Once I was a young boy named Andrew, or Andy for short. Then I was a
young girl named Andi, which I wrote with a heart instead of a dot
above the I. Then I was a boy again, and now, I am dead. Life is full
of surprises, or at least it was. I try to remember how I got to this
point. I remember coming home from school accompanied by my
grandmother, and rushing up to the bathroom. Having a period was still
a strange event to me.
The blood in the toilet, as it had every month since the
transformation, filled me with more emotions than one human being
should be asked to contain. The feelings overlapped like waves at the
beach. At first it filled me with fear and anger - a feeling that I
powerless in the face of my new biology, but now it also elicited a
feeling of connection. A connection to what, exactly I can't quite say
yet, but something bigger than myself - maybe a connection to life
itself that I had never felt when I was a boy. I wondered if I would
still feel that connection if I was ever changed back. Probably not, I
thought, and I think I would miss it.
My grandmother, who was both a stranger to me and yet not a stranger,
was in the kitchen looking for something to cook for me. "Your mother's
kitchen seems oddly devoid of food," she commented, staring at the
mostly empty shelves of the refrigerator.
"What's it like working and living with ancient gods and goddesses," I
asked.
She shrugged. "They are just like spoiled humans, only with a lot more
power. They have very little to do except plot and plan and think of
ways to get revenge for imagined insults. The are vain beyond belief,
and equally as stubborn."
"And how did our family get mixed up in this?" I asked.
"Ahh, that is a story for another day, my pet. Suffice to say, magic in
the mortal realm always comes at a price. If I had been allowed to
return to this world sooner, I might have - well, what is past is
past." She placed a plate in front of me with the most delicious
looking hamburger I had ever seen.
"How? Where did that -" I said surprised.
"I have my ways. Now eat while we make plans to free your mother. She
made it pretty clear in your dream where she is being kept, and that
also tells us with whom we dealing."
I looked at her in surprise. "She did? How?" My words were garbled
through the mouthful of Hamburger.
After admonishing me not to talk with my mouth full - it's un-ladylike
she said, my grandmother explained that the warrior statues in my dream
meant we were dealing with Aries, the god of war, and the shadow that
had enveloped my mother meant she had probably been taken to Hades.
"And this is all because of a prophesy that I will unleash some spell
that will begin the War of magic?" I asked, carefully swallowing my
mouthful of food before I spoke and dabbing at my lips with my napkin.
"Why didn't Aphrodite just change me back to a boy? Then I wouldn't
have my mother's magic and none of this would have happened."
"That was her intent when you met her, but she told me she saw
something in you. Something beautiful and full of promise, albeit
lacking in grace and confidence. As the Goddess of Power and Wisdom
through Beauty and Grace, she felt she couldn't deny you the
opportunity to grow into your new identity. Chloe and her friends were
supposed to guide you and keep an eye on you, although it seems they
were a little over zealous and treated you a bit like their personal
Darby doll. They will be punished for that in time. "
I laughed. "I think you mean Barbie doll. And though they did bully me
more than a little bit, I don't think they should be punished."
My grandmother nodded. Her eyes glowed with pride. "You have a
compassionate forgiving soul, my darling child. That is part of your
beauty. Now we must train and plan."
She spent the evening teaching me the fundamentals of magical
manipulation of inanimate objects. I learned how to open locks and send
objects such as knives and swords hurtling through the air. My control
was not exactly perfect, and sometimes things happened too fast for me
to control. I accidently sent a drawer full of kitchen tools through
the ceiling, and pulled a door off its hinges. I could tell Grandma was
concerned about the pace of my progress, though she continued being
positive. After eight hours of focused training, she said it was time
to stop.
"But I'm just getting started," I told her. The look on her face told
me otherwise.
"OK," she said, "we'll pick up tomorrow after school. After
cheerleadering practice."
"School?" I said incredulously. "and cheerleading? You have to be
kidding. This is way more important. Besides, I'm pretty sure I was
suspended."
She stared at me lost in thought. "Every agreement or contract a witch
makes is a binding. You must fulfill all your obligations to the best
of your ability. As for being suspended, I think you will find that
almost no one will remember what happened, except Chloe." Then she
kissed me gently on the forehead. "Tonight you must sleep, rest and
grow strong. We will rescue your mother when all the pieces are in
place."
I slept without nightmares that night, and was full of energy the next
day. One could even say I felt perky. As my grandmother had foretold,
the events of the day before were a mystery to everyone. I didn't want
to go to cheer practice, but I did. It went well although Chloe
criticized my split and my pike. "Discipline, and precision," she
scolded me. "Your team mates are counting on you."
When practice was finished I saw David waiting by the door.
"Hey, David," I called out. He came right over. "So about the dance -"
His face grew beet red. "Did Chloe tell you?"
"Tell me what?" I asked innocently.
"That I was going to ask you to go with me to the dance."
"No," I lied, "but I was really hoping you would. Or I was going to
have to ask you."
"Absolutely yes," he laughed, and bowed. God he was cute. I saw Chloe
grinning at me from across the gym.
At home Grandma was waiting with dinner on the table. It was early, but
I knew we had a lot of work to do after that.
Practice included distance viewing and identifying spell types. None of
that seemed very useful to me.
"When do we rescue my mother?" I asked. She reiterated her previous
answer "When all the pieces are in place."
When I got home, my grandmother was waiting for me. "Our time table has
been moved up. Change your clothes, and come back down. We are going in
tonight."
I ditched the cheerleader outfit and put on jeans and a blouse. I
wasn't totally sure what one wears to Hades, but it seemed like a safe
bet. When I got downstairs I saw we had been joined by Chloe and
Daphne. "Go team," I muttered.
We all joined hands as grandma mumbled some words in Latin, I think, or
Greek or maybe some ancient forgotten language, and suddenly we were
standing in a gloomy cave next to a dark river.
Grandma went to speak to a man who was standing on a raft, then she
motioned to us to get on it. When I looked into the water I saw the
faces of people, all of whom had dark holes whet their eyes should
have been.
"You must not touch the water," grandma warned us, or you will lose
your memories of who you are and who you have been."
I stayed as far from the edge as I could. After a while we arrived at
the other side where an enormous gate towered over everything.
"The entrance into Hades," Chloe said knowingly.
Daphne nodded in agreement. "Duh," I said. "Now what?"
As if in answer to my question, a monstrous dog with three angry heads
emerged from the shadows growling, roaring and snapping at us.
"That is Cerebus, Hades' guard dog" My grandmother said, "He is
chained, but stay back."
"You don't have to tell me twice," Daphne said, her eyes wide with
fright.
The enormous gate opened just enough to allow two silhouettes to walk
through.
"Hello Hades, Aries," my grandmother said, "I am here to ask for the
return of my daughter."
"Ah, but you didn't say please," the darker of the two silhouettes
said, "and you know the price of her return."
"Hades, what you ask is unwise.If my granddaughter fulfills the
prophecy, the outcome will be untold destruction and sorrow. The
release of so much magic into a world that is woefully unprepared for
it would be the end of the human race."
"Yes it would," Aries said, barely able to contain his glee at the
thought of such an outcome. "Humans are ignorant cows and their
arrogance will lead to their eventual destruction anyway."
"You have no right to hold my mother prisoner," I yelled, "I demand
that you let her go."
Aries chuckled, "Men demand, women connive. Come here and let me look
at you closer."
I looked at grandmother to see what I should do. She nodded. I moved
closer to the gods. "Let her go," I said, "and I will do what you
want."
This seemed to strike both gods as immensity humorous, Aries in
particular. Close up I could see the scars on his face that his black
beard couldn't hide. Hades' face was little more than a shadow.
"Of course you will, my pretty little thing," Aries said with a
sadistic grin. "It is what women are for after all. To please men.
Would you like to know some of the ways you will learn to please me?"
He grabbed my arm and pulled me up to him.
"How unwise of you to come here of all places, what were you thinking?"
Behind him, I saw two women move quietly out of the gates, unseen by
either god. Cerebus prepared to spring into action but was stilled when
one of the women raised her hand. In less than a second Chloe and
Daphne each produced daggers and stabbed them into what looked like
empty air. But the empty air cried out in pain as the forms of two
goddess became visible, with the daggers in their chests. One was Eos.
As she staggered in pain, I felt myself changing back to being a boy.
The connection between us had been severed. The other goddess, much
older, was not a face I had ever seen.
"Hello Khaos," my grandmother said calmly, "still sowing discord I
see." My mother ran to where my grandmother was waiting for her.
Hades' eyes glowed as red as embers in the shadows that made up his
face.
"How could you -" he roared. "No one leaves without my permission!"
"Or mine," said Persephone, "can it be possible that you forgot about
your consort again? It seems we women are good for more than just
pleasing a man."
I reached out with my mind and uttered the words my grandmother taught
me, sending a third ritual dagger speeding into Aries heart. My mother
reached to pull me away, but Aries maintained a solid grip on my arm as
he pulled the knife from his chest and tossed it to the ground. Then,
as he pulled his sword from the scabbard, I wriggled free. He swung his
sword at my mother but I leaped forward and pushed her back. As it
sliced through me, the world went black and the last things I heard
were the screams of my mother, my grandmother, Chloe and Daphne.
And then nothing.
There is no sense of time in the nothingness. Just my thoughts,
feelings and memories. I remember the people who loved me and accepted
me and guided me. I think about who I'd been and who I might have
become. I wonder what comes next. Is it a minute? An hour? A month? A
year?

I feel a warm light wrap itself around me like a mother's hug.
Is it heaven? Or another place? Am I going to be reincarnated?
The light does not have a voice, but I sense questions. I have choices
to make. I choose.
And I am home, in my bed. I feel the comfort of my familiar mattress
and when I open my eyes, I see both my mother and grandmother are with
me. I tell them about the darkness and the light. I tell them about the
choices I made. The choices I made for myself, not for anyone else.
My mother tells me it has only been a couple of hours since we were at
the gates of Hades. I leap out of my bed and run to the mirror in the
bathroom and laugh. Where the sword sliced through me, I don't even
have a scar. I text Chloe to tell her I'm alive, and I'll be at school
in the morning and at practice after school and I ask her to tell David
I can't wait to see him. My grandmother says I should take it easy, but
my mother says it's my life and I should go at my own speed. She says a
girl has to do what a girl has to do.
And after all, Mother knows best.
