Mother suggested I take a shower and come back down for breakfast,
which sounded like a wonderful idea. I scrubbed the makeup off my face
and washed my hair, letting the shampoo bubbles flow over my girl
parts. Part of me was pleased that I hadn't changed back, but part of
me was furious.
As I sat down to enjoy the breakfast mother had for made me, my phone
rang. I didn't recognize the number so I didn't answer. Then a sharp
pain ripped through me and I heard Daphne 's voice in my head telling
me to answer the phone.
"OK Andi, listen up," she said. "I've been put in charge of your
appearance. So I called a friend of my mother's who owns a hair salon.
With classes starting tomorrow, we don't have much time. First
impressions are critical. We'll meet you there at 10:00."
"To be honest," I said, "I'm not ready for this." The sharp pain tore
through me again. It looked like I didn't have a choice.
When I arrived at the salon all three girls were waiting for me. Daphne
gave instructions to the stylist. "She needs hilights and a cute cut
for the beginning of school. Plus, tryouts for the pom squad are on
Wednesday."
"I'll be dammed if I'm going to try out for the pom squad. Never!" I
said.
Daphne smiled. "Never say never Andi. Life is too short."
As I sat staring at the mirror another sharp pain tore through my head.
It was Gabriela in my head this time.
"Practice smiling," the voice said. "A cute smile is a girl's strongest
asset."
I smiled at myself in the mirror. Another pain.
"Show your teeth. Your smile should always look natural and not forced.
It should come from a place deep inside your heart and shine from your
eyes."
I smiled a dozen different ways. The stylist asked if anything was
wrong.
"I'm practicing smiling," I answered honestly.
"That's so smart," she replied. "All the makeup in the world won't make
a girl as pretty as a nice smile."
I smiled some more. "You have a very pretty smile," the stylist said as
she coated my hair with some foul smelling paste.
The hair styling, manicure and eyebrow shaping took forever, but I have
to say the results were worth the time. "damn, I look good," I said.
Chloe texted a picture to my mother. Who texted back several heart
emojis.
"Am I done now?" I asked rather petulantly as we exited the salon.
Another sharp pain.
"Look Andi," Daphne snarled "you might think the sun and earth revolve
around you, but we have lives too and you have put everything at risk.
Including your mother."
"My mother? What does she have to do with this?"
Chloe glared at Daphne.
"You know Andi," Chloe whispered as we walked through the mall, "we've
been given the ability to do more than just cause a little pain, if you
don't improve your attitude and show a little gratitude."
"What the fuck is that supposed to mean," I demanded. I found out the
answer moments later I found myself singing "I'm the prettiest girl in
the whole wide world", dancing a pirouette and rushing up to a teenage
boy that was passing, kissing him hard on the lips and asking "Do you
think I'm cute?"". All while the girls laughed themselves silly.
"Ignore her," Gabriella told the boy, "she doesn't get out much." The
boy didn't leave at first, perhaps waiting to see what would happen
next. Finally Gabriella said "Leave!" and he took the hint.
"What just happened?" I asked, still dazed. "How - Why did I do that?"
"Maybe because you really wanted to," Chloe responded.The girls laughed
some more. After that I gave up arguing altogether. The girls helped me
buy some makeup and skin products and one by one they left to get ready
for the big day ahead, until it was just Chloe and me left.
"Tell me the truth," I asked her. "What does my mother have to do with
all of this?"
Chloe gave me an innocent look. "That's between you and your mother. At
least it was until you embarrassed us all in front Aphrodite."
"And why do you have the power to make me do something I don't want to?
Like you did earlier when I kissed that strange boy."
"Because you're an idiot. No, that's not fair. Because you keep
fighting, when the cat is already out of the bag. It's obvious to
everybody, especially your mother, that you're happier as a girl. Why
don't you just admit it and save us all a lot of irritation. Do you
want a ride home?"
I nodded. The drive home was silent except for the music from the
radio.
"See ya tomorrow," Chloe said. I went inside and gave my mother a hug.
"Am I an idiot?" I asked her as I got ready for bed.
"Sometimes," she said, smiling.."Now don't forget to use the
moisturizing cream after you wash off the makeup."
"OK, Moma," I said as I kissed her.
The next day at school was a bit overwhelming. I got occasional
reminders from the girls to smile or look people in the eye. (Or
sometimes not to look someone in the eye) If I was slow to respond, I
found my body acting without me. I auditioned for the pom squad, and
Daphne took over my body when I wanted to give up. I made the team, and
after a few weeks I found I was doing everything on my own fairly
naturally. With only a little reminding and coaching.
One evening a month or so later, Mom and I were relaxing on the porch
watching the sun set.
"Mom," I asked, "if I hadn't been happy as a girl, would you have
changed me back if I asked? Or was that impossible when I angered
Aphrodite?"
She smiled. "I would have done what I could," she said, "and I like to
think I have a little sway with the goddess. Like I always tell you -
Nothing is more important to a mother than her child's happiness. Do
you want me to try now?"
"Oh my god mother," I said in mock horror, "you would do that? Turn me
into a stinking boy? Are you crazy? Then what would I do with all my
nice clothes?"
She kissed me on top of the head. "Because really," she said grinning,
"just say the word."
I didn't even respond. I guess it's true Mothers know best.
