Faith and Neil introduced her and the
other parents talked about her.
By Thursday Daisy and Faith's teacher, Ms. May, wasn't pleased with the
duo. She accused them of making up stories about their vacation especially
about staying with a lord and lady. She didn't believe that they were going
anywhere especially with it being common knowledge that Sarah had given
birth that previous Sunday making a trip impossible.
Deborah tried her hardest not to laugh at Ms. May but when she insisted
that they stop lying Deborah tore into her with a quick, "It's not a lie,
in fact it's the truth. They are the guests of Lady Karen Smith, close
friend of my mother-in-law and unofficial aunt to the kids. Karen's in-laws
are an actual lord and lady as is she, her husband, her sons, and her
daughters. I myself would have been joining them except my husband and I
are using this week of privacy to enjoy our honeymoon."
Daisy grinned and added, "We will be sure to bring back pictures." Faith
added, "If you don't believe us after you see them then there's nothing
more we can do." Deborah just shook her head in disbelief and walked away,
knowing that her mother-in-law was going to get an earful from Ms. May over
Daisy's talking back to her but the woman needed to be dressed down.
Mr. King, Ethan and Neil's teacher, was alright with the kids' eagerness.
He was pragmatic and knew a good thing when he saw it, especially with two
of his favorite students. He was hoping to use them to further their
lessons in the next few weeks. He asked for some store signs showing grams,
kilograms, milliliters, and hopefully kilometers. Ethan grinned and told
him he'd try his best but if need be he'd bring back a bag of crisps or
bottle of fizzy drink or fruit squash.
Their parents packed their bags while they were in school so there was no
need to rush home after school that Friday. Deborah had their passports at
the ready and when she showed them to Lilly she grinned. Tanya York
examined them and in front of the other parents asked if Lord and Lady
Smith were ready for the influx getting a sneer from Daisy and Faith's
teacher followed by a snide, "Well sorry madam if you think the children
are lying but given that I helped packed the teens' suitcases this morning
while their parents were at the hospital I can assure you that it is no
joke and what is more these kids are getting a preview of what they would
be seeing this summer anyway. I just hope that my son doesn't have you next
year as you have proven to be both ignorant and insulting to the children.
How you could have been hired in the first place is almost beyond belief."
Tanya didn't pull any punches, she loved the kids and saw them as true
nieces and nephews to her. Her son Virgil was upset that he wouldn't be
able to play with his friends during the week and hoped that they would
bring back something special for him. She had some plans for him involving
the girls and younger boys but it still didn't matter to him, he was going
to miss his two friends.
Lilly just grinned at her, adding a swift, "Word will get around about your
actions towards the girls, and it won't be pretty. And before you say
anything to make them look bad for Ms. Prince she already knows both girls
intimately as Faith's brother is a student in her school. It helps a lot to
have mutual friends particularly ones who have known her for decades. My
brother-in-law John is interested in hearing all about their teacher and
what he has been told isn't sitting well. Just be glad that he hasn't
personally visited you about the two girls yet..."
Tanya and Deborah snickered at the John Finn's name drop. It was crude but
it was the truth, John wasn't in the mood for letting someone abuse his
beloved younger girls especially someone in a position of power. Faith was
just seven months removed from Neil being bullied in her old school and was
still vulnerable, while Daisy was still bitter over the revelation of the
ill treatment Kylie Pena received at the hands of her former kindergarten
teacher the year before. He wouldn't be pleased and if her hunch was right,
their teacher was on the outs already.
The kids were dropped off at the Smith home much to their delight. Neil was
already there, having gotten a ride from Karen. Michael, Scott, and Jessica
came along a short time later, the trio dragging their bags with them after
giving their parents tearful goodbyes with Cat and JD hugging Michael
tightly as he left.
Michael was uncharacteristically quiet as they sat around eating an early
dinner. Nigel Jr. kept trying to hug him for attention but he just shrugged
it off, hoping that he wouldn't press him too much. Karen picked up on his
anxiety and whispered to him, "You may not think you need it but you do
need it. He's part of your life even if he never acknowledged your
existence. Your cousins all need you and you need them."
Michael finally gave in and hugged Nigel who promptly grabbed him tightly
and refused to let go of him. Karen snickered, the boy was just under a
year old but could tell when someone else needs a hug. Ethan and Nichole
grinned at the sight, Michael slowly started to look less stressed even if
his fa?ade was just as tough as ever.
David Peterson met them at the airport. He had to fill out some paperwork
and ensure that his weapons were stored away safely in the weapon's locker
which took several hours of his time cutting his shift short. He checked
over his bag as the family met him to ensure that nothing was taken that
shouldn't be and ensure he wasn't forgetting something. Deborah had checked
his bag for him and added some new things he forgot like extra underwear
and socks which she left a note telling him next time he forgot his
underwear she was packing bras and panties for him getting laughs from his
mother and cousins.
He complained about having to take two suits but Michael cut him off.
Michael informed him that it was going to be a requirement that they have a
formal dinner with the Smiths especially given he was considered by them to
be a hero for saving Ethan. He also added that they were probably going to
have at least one meal at the US embassy with their unofficial great uncle
Walter so he would need it at least two suits just in case something
happened to one.
David was able to get them through the TSA checkpoint fast as the TSA
supervisor knew him well and personally opened up a line just for the 13.
The crowd behind them were upset at their special treatment but the
supervisor kindly informed them to stuff it as they had several small
children who were flying due to a hardship and needed to get through. There
was no more arguing as the delay was starting due to the complainers' own
action, the family just walked through without setting off any alarms and
were on their way.
Daisy and Faith clung to their dolls tightly as they waited for their plane
to be called. Daisy had only flown twice before, but that was for a funeral
and not for a vacation. Faith had only flown three times, only going
between Kansas City and Boston. They were both scared and excited as they
awaited the plane to be called and hoped that it was a fun trip.
The teens were silent. Their various teachers had given them a lot of
homework with John giving them a special assignment that catered to their
destination. Looking over the plans for the week he told them to get some
pictures of certain places but didn't tell them too much, hoping to let
them do much of the guess work themselves while adding to the assignment.
Their plane was called and the group were allowed to board first. There was
some complaining but as the special guests of a VIP and having small
children helped allay and complaints especially as the girls were starting
to fall asleep. Almost as soon as they got into their seats they were out
cold.
The three girls sat next to one another with Nichole in the middle. David
was forced to sit between the two boys which, for him, was a good thing as
they too nodded off giving him extra room. Michael and Scott sat with Lilly
between them while Jessica and Claire had Karen and Nigel Jr. between them.
The teens kept busy working on their homework for an hour before falling
asleep. David, Lilly and Karen fell asleep soon after. The group only woke
up when Nigel started to stir and quickly followed by the flight attendants
announcing they needed to buckle up for landing. The kids quickly stowed
their laptops and iPads and buckled in with Nigel Jr. getting big grins for
waking them in time.
Faith and Daisy were a bit scared of the landing. They were told stories
from other kids in the class about plane crashes which their teacher seemed
to ignore while chastising them about their talk of visiting England.
Nichole calmed them down by telling them about being on multiple plane
trips and nothing bad happening so they should be alright as well. This
calmed them but Lilly took note along with Karen that their teacher needed
a dressing down fast.
The group was the last to leave the airplane as Karen felt it best to let
everyone else off first. They took longer than expected in customs as Karen
got funny looks and was questioned more intensely when she mentioned she
was visiting her in-laws and where they lived. Nichole rolled her eyes and
explained calmly, "She isn't lying nor is she joking. My grandparents are
titled lord and lady as are my siblings and parents. Only I lack a title in
my own rite but I am still the daughter of an Earl and a lady."
Ethan added, "Just because she is American does not mean she isn't a
titled. Our new country may not recognize titles but she is still a
Countess and still deserves your respect." Karen smiled at the two
defending her while the teens tried their hardest not to laugh as the
customs officer's colleagues found out that none of them were lying and in
fact there was a photo of the four Smiths with their relatives during the
Christmas wedding announcement.
As they were waived through Lilly whispered, "Does that happen a lot?"
Karen grinned and politely told her, "More than I'd like but it's
entertaining to see them realize they made themselves look like fools. I
don't blame them, far too many Brits look down on us Americans but it could
be a lot worse. At least the kids aren't being hassled by them anymore. The
house cleaning that Harry's gang forced on the various agencies helped a
lot."
The group walked out and were immediately greeted by Emma Walker, the Smith
family junior maid. Karen hugged her deeply while Ethan and Nichole grinned
at her, snickering at something that they shared with the other teens. Emma
turned to greet the two youngsters and was met by David's gaze.
The two locked eyes on one another and were silent as they tried to find
the right words to speak. Karen and Lilly broke up the stalemate by putting
their bags in the Smith Estate's Land Rover and walking with Emma to rent a
9-passenger van. She softly told Emma to remember that he was only visiting
for a short time but added that if she was serious in her feelings for
David then she would support Emma moving to the US to study so they could
continue their relationship.
Emma blushed at that and thanked her, Karen knew that her son and daughter
were the ones to set this meeting up and would get an earful when she
returned. Emma was professional as they returned with the rental van and
Karen smartly had Emma and David go together with the teens while she and
Lilly took the kids. David grinned at hearing that while the teens
snickered. Lilly was the only one who was oblivious to what was going on,
not realizing that Karen had just set up David for a three hour long talk
with Emma.
David drove, telling Emma that he had driven around Lincolnshire before and
remembered much of the route. Emma was relieved to not have to drive and
sat alongside David as they drove away from the airport. The teens kept up
conversations, discussing schoolwork while trying to not think about where
they were and what they were going to do that week.
Emma and David were surprisingly into the same things. They loved the same
music, the same books, even the same artwork. Emma listened intently as
David talked about his schooling and police career, getting a bigger
picture of what happened outside of the information that the Smiths had
given her.
The teens whispered to one another about David's reaction. Claire could not
stop staring at her David's face as he talked with Emma, it was a side of
him that he had never shown and one that almost matched Patrick after he
and Deborah realized they had feelings for one another. Michael was the one
to finally admit, "David and Emma are falling for one another. I just hope
they can make something work, he needs some female companionship." Claire
blushed while Scott and Michael burst into laughter as Jessica added, "And
some sex wouldn't be so bad for him either."
Emma and David were oblivious to the laughter in the background, focusing
on talking with one another while noting the location so they could stop
for a restroom break and top off the petrol tank. Scott noticed how they
never broke eye contact as they chatted while filling the tank with Jessica
pointing out, "That's exactly how you look whenever you and Stacy aren't
locking lips."
An hour later the van was pulling into the village of Barnstead then
driving down a long country road to the Smith family estate. Lord and Lady
Smith greeting them as they exited, each smiling as they looked over the
teen. Just as they pulled in Karen parked the Land Rover and greeted the
Smiths with hugs and kisses. She made the formal introductions of Lilly,
David, and the teens while apologizing for the six younger kids being
asleep.
David carried the boys in while Jessica carried Faith, Claire carried
Daisy, and Scott carried Nichole. Michael complained about carrying the
bags getting a swift, "You are carrying the most prized possessions" from
Claire. Michael shot back, "Your clothes and makeup aren't prized
possessions" getting a laugh from Karen and Lilly.
The maids took the bags off Michael with him insisting on carrying his own
bag. Karen whispered them, "He doesn't trust anyone with his personal
items, Hannah pulled a couple of pranks on him when we were in England
before." That was enough to get them to back away with knowing nods and
smiles. They respected Hannah and understood her mischievous side at times
after having it explained to them by Karen and Nigel Sr. back during their
last visit.
The kids were brought up to their rooms. Daisy and Faith were going to
share a room with Nichole while Neil shared with Ethan. The teens would
have their own rooms to give them some privacy and space. The kids were
sound asleep and the teens, while running on fumes, were still wide awake
and not going to sleep anytime soon. They put their clothes away and went
back downstairs to the lounge.
Lord Bradford Smith looked over the four teens with a sense of suspicion.
He didn't know how to react to seeing young males who weren't in polo or
button down shirts and slacks or young girls who weren't in skirts and
blouses or dresses. They were all in t-shirts and jeans. They were in good
condition and laundered but still not what he was used to seeing.
Lady Ophelia Smith on the other hand was happy to see the teens. She
understood why they were there and could tell they were close to Karen.
Looking closely at Claire she could see a strong resemblance to Karen that
she had to find out about. Karen said Lilly was her, "Sister" but it didn't
seem like they were actually related, she wanted some more information.
Karen looked over at Lilly and nodded. She broke the silence and announced,
"I can tell by your looks that you are seeking answers. Yes, it is true
that Lilly and I aren't sisters but before she says anything my mother
treated her and the other mothers like daughters while she was alive and
she has been like a sister to me since we met. Like all the adults in our
family she is called 'aunt' by the children but to John's, Leslie's,
Willie's, and my children she is 'aunt' because of another reason."
Taking a deep breath she proceeded to tell the Smiths, "My brother Roland
is both Claire's and Daisy's father. He slept with and abandoned Lilly and
Daisy's mother. Lilly was lucky in that she found a man named Jerry
Peterson who fell in love with her despite having another man's baby. She
adopted his two older children, Patrick and David, as her own and raised
them alongside Claire. Just over two years ago Daisy's mother died and she
was dropped off in Boston by her mother's pimp and taken in by my sister
Leslie as her foster daughter until we could figure out the truth about her
family. A few weeks later we found out that her mother is Jerry's ex-wife,
the woman who is the birth mother of Patrick and David. Daisy was adopted
by Lilly and to hide her true parentage from people outside the family
Valerie's parents adopted Lilly as their own daughter."
Ophelia asked softly, "Is this why she looks so much like you?" Karen
blushed while Michael told them, "That's it exactly. Aunt Karen takes after
grandpa Brent while dad and Aunt Leslie take after Grandma Catherine. All
of the Finns have the same nose, cheeks, and chin but only Aunt Karen,
Daisy, Claire, and Uncle Roland have the oval face and high forehead and
skinny bodies. Dad and Aunt Leslie have rounded faces and stockier bodies."
Bradford noticed that he didn't include himself there. He asked why that
was. Karen looked over at Michael who turned to Bradford and Ophelia and
told them, "Dad isn't my 'real' father. The man that fathered me was called
Lance Jones and dated my mom until he passed his bar exam then dumped her
leaving her pregnant and alone. He hasn't earned the title of 'dad' or
'father' only 'sperm donor."
Karen interceded before Michael could get any angrier by telling them,
"Lance's younger brother is Faith and Neil's father Mick. Lance is in
prison for the next 15 years for his attempt to stop John from adopting
Jaimie and remove her from his care after the truth about her gender change
got out. He was caught altering evidence, using stolen records, falsifying
documents, and ignoring legal rights to get John removed as Jaimie's
guardian. John was the closest thing Michael had to a father before he fell
in love with Valerie and he gladly adopted Michael as his own just after
John legally adopted Jaimie and then married Valerie."
Ophelia asked about Scott and Jessica and was told, "They are Neil and
Faith's mother Sarah Jones' niece and nephew. Do you recall back in October
when I told you that Ethan would be among people who understood his
situation? I was referring to Scott. Like Ethan, his mother Tiffany died
when he was eight and soon after his father was abusive towards him. Nearly
three years ago he was removed from his father's care and forced to flee
east along with Jessica to start a new life among our family in
Winnisimmet. Greta, whom you recall is my boss, and Quentin adopted him as
their own son after a few months. Tiffany was Greta Nelson's twin sister
and she promised to look over Scott once she was gone just as I promised
Sammi that I would take in and love Ethan as my own."
Bradford and Ophelia looked closer at Scott and Jessica and saw the strong
resemblance. They favored their mothers, whatever features Scott had from
his father were muted just as Jessica's resemblance to Quentin was muted.
The couple realized that Karen was right, the family fully understood Ethan
and he was well in good hands with them.
David realized what was coming and made an excuse to get up to leave but
was stopped by Lilly. Karen sat him down with a thud and announced, "If you
think you are getting away without your proper due you're mistaken." David
could tell from the looks on his cousin that he was beaten and had no way
out.
Bradford asked what was going on. Karen smiled and told them proudly, "If
you recall again the whole Jeffries situation? Well he wasn't apprehended
normally. He managed to kidnap Ethan after having his goons stopped by
Neil, Kylie, and Nancy. They were about to board a flight out of the US
when David caught sight of Ethan and alerted every officer and trooper in
the area. He got two customs officers to stop Jeffries while backup came
and got close enough to prevent Jeffries from doing anything while Ethan
was walked away from Jeffries' sight."
David tried to appear as small as possible but Ophelia gave him a big hug
and kiss on the cheek. The others snickered but stopped as Karen glared at
them. Ophelia sat him down and wouldn't let him move from her, David
insisting, "I didn't do anything, I was just standing by. The other two did
all of the work and had him set to be removed without a fight."
Nigel Jr. started to stir in Karen's arms which was the cue to everyone to
get ready for the other five waking up. David took this as an opportunity
and silently slunk up to his room to spend a few moments alone before the
inevitable knock on the door from his mother and aunt.
The group gathered for a small meal while the children woke up one by one.
Neil and Faith were startled until they realized that they were with Daisy,
Nichole, and Ethan. The trio looked around the room with Daisy telling
Nichole that it was pretty bare while Neil grinned at some of the toys
Ethan had left behind.
The five walked downstairs to the dining room and greeted the Smiths with
Nichole and Ethan giving them hugs and kisses. Bradford looked over the
trio and saw Daisy was the spitting image of Claire and Karen while Neil
resembled Michael. Faith though had him puzzled until Lilly quietly told
him, "She takes after her mother who herself took after her own father. She
is as much as Myers as Scott and Jessica but more so than Tiffany and
Greta." This caused him to nod in agreement, understanding now what she
meant.
Ethan spoke first, saying, "Sorry for not greeting you Grandfather."
Nichole did the same for Ophelia. Both grandparents just smiled and told
them warmly, "It's not your fault." Ophelia added, "You are children and
traveled through the night and lost several hours of sleep so you would be
expected to be exhausted. Well you are here now and ready for a good meal."
Chef came in and announced that lunch was served. She had a grin on her
face which Karen could tell meant they were getting food that the kids
would be familiar with. She had sent Chef a listing of what the kids
normally eat and they came to an agreement on what to feed them, Karen and
Lilly had subtly gotten Daisy used to some British foods like curry and
chicken tikka masala and thankfully for them Faith was usually over their
house when she made the food while William Kelly made the food frequently
for their friend Junior as both picked up a liking for the food after
trying some.
Bradford teased the kids, asking if they were ready for haggis, black
pudding, or mushy peas. The girls instantly cringed while Michael laughed,
asking, "Any kippers or some steak and kidney pie?" Bradford stopped then
looked at Michael who grinned, telling him with a big grin, "Who do you
think got Hannah so put off of curry?"
Bradford shook his head as Ophelia snickered. Karen rebuked him adding
sharply, "You are still owed a plate of haggis and after that joke I think
John will enjoy ensuring you try some when you are up in Scotland. Maybe
I'll have him make scrapple- it's the closest we can get in the US."
Michael's smirked disappeared as Bradford chuckled, he liked Michael
already and it had only been just two hours.
The group settled into the dining room table as chef brought in the dishes
piled with rice and pigeon peas. Lilly looked over at Karen for an
explanation but Bradford was the one to explain, telling her, "It was
Chef's suggestion. She got the recipe from Hannah last August and felt it
was best to give the kids something they were used to."
The kids were pleased with Michael feeling foolish for thinking the worst.
Bradford asked about the dish's significance to which Michael told him,
"It's just a normal dish that the Puerto Rican residents of the city, like
our Great Uncle Jorge, make. It's become tradition that every member of the
family gets treated to it their first time meeting him. It's also tradition
to refuse to eat it whenever dad makes it."
Michael's comment got both Ophelia and Bradford to ask, "Why" causing all
12 to say in unison, "It's terrible!" The only one to not say anything was
Nigel Jr. who just laughed at the reaction. Chef herself started to laugh
as Ophelia recalled Miles' and Reid' similar reaction. Karen added a
solemn, "Bless his hear, but John just can't cook the dish right. No matter
how hard he tries he just can't get the spices right or the rice dry enough
or anything to work out how he wants it to."
The kids ate in silence while the adults made small talk. David revealed
his plans for the few days that he was in town and was surprised to hear
that Bradford was willing to go with him. Bradford didn't fully trust the
officers after what happened to Karen the previous August so he wanted to
ensure that what he was trying to do was taken seriously. David accepted
his offer, but was still cautious.
The kids finally finished and were told to go to their rooms and rest as
they had a couple of hours to go before they had to change for dinner.
Bradford had a nice welcoming dinner planned with some close friends and
acquaintances. Ethan, Karen, and Nichole knew were going to be for his
benefit but were also told that Ladies Honoria and Mabel would be there as
well which Karen smiled at hearing.
Upstairs the kids made calls to their friends. Sadly for Ethan and Neil,
Junior was unavailable which prompted the boys to go over to Michael's room
while he was in the middle of sending a call to Reed Pena and Miles. The
two teens answered and it was clear that they were battling a laughing Cat
who immediately sought out the iPad from them getting her talking while
Reed rushed off to the bathroom and Miles put JD down for a nap.
A few minutes later Reed took the iPad off of Cat's hands and told her to
get to take her nap getting her to complain but comply with his orders.
Reed was happy to inform them that they did what nobody else could do, they
broke her concentration and got her to stop acting up. Michael just
shrugged it off and asked about their day so far, hoping to think about
something else.
Miles was clearly tired while Reed was showing signs of strain. Reed told
Michael about his trip to Connecticut on Monday while Miles told him about
getting a daytime date with Christina, Rick, and Jaimie. Michael sighed and
asked about Courtney getting a sly grin then a fast, "Jessie and Jenna are
taking her shopping down in Wrentham then up in Rockingham. And before you
ask, Stacy is helping Aunt Melanie all this week at the day care. Mom is
helping out as well, Aunt Tanya finally got her certification from the
state so she can be a teacher instead of assistant but they still need
someone to help out for the week due to Aunt Leslie being on maternity
leave."
Scott came in just as he was talking about Stacy prompting Scott to grin.
She had told him about that and added a warm, "Aunt Melanie thought that
Deborah might be able to do the job but mom and dad refused to let her do
anything this week while she has the chance to be alone with Patrick." The
two younger boys tried not to snicker but Michael promptly told them,
"Whatever you two are laughing at is too much for you to even know about so
stop laughing or I'm telling Aunt Sarah and Aunt Karen." Both stopped
immediately.
The teens talked about the plans for the week with Miles and Reed both
offering suggestions for what to do. They asked Ethan if he was going to
take them to The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight which Ethan smiled at
remembering. Scott asked what it was about getting Ethan to tell him about
the exhibits and planes. Michael shook his head at hearing that, with Scott
adding, "He knew we would have to go there didn't he? Dad just wouldn't let
us not visit it!"
Ethan nodded, but added a warm, "He knows I like planes and that's the
closest place with planes. It also specializes in the Battle of Britain so
you can stop there for a bit before David takes us up to York. He thought
you would enjoy a quick stop there before seeing the more famous city.
It'll save you a lot of trouble and help see some of the things firsthand."
The girls came in and asked what was going on to which Scott told them that
John had manipulated them into visiting a site nearby that all would enjoy.
Claire groaned at hearing that but knew that Ethan and girls might like it.
Nichole simply asked, "Does this change what we are doing?" getting a
quick, "No, it only gives us reason to go to a venue closer to us."
Miles told them the bad news- they were missing out on a big snowstorm.
Scott told them sharply, "Will had better not slack off" while Jessica
added, "And make sure Eric doesn't overdo it." Reed giggled until Miles
told him, "Laugh it up, but who do you think is going to end up helping
clear out Aunt Sarah and Uncle Mick?" causing the others to laugh at his
new duties for the week.
Chapter 2
The chatting took up about an hour before the twins woke up from their nap
prompting Reed and Miles to sign off quickly. David walked by and asked
what was going on getting a joint, "Change of plans" from them. Karen and
Lilly were told about what they needed to do getting the two to shake their
heads and grin at John's subtle manipulation. He was slick but he meant
well and knew that Ethan would need to do something he enjoyed as much as
them. She had already planned for Neil to do something he'd enjoy while
David took them up to York on Tuesday.
Karen ushered everyone to their respective rooms so they could change. She
instinctively told Daisy and Faith to let Nichole help them while turning
to Jessica and Claire to tell them, "Go easy on the makeup. It's a formal
dinner, not the prom. These people have high opinions of themselves and low
opinions of others especially we Americans, there will be comments about
your looks and I'd like them to be tastefully respectful, not scathing."
The two groaned at that but knew to basically just add lipstick, mascara,
and eyeliner. No eye shadow nor blush, just the basics to accentuate their
natural looks. They'd need some concealer to cover some of their blemishes
but were otherwise feeling naked without some of their extra makeup.
Neil looked over his suit with Ethan and asked, "Why do we have to wear
these?" Ethan didn't bat an eye as he told him, "It's a formal dinner with
grandfather's friends and associates. Be glad it's not tuxedos and gowns."
Neil grumbled, "At least it's not dresses" to which Ethan snickered, "Don't
say that or Faith and Daisy will make you wear one!"
This set the two off. Emma came into the room to check on them and heard
the joke, adding, "You would look nice in a peach and cream dress" which
caused Neil to blanch and say, "I'm not wearing a dress no matter what
anyone says." Neil turned away in tears and went through his clothes to
ensure there was no dress causing Emma and Ethan to become concerned.
Ethan hugged him and calmed him down, telling him, "It was only a joke. You
know nobody would ever do that to you. The bullies at your former school
might but nobody you really know would." Emma added warmly, "I was only
teasing you, I wouldn't let anyone do that to you especially if you didn't
want to."
Karen walked in to check on the boys and saw Neil's tears prompting her to
ask what was going on. Ethan was chastised for teasing Neil knowing full
well it was still a sore spot for him. Ethan felt horrid but Emma soothed
things over, helping Neil while Ethan finished quickly.
Jessica and Claire were finished ahead of schedule and helped Nichole,
Daisy, and Faith get dressed. The three youngsters wanted to wear makeup
too which prompted a small argument to which Lilly had to intervene and
side with the two teens. They were allowed to wear some lip gloss but
nothing else.
Lilly herself was decked out in a formal dress that Karen and Valerie found
for her. It was calf length, bright blue, and showed off her shoulders
while hugging her trim figure. She was stunning. The girls were speechless,
it was the first time they had ever seen Lilly looking so beautiful and
that included all of the weddings the family had attended.
Jessica and Claire were wearing similar dresses that went midway between
their calves and feet while accentuating their natural curves and in the
case of the three younger girls making them look older while still showing
a hint of being young girls. Lilly took pictures of all of them together
then ushered the boys into the room to take pictures of their suits. The
boys weren't too keen to be seen in suits but they appeased Lilly if only
to get out of there quicker.
The kids finally had enough of dressing and waited for Karen to finish
dressing Nigel Jr. The only one missing was David, who came out of his room
complaining about them packing his uniform when he was supposed to be off
duty. The girls snickered as Emma looked at him oddly but didn't let on
that they knew where his suit really was.
David finally got dressed and came out to see the others. Emma's heart
flipped over when seeing him. He was rugged, handsome, and buff. Claire
whispered to her, "He's single you know" getting a subtle nod from Emma as
she was practically drooling over David.
Emma excused herself to check on the status of the guests and quickly
returned to announce the arrival of all of the guests. She then cautioned
Karen that Lady Camille had come getting the teens to silently nod to one
another. Karen whispered to them, "Don't do anything unless she does and
even then use your best judgment. She can play mind games and make you look
bad in front of the Smiths, but you guys are better than her. You know how
to humiliate people by just being honest."
Emma grinned, she hoped that Camille would get a taste of her own medicine
and knew the kids had sharp tongues but never insulted anyone who didn't
deserve it. None of the staff liked Camille and those that did were the
ones that were kept far away from the family as possible. She treated the
staff like slaves and despite warnings to the contrary she acted like they
were her own servants not just the Smith family's servants.
Emma led them downstairs with Karen behind her. The girls were in the rear
with Nichole while Ethan stuck close to Michael. Ethan expected some stares
and gossip about him but was happy to have Michael ready, willing, and able
to talk down to anyone bold enough to insult him behind his back.
Ophelia and Bradford called everyone to attention and announced the arrival
of the family. Bradford introduced them as Karen's sister, nieces, and
nephews and offered little other details about their true relationship
except to say that they were hosting the family as a thanks to David. David
looked over to Bradford and realized that he was trying to sway any talk
about Brent for the sake of the kids and had to be the sacrificial lamb to
the assembled crowd.
Bradford took David to his closest friends and explained what David had
done for Ethan and what would have happened had he not stopped them. Ethan
and the others kept close together and walked to the side, staying in the
line of sight of Ophelia while trying to keep out of discussions. They were
mostly successful with Nichole and Ethan talking for brief times with
friendly people they both knew wouldn't gossip nor bother them and who were
keen to say hello to them.
At some point the two got separated from the group while talking with their
grandfather's closest friends. Michael and the girls heard a woman
complaining about Ethan to a woman, openly saying, "The bastard got himself
adopted by my nephew. The boy still believes that he is a legitimate member
of the family and that he is entitled to everything. I don't know how my
sister puts up with this charade, I'll see to it that he is run off before
he ruins the family name!"
She turned to Lilly and started to say, "My spies tell me she is a single
mother. She has all of those children with her- clearly she must be
receiving government support! How my sister could ever allow such horrid
people inside her home is beyond belief. They should be removed from her
care, not allowed to stay with such antiques. Ophelia had better take
inventory after they leave so to ensure nothing of value was stolen by
these cretins!"
Daisy and Faith loudly asked, "Is that Lady Chameleon?" Michael nodded his
head, telling them just as loudly, "Her name is Lady Camille, but given her
penchant for changing her appearance depending on whom she is talking to
you are right in calling her that." Michael glared at her and waited for
her to say something, the woman she was talking with realized that Camille
had stepped out of place and spoken ill in the presence of the wrong
people.
Camille was insulted by Michael's statement. Michael in turn told her
bluntly, "You just insulted my aunt without knowing a single thing about
her. Further you insulted a nine-year-old boy who has done nothing to you
at all in his entire life. Why? For petty jealousy? To get back at Aunt
Karen and Uncle Nigel? You have no reason whatsoever to gossip so horribly
about my cousin especially while speaking ill of his poor deceased mother."
Camille looked like she was going to say something but saw Ophelia making
her way over and thought better of it. Michael continued on, "And for your
information, you sorry excuse of a human being, my aunt is a widow and
gainfully self-employed with more money at the ready in her savings account
than your husband has in all of his properties, stocks, bonds, and
investments. That information came from Lord Young himself, who sadly isn't
here tonight to keep you in line."
He glared even deeper at her adding, "The real reason both myself and my
four cousins are here is due to my youngest cousin, the baby brother of
Faith and Neil here, is fighting for his life as we speak and our family
thought that it was best to have us do something away from the hospital
this week instead of being on edge for a week. So yes, Aunt Lilly is caring
for all of us- but she isn't the mother of all of us. She is only the
mother of three, the eldest of which is standing right behind you and not
in the best of moods about you insulting his mother."
Camille turned to see David staring angrily at her. Michael continued on,
"Just in case fools like you felt the need to insist on continuing the lies
about Ethan's deceased mother Sammi, our family had his DNA tested and he
is 100% the son of Lord Harold Smith and as the eldest non-adopted
legitimate male who is also in-line for the title in his own rite he is the
rightful heir of the Smith estate and titles. He has put up with your
antics already but this is about as low as I have ever seen someone stoop
to. I have seen people reject family because of prejudice and ignorance but
never because of sheer jealousy. You have no other excuse for disliking
Aunt Karen, Uncle Nigel, or my cousins Nichole, Bryan, Hannah, Nigel Jr.
and Ethan except for pure jealousy."
Claire shook her head and added, "It's pretty bold to insult someone and
their children when you aren't even a mother yourself. Is that what this is
all about? You can't have children so you need to belittle the children of
someone who isn't able to defend themselves anymore?" Daisy looked at her
with disgust and added, "You are one bad lady."
Ophelia had a big grin on her face and proudly told her, "Michael, Claire,
and Daisy are Ethan's first cousins through Karen. You have seen how sharp
witted and unafraid of you Bryan and Hannah are, well those three are just
quick to defend their family. I'd ask you to leave but I can already tell
by the anger brewing up inside you that you were going to leave anyway. It
is always a pleasure dear sister, I do hope Alistair isn't too upset when
he hears about your 2nd strike against the family. You can already guess
what he will do when you receive your third strike."
Bradford called Michael over just after Camille left in a huff. Michael
expected the worst and tried to apologize but Bradford insisted that he did
exactly what they expected him to do based on what Bryan and Hannah had
done. He also added, "Hannah warned us that you were even more sensitive of
Camille and her actions than either she or Bryan. Your father raised you
well, you did your family a service by protecting them and standing up to
that woman. I only allowed her to come because she is the last of Ophelia's
family but seeing how she is around Karen and the children I would rather
she stayed away for good before she steps over the line and actually tries
to harm your cousins, especially Nigel Jr.."
Bradford introduced Michael to his business partners, each of whom shook
his hand and slapped him on the back. Bradford was proud to tell them,
"This young man is the person who caused the collapse of the Boston firm I
told you about last summer. He found a terrible fraud perpetrated against
his father's account that resulted in the theft of hundreds of thousands of
dollars from his father's friend. That, in turn, caused the removal of the
whole account as well as setting up the firm I am proudly using for our
estate's US operations."
Michael tried to act coy but Bradford insisted he sit with them. The
discussion was simple and to the point, directly about stocks. Michael
looked at the companies discussed and promptly told the men, "You are going
after the wrong companies. Those are going to take a big hit soon as their
numbers are inflated and the associated businesses are doing poorly this
quarter."
Bradford asked him to elaborate to which Michael showed them some figures
that only seemed to be unrelated but when shown what they dealt with and
news regarding them the men saw exactly what Michael meant. He then pointed
out a few key companies that were due to have a bump in price and told them
boldly, "I may only be 16 but I have been right almost 95% of the time. You
are safe with those companies; they have huge growth potential even in the
volatile UK market."
Bradford told the men the big secret, "Michael here has turned several
thousand dollars into over $1 million in just over two years. He and his
Uncle James have been doing quite well and as you can see he understands
the market better than some of the top analysts." Michael added a
nonchalant, "It's just simple math and logic, if they bothered to take the
time to actually analyze trends and figures they would actually make people
more money. But since they don't they are just sitting around in offices
and conference rooms and letting their minions do the work for them while
they rake in the profits from transaction fees and not really caring much
about making their clients a profit."
Ophelia and Lilly were watching Michael in action and when he had the small
group in his thrall Ophelia asked what it was all about. Lilly smiled and
told the truth, "Michael is a gifted stock market analyst who has made
almost $1 million from his investment. He hasn't touched his trust funds,
all the money he made came from his own wages saved from his summer job."
Karen added, "He found his calling just like the other teens. Jessica is a
born social worker while Scott is a natural architect. I believe Claire
would be a good veterinarian if she wasn't so focused on Will and helping
the other girls." Lilly nodded, adding, "She has always loved animals and
is great at biology. Will is going to be either a firefighter or a police
officer from the way he hangs around Paul Douglas and Todd Flynn when he
isn't work or watching his brother."
Chef finally alerted Bradford and Ophelia that it was time for dinner. The
family was sat at the head of the table while the children flanked them on
both sides. Nichole and Ethan were the buffer between the family and the
guests with Neil being by Karen and Daisy and Faith by Lilly.
The guests seemed to gather that the children were not to be considered
secondary to the adults especially as they were guests of honor. With Ethan
and Nichole being placed between them and the guests they were to not be
questioned during the meal. Ethan and Nichole were reluctant to talk at all
while eating, focusing on the rich cuisine that Chef had made and happy to
inform Scott, Jessica, and Claire about the dishes while Michael kept quiet
as re tried to remember what was in them.
The soup was a simple watercress soup which the kids didn't think too much
about. The main course was beef wellington which the kids enjoyed
immensely. The dessert of spotted dick brought smiles to the kids as they
thought it was going to be something else but turned into a sweet treat
which the girls enjoyed. Karen and Lilly both told the teens, "Do not
mention this to Will" getting grins from them as Karen had to explain, "He
is a joker who will not hesitate to make it into a big joke. We love him
but he can be extremely immature at times."
The dinner ended and there was some small talk in the lounge. Bradford got
David to follow him to endure the onslaught of questions about his role in
saving Ethan. Bradford made David into a big hero but David countered with
the proper credit to the customs officers.
David finally had to explain why he was in uniform. Bradford burst into
laughter as he explained, "My mother and sisters must have thought it would
be funny to hide my suit and force me to wear my state police uniform for
the dinner. I'm not sure I am allowed to wear it especially outside of
country but it was either wear this or wear a t-shirt and jeans and while
Lord and Lady Smith are hospitable even they would draw the line at their
guest wearing something so casual to a formal dinner."
There were loud laughs as David's confession was thought to be a joke.
Bradford smiled and patted him on the back, telling all that he was there
to assist the local police service with their computer program and had his
utmost respect. The guests shook David's hand and left with nods and simple
congratulations and thanks for his service.
The kids were by now wearing down and it was time to put them down for the
night. The teens were feeling it as well and once the last guests had
departed the family called it a night. Karen and Ophelia talked for a bit
to clarify plans for the week with Emma being assigned to escort the group
up to York while Karen would take the girls over to one of the skating
rinks.
The other days they would play it by ear. Karen was sure that Michael would
decline a trip to London due to the planned locations having already been
visited. Ophelia was alright hosting him for the time and if her hunch was
right Bradford would benefit from his being there. The one wildcard was
weather, there was snow expected and the roads would be tough. Karen told
her they would be fine spending a day on the estate if it snowed as it
would mean they would have to work on their schoolwork and get used to the
place before the July wedding. They were also used to driving in bad
weather so it would be just like home.
In the morning the kids were well rested and enjoying themselves awaiting
the adults to fully wake up. The girls were playing with their dolls with
Nichole using one of the dolls that she had left at the estate back in
December. The three never noticed Karen and Lilly peering into the room nor
did they see Ophelia being waived at to come watch the girls.
Ophelia's heart melted at the sight. Nichole was playing along with them
without a care in the world, enjoying the chance to be a little girl and
not a prim and proper young lady that she was expected to be. After several
minutes of watching the three slunk away, quietly exchanging smiles as the
others started to stir and make noise.
Out in the hallway Ophelia asked, "Is she always like that?" Karen nodded,
adding, "Kylie, Nancy, and Margaret normally play different kinds of games
with their dolls but they are perfectly fine playing the house with the
three younger girls. She knows how important it is for Faith and Daisy to
feel at ease so she is acting a little younger than normal with them but
she is still a young 10-year-old girl at heart."
The boys came out to look at the adults talking. Ethan asked what was going
on to which Ophelia smiled and told him warmly, "You mom was just telling
me about the girls playing." Ethan nodded, turning back to Neil to get
themselves showered and dressed.
The boys tried to figure out what was going to be done that day and finally
came to the agreement that they would run then ride horses. Ethan asked if
Neil had ever ridden before, getting a look of pure shock followed by, "I'm
a city kid, mom and dad never had the time to do stuff like that." Ethan
shook his head and added, "You can learn easily, Hannah and Paige did."
The teens were the last ones to wake up. They spent little time getting up,
just showering and dressing. Claire and Jessica were the first down
followed by Michael. Scott was teased about taking forever getting a quick,
"Did you save any water for the rest of Lincolnshire?"
Scott looked over at Karen who shook her head. Scott was actually doing
something special for Jessica, but what he did wouldn't be ready until
later. Karen warmly told them, "We have an easy day today so he's just
taking his sweet time. Tomorrow things get busy."
Down in the breakfast room Bradford saw the kids and teens dressed in a mix
of sweat pants and loose t-shirts. He didn't say anything, just asking
Nichole and Ethan, "Riding?" Both nodded, to which Ethan adding, "After our
run. I don't know what the girls are going to do while we are out."
Nichole added in, "Jessica and Claire are going running with them. We will
go out walking. Daisy and Faith are too small and slow to keep up and I
don't like running." The girls nodded in agreement while Jessica and Claire
grinned at the guys. Ethan just shook his head, knowing they were about to
have an impromptu race.
Chef served up breakfast, a full English as she called it. Michael told the
others, "It's better than it looks although the beans can be a bit of a
strain. Don't ask what some of the things are, they taste better than they
look. It's not that bad compared with some of the stuff dad tried to make."
Neither Daisy nor Faith were too pleased with the food. Karen suspected
they wouldn't like the meats and normally didn't eat eggs so she told Chef,
"The girls will have muesli". She nodded and brought out two bowls with
milk for the girls. Karen explained to them, "It's like granola. You have
eaten it before; your uncle likes to have it on the weekends."
The girls dug in while the older kids looked on in surprise. Karen
snickered at their reaction, Ethan asked, "When did dad start eating that?
He never mentioned that it was muesli before." Nichole gave the same look,
Karen smirked as she admitted, "We keep some boxes separate for ourselves.
Faith and Daisy happened to catch him eating it and asked to try it. Now
that you know I guess we are going to have to get some more."
The meal continued on in silence as Bradford and Ophelia were both
surprised and happy that the two had pulled one over on the kids. Once the
meal was over the teens, Ethan, and Neil grabbed sweaters and started to
stretch. Nichole, Faith, and Daisy simply grabbed their hats and jackets
and got Lilly to get hers as well so they could go out for their walk of
the estate.
The runners left with the girls telling them to be careful. Ethan led the
way with them all filing in behind him. Nichole the led the way for the
walkers with the group stopping off at the pond, the dock on the stream,
and the stables. Lilly was barely keeping up but enjoying the walk as the
girls talked freely among themselves without fear of saying or doing
something to upset Ophelia and Bradford.
David was the only one without anything to do. He went to the lounge to
look over his notes then started to work over his presentation slides.
Bradford looked on with keen interest, David was doing some interesting
things that were almost simplistic yet a huge step forward.
A half hour later the runners returned, each worn out and needing a short
rest. They changed into jeans while Ethan and Nichole changed into their
jodhpurs. Daisy asked why they were wearing those and got a simple, "We
normally wear them while riding. Your jeans are fine, we are just used to
wearing these. Even Paige and Hannah wore them."
Daisy and Faith were thrilled. Lilly had Ethan and Nichole direct them to
the stables where she took charge of the group. Ethan and Nichole
introduced them all to Marion Paine, the groomsman and riding instructor.
Looking directly at Claire and Daisy he gasped in shock, asking pointedly,
"Please tell me these young ladies aren't like Lady Hannah. I don't think I
could survive three of them."
The group burst into laughter as Daisy wasn't impressed. Claire shook her
head and added, "We aren't that bad, but I think you might want to avoid
our cousin Cat this summer." Ethan and Nichole both smirked and added,
"True" prompting Marion to say he was going to have to put in for holiday
when she came there.
Marion spent the next half hour teaching the three youngest and Claire how
to on and off the horse, how to adjust what needed adjusting while also
ensuring that the others remembered what they had learned before. The three
were keen to listen and for once Daisy was at a loss for words as she
listened to every word Marion told them. She had no choice but to listen,
she badly wanted to ride the horses.
Watching from a distance, Karen told Bradford and Ophelia why the others
didn't need instruction. She shook her head in sympathy as she recalled,
"Michael, Scott, and Jessica were raised together as their mothers were
close friends. One of the few things they did together was ride horses.
This stopped after Tiffany died, Scott's father refused to let him do
something so 'feminine' while Valerie and Greta tried to fight back their
shared grief."
The kids were enjoying themselves with Lilly being an excellent rider
herself. David took a break from his work and looked on in wonder at his
mother, Karen asked where she learned to ride to which David told her how
his dad used to take her up to a stable on the North Shore and ride one of
the bridle trails. He grew solemn explaining how it stopped his dad's
workload got too heavy and they couldn't find a babysitter for them after
their grandparents died."
David started to laugh at remembering the last part. He looked at Karen and
boldly told her, "Mom never thought to look it up but when grandma and
grandpa died their estate was split four ways for their grandkids- we never
knew who the fourth one was and mom didn't think to ask!" Karen slapped her
head at that, David shook his head in wonder as he explained, "We should
have checked. Sheila got the fourth share. It was right in front of our
faces the whole time and we didn't see it. But we found her in the end and
she is happy to have herself a sister and cousins."
Bradford's interest was piqued. David grinned as he explained, "Parents and
my aunt and uncle worked out of the same building in different divisions.
When my aunt and uncle moved when the office was moved to a different city
they eventually grew distant as their jobs required more and more time and
devotion. This meant that we never interacted and mom never got to meet her
in-laws. We only found out that Sheila was our cousin because of some
horrid things happening to her friend that Sheila ended up getting caught
up in as well."
Before they could ask David added, "Deborah, that's her name, is
transgender and angered some of the girls on campus because she had the
best rooms in the dorm. They got their family to leak personal information
causing her to be outed and then orchestrated a vicious attack on her. Had
it not been for Uncle John, Patrick, and I she may have been killed. After
she was all but forced to flee school due to threats she and Sheila moved
in together then were forced out due to more threats and an arson attempt.
That's when Claire noticed a resemblance in Sheila to Patrick and I and got
some clues that pointed to Sheila being our cousin."
The Smiths were enthralled so David continued, "Sheila lost her job and her
home but she found us. Deborah though did something incredibly stupid."
Karen shook her head as the Smiths looked on and as, "What did she do?"
David grinned and admitted, "She married Patrick. The two had the hots for
one another for over a year but never tried to get closer. He finally told
her how he felt then accidentally proposed and married her in under two
weeks officially."
Ophelia was laughing now. Bradford was unsure what to feel until Karen
added, "Hannah mentioned her a few times before. Sheila is the librarian
friend and Deborah is the poor tormented girl with no family who worked
with her. Well she not only found family in Patrick's family she also was
lucky enough to be reunited with her long lost mother who just happened to
be a longtime friend of Valerie and Greta and John."
David went back inside as Ophelia smiled at seeing her grandchildren trying
to ride the horses. Nigel Jr. was the only child not out there trying to
ride, he was content to sit with Karen and his grandparents. When he grew
bored Karen took him inside to which Emma took him up to the nursery and
played with him until he fell asleep for his mid-morning nap.
The riders traded horses every so often with the younger kids getting most
of the riding done. Michael wasn't too keen to ride, he was more than happy
to help Neil and Faith get on and off the horse but only rode for a short
time himself. Scott tried to tease him but slipped trying to get out of the
saddle earned him a laugh and quickly quieted any teasing he may have
wanted to do.
Claire proved to enjoy it better than the others, in fact she was a decent
rider which her mother took great pride in seeing. She was also interested
in the horse herself, empathizing with her and taking a few minutes to get
to know her. Lilly saw the natural animal lover in her to which Jessica
softly whispered, "She wasn't sure if she should go for veterinary science
or not." Lilly added a swift, "If she doesn't she is wasting her natural
talent. She's good with animals, I just hope she doesn't let the idiots in
your school tell her it's not what she should be doing."
After a total of two hours and many sore muscles the riding ended. Claire
eagerly helped Marion feed and groom the horses while the others relaxed
their aching muscles before heading inside to shower and change. Marion was
pleased to have the help and after a quick talk with Lilly he was thrilled
to have played a small role in helping Claire down the right path towards a
career.
Inside their rooms, the kids showered and changed. Lunch was served as soon
as the last stragglers, Claire and Jessica, came down. There wasn't
anything planned for that afternoon so the teens were instructed to work on
their schoolwork as the next few days were jam packed with activities and
plans.
The teens were the only ones that had work so they gathered their back
packs and laptops and started in on their assignments. Nichole went
upstairs to the nursery with Faith and Daisy and played with the toys in
there as well as with Nigel Jr. Neil and Ethan went to Ethan's room and
started up his video game system and began to play whatever games Ethan had
on hand.
In the lounge, Scott noticed a model of the estate laid out in the corner.
Bradford was asked about it only to give a curt, "It's just a failed plan
for a pool. We can't get planning permission to alter the house nor can we
find a proper place to put the pool that won't be noticed."
Scott smirked and told him warmly, "I actually have a project coming up for
my digital drafting class and this could fit the bill. My father is an
architect and he has worked on some old estates with much more serious
issues, I think we can find a solution that works for you. If you have the
original and subsequent renovation blueprints for the building I know I can
find a way to solve your problems."
Jessica added, "He's been trying to find the right project for months. He
knows what to look for in the designs." Bradford was reluctant to agree but
felt it was worth a shot if only to appease the teens.
Scott walked outside with Bradford and started to take pictures. What he
saw caused him to grin widely. Scott asked about a small building among the
brush not far from the rear of the building to which Bradford hadn't the
slightest clue about its use or origin. Scott boldly told him, "That right
there is where you build the pool. It's large enough to for it and if you
connect it to the former basement door that was covered up it will be
unnoticed and no actual alterations to the building will have been done."
Inside Scott found the plans he needed. Bradford examined them and was
astonished to have never noticed the door before nor did he know about that
the storage building among the trees was once a servants' quarters. It was
large enough for the pool and with an upper story would also be able to
house additional workout equipment. It was perfect for their needs.
Bradford had the groundskeeper clear a path to the entrance then had his
builder alerted about the project ideas. Scott went over some preliminary
designs then had Bradford place a call to the planning commission with his
ideas. By the time they were done they had spent three hours working and
had much of the work done. Bradford was eager to thank Scott but all Scott
asked was for some pictures of the project as it was underway and a
statement that he had done the work with Bradford.
Michael, Claire, and Jessica had to fight their laughter as Scott was so
entrenched in his work that he never noticed how much had been done without
him. Michael looked at his finance homework and shook his head in disbelief
that he had done more without the theories and equations than his own
teacher had done in his private sector life. Claire and Jessica had to
fight the same boredom as their accounting work grew to be too easy after
having much of it explained by Reed and their Aunt Beverly.
The only one who wasn't bored was David. He was deep into his presentation
to the point that he didn't notice Emma offering him tea and a snack. David
finally stopped when she tapped on his shoulder. He looked up at her and
seeing the sparkling eyes and lost all concentration. Emma herself felt her
heart flutter as David gave her a starry-eyed look and uttered a soft,
"Thank you" to her.
Emma walked over to check on the kids and found them all occupied. Karen
and Lilly came upon her and asked if she could go out and get some things
for later on in the day. Emma agreed but David came out and asked to go as
well, hoping to pick up a few small things that he had forgotten to get.
Karen quickly agreed, taking Lilly into the nursery before she could ask
any questions. The three girls were busy playing with Nigel Jr. and barely
acknowledged them. Nichole was leading the playtime with Nigel giggling at
the dancing and hopping. The two just shook their heads and smiled, Karen
admitted, "She's polar opposite of how she was six months ago, she could
barely stand to visit let alone enjoy her time here."
Neil and Ethan were busy playing video games and barely gave a, "Hello" to
them. The two were battling each other while the voice of Al Samuels and
Rebecca Lopez were heard laughing at their antics. The two girls gave warm
hellos to Karen and Lilly to which both told Al, "Enjoy your shopping
tomorrow" getting a weird look from the boys and a laugh from Rebecca.
Karen wisely told the boys, "Don't ask what she is shopping for" to which
the boys shuddered and crossed their arms showing they knew exactly what
was being bought.
Emma and David drove to Boston, the closest large city to the village of
Barnstead with what they needed. It took them about a half hour to drive
with neither noticing the time as they were busy talking the whole drive.
David listened to her talk about her family and her hopes causing David to
get upset and angry at the family over their treatment of her.
She in turn praised him for having such a loving and understanding family.
David admitted that it was learned and that they had trouble with Daisy
when she was first introduced and it took a dressing down from a respected
family friend to see they were wrong. Then he explained how Patrick had
changed things permanently by marrying Deborah to which Emma was pleased to
tell him, "The way Hannah and Paige describe her she was destined to marry
him" getting a silent nod from David.
In the store they found exactly what they needed but took their time on the
way back. There was no real hurry as the dinner was going to be in another
three hours and what was going to happen after was not for another four.
The two shared a drink at a small pub with Emma telling him that she had
never actually dated anyone and that David was the first boy who had shown
her any kind of attention.
David was floored by that but added, "I'm also the same way. I was so
focused on school, work, and studying for the state police exam that I
never dated." The two looked into each other's eyes and kissed. Emma broke
it off after a few minutes while David tried to apologize. Emma smiled
brightly and told him, "I enjoyed that. I liked it a lot."
The two finished their drink and went for a short walk to burn off the
alcohol. After a half hour the two drove back to Barnstead and hid the
items they bought in Karen's room. Karen gave them a big grin, asking if
they enjoyed the trip. Both blushed to which she pulled David aside and
told him, "I know the girls have been trying to get Emma together with you
but please don't break her heart." David nodded silently but added, "I'll
do what is right for her and for us." Karen knew exactly what he meant and
added, "As long as you are prepared for the consequences both short and
long term."
Karen started to round up the kids. She politely asked the boys to end
their gaming session while telling the girls to put the toys away and help
Nigel Jr. get ready for dinner. The teens were more than happy to stop
their work, with Michael complaining about having to read Shakespeare
before the MCAS tests getting nods of agreement from the other three. Karen
laughed and added, "At least you have the internet to help, in my day we
didn't have anything."
Lilly, Ophelia, and Bradford laughed now. Karen glared at three of them to
which Lilly happily told her, "Congratulations on being the first of us to
use 'in my day' on the kids." Karen grumbled, "John uses it all the time"
to which Michael told her, "No he doesn't, he uses, "At least you have it
easy, we had the internet but no Google!" getting laughs from the others.
David and Emma came in to hear the exchange and agree with Michael. Emma
snickered and eagerly whispered, "Should I tell Hannah and Paige she said
that?" David whispered back, "If you didn't they would be quite upset."
Karen turned to them and tried to glare but saw Emma trying to hide her
smile causing her glare to evaporate quickly. Emma was too sweet to take
any offense to.
Chef alerted them that dinner would be ready in an hour prompting everyone
to get ready. Reardon, the Smith butler, alerted Bradford that their guests
had arrived prompting Ophelia to give him an odd look but caused Karen to
snort and smile. She promptly told her, "Uncle Walter and Aunt Lillian made
the trip north, didn't they? It figures, they'd surprise us."
Ophelia blushed in embarrassment but Karen assured her it wasn't her fault,
she wouldn't have known. Karen in turn told Lilly, "We are going to have to
have lunch or dinner at the embassy with Uncle Walter at some point, but
it's just an informal one rather than a formal one like last night." Lilly
understood but asked, "Is he alright being seen with a single mother of
four?"
Karen shook her head and added, "You are family and he could care less what
anyone thinks about his family. He knows mom treated you like a daughter,
heck she considered you, Anne, Beverly, Gabby, Melanie, and Olivia to be
her other daughters. I am just saddened that she never got to meet Greta in
person and only knew Kennedy for two months." Lilly had tears in her eyes
as she hugged Karen, Ophelia herself barely fought back tears as she saw
the two grown women sharing a touching moment.
The three ladies went downstairs and greeted the Gormans while the kids
were still finishing washing. Karen received a big hug from Walter while
Lillian hugged and kissed Lilly. Karen softly told her, "Told you so" to
which Walter asked what she meant forcing her to explain. Walter grinned at
admitted, "She's telling the truth, Catherine wasn't one to see things that
weren't there. If she treated all of you ladies like daughters because she
felt like you were her daughters. The fact that the kids were dating one
another is beside the point, she was proud to call you family and I am
proud to do the same."
The kids finally came down and were happy to see Walter and Lillian
present. Neil and Faith were reluctant to say anything, having only met the
Gormans once at Leslie and Mark Sylvester's wedding the previous July.
Michael assured them that they were fine, the two were happy to greet them.
Walter and Lillian embraced them, with Lillian kissing the two on their
cheeks bringing out blushes in both. Walter knelt down and asked about Mick
and Sarah, their parents, prompting both to say, "They are with Brent."
Walter's eyes lit up in surprise to which Karen explained, "Their newborn
brother is named after dad and Louis Reagan, Mick and Sarah thought it best
that one of the children be named after them as he didn't have a namesake
among the kids."
Walter beamed with pride over hearing that. Karen added, "The next name on
the list is Walter. We don't know when it will happen but my money is on
Tanya and James York having a baby soon. James has already said they agreed
that it would be Walter or Lillian, that is if you don't mind." Both elders
were extremely pleased to hear that and immediately grinned to one another.
Chef announced that dinner was ready to be served prompting all to enter
the dining room. Nigel Jr. eagerly took his high chair between Lilly and
Karen. The meal was a simple meal of roast pork and potatoes with asparagus
on the side. The kids had no issues with the food and to their credit ate
it without making a mess or talking.
After the dessert of homemade cake and custard was eaten, the family
gathered in the lounge to which Karen announced, "Since it is Jessica's
birthday we have something special for her." Emma brought out a small
package to which Jessica tore into and cried at seeing the present inside,
it was a framed picture of her and her boyfriend Eric and one of all of the
teens and kids together at the wedding. Jessica hugged Karen then Lilly and
sat down next to Claire while she calmed back down.
Karen nodded to Lilly who announced, "Your parents had something special
planned. We are awaiting their call." David brought out Jessica's laptop
and hooked it up to the telly and immediately clicked on the Skype request.
All of their friends were together. Everyone was saying hi but the one that
caught Jessica's attention was the one in the middle. Sleeping among the
mass of kids and teens was newborn Marcus Sylvester.
Karen laughed and asked her nieces, "Which one of you got stuck watching
Marcus?" Iris Sylvester pointed at her sister Rachel who pointed back at
Irish which meant both were supposed to watch him. Karen told Walter and
Lillian, "I guess you get another treat. The little one sleeping in the
middle is Leslie's newborn son Marcus. She unfortunately went into labor
early alongside Sarah Jones."
The Smiths saw the kids clamoring for screen time and saying hello to the
others and enjoyed the mass of family being together. After a few minutes
Marcus started to stir and scream at full volume. Iris picked him up and he
immediate went for her breasts prompting the others to laugh and jokingly
tell the Smiths that he was hungry.
Iris complained, "There's nothing coming out of there" getting a laugh
which was followed by Karen saying, "There had better be nothing coming out
of there or you'd have a lot of explaining to do." The teens laughed while
JD, DJ Lopez, and Virgil York didn't understand the joke.
Marcus shuddered and a strong smell started to come from him causing the
teens to move away from him and getting Iris and Rachel to shudder. Karen
told them they had better take care of his diaper prompting the kids and
teens to cover their ears and scatter ending the call with a laugh. Walter
laughed and admitted, "He's definitely got Brent's lungs, the boy could
make the dead rise with that wail."
Bradford asked pointedly, "What is with all of that 'aunt' and 'uncle'
among the kids?" Everyone turned to Claire to which Jessica told her, "You
were there that night, you should tell the story." Claire sighed in defeat
knowing she had no choice.
Claire went right into it, "It started in October three years ago at a
sleepover at Uncle John's house. The five of us were spending the night but
Jenna ended up having a problem. She got her first 'monthly friend' and
didn't know what to do. Uncle John caught her crying in the bathroom and
washed her sleeping bag and pajamas then got her the needed products. When
Aunt Anne found out she joked that he treats us girls like his own nieces
so the boys and girls decided to just call him Uncle from then on. We
started to do the same with the other adults so now all of the adults in
the family are aunt and uncle even if they aren't really."
Jessica snickered, adding, "That's not the only thing. Aunt Valerie forgot
to refill the supplies so he had to drive to a few different stores to get
them." Karen added, "He had the supplies in the first place because Hannah
got her first when he had to babysit her and he ended up doing the same
except back then he didn't have a car so he walked two miles to the nearest
open store. Hannah refuses to acknowledge that happened but Paige was there
that night as well and she heard him tell her he'd be back with what she
needed."
Lilly was nodding the whole time. She added, "Hannah joked with Claire that
she got to call John uncle before he really was her uncle." Walter was near
hysterical while Lillian grinned with delight. Bradford shook his head in
disbelief until he recalled Hannah and Paige acting almost daughterly
around John. Ophelia was pleased to see that John's reputation wasn't just
being the rich uncle, he truly cared about the kids as if they were his
own.
Things quieted down as the awaited call came in. David clicked on the call
and all of the kids gasped in shock. Greta and Quentin greeted Jessica and
told her warmly, "We thought you would like this little surprise for your
birthday present."
Turning the camera over their shoulder the saw Sarah and Mick standing over
an enclosed incubator with a wiggling figure inside. The camera got closer
and all nine younsters gasped as they saw baby Brent for the first time. He
turned his head for a second then turned it away giving them a quick
glimpse of his whole face.
Sarah went closer and put her hands in the incubator, letting Brent grasp
them as he kicked around. Nobody said anything as they watched in awe as
Brent moved around while holding Sarah's fingers. Mick did the same on the
other side with Brent grasping his finger as well, this time turning to
look at him before turning away.
After several more minutes a voice told them that time was up. Sarah and
Micks said goodbye to Faith, Michael, and Neil while Greta and Quentin said
goodbye and happy birthday to Jessica and Scott. The kids were speechless
but they managed to eek out a soft, "Goodbye" to all them.
Before signing off the voice said a quick, "Be good for mom and dad. Don't
take advantage of Emma either. And try not to make Chef work too hard." The
camera turned and Karen loudly told him, "They are fine Nigel, you had
better get back to work though."
As Nigel clicked off the kids were all smiles. They hadn't seen their baby
brother yet due to his ill health but now they had. Ophelia and Bradford
saw why they wanted the kids to stay away and were glad that they didn't
have to endure that themselves. Walter grinned and told Karen and Lilly,
"The boy's a fighter, he's proving to be like his dad."
There was something else that the Smiths had not seen. It was the first
time they had ever seen Nigel as a nurse and he had a focus on his face
that they had not seen since his days studying for the A-Level exams. Nigel
wasn't he meek little boy nor was he the tired single father, he was the
strong male that they always wished he would be and despite his chosen
profession being deemed, "Feminine" he was a professional and the look on
his face and the body language that they could see proved he belonged
there, helping kids who need care and attention like little Brent Jones.
Chapter 3
The kids calmed down and went up to bed. The teens followed suit with
Jessica hugging Karen deeply for arranging the heartfelt gifts. Michael
softly asked, "Do you really think I couldn't handle being home this week?"
Karen sighed and admitted the truth, "No. You are much more sensitive to
what is going on than you think and you try to act tougher than you are. We
know this is hurting you, he's your family by blood even if the sperm donor
never acknowledged your existence. I'd expect the same reaction from Jaimie
or Miles but with you it is even worse. We love you too much to let you
stew all week especially when you would have to babysit Cat and JD.
Remember when you struggled with Jaimie's transition and her starting to
fall in love with Rick? We love you too much to let that happen again. You
are a mature young man but as much as you hate to admit it, you needed to
get away as much as Scott and Jessica."
David and Emma made plans for the next day while trying to keep things
platonic. She invited him to her room in the servants' quarters and hashed
out a simple framework but left things open for change. The two spent a
good hour trying to speak around the issue but eventually they got so close
that both kissed passionately.
The two were quick to do more as their natural instincts took over. Lust
and love overruled their reasoning and eventually led to intimate
relations. Neither noticed that a small tear had formed in the condom David
wore nor did they notice the leaking as they enjoyed their second round of
lovemaking before David left. It was discarded discretely, as was the
package, with Emma taking a quick shower before turning in for the night.
She never noticed the fluid in her, believing it to be her own juices.
David managed to slip back into his room unnoticed by anyone and fell
asleep, his face wearing a big grin that was more love than lust.
In the morning, David felt terrible at what he had done. Nobody noticed his
change in demeanor so he didn't dwell on it. Bradford announced that he
thought it best that he went with David so that he wasn't ignored nor
ridiculed by the local police during his presentation.
David thought it was a bit odd and thought it might be due to his being
close with Emma but Bradford admitted to him, "These men are slow to adopt
new things and I doubt they give two seconds to you. I just want your words
to be taken to heart and if it means throwing my title around then so be
it. It's my county too and I want my tax money to be used to the benefit of
all."
Emma was asked to drive Karen and the girls around. She was feeling
miserable and though she was taking advantage of David the previous night
but pulled herself together. Karen discreetly told her, "I know what you
two did and he will do the right thing with you. You have support from me
and the girls, and if something comes from last night, you will have Lilly,
Valerie, and Melanie's support as well. He cares a lot about you, but some
sacrifices may be made for your future together."
Emma understood. If she had to she would move to the US and study there.
She liked David a lot and hoped to be more than a fling but they would have
to wait until she was free form her year of service to the Smith family.
Ophelia discreetly talked with Karen and was told, "She is part of our
family now and unless she breaks the law please do not dismiss her from
service."
Ophelia got the hint, adding, "She is like a daughter to me and I could
never do that no matter what the other maids may think. I don't trust
anyone else with the children nor do I trust anyone else with my personal
items. She is a good person and will make a fine wife to him." Karen added,
"If anything comes along that will be inevitable lest his uncles knock some
sense into him. He will do the right thing, I just wanted to ensure that
she is going to be alright in the time between Sunday and this July."
Everyone got ready for breakfast. The teens, Neil, and Ethan did their run
before eating with the girls patiently playing in the nursery with Nigel
Jr. Over breakfast, the teens talked about what they were doing that day
with David nodding to Bradford that he was glad to have the support with
him. Ethan then added, "If they don't respect a fellow officer then they
don't deserve your help anyway."
The meal went fast as Chef kept it simple with bacon and eggs. The kids
knew that the bacon would be from a different part of the animal and
actually wanted to try it. Chef informed them that it was simply a curing
of pork so it was a catch-all name and both styles are bacon.
Karen snickered as they groaned at the history lesson. She proudly told
Chef, "I'll have to tell my brother that, he is always looking for
interesting facts." Chef grinned in appreciation, she always wanted to put
some of the non-culinary things learned in cooking school to use and
finally found one.
Breakfast was finished and cleared away with the teens going upstairs for a
shower before heading out for their daily activity. Emma felt bad that she
wasn't going to go with David but knew that she would be needed by Karen.
Thinking about what they may end up doing she realized that she was going
to be busier with Karen than with David and it was actually a better thing
for her as she would be kept busy as opposed to sitting around for an
uncertain amount of time.
Karen thought they were going ice skating and had them dressed for cold
weather but Ophelia informed the girls that she had booked a table for tea.
Karen asked, "Are the ladies going to be there?" getting a bright smile
and, "They would be miffed if you didn't take the girls to meet them."
Lilly sought an explanation getting a bright smile and, "Ladies Mabel and
Honoria are my closest and dearest friends and took a strong liking to
Hannah, Paige, and Nichole when they met them back in August and have
fallen in love with Bryan and Pete when they met them in November."
Lilly snickered and asked Karen, "Is this why you had us visit the tea
rooms at the hotels in Boston in January?" Karen grinned and didn't say a
word, Nichole answered for her with, "We were going to go to one anyway
later on in the week in London but I guess now we don't have to. The two
ladies are good people, they hate Great Aunt Camille almost as much as
Hannah and are going to enjoy hearing about Saturday night's verbal
chastising by Michael."
The girls had to quickly change out of their jeans and leggings and into a
set of dresses that Karen had specifically gotten for them for such an
occasion. The three girls wore similar dresses but in different colors.
Jessica and Claire wore sleeker dresses that covered their shoulders and
arms. Karen and Lilly had similar dresses that showed more arm than the
others but lacked the ruffles and lace that the younger girls had and
showed more cleavage than Jessica and Claire showed.
The ladies drove off, with Karen driving the Land Rover while Emma drove
Ophelia's Rolls Royce. Emma led the way to the posh hotel and had the two
vehicles parked by the valets. Karen got weird looks but when she was
addressed as Lady Karen they immediately started treating her differently
which caused Daisy and Faith to start snickering.
Inside, Ophelia made her way across the room not even bothering with the
attendant at the front. Karen was stopped, but Ophelia sternly told the
attendant that she was her daughter-in-law and thus would be treated with
respect. The manager recognized Ophelia and Karen and made it a point to
have his staff remember Karen's face as they would see her in the future
and it may not always be with Ophelia.
Mabel and Honoria greeted Karen and Nichole warmly. Nichole introduced
them, "This is Lady Honoria Beauchamp, Countess Hull. Next to her is Lady
Mabel Winstead, Baroness Cambridge." Karen then introduced Lilly and the
others, "This is my sister Lilly Peterson, her daughters Daisy and Claire,
and my niece Jessica Nelson and her cousin Faith Jones."
The two ladies looked intrigued to which Karen added, "Jessica and Faith
are unfortunately here due to Faith's newborn brother being ill. They are
here with Faith's brother Neil and Jessica's brother Scott and their
cousin/my nephew Michael Finn." Ophelia added, "Your forgot Lilly's elder
son David, who is here on business meeting with the police regarding some
software he designed."
The two ladies were then told all about the trip and David as well as the
boys. They loved hearing about the antics of the family especially the way
it expanded over time. Honoria grinned and asked, "Is this why Hannah and
Paige didn't come with you? Too many people?"
Karen shook her head and informed her, "They have classes this week. They
universities and colleges get a one week break in March and finish their
semester in late May. They may come for their break in March and possible a
weekend in April if their schedule allows them to, but I doubt it."
Lilly added, "Things are different in the US. We don't have half terms and
Easter break. The school calendars vary by state, and even then they vary
by when they start and end. The nine kids and teens are off this week and
don't get another day off until their April vacation."
The ladies understood now. Mabel asked, "What about their terms?" Karen
grinned as she told them, "Outside of high school it's straight through
start to finish. They have four quarters where students are marked to show
how they are doing but it's simply for marking as they don't stop just
because it is the end of the quarter but it does impact whether they
advance or repeat the year. High school has a clear midpoint where every
class has a required test. For semester classes it is the final exam, while
most it is the midterm. Both count towards the grades for the overall grade
for the class for the year."
Lilly added, "The midterms are usually the third week of January as it's a
four-day week due to a federal holiday. The new semester and some new
classes start the following Monday. Right now the students are in their
third quarter, roughly four weeks into the second semester. The quarter
ends in five weeks and we get their grades in six."
Ophelia asked about tests. Nichole informed her, "We don't do A-Levels or
GCSEs like here. We do a yearly standardized test that is given the week
after February vacation. They are mandatory for kids grades 3 and above so
Faith and Daisy don't have to take it but Ethan, Neil, and I do." Karen
added, "It stops in grade 10, so Jessica, Michael, Scott, and Claire don't
have to take it again if they passed it already last year. It also doesn't
affect college, there is a whole other test that is taken and that is one
done by choice not by requirement. Their actual grades matter more towards
college than the test."
They culled the talk as their tea arrived. Lilly surprised the three ladies
by asking if she could be mother getting a nod of approval. The girls
enjoyed the tea, they eagerly sipped the hot liquid while savoring their
small treats and sandwiches.
Karen was pleased that the girls were acting so well-mannered and well
behaved. Lilly was happy that their treks to Boston to prepare for the tea
outing was not time wasted, she could look forward to doing the same when
they returned to Boston. Claire whispered to Jessica, "This didn't seem
like fun but it's pretty cool." Jessica silently nodded as she drank some
more tea.
Emma eagerly snapped pictures of the group while feeding Nigel Jr. She sat
alongside the ladies but stayed quiet out of respect for her employer.
Nigel Jr. was on his best behavior as well, enjoying the two ladies that
had been nice to him the first time they met him. Nichole whispered to
Emma, "This is better than waiting around the police station, as much as he
likes you it's better that you came here than going there."
The meal was nearly completed when the group heard someone loudly
complaining about people being in her favorite table. Honoria and Mabel
shook their heads as they knew Camille was acting up due to Saturday's
thrashing by Michael. The manager tried to apologize but realizing that she
was actually an hour early and the table was booked for another half hour
he all but ignored her protests.
Camille made a big scene in front hoping to get Ophelia booted. The manager
reached his breaking point and asked her to quiet down or she would be
removed and banned. Camille continued with her complaints until a uniformed
officer walked in, asking what happened, then proceeded to tell Camille to
leave or be arrested. Camille was utterly humiliated and left in disgrace,
the manger telling her that she would never be allowed back again.
Ophelia told Mabel and Honoria, "She is going to one day end up sanctioned
if she doesn't stop her antics. Alistair is a good person but even he has
reached his breaking point." Mabel interjected, "He knows all about her
'extracurricular activities' with some of the staff but the man loves her
dearly and just can't part with her. Not yet anyway. Mark my words, it will
happen at the wedding. Keep your eyes on her at all times, especially
around the dresses. And keep her away from Nichole, she will try some way
of humiliating her if she can't get at Hannah and Paige."
Ophelia's face blanched but turned that around and smiled as she realized
she had a trump card. She added, "When she comes for her stay next month
I'll have Hannah try on my wedding dress to see if she is able to wear it
just in case. She is the rightful recipient of it regardless, but it
wouldn't hurt to try it on her and have it fitted to her body." Nichole
added, "It won't fit me no matter what, with all due respect Grandmother
you and Hannah are too large and I won't grow much larger than mom was."
The admission caught the three ladies by surprise. Nichole grinned and
pointed out, "I take after mom in size. You and Hannah have larger busts,
hips, and waists than mom ever did so unless I have surgeries to increase
them I won't get that large so the dress wouldn't fit me. It also goes to
the eldest daughter, which is Hannah. It's rightfully hers, not mine."
Karen had to reluctantly agree, pointing out, "You two are larger than her
mom was. Hannah would see it as a family tradition and would honor the
family by wearing it. You don't have to tell her anything about the dress,
just try it on her. Just ensure that the seamstress is not in Camille's
pocket."
With that the meal broke up. Karen insisted on paying as it was her idea to
have the gathering. Mabel and Honoria snickered and told Ophelia to let her
daughter-in-law pay, it was her right to do so. The ladies headed back, but
stopped first to do some shopping to kill time before dinner.
Ophelia snickered at the request from the girls, she wasn't used to doing
her own shopping much less mingling with commoners but the girls were
enthusiastic. Over at the shopping center both cars were parked with Emma
keeping the Rolls Royce in sight of the doors and under several CCTV
cameras. Ophelia realized what she was doing and thanked her, Emma simply
said, "It's my job to look after your property especially when you are
going to need it to get home."
Jessica and Claire headed for a lady's fashion store while the girls headed
for a toy store. Ophelia and Karen followed slowly behind as the two groups
split up with Lilly handling the girls while Karen thought best to go get
the boys something. Ophelia was pleased to see that Nigel Jr. hadn't gotten
to the phase where he wanted everything but could see that he enjoyed some
of the toys that the girls were looking at, especially ones that were close
to the infant toys that he played with.
Karen found something for him in his age range. Nigel Jr. saw something
even better, begging for a new Thomas the Tank Engine toy. Shaking her head
she asked if he wanted that, getting a big nod and plead of, "Thomas!" from
him. Karen grinned as he never did that before and being a toy he could use
with the boys she bought a few parts of a playset.
As they were leaving she told Ophelia, "Neil and Ethan like the show and he
must have caught on as well. Hannah and Bryan were a little older than him
when they found Thomas but I think it's alright to start him early." She
then added, "Neil likes trains a lot, just as much as Ethan likes planes.
He will have no problem playing with Nigel when there is some downtime."
The small group made their way to a video game store and found a newly
released game that Ethan wanted to play. It wasn't one of the older
shooting games that Al, Michael, and Rebecca played so it was fine for the
9-year-old Ethan to spend hours playing. Looking at it Ophelia had to ask,
"Playing as toys in a video game? What will they think of next?"
Emma added, "It's actually pretty fun. The movies that the games are based
off of are reduced to some comedic moments with lots of slapstick comedy."
Both ladies looked at her oddly, she meekly added, "I used to play some of
the older games with friends before I left home." Both nodded,
understanding that it was a rare youth moment from the normally mature
Emma. Despite being three months shy of 19 she wasn't that much older than
the teens and was still immature in many ways.
The group left with the girls hugging their new Sindy dolls that they had
picked out. Karen was very surprised at the choice but Nichole whispered,
"They didn't want to spend too much." Karen nodded at that, they weren't
that expensive and they were something they could remember their trip by.
Jessica and Claire spent much of their time walking around the various
stores and checking out the new styles. Nothing caught their eyes and while
the stores had good prices they didn't find anything to their liking. They
had much of what was being offered and really didn't need anything, it was
more of a chance to walk around without parents which they were happy to
enjoy.
The girls encountered some trouble as a few boys caught sight of them. They
made a quick move to get away from them, quickly going inside of a sexy
lingerie store which prompted the boys to stop cold. The girls waited a bit
and when the boys finally walked away they left, but not before checking
out some skimpy bras, panties, and other assorted lingerie.
They were just about to try on some of their selections when Lilly and
Karen came inside of the store looking for them. The look on Lilly's face
as she saw what they were about to try on told them all they needed to
know- the lingerie was too skimpy for them. They tried to say they were
just browsing for a few new things but the blushes on their face gave them
away.
Ophelia was amused by all of this. She hadn't had the opportunity to do
something like this with a daughter so this was a learning experience for
her. Lilly calmly explained to the girls, "You are going to have to carry
that in your luggage and have it scanned, do you really want the scanners
to see them?"
By now Karen caught on to what Lilly was doing. Karen added, "As much as
Will and Eric would love to see them I think they are a little too skimpy
and see through. If you really need some new bras and panties perhaps a
stop at Asda will suffice." Ophelia lost it, the girls were now beet red
and even the shop girl had to keep from falling over laughing.
The girls apologized, put the lingerie back, then walked out quietly and
swiftly. Karen quietly bought them for the girls, while Ophelia put the bag
inside another bag so they didn't notice. Ophelia asked why they did that
which prompted a smile and quick, "They need to know they have some limits.
The items aren't too bad, but they will think twice about anything too
sexy." Ophelia nodded in agreement, she could see it was a seasoned
response from a mother who had been there with her own daughter.
Emma sensed something happened but got smiles from the three adults. Daisy
and Faith wanted to know what happened getting quick, "You are too young"
from all of them. Nichole whispered a low, "They tried to get sexy
underwear" getting a loud, "Eww!" from the girls. Both Claire and Jessica
blanched and blushed but nothing more was said.
While the ladies were at tea and shopping, David and the guys were meeting
with the local police. As Bradford had expected, David was given a cold
reception from the police for being an, "Outsider" trying to peddle
something they felt that they didn't need. David expected that and didn't
bother with them, he talked with the people who would actually be doing all
of the work.
David wasted no time and showed clear statistics about crimes specifically
when they happened, who they happened to, and most importantly where. He
then showed what the official reports said and what actually happened,
showing that they weren't being placed properly and when they were placed
there on certain days the crime dropped. He got immediate agreements from
the officers but snide remarks from the brass, looks from the lower
officers shut them up as they could see that they were going to have a big
problem soon.
David finally showed how the placement worked better with valid examples
from other cities that followed his suggestions his previous visit 18
months before. With that done he opened his talk up to questions and was
immediate asked, "Why should we listen to some Yankee civilian. He hasn't
worn a uniform nor spent a day out on patrol."
This caused Scott, Michael, Ethan, Neil, and Bradford to burst into roaring
laughter. The Deputy Chief Inspector demanded to know what was so funny to
which David pulled up an image and showed his identification. He bluntly
told the DCI, "You clearly don't do your homework. If I was just a civilian
and never wore a uniform I wouldn't have been given the time of day from
your chief constable. For the record my name is Trooper David Peterson of
the Massachusetts State Police."
Michael added, "He has been awarded the department's highest honor once and
earned commendations twice." Bradford added, "As much as you would like to
berate David he has more training in his ]nine months out of the academy
than many of you have had in your entire careers. How many of you sport
degrees in forensics with certifications as scene of crime technicians?
None of you do, otherwise you would not be here and not have needed to
listen to him as you would already be aware of what he is telling you and
would have taken notes on what he was saying."
With the DCI thoroughly humiliated, the detectives and patrol officers
started asking questions about the tactics and deployments that he had
actually implemented instead of putting out there in theory. David was on
top of his game and answered everything as best he could. After a good half
hour of Q&A David ended the presentation and allowed the officers to get
back to work.
David's next stop was to meet with the chief constable and the commissioner
of police. Both greeted Bradford warmly, asking him what he was doing
there. Bradford just grinned and told them, "I'm here shadowing my guest as
he meets with your department. He got a cold reception from some inspectors
and chief inspectors but nothing a hard dose of reality didn't fix."
David added simply, "They didn't do their homework. I could have been just
anybody walking into the room." Bradford added, "They quieted down once
they heard his credentials including all of his training. Thankfully he
didn't have the weapons training brought up or they'd have run scared."
Both looked at David but Michael told them, "Mandatory pistol, shotgun, and
automatic rifle training as well as non-lethal riot weapons. He also had to
experience being tasered and pepper sprayed before he was allowed to train
with and don both of those weapons." Both nodded in agreement, few of their
officers had ever had to endure either of those and even fewer had fired a
gun outside of the military.
Bradford sat down and showed them exactly what David had done and then
added, "What he has shown is unbelievable simple to implement and has been
done successfully in places all over the US and in the UK. Consider doing
it here, it may help cut down on some of the crime in our county at no
additional cost in labor or loss of manpower in other areas and all the
credit will go towards you rather than David as you are the ones to
implement it. He is merely recommending it."
An agreement was reached that they would implement David's recommendations.
Bradford chatted with the two senior officials while Michael, Scott, Neil,
and Ethan waited outside. One of the officers who listened to David's
presentation came over and asked how they knew all that stuff about him.
The boys saw that they'd better answer him truthfully but also knew that
they likely wouldn't be believed.
Michael told him the truth, "He's my cousin and he helped save Ethan from
being kidnapped and likely murdered by a wanted criminal." Scott told him
sharply, "We come from a law enforcement family. Neil's father is a federal
agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives,
Ethan's girlfriend's dad is a deputy sheriff, and ours are reserve police
officers. Michael's uncle is the chief of police in our city and his aunt
is an assistant attorney general. We know law enforcement."
The officer wasn't fully convinced. Michael simply added, "It's not that
hard to think about. You don't have to believe it but it's the truth." They
walked out after that, finished with what they came there to do and heading
off to lunch.
Bradford knew of a good restaurant that wasn't too posh but still upscale.
The group didn't scoff at the prices but David was concerned about him
spending a lot on them. Ethan had to point out to Bradford, "He's the
oldest among us but is the only non-millionaire since he doesn't use his
trust fund yet. He doesn't like to spend a lot of money unless he has to."
Bradford looked surprised but Ethan added, "Scott has a large trust fund
that his parents started, Aunt Valerie sued Neil's former school district
on his behalf for allowing him to be tormented by bullies for years.
Michael was given half of Uncle John's settlement with the town and county
that tried to take Jaimie away from him, Bryan got the other half. David
has a trust fund in the millions but he hates to think about why he got it
and doesn't want to touch it no matter what since it's his dad's legacy."
The meal was quiet as they considered their next action. There wasn't much
to do so they decided to head back to the estate. In the van, the focus
became what they were doing the next day with Michael saying he would
rather stay at the estate instead. His reasoning was he simply didn't think
it was all that impressive but really he just wanted to rest.
At the estate, Michael asked Bradford if he had checked the stocks he
suggested. Bradford pulled up the listing and sure enough, they were doing
well. Michael then looked over the ones Bradford's friends wanted to get in
on and saw that he had correctly predicted that they were starting to head
downward. Looking over the news from the weekend he saw why, just as
Michael predicted the trickle down effect impacted them as the companies
they worked with had issues causing ripples that affected them.
Bradford was pleased, Michael had earned the estate a large amount of money
and likely made several hundred thousand pounds for his colleagues. Michael
grinned and added, "I probably did well myself, I bought about $50,000
worth and with a 20% increase and another 20% expected in the next week
I'll likely make about $22,000 profit when I sell them off."
Bradford was amazed at his nonchalant attitude towards the trading. Michael
was a natural at it, and the amount of money he gambled on the market was
pretty large for a teen to toss around. Karen walked in after hearing the
story and pointedly added, "Beverly deserves all of the credit though, she
is the one who had to approve of you spending the money. She won't let you
waste your hard earned money on frivolous things like trying to prove
yourself to people you don't really need to impress."
Michael was admonished but Karen added, "You did well for yourself, you
know what you are doing and are doing it wisely. She just wanted me to tell
you that it was a large amount of money to gamble with, even if you are
going to earn a tidy sum in return. Now you better get into the lounge as
Will will be calling soon and I know it's going to be funny."
The trio went into the lounge where Claire was eagerly awaiting Will's
Skype call. When it came in she was surprised to see Raul Rodriguez answer
it. The others snickered as they figured something was up.
Claire asked what was going on. Will could be heard saying, "Tell her I'm
going out with four beautiful girls." Claire's face reddened as she angrily
told him, "I hope they are all ugly and give you some horrid disease from
touching you!"
To her shock everyone burst into laughter as they then heard four loud
cries of, "Hey we're not ugly!" coming from the minivan. Raul carefully
turned the camera towards the girls to which Claire's face dropped. Will
grinned and explained, "Everyone else is out so I got drafted to watch the
girls with Raul. We are going to Boston Common for some sledding."
Claire asked why they weren't out to which Will told her, "Reed is out with
Eric and George down in Connecticut with their dads, Michael was supposed
to go too but he's with you. Miles is with Christina, Aunt Anne, and Paige,
Jaimie is with Rick at the movies, Courtney and Jessie are with Iris, Sam,
and Rachel watching Marcus while Aunt Leslie and Uncle Mark go shopping.
Francesca is out with her parents and Donald, and Aunt Kennedy is out with
the boys. The dads are out helping put together baby furniture for Aunt
Sarah. We are the only ones left so we got stuck with these four."
Claire asked why Raul was there to which he told her, "Mom took Stephanie
and Al to get bras." Will added, "Deborah told mom and Aunt Olivia that she
was taking Avery bra shopping so they thought it was time that Al and
Stephanie get fitted for proper bras."
Claire unintentionally asked Raul, "Why didn't you go too?" This caused all
of the girls as well as those around her to laugh. She didn't think it was
funny, scolding everyone. Raul added, "Are you honestly asking why I am not
going bra shopping with my girlfriend, her mother and sister, and my mother
and younger sister, and her friend and mother?"
Claire's face reddened to which Lilly added, "OK you two aren't allowed to
go out shopping together by yourselves anymore. Not that I don't mind Will
getting bras, but I don't want him to know your size." Claire immediately
blanched as Will added, "No thanks, I'd rather keep my bra shopping to
online only. They don't' carry my size in the store anyway."
Lilly burst into a big laugh while Ophelia and Bradford tried to understand
what was going on. Karen whispered to them, "He is joking, he loves to
crack jokes whenever possible and this one was meant to calm Claire down.
He has no intention of getting bras, it's just a big joke meant to make
Claire feel better after that big embarrassing faux pas." Seeing Claire
visibly calmer they saw the truth there.
Clicking off, Claire turned to her mother and tried to glare but burst into
laughter. Scott grinned and asked, "Should I have recorded that for future
blackmail?" Claire nodded but added, "At least I know what to get him for
his birthday, maybe I should ask Stacy and Courtney if they'd like the same
for the two of you" getting the girls laughing as Scott and Michael winced.
Chef announced that dinner was served leading them to head into the dining
room. Ophelia stopped Lilly and asked what the call was all about. Lilly
was to the point in saying, "They are concerned with Jessica, Scott,
Michael, Neil, and Faith. It was a subtle way of checking in but it worked.
The fact that Will got a chance to get some teasing in was a side bonus,
the girls were concerned for Faith and Neil which was why they didn't say
anything, especially Cat." Karen added, "The shopping is real, Al and
Stephanie are blossoming and Avery was supposed to go shopping with Deborah
and Sheila a week ago but plans changed due to the wedding."
Dinner was a nice chicken dinner with turnips. It took a little bit of time
before the girls at the side vegetables as Chef called them, "Neeps" which
they didn't recognize but once they tasted them they were eaten quickly.
Karen smirked at Chef and quietly told her, "They refuse to eat them when I
make them, I guess what they don't know won't hurt them." Chef chuckled as
she got the desserts ready, giving them simple cheesecakes with cream.
After dinner, the group discussed plans for the next day. David reiterated
that they were going to York. Michael declined to go, hoping to stay there.
Karen nixed that idea, insisting that he do something so he was stuck going
with the girls. Claire suggested that Emma replace Michael so there were
two adults with them just in case which got approval from the others while
David tried to hide his grin.
Karen reiterated that they had to stop at the museum the next morning which
Ethan grinned at hearing. Michael realized she had outwitted him, they
weren't making a trip back to the estate to drop him off so he was stuck
with the girls all day by default. Nichole and Ethan asked them to stop at
the castle for a minute so they could say they visited one getting a grin
from Ethan who knew they'd see some planes taking off and landing while
there.
David slipped out to see Emma to tell her the good news. Emma was thrilled
and embraced David leading to some more bedroom fun. The two were quick and
after showering together and some more fun went their separate ways.
Chapter 4
In the morning, the run around the estate was done but was cut short to 20
minutes. Everyone showered then ate before heading off towards RAF
Coningsby and the Battle of Britain Museum as requested by John. Ethan and
Nichole were recognized and gave the crew hugs to them while letting the
teens do their research and take pictures of the planes and displays. They
spent less time there than expected but were pleased to leave, grumbling
about being forced to work on their vacation to which Ethan joked about
liking the visit.
Tattershall Castle was next and while not interesting to the teens Faith
and Daisy were happy to see it. Karen saw the look and thought best to
treat them to a visit to Lincoln where there is a larger castle lay and fit
the fairy tale castle idea. Ethan grinned and pointed to the airbase and,
Neil, Faith, and Daisy stood gawking at the jets flying close by.
The groups split up with Emma driving north towards York with the Land
Rover while Karen drove north towards the skating rink in Lincoln. Michael
was sandwiched between Nichole and Nigel Jr. on the trip. Thankfully the
drive was only 35 minutes so it wasn't that bad to him. Nigel Jr. kept
looking at him oddly for being there, having gotten used to him going with
the guys instead.
The skating rink was packed and they were given a time slot. Unfortunately,
the only one that was available was in the early afternoon so they had a
lot of time to kill before their allotted skate time. Michael was relieved,
he didn't want to plant his face on the ice and let the girls have
something to snicker about to the rest of the family.
Looking at a guidebook Daisy pointed to the castle and asked to go see it.
They all agreed with Michael being volunteered to push Nigel Jr. in his
carriage. Michael didn't have a problem with that, he was just there
because he had to be and Nigel Jr. never gives him any trouble.
The group spent an hour walking the grounds, taking pictures from the wall
and parapets. The two girls smiled at being able to say, "I visited a
castle" to Ms. May, giggling as they looked across the walls and courtyard.
Lilly grinned as they said that, adding, "You visited two castles not just
one" knowing full well Ms. May wouldn't believe them.
Michael lifted Nigel up and let him see across the wall, getting happy
laughs from him at being treated like a big boy. Nigel didn't fight him
when he had to put him back in the carriage, getting some very annoyed
complaints from Nichole over his treatment of Michael. Outside the castle,
Nigel demanded to be let out and carried forcing Michael to carry him and
to which Nigel promptly fell asleep.
The group walked around downtown Lincoln, visiting some of the shops before
stopping to eat lunch. After a simply meal of fish and chips they went over
to the rink and rented their skates, with Michael being forced to join in
the fun. When it was their time they all skated with Lilly staying put with
the sleeping Nigel, laughing as Karen and the kids fell down while Michael
tried his best to not fall down.
Jessica and Claire were the best and were happy to help Daisy and Faith
skate. Nichole was helped by Michael who held off complaining so he could
focus on helping out. Nichole in turn didn't joke about his trips and
falls, knowing that he was trying hard not to do so.
After an hour of skating their time was up and they returned their skates.
The girls were all sore and battered but kept things light on the drive
back. Michael was silent as he tried hard to focus on his iPad while the
girls chatted away around him, the girls knowing not to bug him while also
knowing that he was holding off showing any kind of aches and pains from
his falls and the strenuous skating.
The drive back to Barnstead was mostly quiet as the three younger girls
fell asleep. When they arrived back at the estate the girls were hauled
upstairs to their room and put to bed. Michael kept Nigel Jr. company
playing with his beloved trains while Karen and Lilly changed the girls and
Jessica and Claire took a quick shower.
Downstairs in the lounge, the teens were told to finish their project so
they would have a clear week. Claire and Jessica tried to pawn their work
off on Michael but that was quashed by Lilly and Karen. He wrote up his
part of the assignment fast and after a review by Jessica and Claire met
with their strained approval, went to talk with Bradford.
As soon as he saw Michael Bradford was all smiles. Bradford informed him,
"My colleagues are over the moon. They heeded your advice and avoided
losing millions. They sold off much of their stocks before the drop in
price and made a tidy profit, much more than they had made in years. They,
in turn, bought the stocks you recommended and with the ensuing rise in
price they made back their investment and more. They want to recommend you
for an apprenticeship with the banks or a brokerage firm."
Michael shook his head at hearing that. He kindly informed them, "I am
still in school until next June and won't leave Courtney home to be scooped
up by some desperate vulture. She won't be going to any of the major
schools so she is stuck in choosing one of the state schools or second tier
Longwood Area colleges. As much as I would love to do it, I can't."
Sensing this was a touchy subject Bradford asked why. Michael answered
honestly, "All of the money that I'd make doesn't mean anything if I have
to be away from her. She could have any guy she wants but she chose me and
I won't let her get away even if it means giving up a high paying job. If
they still want me to intern with them over the summer I can do it but it
is only until late August."
Bradford nodded, it was the most they would get from Michael. If they
wanted his abilities, they would have to deal with his schedule. He added a
swift, "I have a place that you can stay at, it belongs to Ethan but I am
sure that he would allow you to stay there."
Karen listened intently to what occurred. She grinned widely then told
them, "I'll talk with your parents, but I think this is a good idea. You
are trustworthy and this is a unique opportunity for you, we might have to
have someone overseeing you but that could be easily handled. I think
Patrick and Deborah would be fine keeping an eye on you as they could use
the vacation. Besides, Courtney could always join you for a week or two as
well."
Bradford's face lit up. Michael couldn't argue with her about them keeping
an eye on him and being with Courtney was too enticing even if it was
strictly no sex as it always is. Lilly added, "We will talk with Jake about
this, if it's on the up and up you might get credit for it."
Bradford added in, "It's all legitimate. They will be sending over the
paperwork so hopefully you can start this summer. I did tell them that you
had to attend the wedding in the US so you would have to conduct business
over the internet and via Skype but they were perfectly fine with that."
Dinner was quiet without the four. Michael kept to himself while getting
Nigel Jr. to eat everything. Nigel insisted on Michael playing with him
after and without any reason to say no he spent an hour afterwards playing
with his Thomas toys again. The girls came into the nursery in the middle
of their play session and watched but didn't say anything, knowing Nigel
was enjoying himself and Michael was distracted.
Downstairs Jessica got a surprise Skype call from her boyfriend Eric
Vincent. Claire tried to tease her but she was quickly reminded of the
previous day's call from Will prompting Claire to blush and shut up.
Jessica grinned as Lilly told Claire, "She has you there, you did get
pretty embarrassed by Will. Plus it's rare that Eric does something like
this so it's pretty big.
Eric indeed had called with big news. He grinned and announced, "Dad
finally admitted that he has a boyfriend!" Jessica asked who it was but
Eric only said, "He is acting like maybe Raul and Stephanie might have a
cousin soon." Both Claire and Jessica squealed in delight, with Jessica
asking, "He's really dating Ricardo Ramirez? That's huge for Ricardo! He's
finally going to stop acting so distant when he's around everyone and start
being part of us."
Karen had to explain to Bradford and Ophelia, "Ricardo is the man who went
to court on Ethan's behalf when Jeffries tried to get those frauds to claim
to be his relatives. He's gay, as is Eric's father, but Eric's father Alex
is one of the toughest men you can ever meet and while smaller than all of
the other fathers he is twice as strong and quicker than all but Ethan and
Reed."
Eric's face beamed with pride as he told them that his buddy George Daniels
had been the one to figure out the truth. He asked that thy not make a big
deal out of it as the two were taking things easy but he also added that he
told Ricardo that if he was serious about marrying his dad then he expects
adoption forms soon as he and his dad are a package deal. Jessica added,
"He would be a fool not to take you as his son, and Raul doesn't have any
reason to shy away from us anymore since he's your new cousin. He is family
now in more ways than one."
The next morning Michael and the girls went horseback riding again. To
their surprise Lilly led the way with Karen snapping pictures of her as she
rode around the paddock while the others mounted their horses. Marion was
grinning from ear to ear at the sight, she was a natural in his eyes. Lilly
blushed and freely admitted that she enjoyed riding but there just wasn't
any time to do it.
Michael was doing better after ignoring his past fears and bad memories.
Nichole kept close to him, assuring him that he was doing alright. He
silently nodded, but followed her lead in whatever she did. He had
experience riding, but his confidence still wasn't where he felt he should
be and didn't want to get too far away from the more experienced Nichole.
They cut short their riding as snow started to fall and from the way Karen
was talking to them it was going to be heavy. Michael reluctantly got off
his horse and helped the girls while Nichole and Claire helped Marion
stable the horses. The group were quickly moved inside to change as the
snow started to get heavier and the wind blowing harder.
After his shower, Michael went down to the lounge to relax and work on his
English assignment. He got a call from Jaimie which was out of the ordinary
for her. Jaimie looked terrible, she was exhausted and from the look of the
sleeping figure behind her it was clear that Cat was up to her annoying
habit of seeking out Jaimie when she was upset.
Michael didn't have to ask why, he only asked, "When did she start doing
that again?" Jaimie muttered as soft, "Last night. She misses the girls.
Kylie and the others are busy but JD has been having the same problem as
her."
Miles came in with the sleeping JD in his arms. Michael took one look at
them and ordered JD put in Jaimie's bed and Jaimie to sleep in his room.
They gave him an odd look but he retorted, "You two need sleep and once she
is asleep she isn't waking up. You can't sleep with her in the bed so just
sleep in my room once she falls asleep again. She won't do it after the
girls come back so there's no worry about it after Sunday morning."
Miles did what he was ordered to do, Jaimie waited and asked him how things
were going over there. Michael sighed and admitted, "I got an internship
offer from Lord Smith's friends and colleagues that Aunt Karen told me that
I should accept. She is going to have Patrick and Deborah come with me so
they can keep an eye on me and have their own honeymoon. She might get
Courtney to spend some time over here with me as well."
Jaimie grinned and told him warmly, "Courtney will be alright with that.
You deserve a chance to learn from people on the job, much more so than
Uncle James and Aunt Greta." She signed off and went to bed, Michael
grinning and seeing Karen, Lilly, and Ophelia looking down smiling at him
as well.
Michael tried to play it coy but Karen told him warmly, "You must really
think they need rest if you are letting Jaimie into your room. You never
let them in your room. Mind you it's probably a pig sty but it's still kind
of you." He shrugged it off and went back to work, trying hard to finish
his assignment.
While Michael and the girls were in Lincoln Emma and the guys were enjoying
themselves up in York. The drive went faster than expected much to Neil,
Ethan, and Scott's enjoyment. David, though, hoped for more time with Emma
as the two talked the whole two-hour drive.
It was lunch was on their mind as soon as they arrived. They found a nice
pub and ordered plates of bangers and mash for all of them while enjoying a
pint. Scott tried to get David to allow him to drink a pint but Emma's
stern, "You are too young" stooped him. He grinned and added, "It was worth
a shot" getting David to shoot back, "And I'll be sure to tell mom and Aunt
Karen you said that."
Neil ate the food quickly, enjoying the sausages. Ethan thought it was odd
but then remembered that he was so used to Italian sausages and hot dogs so
it was something new to him. Scott hadn't said a word since he was
chastised by Emma and David but enjoyed the meal anyway. Emma giggled at
David's reaction to the ale, he admitted, "I'm usually one for hard ciders
and wine, but it would look odd if you were the one drinking the ale and I
was the one drinking the wine" getting a smile from Emma.
As they were leaving to check into their hotel David tossed the keys to
Scott and told him that he could drive. Scott looked at him suspiciously
but David was serious, telling him, "You have been good so far despite your
slip-up earlier. It's only a short distance but I would rather you drive
than sit around a full hour until the alcohol burns off." Scott didn't bat
an eye, he got in the driver's seat and drove carefully the mile to the
hotel.
The check-in completed the group walked to York Castle to take pictures and
take part in the tour. The boys were thrilled but Scott wasn't too
enthusiastic. He took plenty of pictures, figuring that John would want
them but at the same time didn't really show too much care for the
exhibits.
The next stop was one that was aimed at Neil. David was told that he had to
visit the National Railway Museum and to nobody's surprise Neil nearly
fainted at being shown the pamphlet for the museum. Ethan grinned just as
brightly, he hoped Neil would enjoy it and was the one who suggested it to
Karen and David. Seeing Neil happy brought Ethan happiness as well.
Scott was impressed by the museum. The layout used old railway buildings
and tracks as well as new structures that blended well. The architect in
him loved it, and after seeing some of the unique engine designs over the
years he started to enjoy some of the engines on display as well.
David was impressed with the museum and the exhibits. Emma herself enjoyed
the walk and neither had noticed that they held each other's hand
throughout. Ethan grinned with pride as the two were joined at the hip
throughout the walk-through and despite the cold, they enjoyed the ride in
the replica engine. Neil's face couldn't stop smiling as he proudly told
them, "I have always wanted to get up close with a steam engine but there
aren't many around us."
After spending the afternoon at the museum the group headed in town for
dinner. This time David was driving, much to Scott's chagrin. There wasn't
much time to do anything so David scanned the guide pamphlets hoping to
find a theater showing kid-friendly plays but couldn't. They had to opt
instead for dinner and a movie.
After driving back to the hotel after the movie Ethan and Neil were put to
bed by Scott. He grinned and told the two to enjoy themselves but added,
"Don't forgot what could happen." Both blushed to which Emma showed she
came prepared, slipping a square package into David's hand.
In the morning the kids were up before David. Scott got them dressed and
down to breakfast while the lovebirds slept in. When they finally emerged
Scott didn't say anything, only telling them that the two were fed and were
waiting on them. David and Emma ate quickly so Ethan and Neil didn't get
antsy or start asking questions that they couldn't or didn't want to
answer.
First on their agenda was a visit to York Castle and particularly
Clifford's Tower. Ethan thought about the previous visit to Lincoln Castle
and grinned as he thought that his Uncle John would be thrilled to see the
place but knew he wouldn't have the time. The pictures were priceless and
the visit to the museum nearby took almost as long as the walk around the
tower's top.
After leaving they went to lunch then to work off the hearty meal then
walked up and down the famous, "Shambles", taking a lot of pictures and
window shopping while walking towards York Minster for a few more pictures.
The stop there wasn't long and the kids had finally had enough of the city.
David suggested taking in one of the small gatehouse museums which the trio
reluctantly agreed to seeing as they had nothing else to do and it was too
early to head back.
The drive back was quiet as the boys fell asleep from being worn out by
walking. Scott was busy doing some work on his iPad leaving David and Emma
to talk. They hadn't noticed that over two hours had passed and soon they
were approaching Barnstead and the estate. Emma gave him a quick kiss
before rushing off to her room, leaving David flustered and blushing while
Scott shook his head grinning.
They were unlucky in that the final hour of the drive was in heavy snow.
Emma was fearful but David explained warmly, "I have driven in much worse
conditions and learned how to drive in nasty weather at the academy. Boston
drivers are the worst but we know how to drive in the snow. It'll be
alright." Sure enough, through his careful maneuvering they avoided sliding
several times and did much better than some of the cars ahead of them who
slid out or simply stalled in the snow.
There was still an hour until dinner so the kids elected to enjoy the
snowfall out back. All of them were dressed warmly with extra layers and
fleece glove and hats. The Smiths watched in enjoyment from the breakfast
room windows as the kids built snowmen, toss snowballs at one another, and
dug out caves and built mounds. The snow wasn't expected to last long as
temperatures would rise the following day but it was still snow and they
couldn't help but enjoy it.
Karen stayed inside with Nigel Jr. who didn't like snow. He hated the cold
as well, but wet and cold would bring out the inner toddler in him. Ophelia
and Bradford stared at the kids as they tossed the snow at one another,
Karen asked, "Didn't Nigel and Harry ever do that?"
Both shook their heads no, with Bradford telling her, "It just wasn't done.
We barely saw them when they were home from school on holiday and the half-
term breaks were normally spent at school instead of returning. Ethan was
the same way until you took him in, we are thankful that you broke the mold
and allowed him to be himself. He is certainly a new man and he has never
laughed like that nor enjoyed himself like that before."
The kids got cold and went inside, first discarding their wet clothes and
allowing the hats and gloves to dry out. David spent much of the time they
were outside up in his room packing, getting ready for his departure the
following morning. Emma was saddened that he was leaving but he assured her
that he'd see her in the summer and talk about their future then.
Dinner was eaten and the kids again enjoyed some unique food to them, this
time Welsh lamb. The kids didn't ask what the meat was, and the adults
didn't tell them. The dessert of apple pie with sweet cream ice cream was
enjoyed and within an hour all six kids were asleep with the teens
following soon after.
Everyone was up early and showered before breakfast which was eaten
quickly. Michael and Nichole were the only ones who didn't immediately
shower as they were staying at the estate while the others enjoyed London.
Ophelia and Bradford were more than happy to watch them while Karen and
Lilly took the rest around London, although they were disappointed that
they weren't going to partake in the meal at the embassy.
Emma was visibly saddened but she knew her time with David would come to an
end quickly. The group gathered their overnight bags and headed to the van
and the Land Rover. Karen told David to drive in with Emma, Scott, and
Jessica which relieved both of them immensely.
In the van, Lilly asked what that was about but only got a quick, "I'll
tell you afterwards." Claire was asked and got the same reaction. The boys
tried to say something but were immediate given a glare from Claire. Daisy
and Faith were unaware of what was happening and were focused on their
iPads and watching the changing scenery as Barnstead gave way to the A-road
then to the motorway.
After a tough 3-hour drive through heavy traffic they made it to the
airport and saw David off. Karen revealed to him that John had upgraded his
ticket to first class so he was going to spend the time before his flight
was called in the luxury lounge and enjoy a nice relaxing flight. He hugged
her deeply for that then did the same to Lilly.
The girls hugged him goodbye as Scott looked on, grinning and gesturing
towards Emma. Emma had tears in her eyes but David hugged her deeply then
kissed her on the lips leaving her breathless. He whispered to her, "I'll
see you in July, and if you still feel the same way towards me then we can
move forward from there."
David kissed Emma one more time before joining the other passengers in the
security screening queue. Emma excused herself and told them that she'd be
back to pick them up the following afternoon. Lilly looked at Karen for an
explanation as to what just happened only getting a solemn, "Your little
boy just grew up this week. He's found himself someone who shares his love
and bed."
When Emma was out of sight Karen finally told her, "You didn't notice it
but he and Emma have grown very close since they met. I know that he has
slept with her a few times, despite their attempts to be discrete. I
explained to both of them what could happen and he has told me that he will
support her and do the right thing. I trust him to follow through on that
pledge. At worst you become a grandmother, at best you gain another
daughter-in-law. But it's evident that the two are falling in love and if
they still feel the same way in July then we are likely looking at three
weddings this summer not just two."
Claire spoke up by admitting, "Hannah and Paige planned this whole thing.
The like Emma a lot and want David to finally have a girlfriend. They
wouldn't have done this if they didn't believe that David would fall for
Emma or that they weren't going to make a happy couple. He loves her, she
loves him. It's practically Deborah and Patrick all over again!"
Daisy and Faith asked what they meant by sleeping together getting all
three teens to say, "Just a little sleepover". Daisy added, "OK I thought
you meant that they had sex." Karen had to stifle a laugh as Lilly tried to
explain, "Sometimes that is true, other times not. I guess you caught me in
a tough position so I'll admit the truth. They like each other a lot
though, and there is a chance that you may be an aunt next November. Please
don't talk about that with anyone else as you are too young to talk about
those kind of things and Ms. May wouldn't hesitate to get me into trouble."
Daisy was miffed but she let it drop. The teens hurried her and Faith along
as Scott pushed Nigel Jr. with Neil and Ethan flanking him. Lilly mumbled
that she was too young to know those things but Karen added, "Welcome to
the new millennium where kids know about sex before they are out of
kindergarten. At least she's not using it to make you cringe...not yet
anyway."
The family drove into London then checked into their hotel and parked their
van in the hotel's lot. The list of places to visit were gone over and
since they were staying close to the embassy they did the normal visits to
Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, and finally places along the Thames. The
girls didn't seem to mind the walk and enjoyed seeing places that they had
heard about on TV and read in books.
Faith asked if they knew where Padding Bear was. Karen looked at Lilly then
answered, "I don't know." Scott looked online and showed a statue of him in
Paddington Station. Neil's eyes immediately lit up as did Faith's. Looking
over the station's layout, Karen noticed that there were severeal places to
grab a quick bite so they all agreed to go.
They had to take the Tube to get to the station which caused Neil to smile
nonstop. At the station, they located a statue of the famous bear and took
pictures with it. Nearby was a souvenir shop so the girls bought their own
bears and a book. Neither Lilly nor Karen could fault them for their
purchases as it was a unique souvenir and it was an educational purchase.
Neil looked at the trains in the station and at images of the history of
the station. He loved it, and despite being somewhat reluctant even Scott
had to admit it was a nice looking station that piqued his interest as an
architectural novice. Claire and Jessica felt like the odd people out as
they didn't really care for Paddington nor trains nor architecture, they
were just along for the ride.
After eating a meal of pasties and dessert of cookies the group headed back
to their hotel by way of the Tube which Neil thoroughly enjoyed again. The
kids were wiped out as they got up to their suites, with Claire and Jessica
not being too happy to have to share a suite with Karen and Lilly. Scott
then added, "Would you rather spend the night with us?" That quickly
stopped their complaints as Karen smirked.
Everyone slept well and after a light breakfast the group walked out to the
nearest Tube station to visit some more sites. This time they headed to
Greenwich and followed that up with a visit to the Imperial War Museum.
This ate up their morning and after heading to the hotel to check out they
packed up and drove to the embassy.
Security knew about Karen's visit and searched their van thoroughly then
greeted the family happily. Walter was pleased that they were enjoying
themselves so far. He told her that in July he would be proud to host the
entire family at his private residence, Winfield House.
Karen chuckled and asked why he hadn't done that before, getting a sly
smile and simple, "We could manage your small size before especially as you
are the closest I have to family but for all of you? Well we need a bigger
place for that. Given that it's the grandchildren of a noble getting
married I figured that you would enjoy a chance to get together in a place
the media can't get access to without getting into extensive trouble."
Lillian asked about what they had visited so far and was pleased to hear
about the mix of historical and cultural sites. Neil and Faith were the
focus of their questions with both being the center of attention much to
the relief of the others. The three teens were asked if they were ready for
the tests the next week getting glum looks and chuckles from the adults.
The question about Michael and Nichole's absences was finally asked. Karen
didn't waste time and admitted the truth, "They saw what we were going to
visit and decided against going. They enjoyed visiting those places already
and decided to stay in Barnstead and enjoy the peace and quiet." Lillian
and Walter nodded in agreement, with Walter adding, "It's a nice area to
visit but if you have seen the places already it gets old fast."
The meal ended with the family hugging Walter and Lilian goodbye. They
drove on to the estate and after a three-hour drive relaxed. Michael and
Nichole didn't ask what they did, simply asking, "What did Uncle Walter
say?"
Karen grinned and told them, "We are all going to Winfield House. It's
going to be a big gathering with plenty of guests." The two groaned at that
but she added, "He wanted it to be held there because of how many people
are going to the wedding and to keep some of the buzzards from flying
around us. It's more for everyone's protection than anything else."
Michael began to tell her about their time spent with Ophelia and Bradford.
He and Bradford had talked about finances and what he thought he should do
for investments. The two got along great and Bradford was grinning the
whole time.
Nichole spent much of her time riding and walking the grounds. When she got
bored she talked with Kylie, Margaret, and Nancy until they had to go to
their ballet recital. The girls were upset that she wasn't there to see her
but told her to watch the recital online as her uncle Willie had recorded
it.
The real fun was Thursday evening as Camille showed up unexpectedly and
demanded an apology for embarrassing her the previous Saturday. Michael
asked her sharply, "What do you want me to apologize for? For your being
caught spreading lies about Ethan, insulting Aunt Lilly, or trying to
demean and embarrass Aunt Karen? You are wasting your breathe as I sure as
hell will not apologize for what I said to you. You insulted my family and
deserved much worse than what I gave to you."
Camille was outraged and tried to slap him but Reardon, the faithful family
butler, grabbed hold of her hand and told her loudly and authoritatively,
"Master and mistress do not take kindly to people who assault children,
especially guests." She pulled away from him and tried to slap him but was
grabbed by her husband Alistair who pulled her out and told her to stay in
the car until he got back.
Lord Alistair Young was not messing around and his angry glare told her
that she had better shut up and follow his order or else. He then turned to
Michael and asked for his deepest apologies and had actually come to speak
with him about some assistance regarding Pete and Bryan's wedding gifts but
Camille had refused to stay home. Michael realized that Camille was going
to be sitting for a while as Alistair grinned as he said that, she had
earned her punishment and would suffer greatly in the boring cold.
Reardon was kind enough to ensure that Camille was not allowed back into
the house then went back to his duties. Alistair and Michael talked for two
hours about what Alistair wanted to do, getting Michael to look over his
assets and what he could do to increase them. Michael gladly told him
everything that he could think of and from his projections he would be able
to ensure that both were wealthy even after inheritance taxes ate away at
the fortune. That wasn't including the guaranteed sale of Alistair's flats
and houses which would double their assets when sold.
As he left Alistair thanked Michael for his patience with Camille. Michael
pointed out, "I knew bullies much worse than her and learned that if you
ignore them and don't lose your cool they make a mistake that costs them
dearly. I see that you have a similar stance with her and I also know that
she will break her final chance in July so enjoy your impending freedom
from her and if I know my cousins they will seek you out whenever they
visit just as Aunt Karen seeks out our great uncle Walter."
Michael escorted Alistair out and as they approached the car Camille was
furious with him to leaving her out in the cold. Alistair just grinned and
didn't answer, driving on without saying a word. Reardon airily remarked,
"The man has a patience of a saint" to which Michael added, "He is smarter
than anyone gives him credit for, he's letting her be herself and letting
the world see her true colors."
Reardon nodded at the reasoning as Michael and he went back inside.
Bradford asked what that was all about to which Michael told him, "I was
merely telling Lord Young that we share a common approach to Lady Camille."
Bradford thought it over and chuckled as the two had done just that.
Over dinner, Nichole told them that she had an email from Willie telling
her that her friends' ballet recital was recorded and she should watch it.
Michael realized that they were going to get stuck doing that the following
night but Nichole reminded him that they didn't have anything else to do
that night. He reluctantly agreed with her over that but wasn't too pleased
to watch ballet.
Ophelia asked what that was about getting a simple, "I missed their
recital. Uncle Willie recorded it for me and I know Faith and Daisy were
hoping to go see it so he thought we would watch it together." Michael
added a complaining, "I was supposed to get out of going to see it."
Nichole added, "Like Aunt Valerie would let you miss it, or Courtney
wouldn't make you take her to it." She had him there. He blushed at that
last part as Nichole added for Ophelia's benefit, "That's his girlfriend."
Michael Skyped Jaimie and Miles to check up on the twins getting a happier
duo. Both informed him that the twins were still waking them up but they
were letting them fall back asleep easier once JD started to be brought
into her room. Miles added that John had heard about what Scott had seen
and was happy to get pictures, although they weren't happy that he kept a
close eye on their own projects.
They asked why David was happy when he landed to which Michael simply
shrugged and admitted, "Maybe he is in love?" Both laughed until they
realized he wasn't joking. Michael explained plainly, "Ask Hannah and
Paige, they know more about her. The way he was acting around her they may
have done something more thank kiss and cuddle." Both grinned at that then
signed off.
Nichole was eavesdropping and asked, "What did they do?" Michael bluntly
told her, "Something that could result in the next generation in November."
She nodded and added, "He really likes her" to which Michael agreed, ending
it by telling her, "We don't push either of them. They are going to have
enough trouble as it is trying to wait for one another. She could find
another man, or he could find a girl. Either way we don't push them." She
agreed, hoping Emma and David would end up together.
Chapter 5
The next day Michael and Nichole rode horses then accompanied Bradford as
he met with the planning people for final official approval. The plans were
given the thorough once-over but when Bradford boasted that the problems
were solved by an observant 17-year-old work was nearly halted. Neither of
the representatives that believed him nor did they see how he could have
solved the issues that others had given up on and refused to grant
permission to proceed.
Bradford pointed out that he had solved all of the problems by an abandoned
entrance that was part original building layout. Then he also saved a
centuries-old disused building from future demolition by repurposing it for
new use as it was the perfect size and shape for their needs. Finally, he
pointed out that it was within their own rules and regulations to allow it
to repurposed and in saving a structure that was itself historic due to its
age the plan more than met their approval and may qualify for a subsidy if
he felt so inclined to do so.
This caused the planners to scoff as the plans were more thoroughly
inspected. Bradford shook his head and pointed out, "These plans are backed
up by a prominent architectural firm and if need be we will go over your
heads and take the commission to court. Given their reputation for saving
structures doomed to be demolished while your commission has repeatedly
failed to save many structures younger than the proposed altered building
you will lose. The young man knows what he is doing, your cousins the
architects screwed up and showed how inept they truly are and where their
true intents lay."
Bradford got permission in writing then and there. The next stop was
signing the builder contracts and clearing the payments. Bradford set aside
a fee for Scott that should have gone to the new architect but was
rightfully earned by him. Michael told him to give the money to Greta and
tell her what it was for, she would know what to do with it meaning turn it
into more money for her son.
Lunch was at a pub and Michael was offered a pint to which he quickly
declined. The up until now silent Nichole told him, "Neither of his parents
drink, nor do mom, dad, Aunt Leslie, and Uncle Mark. They don't drink
anything stronger than coffee which is why mom always drinks tea with her
meals."
Michael added, "Aunt Lilly is the same way. She said that the last time she
drank anything she ended up with Claire. Uncle Roland did a number on the
family, only David and Patrick drink but they will only have one drink no
matter where they are or what they are doing." Recalling their previous
conversation Bradford understood why they didn't and was fine with letting
it drop.
At the estate, Michael and Nichole walked with Bradford to examine the old
servants' quarters more closely. They saw that it wasn't just a servants'
quarters, it was one of the estate's old carriage houses and while it did
have rooms for servants it wasn't the actual servants' quarters as was
believed. Michael asked if they had ever actually done a survey of the
grounds to check on all of their buildings to which Bradford mumbled, "That
was always the job of Harry." Michael realized what he meant by that,
giving a solemn, "You aren't to blame. You struck gold here as I know that
the interior doesn't need too much done except excavation of the interior
for the pool and plumbing. It might make an excellent office for the
estate, alongside being used as a pool by the family."
Inside the old wooden door was even more surprising, several antique cars
that were a mix of styles and colors and eye-catching. Taking a picture
Michael sent it to Junior Kelly who immediately texted back, "Those are
worth a fortune if in good condition." Michael asked if he knew what the
cars were getting back a list of names that Michael didn't recognize but
knew that Junior knew well. He loved cars and his word was as good as gold
to Michael
Bradford was in disbelief. He realized that his son Harry must have bought
them and as they were all bought with estate money they really belonged to
the estate. Michael grinned and told him, "It'll be well worth it to finish
restoring them, you might find that they have some historic value and may
be offset by subsidies. They would look great at the wedding, especially
the old Rolls Royce convertibles."
Plans were made and with the money that Michael had made the estate his
suggestion was utilized. Bradford was able to find further information
about the cars and they weren't in too bad of a shape. There was some motor
work that only an expert should look into but otherwise they were pristine.
Harry may have been a criminal but this was something that could be
overlooked.
Bradford was like a big kid looking at them. When she was told, Ophelia
remarked that they had found him a new pet project that he sorely needed.
Nichole just grinned at her grandfather's antics, remarking warmly, "Now we
know what to get him for Christmas: some petrol and oil." That sent Ophelia
into a hearty laugh as she knew that Bradford would actually put both to
good use!
Inspecting the rest of the building there were works of art and antiques
found hidden under cloth tarps. Ophelia thought she recognized some of them
and upon inspection she saw some of her deceased parents' personal
collection. She nearly cried at seeing some works she thought were lost.
Her maid informed her that she had seen them being removed by Jeffries and
his girlfriend, her former personal maid. Michael had brought her joy that
Bradford was now experiencing. This wasn't just a found jewel, this was
finding lost family heirlooms that belonged among the family's prized
posessions.
Nichole joked that if he kept at it he might uncover some gold or silver.
Michael shrugged it off then uncovered gold rings and silver necklaces in a
small box. He just kept on looking and in the dark corner he found some
intriguing bits of family history such as an old decorative crest and
shield. The more he dug into the room, the more that he felt he was finding
items that showed just why Harry wasn't worthy of being the heir- he
ignored or tried to sell his family's heritage and history right from under
Ophelia and Bradford's noses.
After getting bored and deciding this was best left to the Smiths to finish
on their own as a way of coping with Harry's betrayal, Michael climbed out
from the pile of pilfered antiques. Bradford was already seeking a tow
truck and garage that could work on the cars while Ophelia was going to
have one of the maids help her the following week sort through the items in
the building. Both could tell that this building was a blessing to the
family and it was something they would benefit from for years to come not
just with the kids but with themselves.
Michael and Nichole chose to look up in the former apartments above as the
adults looked through the pile. Inside, they found ladies' and mens'
clothes that were well over 100 years old. The closer that they looked, the
more they realized that it was the likely storage space for the old
unwanted clothes after the attic was converted into servants' quarters for
the staff.
Nichole found some dresses in her size and Michael could tell from the
expression on her face that she loved them. He called down to Ophelia to
come up and when she saw Nichole holding clothes her eyes welled up. Her
only words were, "You look like your mother Gemma when we first met her."
Ophelia hugged her tightly, crying into her shoulder as Nichole tried to
figure out what she was talking about.
Michael finally realized what she meant. He told Nichole, "I think she
means you are the spitting image of your mother when she was your age.
Uncle Nigel told us about her before, he knew her from when she was a baby
and fell in love with her as she grew older. You look like your mother."
Nichole hugged her back, telling her, "That's the nicest thing you have
said to me." Ophelia broke the embrace and asked her to see if there was
anything in her size that fit and whatever wasn't she would donate to
charity. Michael excused himself, letting Ophelia and Nichole get to
sorting the clothes and sharing that grandmother/granddaughter moment.
Downstairs, Michael had to explain what happened. Bradford beamed with
pride hearing that they had found something so important to Ophelia and
that she had broken down and seen Nichole as more than just her grandchild,
she saw the girl she never had. After a half hour the duo came down from
the old apartment with a trunk filled with clothes that Nichole could wear
that were just right for her or were a little large and she would grow into
the next year.
Getting over the emotional moment both Bradford and Ophelia looked over the
items in the carriage house floor and decided that Michael needed to be
rewarded. He insisted that it be Emma who receives the reward as she needed
it more than him. He explained bluntly, "I know my cousins had an accident
with her at least once, he isn't exactly the nimblest of people with
condoms and that thing probably sat in his wallet for years. If she should
become pregnant from their trysts please don't throw her out, let her serve
out her year of service and come with you to Boston. From there we will
help her."
Ophelia spoke for both her and Bradford by informing him, "Your aunt asked
the same thing and I gave my word. To be truthful I could never sack her
for being with child, I am fond of her and if she were younger I would have
adopted her as my own daughter. If that should happen to her then she will
be allowed to work for us until July, then we will part ways amicably. Any
member of the staff who takes issue with her is going to end up on the
street and anyone who dares to insult her will be out as well."
Bradford was stunned but he knew not to go against her. He did have to
admit that she was a bright young lady who was lovely to have around.
Nichole came back in just then, warmly adding, "Hannah and Paige will
ensure that David does the right thing or he will never father a child
again."
Both looked at her stunned but Michael nodded, adding, "They like her a lot
and they set her up with David in the hopes that they would get together. I
have heard that same warning before from Hannah. She gave it to Scott five
years ago." Nichole groaned and added, "This is one road you don't want to
go down so please don't ask."
Michael realized he screwed up but knew that he now had to continue, "Over
five years ago when dad first took in Jaimie Scott was a bully. You were
told about his abusive father, well the result of that abuse was Scott
being forced to bully everyone particularly Jaimie. Dad stopped him as he
was in the middle of attacking one April afternoon her causing him to take
her in as his foster son then getting her evaluated to find out that she
was really his foster daughter. Two months later Hannah and Bryan came to
visit and we went swimming. Scott was splashing Jaimie and was warned to
stop but when he didn't Hannah jumped in, dragged him under by his head,
then when he came up she threatened to do the same but yanking down by his
wiener. He stopped after that and was scared of her for weeks after he came
to live in Winnisimmet."
Nichole added a grim, "He stopped that day but it wasn't the last time he
bullied Jaimie. He went after her again after the town found out about
Jaimie being transgender. He beat her badly enough that she lost her
bollocks. That's why he is so quiet, he doesn't like to be out there doing
things and why he was so quick to help you. He didn't have to do all the
work for you with the pool, he wanted to show that he wasn't some brute who
hurts people when you finally found out about what he did years before."
Both looked at Michael who was nodding along to what she said. Both dropped
the matter and turned their attention to dinner and the impending arrival
of Scott and the others. Bradford asked about the recital to which Nichole
grinned and told him they had a private server where they kept their
important things like that. She added, "Uncle John still has the video of
you four way back in 6th grade."
Michael blanched as Nichole showed the video to her grandparents. They
asked who the kid with long straggly hair sitting with Michael was. He
softly muttered, "That's Jaimie before she was in dad's care. Scott and
Jessica are also there." They looked closer and they could make them out,
neither had changed much except grown taller. Nichole added, "That's not
counting the chest growths".
Michael groaned again but added, "I still have the picture of you and Cat
on the train." He showed Bradford and Ophelia, with Michael explaining, "We
were going down to Brighton and Portsmouth. Cat took a liking to Nichole
and tried to act like her." Michael added a solemn, "Uncle Nigel was still
in the hospital then, Aunt Karen was caring for him. That's why Nichole is
with us in the picture."
When the London group finally arrived Nichole informed them that Willie had
a video up to watch to which Faith and Daisy cheered. Scott groaned and
asked, "Did Stacy and Rebecca get dragged to it?" Nichole nodded, adding,
"As did Eric and dad." Jessica told him, "It's not like you have anything
else to do, you finished all your work on the drive up here."
Chef made a delightful baked salmon with roasted potatoes. The kids ate it
without saying a word and seemed to enjoy the tasty glaze that she put on
it. Dessert was trifle with strawberries getting big marks from the kids
while the teens were silent but satisfied.
They rested for an hour before bringing up the video on the lounge telly.
Nichole pointed out which girls were Kylie, Nancy, and Margaret. They
noticed that Virgil was helping out by being a background dancer, getting
odd looks until Lilly explained, "His grandparents were sick this week so
he spent much of his time with Nancy, she needed someone to practice with
so she showed him what to do. It appears that they needed someone who knew
the moves and he was the only person who could do it. He's doing well for a
beginner."
Virgil had a big smile on his face but the biggest cheers were for Nancy
who had a funny duet with the reluctant Virgil. It was all part of the
dance, his inexperience vs. her enthusiasm making the duet work. When Kylie
and Margaret danced across in a group dance their faces were slightly
different, they were focused and concentrating. In the end they all did
well and Virgil was singled out for stepping in to help at the last minute.
Bradford asked about why Nichole didn't dance too. She mumbled, "I have two
left feet and bad timing. I tried and was so bad I almost injured the other
dancers. About the only way I would have been out there was if I just had
to stand still the whole time." Ophelia sensed her frustration and
comforted her, but Nichole added, "I can't be the best at everything, at
least the girls come to me for help with just about everything else."
They talked about plans for the next day. Since it was Saturday it would be
their last day with Ophelia and Bradford. Bradford asked, "Have you
considered seeing a football match? The Pilgrims are playing at home and I
figured you might enjoy something vastly different than you've experience
at home."
Michael looked at Scott who nodded. Ethan looked at Neil who nodded as
well. Nichole wasn't too interested in seeing a football game and knew that
if you weren't too into the game you could be open for violence or worse.
Jessica and Claire thought it might be fun so they wanted in, at least to
say they were around some soccer hooligans before.
Karen and Lilly wisely said they were out. Daisy and Faith were told that
they were too young to go to a place that was so potentially dangerous.
Karen tempered any ill feelings by telling them that they would go shopping
to get some gifts for their classmates.
With that the kids and teens went off to bed. Karen and Bradford discussed
the next day to which she specifically told him, "Keep an eye on the boys.
Michael and Scott can defend themselves in multiple ways, but Neil and
Ethan haven't learned to protect themselves fully yet. Neil knows a few
ways to get away from a kidnapper but that won't work with a crowd of
people around them."
Bradford looked at her oddly. She sighed and told him, "Michael studies
martial arts and was taught to box by my uncle. Scott learned to box as
well and has taken self-defense classes with Willie and Reed. Both can be
dangerous and really hurt someone who tries to hurt the boys or girls if
need be, but they won't hurt someone unless they absolutely have to."
Bradford assured her that he'd watch them closely.
Karen made sure to have the number of Jonas Bloomfield, the family's
English solicitor, just in case it was needed. She also texted John and
Quentin that the boys were going to an English football game and that if
anything happened she would take full responsibility for what occurs. Both
texted back, "No need to worry" which did worry her. She felt like she had
pressed their luck one too many times already that trip and something bad
was bound to happen.
Everyone was up early the next morning as the teens, Ethan, and Neil went
for their run and Nichole led Daisy, Faith, and an energetic Nigel Jr.
around the grounds. Nigel Jr. finally stopped hanging on his mother and
decided he was big enough to walk with the girls. He held onto Nichole's
hand tightly and knew not to run ahead or to yank too hard on her arm. The
girls didn't mind the extra company and treated him like he was their age
even if he cut their walk short due to fatigue.
Once back inside breakfast was served with the runners eagerly digging into
the French toast and eggs. Nigel Jr. tried to emulate the girls but he
couldn't eat more than a couple of bites. Nobody said a word about that,
Karen was actually surprised that he tried the food at all.
Karen drew the line at riding horses. Nigel Jr. was too small and despite
his cries she would not allow him to ride. Karen whispered to him, "The
girls will play Thomas with you later" which got him to stop but he still
looked on with jealousy in his eyes. Bradford and Ophelia both stared in
awe as Karen had diffused a tough situation. They were still not used to
such caring regarding the kids but deferred to Karen's experience and the
fact that she is his mother.
After an hour of riding the kids bid the horses farewell while Claire
helped Marion with grooming and stabling. Michael offered a joke about her
being so close with the animals earning him an opportunity to get to know
the stalls a little better as he had to muck them out. He tried to protest
but Lilly informed him that there was no justification for the joking. She
also added, "She never teased you about trying to make money from the stock
market during your vacation, there's no need for you to be teasing her for
doing something she likes and we all agree she is going to be good at in
college."
Marion kept close watch over him to ensure he did it right, with Claire
thanking him for doing that for her. Michael and the horses stared at one
another with one sneezing on him and giving him a snort that almost sounded
like a laugh. After 20 minutes and several heavy piles transferred to a
wheelbarrow the stalls were fully mucked out and Michael was released for a
shower, apologizing profusely to Claire for being a jerk to her before.
After she came down from her shower, Karen asked Lilly why the need for the
harsh punishment. She grinned and told her sharply, "She didn't tease him
once about his fear earlier in the week, he needed his ego deflated and the
kids needed to see that they are still going to be punished for being out
of line." Karen smiled and warmly told her, "You were easier on him than I
would have been, I would have set the girls loose on him with their makeup
kit. Daisy has been itching to try it all week."
That caused Lilly to nearly fall over as Daisy came by and asked, "Can I
really do that?" Karen shook her head no, telling her, "That was only if I
had caught Michael acting up like your mom did. It's still a possibility
for them later on, though." She grumbled as she walked away, heading in to
play with Nigel Jr. and his train set as promised earlier.
Michael took a while to finish his shower and when he did come out Daisy
told him what Karen had said. His jaw dropped causing all of the others to
start laughing at him until she told them, "Any of you could be on the
receiving end as well. I might even let Nigel use it on you." That caused
the girls to stop while Neil and Ethan begged her not to do that. Scott was
stoic, but asked if she would hold off until the next weekend so they used
better quality stuff getting the others to try to agree.
Bradford was not sure if it was a big joke or she was serious. Karen turned
to him and told him, "It's serious. It's about the only serious threat that
I can give to them without crossing the line that I refuse to even
approach. It's harmless punishment but the embarrassment among themselves
is enough."
Bradford looked at the time and announced that they had to leave. Karen
told them to be on their best behavior and to let any insults slide as
there were people looking for a fight and being outsiders they were easy
targets. She quietly reiterated to Bradford to keep a close eye on the boys
and to not worry about Michael and Scott. She added, "Keep the girls
between yourself and Michael and Scott. If need be just have Michael pose
as Jessica's boyfriend and Claire as Scott's girlfriend. That should keep
most potential suitors away."
The group got into the van with Emma driving. They made good time into
Boston so they stopped for lunch at a restaurant near the grounds. Emma
parked the van and joined them for lunch with Bradford telling her that she
was going in with them. She gave him an odd look so he freely admitted, "My
wife suggested that the girls have someone with them as they go to the
toilet, and I don't rightfully believe that you should have to sit in the
van for almost three hours while we enjoy the game."
Emma tried to refuse on grounds of it being unethical to enjoy herself
while working. Bradford then quashed those sentiments by telling her,
"Before you refuse: the maids know not to complain about you receiving
special treatment. You are more than just a junior maid, you are our most
trusted maid. We know you are leaving our service and to be frank, you are
just too good to be wasted cleaning empty bedrooms and hallways. You are of
more use helping us with the children and keeping Hannah and Paige in line,
not that they need you to do that."
Bradford and Emma had a pint while the teens and boys had ginger beers and
J2O juices. Bradford asked about the choices to which Michael chimed in,
"No reason to drink the usual stuff we can get at home. Then again I don't
think you'd be drinking Moxie while you come for the wedding so maybe that
reasoning doesn't fully work."
Emma asked what he was talking about to which Claire groaned and told her,
"It's a bitter soda, almost molasses flavored, that Uncle John drinks every
year." Michael added, "Uncle Jorge also drinks it, it's a New England
thing. Dad really drinks it on grandpa and grandma's anniversary."
Bradford joked, "I see now where the phrase comes from. I guess it takes
Moxie to drink it." That got a roll of the eyes and, "Exactly what Dad
said" from Michael.
After paying for the meal, Bradford led them to the grounds and picked up
their tickets. They had good seats and thankfully for them they were next
to an aisle to they weren't boxed in. Ethan and Neil got up to snap
pictures of the grounds and the pitch then of the players as they finished
warming up. Scott kept his eyes out for trouble but didn't see anything
suspicious and finally relaxed to enjoy the festivities before the game
started.
The game went quickly but was intense throughout the first half as they
went back and forth but didn't score. Jessica and Claire were cheering
nonstop especially when there were breakaways and corner kicks. By halftime
their voices were strained which Scott told them to calm down or they'd
lose them entirely. The duo tried to ignore him but they did agree that he
was right.
Michael and Scott got some drinks for the girls, while Ethan and Neil going
to the toilet with Emma standing guard close by. The boys talked about the
match but when Neil accidentally said, "Soccer" that pissed off a few
inebriated fans nearby. The boys had to run off in fear but made it back to
Bradford, Claire, and Jessica before anything more came of it. Emma made
sure to make note of the men's faces just in case there was trouble in the
future. She hoped there wasn't any though.
The rest of the match went on with more excitement as The Pilgrims scored a
tough last minute goal in stoppage time allowing them a tough victory. The
group left quickly, not wanting to get caught in the mass of 6,700 people
leaving the intimate grounds. That plan didn't last though as they were
caught in the scrum and had to wait their chance to exit the grounds.
The problem started then as the hooligans from earlier recognized the boys
and started to insult and harass Neil for his slip of the tongue. Michael
and Scott got between them and told the boys to record the incident. Their
cameras were out and rolling as the self-appointed leader started lashing
out at them, swearing up a storm at the poor boy.
Michael instinctively got into his defense stance while Scott flexed his
fists. When one tried to grab at Michael to get him out of the way Michael
instead grabbed the guy and flipped him onto his back, landing painfully.
The next to try a go at him got the same treatment as curses started to
fling at them from the other supporters.
A third tried to go around Michael and push Scott out of the way but
instead was met by a punch to the abdomen from Scott sending him to the
pavement gasping for breath. Scott told the rest who were threatening them,
"You must be big men to try to hurt an 9-year-old boy because he didn't say
the right word. Is this how you want people to view your club? 'Don't come
to our team's match unless you say every word the way we want you to?'"
There were jeers and laughs at the hooligans as they shouted back at their
hecklers. They lost the crowd when the truth of what they were doing got
around. The hooligans were now determined to take out the two then teach
the young boy a lesson and went back after them again, getting the same
painful flip and punches from Scott and Michael. Neither teen was feeling
any fatigue but the men were dazed and gasping for breath from the blows
and falls.
The fight caught the attention of an officer who made his way over to where
Michael and Scott were standing. He was about to arrest both but was
overruled by a sergeant who observed the whole incident from close by. Neil
and Ethan then told the officer, "We have it on video, they tried to go
after us but our cousins stepped in to protect us. They struck at Michael
and Scott first, our cousins were only trying to defend themselves from the
group."
The sergeant nodded, added, "I saw the whole thing. You didn't do anything
to them." He then told the officer to arrest the four on the ground moaning
in exaggerated pain.
The hooligans threatened to sue them but were promptly told, "You can try
but seeing as they are minors and defending themselves as well as two young
children you aren't getting anywhere. As for you four, you will enjoy the
night in jail while the team revokes your tickets and bans you from the
grounds for life. Just be glad that the boys aren't likely to press charges
against you, although you would rightfully deserve another stint in
prison."
Turning to Michael and Scott he added, "From the look of those moves it
doesn't take an expert to see that you two could have seriously hurt them."
Scott freely admitted, "We could have but we would be doing a disservice to
our family and our hosts. We only defended ourselves and stopped them from
reaching our cousins, nothing more."
The sergeant then informed the officer, "Three of these boys are sons of
law enforcement." The officer knew exactly what he meant and hauled off the
four hooligans. In the police station the four fought one another over
their banishment leading to a large scuffle with officers. Or so the report
went but nobody believed that the scuffle was as bad as stated, mostly as
there were some bruised knuckles on several of the gaolers and the CCTV
feed in part of the station mysteriously cutting off just before the
scuffle broke out and saw none of the four daring to say anything further
about what had happened to them.
Bradford saw the need to calm the situation and get the boys to focus on
something else. He asked that Emma drive them to a local shopping center to
kill some time while tempers cooled. The girls grinned in excitement while
Scott and Michael tired hard not to think about what happened. The group
split up with Scott and Michael going one way, the girls going another,
while Ethan and Neil went with Emma to find some Boston United replica
shirts,particularly the home colors.
The boys found what they were looking for and decided to get small stuffed
bears with the crest and team colors as keepsakes and to get John a mug
with the team's crest as well. Neil said they should all wear the shirts
that Monday, especially as it would be a good luck charm for them during
their tests. Ethan had to agree, the trio would feel better wearing them
during the stressful test.
Bradford saw the shirts and grinned with pride, asking, "Thinking of taking
up the sport?" Both admitted, "We wanted to get something to remember the
match." He looked disappointed but knew they weren't saying no outright,
just no to the question. Ethan added, "Mom said next month if we wanted to
we could play soccer in the youth league. Junior wants to do it and Aunt
Leslie wanted to do something to get out of the house and get Marcus used
to being outdoors so we probably will play."
Bradford realized that was the best he was going to get. They were doing it
for friends and fun, not to compete and become professionals. He had to
respect their honesty and integrity, knew parental pressure regarding
sports and saw what would happen if left unchecked. The boys were just
trying to enjoy themselves and learn the sport, he could hardly fault them
and was filling with pride over realizing that.
Claire and Jessica walked over and saw their bags and giggled at them
bringing back so much. Emma thought it over and grinned, telling them,
"They will outgrow their shirts but the bears will last until they have
kids. They may be young but they are smarter than they are given credit
for." Bradford grinned in delight, the plucky young maid had gotten one
over o the girls rather easily.
Michael and Scott found a few things for themselves as well as their
friends. They had to stop at a post office to mail their packages home and
annoyed the clerk at having to send off the boxes but neither seemed to
care. The clerk saw they weren't going to be provoked so continued on in
silence with the clerk's supervisor thanking them for not allowing a
disgruntled employee to ruin their day.
Michael didn't say anything, instead just taking his receipt and telling
his mother to expect packages for him and Scott in a few days. Scott asked
why he spent so much to which Michael proudly told him, "The others aren't
so lucky and had to put up with Marcus and our parents. They deserve
something even if it's just a cheap souvenir. It's worth putting up with a
surly clerk to ensure that they get something special even if it's a cheap
trinket or stuffed animal."
The duo walked back towards the van and were met by odd looks from the
others. Scott explained where they went and why. Michael saw the girls
getting jealous but told them, "You don't have the money, I do. I wasn't
going to say it was just from me, I'm not that selfish." Claire grinned and
added, "You are the only one who hasn't had a regular job so how can we say
anything." Michael just grinned and shook his head, she had him there.
Finally, back at the estate the boys told Karen about the match and then
afterward. Michael and Scott tried to shy away but Karen told them to stay
put. They thought they would be in trouble but she hugged both deeply,
telling them she was proud of them for standing up for Ethan and Neil.
Michael and Scott quickly changed things around to get the focus off of
them and asked about their afternoon. Karen smirked and told them, "Just
packed up your clothes for you and did some of the laundry so you don't
have all of your clothes smelling like horse when you get home." Lilly
added, "And thank you for not getting them too dirty, I can't say the same
for your sister and cousin though."
Jessica and Claire immediately blanched and blushed. Both looked at Karen
oddly then grew red in embarrassment as they walked away. Ethan and Neil
asked what they were talking about getting quick, "Grass stains" from Lilly
and Karen with a crooked smirk from Ophelia. She in turn directed the boys
upstairs while Karen discretely told them, "That was to cut you off before
you embarrassed them more. I know you two ran out of clean underwear so
check your bags for what I found for you."
Karen was stone-faced as they left then finally started laughing. Lilly
asked her warmly, "That should keep them happy for a while. They won't ask
about where those came from nor will they tease the boys. You really are
devious sometimes." Karen countered with, "The girls did deserve some small
treat and we needed a plausible reason for them getting it. The
embarrassment and quick exit of the boys was just a little extra."
Ophelia asked if she did that a lot getting a nod and simple, "It's a way
of staying on top of the girls' actions. They are good but they can easily
take advantage of us. They also are about to have their visits but now they
also know that we care about them enough to let them wear adult lingerie."
Chapter 6
The kids kept busy in the nursery while the teens packed and finished any
assignments that they still had left over. After a while they made their
way down to the lounge and joined the adults in relaxing. Michael asked if
Karen was going to be bored without Nigel and the kids during April
vacation, getting a nod and soft, "You know that you and your siblings will
manage to come by and Marcus will always need some attention. Plus the
twins will be dropping in to ensure I didn't relax too much."
Scott and Jessica grinned at one another and announced, "Mom said that you
had that week off as well. There wasn't much reason for you to stay home
when there weren't any scheduled meetings. Uncle James is taking your few
meetings so you can go too and Aunt Gabby said that they should upgrade the
computers that week since it's a slower period anyway. Rachel is helping
her do it so you don't have to do anything in the office at all so you can
go too."
Karen was speechless. Claire added, "Uncle Nigel asked them to do that for
you as you didn't get much of a vacation this week with us. He knows that
you aren't going to be able to relax until Brent comes home so you would
need a real vacation then. It's already confirmed and paid for by Uncle
John, he just wanted us to hold off telling you until now so you didn't
talk him out of it."
Karen tried to refuse but Lilly added, "James also said that he purposely
scheduled it as a light week for you because you would refuse. Both of your
bosses are in agreement so take the week off." She looked over at the
others and saw them all giving her pleading looks. Ophelia told her
sharply, "Just agree, they won't let you get out of it. You will be able to
enjoy yourself more and hopefully be able to swim in the pool by then so
you'll be fully relaxed and have a proper vacation."
Scott told her, "No bikinis though" getting laughs from the teens. Karen
smirked and added, "Guess who just volunteered for a makeover session for
the girls!" Scott's face went as white as a sheet as Ophelia started to
laugh. Bradford couldn't hold back as he realized she was serious. Scott
though gave a nod to Karen as she heard the girls giggling and bouncing
around anxiously waiting for dinner.
Dinner was served but the family was quiet. Chef was showing off her skills
again and made a roast beef with ratatouille for them. Karen pulled Chef
aside and asked if she was going to go along with Bradford and Ophelia
getting a nod and quick, "I'm taking time off then to visit family up in
Scotland."
Karen grinned, asking, "Your parents will be happy to see you and the teens
will be thrilled to meet them when John takes them up there. Can they make
a haggis meal? The teens are owed some as their punishment. I want them to
get a little taste of traditional Scotland as they have been pretty funny
about the cooking." Chef grinned and proudly told her, "They have an old
family recipe, I doubt the teens will dislike it. Nobody who has eaten it
has."
Karen grinned as chef beamed with pride over doing something so simple yet
meant a lot to Karen and her brother. Karen added, "John will be pleased to
tell your family about how you really are, as will the twins and Miles.
They won't be happy over being forced to eat haggis but knowing that you
set them up for it will cause any offense to dissipate. It'll mean a lot to
them, especially as a dose of humility."
After a hearty dessert of tarts the group retired to the lounge with Nigel
Jr. quickly falling asleep in Michael's lap before being taken upstairs to
his crib. After a quiet evening of watching the telly as the girls played
dolls in the nursery the reality that the trip was over finally set. The
kids looked sad but still had some energy in them which Karen pounced on to
alleviate their impending sleepless night.
Karen informed Daisy and Faith that Scott had volunteered to let them
practice with the makeup kit. Scott stoically got up and walked to the
girls' room and let them practice on him, not saying a word as they took
out Nichole's practice makeup set and used the various shades of colors to
make him look like a cross between a clown and as as Ophelia snickered, a
streetwalker. He didn't say a word, letting them have their way with his
face while giggling and whispering semi-loudly.
After 15 minutes they declared themselves finished. They brought Scott down
and waited for Karen and Lilly to take pictures. Both looked him over and
declared him to be fine and his small punishment over. Scott dutifully
accepted makeup removal wipes from his sister, grinning as he said he
looked a lot better in it than they did.
Ophelia asked if it was necessary to which Karen said, "No, but the girls
were a bundle of energy and needed some sort of quick release. Scott knew
what he was doing and did it anyway, for their benefit, knowing that they
would be exhausted on Monday if they didn't release the energy now. There
was little chance of them sleeping tonight otherwise." Bradford slapped his
back in respect, he took a blow to his masculinity for the sake of his
family. To him that was a bold move and worthy of respect.
Once finished with all of the picture taking the kids went up to bed
followed by the teens. Karen and Lilly waited until the youngsters were
asleep before talking with Bradford and Ophelia. She asked what their plans
were for the wedding getting no response from them.
Karen informed them, "The 11 of us are invited to a gathering at Governor
James' home in Endicott for their Independence Day celebration. You are
invited to go along as part of our family as the twins and their fiances
are going to be the guests of honor and we expect some dignitaries to be
there along with a few members of our family."
Bradford asked what it was for getting a grin and quick, "He holds a
gathering every year. We normally don't attend out of respect for the
governor and staying away from politics but this year our family was
intertwined with his family, especially this past month. You are going to
be in Boston anyway, it would be impolite to not invite you."
Both agreed to go with Ophelia asking, "How does he know you?" Karen
grinned and told her, "John and Jaimie met him nearly five years ago and he
was impressed by Jaimie's candid honesty and. He then started to meet the
other members of the family and earn their respect as well them earning
his. Things changed when Sheila, was asked to care for Avery, his
granddaughter and Raul Rodriguez's girlfriend. Avery is now Sheila's new
sister as his daughter Ruth adopted Sheila in the same way Scott and Ethan
were adopted as our sons. Sheila was Ruth's and his son Paul's goddaughter.
Finally his three eldest granddaughters are now friends with Hannah and
Paige as well as Jessica, Claire, and the other girls so there is a lot of
intermingling going on."
Bradford joked, "Your family tree would need to be in 3-D rather than flat
with that kind of closeness." Lilly chuckled and told him pointedly, "You
have no idea how close to the truth that is. We are finding links to one
another that were completely arbitrary but fitting like Miles being the
long lost nephew of my sister Melanie who is John's oldest and dearest
friend and was asked to foster then adopt Miles. And last summer we found
out about Jaimie being related to Michael, Neil, and Faith through their
great grandparents, Michael, Neil, and Faith's grandmother was a McKinnon."
Karen grinned and added, "There were other surprises like Kennedy being our
uncle Sean Beretta's niece or Kylie, Reed, and Willie Jr. being my Uncle
Jorge's great-niece and nephews, even Louis Reagan and Joshua Raymond being
cousins. The family grew and by chance branched out all over the place. The
more members that find themselves being part of us the more connections are
found and made."
Lilly asked Ophelia softly, "How do you see the family now that you have
experienced us under almost normal circumstances? Well the whole being on
vacation thing aside." Ophelia had to think hard about that. Bradford
answered first telling her pointedly and authoritatively, "You aren't some
group of poor, uneducated, undisciplined peasants. You care about one
another and you have more class than most of the nobles I have met. The
children love you deeply and listen to you without question. You didn't
have to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on public schools to get them
that way either."
Ophelia nodded in agreement. Her own opinion was, "We need only look at
Ethan and Nichole to see just how much of a good influence your family is
on people. Ethan has only been with you just over four months and he is
practically a new boy. Nichole is comfortable with herself and the girls
see her as someone to follow in the footsteps of and the way Nigel Jr. acts
it is clear that he will be doing the same. The old ways of treating
children like second class family members meant to be seen and not heard
are dying a slow death and we need people like you to help bring the past
to an end. Our legacy is safe with your hands and we could not be prouder."
Bradford sighed and added, "We will miss them but we know that you are
making every effort to keep us involved. We could easily visit you just as
you visit us so they aren't going long without seeing us." Lilly added a
soft, "There is always a place for you to stay if you visit. Granted it's
about 25 miles away from us but it's a place to your liking. The owner will
gladly allow you to stay there during visits, but I think you'd need one or
two of your staff to help you out."
Karen looked at her oddly then smacked her head with a laugh. She admitted,
"She's saying to you that her niece Sheila is going to let you stay in her
former home whenever you visit. It's unused but it's comfortable for
someone of your standing. And the neighbors are good people." Lilly added,
"Sheila's new grandfather, the governor, lives next door."
Bradford and Ophelia thanked them for the offer and headed up to bed. Lilly
and Karen did some final packing, leaving out the kids' clothes for the
next day while packing everything that they needed to take with them. The
two whispered to one another, "They were angels this trip. I hope they
don't have any problems getting back into the groove of being in school. I
know it was tough last time on Ethan."
The two finally went to bed. Ethan and Neil were actually awake and heard
them talking and tried hard not to move. They both whispered, "This was the
best" with Ethan adding, "I just wish Junior was here too." Neil summed it
up by saying, "He feels the same but he never sees his grandmother except
during vacations, we have all this family but he only has his dad and
grandmother."
In the morning the kids showered and changed before breakfast. Each of them
packed their suitcase and gathered their personal items. Nigel Jr. was
reluctant to part with his Thomas set but Karen assured him, "Daddy has one
ready for you at home and Cat and JD are waiting to play with it. They
waited for you to come back before setting it up." He looked up at her to
see if she was lying but she showed a picture to him of them holding it,
ready for him to open and assemble. He practically knocked her over as he
hugged her, forcing Emma to have to grab her before she fell.
Emma brought the bags down to the van and Land Rover after doing a quick
pickup from the estate's laundry room. The family ate in silence as they
each contemplated the trip home. Bradford was the first to speak, informing
them that he and Ophelia would drive with them down to the airport so they
didn't feel compressed in the van and Land Rover. Ophelia added, "Lilly and
the four teens are upgraded to first class at our expense. Sorry that we
couldn't do it for the young kids." Nichole spoke for the kids by adding,
"That's alright, we will be fine with mom."
Bradford and Ophelia drove the Rolls Royce with Nichole and Ethan riding in
with them. Emma drove Scott, Jessica, and Claire in the Land Rover while
Karen drove the others in the van. Ophelia asked her grandchildren if they
had fun getting a solemn, "Yes" from them. Ophelia asked if they were
alright, Ethan told her, "We are just trying to not think about going home.
We know it's going to be tough but we will be back soon." Nichole added,
"It's just going to be so boring doing tests all week with other subject
sandwiched in between."
In the van Lilly asked the same question, getting the same response from
Michael and the kids. Karen knew that they were holding back because it was
the end of their vacation. She pressed them further asking, "What are you
going to tell your classmates?" getting solemn, "We were told by Ms. May
not to say much of anything about our trip because it would make others
believe our lies."
Lilly shook her head and sharply told them, "Don't worry about telling the
kids about your trip. If they are going to brag and be encouraged to talk
about their vacations then you two are going to talk about yours. You were
given the opportunity to do something fun and interesting that most of them
will never do and you should not be ashamed of it. Tell them if you are
asked, tell them the truth and do not lie or exaggerate. If Ms. May has a
problem with that then she will have to explain to me why she has a problem
with you doing the same thing that the other kids are doing."
Karen asked if she was going to drop them off the next morning getting a
quick nod. Karen asked if Deborah was ready getting the same nod. She then
grinned as she added, "Ms. May is going to be in for a surprise, I can
guarantee you that."
In the Land Rover, Emma was asked if she missed David. She sighed and told
them, "I do. I never felt like that about anyone before. I am not a fool, I
know it was just a fleeting moment of passion and he will find someone
else. I just hope that he enjoyed his time as much as I did."
Claire sighed and admitted, "He likes you too. He more than likes you, he
probably loves you. He won't find another girl. He never goes out and he
doesn't hang out at bars or other places where ladies are. His friends have
given up trying to set him up with anyone as he just doesn't want to date.
Hannah and Paige wanted you two together because they want you to find
someone who needs someone as much as he needed someone. It worked, he is in
love with you."
Emma had tears forming in her eyes. Claire knew she hit her hard so she
added, "Consider coming to the US for school. You have a place at
university here but you would do well over in the US near us. You have
friends in Hannah and Paige, and you won't be alone either. Deborah will be
there as well and I know mom and Uncle John won't let you get out of
joining us."
The three vehicles finally pulled into the airport and saw Emma and Karen
checking the bags as Lilly sorted their carry-ons. Emma made her excuses as
she went to return the van but was stopped by Lilly who gave her a big hug
and whispered to her, "I know my son, if he truly cares about you he will
wait for you and if he caused you to be with child he will do the right
thing. I am not happy at him being so mature but I am glad that you are a
smart and caring young woman and made him happy. We won't let him do
anything stupid."
Emma had to hide her tears as she drove off. Lilly gathered her wits and
said her goodbyes to Bradford and Ophelia. Karen did the same with the
children slowly hugging them goodbye. Ophelia left them with one last word,
"Be good for Karen and Lilly" getting smiles and nods as they entered the
security queue.
Karen and Lilly parted ways as Lilly and the teens went into the first
class lounge. Daisy and Faith were surprised when Karen told them they
should get something for Ms. May adding, "She would appreciate the gift."
Both gave her an odd look but knew she was right, although both doubted
their teacher would care for the gift anyway.
After boarding their plane the kids eagerly played on their iPad and and
left Karen to relax and enjoy the in-flight entertainment. Nigel Jr. took
the opportunity to nap while Nichole carefully made plans for the week with
Kylie, Nancy, and Margaret. The trio would want to spend time with her and
she needed to think about what they could do that didn't involve her
dancing.
The teens, meanwhile, enjoyed the personal service and meal, to which Lilly
told them, "You are still too young so don't bother with the wine." Scott
looked at her to which she added, "Did you think that he wouldn't say that
you asked for a pint?" Scott mumbled, "I kept my mouth shut about him and
Emma spending the night, I thought he'd do the same about the pint." Lilly
smirked and added, "He knows better, and I wouldn't have let you go with
him if I didn't think he would react exactly as he did."
After what seemed like what was twice as long of a flight to the kids they
finally landed in Boston. David was working in the international arrivals
and had to duck away before his mother saw him. Daisy called him out,
though, forcing him to come over and face the music. Lilly just hugged him
and told him, "Don't do anything stupid to break her heart." He didn't say
anything, just nodded silently. Claire though added, "She likes you, a
lot."
David went back to work as the group were met by Leslie, Mark, Marcus,
Nigel, John, Valerie, JD, Cat, Greta, Deborah, and Patrick. Nigel Jr.
immediately ran for his father, hugging him tight. Cat and JD went for
Michael, doing the same. Both looked up at him and asked, "Did you bring us
anything?" getting a laugh from the others. It was clear to all of them
that they were back to normal after their tough, emotionally charged week.
Marcus let out a cry for attention from the newly arrived. Karen lifted him
up getting a gas bubble to release with Marcus giving a smile to her. She
grinned and told him, "Nice to see you again too."
The drive home was mostly in silence as they all knew the inquisition was
coming once they were at the Finn home. As expected, the teens were there
as were the girls, Junior, and Virgil. John and Valerie had to shoo them
away so they could get their bags up to Michael's room. The twins wouldn't
leave his side, even going so far as to try to drag one of the bags inside
to no avail.
Dinner was served to which Ethan, Daisy, Nichole, Faith, and Neil dug into
eagerly. The others did the same but slower, telling the kids to slow down
but knowing they were hungry from the anxiety. Nigel Jr. was the only one
who didn't want to eat, instead hanging onto Nigel who kept trying to get
him to eat but failing each time.
With the meal out of the way Neil and Ethan gave Junior his Boston United
shirt and John his mug then showed off their bears. Daisy and Faith showed
off their dolls while Nigel Jr. complained about leaving his Thomas set.
The teens were interested in what they got but Michael informed them that
their gifts weren't coming for a few more days.
Marcus made a loud cry for attention which prompted Karen to give it to him
again. John complained loudly, "Oh sure, he doesn't see you in over a week
and stops crying and smiles at you as soon as you pick him up but I come
within a foot of him and he screams bloody murder!" The kids giggled as
Marcus fell asleep in Karen's arms looking at John while John pouted.
The teens were told it was time to go home with all but Daisy, Claire, and
Ethan leaving. Faith and Neil hugged and kissed Lilly and Karen goodbye as
Deborah and Patrick led them back to their house to await their parents
returning from visiting Brent. Both kids knew that seeing him was more
important than anything and were happy that Brent seemed to be getting
better.
Jaimie and Miles put Cat and JD to bed while leading Michael to his room
for a talk. Jaimie hugged him tightly, thanking him for letting her sleep
in his room. Miles did the same, telling him, "They were up early begging
mom to tell them when you were coming home." Michael tried to act like it
was nothing but sat down on the bed and told them, "I missed them too. I
hope they aren't too upset when I stay in London this summer."
The teens looked at him in disbelief. Michael explained the offer and what
it meant to Bradford. Miles knew it was too important to pass up and that
Michael wouldn't have agreed if there was something else going on. Jaimie
asked him, "Is she going too?" Michael nodded, explaining, "Aunt Karen is
going to ask Aunt Gabby for her to be allowed to go too. We won't be alone,
Deborah and Patrick are going to be our guardians while there. I'm going to
be busy but we will have plenty of time to get out and enjoy ourselves. And
no, we won't be having sex while there. I love her too much to do that to
her and I don't wan to disappoint mom and dad or upset Aunt Gabby trying to
do that with Courtney."
David came by after his shift ended and sought out his mother and Aunts as
he knew he would have to explain his week to them. He was relieved that
Patrick and Deborah weren't there but knew they would know anyhow through
Claire. Lilly didn't say anything and Karen just gave him a look of pride
but Claire asked him about his weekend.
David drew a deep breath then explained, "I got back with a couple of hours
to spare so I unpacked and cooked. Deborah and Patrick cornered me and
asked about the trip but she immediately knew that something was up. She
made me come clean, threatening to have Hannah and Paige come over to get
it out of me. The twins were awaiting word from her, they would come over
if I didn't tell her there."
John asked what was going on only to get a quick, "Listen to him first."
David continued, "I told them about Emma and what we did. I told her that I
said we'd pick things up in July if we were both still available. Deborah
asked about her and told me that I had better not screw it up or Hannah and
Paige would have me drawn and quartered. From the look she gave me I think
she is serious!"
John then asked again to which David told him, "Hannah and Paige set me up
with Lord and Lady Smith's junior maid Emma. They wanted her to get away
from England and come here and thought that going out with me during the
week she would do that. I don't know if that's what happened but she and I
got close during the trip."
Lilly laughed and added, "Any closer and you would be a chimera. If they
weren't careful the twins will ensure that he is drawn and quartered along
with castrated and beaten senseless." John gave her an odd look to which
Lilly added, "For someone who is a teacher you are pretty dim at times. Do
the math."
John finally realized what she meant, blushing in embarrassment then
adding, "If that happened then you know what to do. I may go easy on you
but Dan won't." David's face went pale as Dan Lopez started to crack his
knuckles in a show of force.
David sighed and told them, "I told her that I would do what is right even
if it means giving up my single life. She is worth it. We were safe, we
used condoms each time. I just hope that she doesn't get fired for
something we both did."
John took pity on him and told him, "She won't be left out in the cold. You
have a home and she has a scholarship thanks to Hannah. She has a future
even if you two don't work out. The fact that you were man enough to
consider the consequences and offer to do the right thing is enough to know
that you are not going to be like your mother or my brother. You were
raised right and the way the twins were both talking about her I think you
do have a future with her."
With that Leslie, Mark, Melanie, and Dan got up to leave. Karen reluctantly
gave up Marcus who woke up again and who seemed to give John a glare as he
came into view. Dan gave David a slap on the back but didn't say anything,
David got the message though- he was proud of him.
When the others were gone Lilly wasted no time in informing John and
Valerie, "The girls are going to have it rough tomorrow. Their teacher, Ms.
May, is being a obnoxiously rude towards them and refuses to believe that
they went to England and that they stayed with the Smiths. I don't know how
to handle her, she hasn't crossed over the line directly yet but she is
constantly putting the kids down and making them uncomfortable. I don't
want Faith to start feeling like she felt in Missouri."
John smirked and announced, "I'll have a talk with their principal tomorrow
morning. Ms. May is up for review and could be let go. She hasn't had a
warning before but considering that she was hired by Ms. Mead before she
got herself a promotion she deserves a closer inspection. If anything comes
from it, she will be watched closely next year and given that Valerie and I
are going to be parents of students in the school the principal won't
hesitate to remove her from the classroom. You know I hate using our
influence but this is one of the times that it is needed, for the girls'
sake."
Karen told her to lay out what the girls will say and then show evidence.
They have the gifts for their classmates and Ms. May, they also have the
photos of the different places they visited. Valerie added, "You need to be
there, you should greet Ms. May so she knows that you aren't fooling around
regarding the girls. Plus, I do believe that Lilly already let her know
that you know Yvette." Valerie's grin told Karen all she needed to know,
they were going to entrap her for being foolish and ensure that the real
attitude of the teacher was shown.
Karen looked at the time and got their bags. Ethan asked John if he was
happy with the pictures getting a big grin and, "You helped out your
cousins out a lot. And if you want I'll pay you back with a long-awaited
trip to Connecticut to see the air museum in Windsor Locks. And Neil will
like the stop in Danbury or East Haven for the railway museums. We can make
a weekend of it, just the three of us. Four if Junior wants to go too."
In the morning, the kids were eager to get back to school. Michael and
Courtney kissed deeply when they met outside the high school. Scott
immediately did the same to Stacy as Eric and Will just grinned and waited
for their girlfriends to grab them and kiss them the same way. Jake
Bollinger, their principal and Will's father as well as Courtney's uncle,
stopped them by reminding them that they were only gone a week not a year.
All eight blushed as their friends giggled at them being playfully
chastised.
Their presentation to John was flawless and the other groups were jealous
that they got to do their project as a more hands-on approach. John had to
diffuse things by explaining, "I had them do their project the way they did
to ensure that they actually did the work instead of putting a minimal
amount of effort. They did better than I expected, although I know they
aren't too happy with taking time out of their schedule to visit a museum
that only the younger kids actually enjoyed." That got a laugh but ensured
that all discussion ended.
Scott's drafting and architecture teacher was surprised at Scott finding
and finishing his project so quickly. When he looked over the notes and
what was done he thought Scott made it up until he was shown that work had
just started on the project hours before. Bradford even sent the teacher an
email outlining what was done and what Scott contributed, asking that he
get some additional credit for also saving a historic structure. Scott was
given an A+ for the project, and was assured that there was no way that he
would fail as he had done more in one week than would be done in the rest
of the semester.
At the elementary school complex, Junior, Neil and Ethan wore their Boston
United shirts with pride. Thy gave their teacher Mr. King his gift followed
by the rest of the class. He grinned with pride at the boys giving him a
small bear with the Boston United crest, saying he'd take it home for
safekeeping and put in a place of prominence in his home office. They also
produced some things that they had said they would bring back, including an
empty bottle of fruit squeeze and a bag of crisps. They also had pictures
of kilometers but they hadn't printed them out yet. Mr. King beamed with
pride over following his one request of them.
Their classmates were happy to receive their small London bears and loved
hearing about the visits to places they had seen on TV. Mr. King took the
time to show the places on a map and showed what they used to look like
getting the kids interested before telling them they had to work on their
MCAS tests. He also quietly told them, "I am proud of you for thinking
about the others. It means a lot to them even if they didn't say it."
Nichole fared better. The girls were happy to listen to her talk about the
week especially hearing that they watched the recital. They didn't know
that Willie had recorded it nor that he had posted it online to the server
for them to see. The girls gave her the gossip about the week especially
Virgil acting as their younger brother. Nancy's father Todd was happy to
have a boy to watch the Celtics and Bruins games with, with James
considering getting them tickets to a game. James and Todd got along great,
with Todd feeling like part of the family more and not just Nancy's father.
Virgil's part in the recital led to them telling her that Virgil was great
at dancing and may join them for ballet in the future. Nichole was jealous
but knew she was too uncoordinated to dance with them. She did admit, "You
know I'd do the same for you if you need it. I can't dance but I would
still try to help you." The girls hugged her for that, knowing that it was
meant to show that she was alright with them doing something that she
couldn't do.
Over at the Early Learning Center Daisy and Faith's friends and classmates
eagerly asked about the trip. Both produced their gifts to their classmates
with each saying, "We had fun and learned a lot." The fact that their gifts
were from London and still had the price tags on were enough for the kids
to accept that they had really gone to England without question.
Inside their classroom, Ms. May wasn't the least bit pleased to see the
kids with their gifts. She tried to corral the girls and get them to stop
talking about the trip to which both girls complied but the others didn't.
She eventually told them to stop talking about the vacation and pay
attention leading to all class discussion to cease.
The day dragged on and the last hour and a half the kids were informed that
they would now be able to discuss their vacation. This was interrupted by
the principal coming in with Valerie, Karen, Lilly, and to their shock-
Sarah. The principal informed Ms. May, "I am aware that you are going to
discuss the previous week and I wanted to listen to the children speak. My
four guests are here to do the same."
Faith and Daisy looked surprised to see their aunts and moms but grinned at
knowing that things were going to be interesting when their time came. They
felt though that they may not get the chance given that the teacher was
slowing the kids down on purpose.
Eventually the time did come for Daisy and Faith to speak. Ms. May looked
up at the time and tried to cancel their presentation claiming that they
needed to end the day. That didn't sit well with the principal who then
told them to continue anyway, much to Ms. May's frustration.
The girls told about all of the things they had seen, the places they had
visited, who they met, and what they had done. They showed the brochures
from the different locations proving they went there while talking about
them. They happily told the others, "We met a baroness, a viscountess, a
countess, a marquess, and a marchioness. We got to visit the US Embassy and
meet the ambassador and his wife."
Ms. May didn't believe a word that they had said. She sharply told them,
"Where did you come up with these tales? You met nobles? And were treated
as guests at the embassy? I find it hard to believe that you would do any
of those things."
Their principal looked to Karen who nodded. Their principal sharply told
the woman, "That was no line. None of what they had told you is false. I
was shown the pictures of everywhere that they went and who they had met
with and I can assure you that these girls were where they said they went
and met who they said they met."
Ms. May tried to again to demean them claiming they would not have met any
nobles. Lilly and Valerie burst into laughter to which Karen told her,
"Don't be so sure about that. My mother and father-in-law wouldn't like it
known that you talked in such a manner to the girls. By the way, Ms. May,
my name is Lady Karen Smith, the Countess of Boston and the patron of their
trip. My mother and father-in-law are the Marquess and Marchioness of
Lincoln and it was at their estate that the girls stayed for the week. And
just for the record, my husband is the Earl of Boston and heir to the
marquessdom, my younger son is The Earl of Frampton, my eldest son in the
future Viscount of Braintree, and my future son-in-law is the Baron of
Gosfield. Sadly, my youngest son will only get his own title, that of the
Earl of Boston, when my husband inherits his father's title."
Valerie added, "Before you claim otherwise, my sister is not lying. You may
choose to be ignorant but one thing is for sure- she is telling the full
truth. And the girls did, indeed, visit the US Embassy. In fact, the
ambassador is Karen's father's longtime friend and brother in all but blood
and his wife is Karen's eldest son and daughter's cousin. He is family to
us and hosted them for the evening."
Ms. May was going to say something but Valerie added, "Sorry for not
introducing myself, my name is Valerie Finn. I am sure that my sister Lilly
has told you about my husband as well as Karen's longtime best friend
Yvette." Ms. May's face went red as she realized she was in deep trouble to
which the principal added, "Girls, you did a wonderful job and deserve
praise for trying to learn during your trip as well as bringing back such
lovely gifts for your fellow students and teacher."
The kids left as the bell rang with Daisy and Faith hugging their aunts.
Outside, Ms. May sulked as her colleague told her, "You stepped over the
line and let personal feelings get in the way of your teaching. If you
don't smarten up by the end of the year there is no doubt that you'll be
gone. The only thing that will save you is if someone has to quickly retire
making you indispensable. But you will still be on probation for another
year at that. I am sure you probably figured it out but just in case- you
don't mess with the Finns, not with John knowing that you are gunning for
those girls. He protects kids especially his family. Just don't say I
didn't warn you when you do screw up."
Valerie and the principal talked as Daisy and Faith played with Virgil.
Valerie smiled as they talked with the principal asking, "I've heard
stories about your twins, are they really that bad?" Karen snorted then
told her, "You remember Bryan and Hannah from when you taught them, Cat is
much worse. They won't give you any real problems, but they will not
hesitate to step in to help someone that they care about especially if they
know that they are right in doing something."
The group disbursed as Karen gave the girls hugs. At home the kids unwound
as the teens checked in on them. Ethan, Faith, Daisy, Nichole, and Neil
were all smiles and happy to talk about anything. They were asked question
after question with the toughest ones coming from Patrick who insisted on
asking, "What did you do to David? He hasn't been the same since he left!"
Anyone in earshot shouted back, "He's in love!" Patrick was startled and
didn't quite understand what was going on. Deborah had to explain it to
him, "Take a look in the mirror. This is how you acted three weeks ago."
Patrick's face went red as he realized what was happening now. The others
shook their heads as Claire quietly asked Daisy, "Are you sure he's your
brother? He seems to be the only one who doesn't have a clue at times."
Lilly sat back grinning and didn't say a word. The kids and teens were all
talking to one another animatedly and for the first time in two weeks they
were enjoying themselves. Karen sat beside her and spoke what Lilly was
thinking, "They may not be related but they are family and they love one
another." Lilly nodded silently, before adding, "You can't choose your
relatives but you can choose your family. I finally see what your mom meant
by seeing us as daughters to her. We are family.
The End.
