When I opened the front door, Chloe, Daphne and Gabriella burst in
soaking wet from the pouring rain.
"Could you have left us out there in the rain a little longer?"
Gabriella snarked.
"I could have," I laughed. "Come in. I'll get you towels. What is so
urgent that it couldn't wait until tomorrow?"
"You don't look sick," commented Daphne. "See I told you she was faking

I had totally forgotten that I'd told Chloe I was sick. I shrugged. "I
just needed a little me time," I explained.
"Fine. Whatever," Daphne said, shaking the water out of her hair like a
dog on the beach. "Towel?"
I ran upstairs to the bathroom and pulled three large fluffy towels
from the closet and threw them to the girls . God, I wished they hadn't
shown up when they did. I had only been able to read the first page of
my mother's letter, and my curiosity was burning inside me. "Because it
was prophesied that a spell cast by my daughter would start the great
war of magic, Zeus had cast a spell that made me infertile," the letter
said, "It shattered my heart in a thousands pieces and left me unable
to carry out many of the tasks that were expected from members of our
family. It hit your grandmother especially hard, as she took great
pride in our lineage. A line of witches that dated back over a thousand
years would now come to an end."
If she was infertile, I wondered, did that mean I was adopted? I could
tell the girls the truth. They might understand and leave me alone, but
somehow I doubted it. They were as nosey as they were bossy. And I
wasn't happy at how they seemed to enjoy their power they had over me.
After everybody was dry, Chloe pulled two bottles out of her oversized
purse. "Margarita time," she sang. Gabriella was already in the kitchen
slamming cabinet doors in search of a blender. I was about to get it
for her when I heard her say, "Found it!"
"Why are you here?" I asked Chloe. "The real reason."
"We're celebrating," she said heading into the kitchen. "Aren't we,
girls?"
"What exactly are we celebrating?"
"Homecoming, of course. We are going to knock the school on it's ass."
Then she leaned in close. "And I know something that you don't!" I
could tell she'd already been drinking. The sound of the blender
crushing ice cubes into smithereens made conversation difficult for a
few minutes. But soon the beverages were mixed and poured into large
water glasses.
"Oh shit," Daphne said, "you don't think we woke your mother do you?"
I explained that my mother was gone on another business trip and
wouldn't be home til tomorrow. "So what do you know that you don't
know," I asked. She had a mouthful of frozen margarita and motioned for
me to wait.
"Ahhh," she yelled, "Brain freeze."
Georgiana laughed. "I didn't know you had a brain to freeze."
"I know who's taking you to the dance." Chloe's eyes grew wide with
excitement.
"Nobody's taking me to the dance," I answered, "I'm not going."
"Hell, yes you are and my brother David is taking you. There, now you
know. He's going to ask you after practice monday. Don't forget to act
surprised. And all four of us are going to look so hot that the rest of
the boys at school are going to drool all over their pathetically plain
dates."
"Don't I get a say in this?" I asked, already knowing the answer.
"He's got the hots for you big time," Daphne interjected. "Ever since
the two of you had that little make-out session at Chloe's. Surely
you've noticed how he comes to our practices and stares at you all
moony eyed."
"He's a senior and a real hottie," Georgiana said. "He could have any
girl in the school, and for some unknown reason he seems to like you.
No accounting for tastes, I suppose."
"So we all have some plans to make. Do you have a dress picked out
yet?" Chloe asked. "Cause I saw some online that would be perfect. Look
at these." Chloe handed me her phone. There was a gorgeous young blonde
in a silver sequined mini skirt. Chloe motioned for me to swipe left,
which I did, revealing the same model in a long red dress with a slit
down the side. All in all there were about six different dresses each
more expensive looking than the one before. "Well," she said, "which
one do you like?"
"They're all nice, but to be totally honest I don't think I could
afford any of them."
Georgiana looked up from her cell phone, "Oh come on" she said, "You're
the daughter of one of the most powerful witches around. You must know
a little magic. I think you've been holding out on us. Just do a little
hocus pocus. That's what Chloe does."
The idea of going to a dance in a gorgeous dress with a cutie like
David stirred up a plethora of contradictory feelings. But more than
anything I needed to get back and read the rest of my mother's letter.
An Idea occurred to me.
"Wait. You might be right. She gave me a magic amulet a while ago that
she said would help me in times of need. This must be a time of need,
right?"
The girls naturally agreed that it was, so I ran up to my room and got
the amulet she had given me the night of the sleepover. I hadn't used
it that night, but I remembered how to use it. When I brought it back
down Chloe eyed it with suspicion. "What does it do?" she asked.
"I'm not exactly sure, but what the hell, my mother wouldn't give me
anything dangerous, right?" I whispered the phrase as she had
instructed me to and within moments everyone was yawning and trying
hard to keep their eyes open. A few moments later they were all fast
asleep . Chloe and Daphne leaning on each other on the sofa, and
Georgiana laid out on the floor. I quietly made my way back to my
mother's study, placed my hand on the grey box and whispered,
"Daughter." I threw the lid open and pulled out the letter.
"You never met your grandmother, but she was a wonderful human being
and a powerful witch. Without my knowing what she was doing, she made a
pact with Aphrodite. She would leave the mortal world and serve as
Aphrodite's handmaiden. In exchange, Aphrodite would alter Zeus' curse
so that I could give birth to one child. If the child was a boy, he
would be allowed to live, if it was a girl, she would die. When I got
pregnant, I took powerful herbs to ensure that you would be born a
male. You see, our family's magic is passed down from generation to
generation only from mother to daughter, so there was no chance that
you would inherit my powers and fulfill the prophecy. But then this
happened. There are no coincidences or random occurrences in life. I
did not realize it at the time but there are dark forces at work. Until
I see you again, trust no one . Study the grimoires that I have
enclosed here but never practice your spells outside this house.
Continue at school like nothing has changed, but wear the enclosed

While I read these words, the ring levitated into the air and slid onto
my ring finger without any help from me at all.
"Well," came Chloe's voice from the doorway to the study, "after all
we've done for you, this is how you repay us? A sleeping spell? Just
when I was thinking we might really be friends."
I shoved the letter back in the box and closed it. "We are friends.
This was an emergency."
Chloe moved in to inspect the box. I was afraid that she would use her
power over me to force me to open it up and show her what was in it. I
needed to distract her. "This is how my mother sends me messages when
she's out of town. Are the others awake?"
"If you really thought we were friends, you would have just told me the
truth from the start." She looked angry and more than a little
dangerous. I decided I needed to take the offensive.
"Look Chloe, I'm going to level with you. I appreciate the time and
effort you have all put in to help me be more feminine, but it borders
on being abusive sometimes. I mean I feel like I'm being bullied," I
said truthfully. There was no change in her facial expression. "I know
you mean well. But put yourself in my shoes for a minute and think
about it."
I could see her collecting her thoughts. "Right now I'm much too angry
to make a rational decision. But I will tell you this. You had better
be Little Miss Perfect Cheerleader this week, with our help or not.
It's Homecoming Week, and I want it to be perfect. If you make one
little slip up - If you miss a minute of practice, you're dead. And as
far as my brother is concerned, you are going to the dance with him. In
fact, I think you better show him a little affection this week. I
don't care if you think he's the most horrible human being that ever
walked the earth - which he isn't by the way. He's a sweet and
wonderful boy who has had his heart broken one too many times. He
deserves better than you by a long shot, but he has a crush on you and
I don't want to see him unhappy. Do you understand me?"
"What should I -"
She moved right up until we were face to face. "If you don't want my
help then you had better figure it out on your own. Cute, Perky, and
mad for my brother. Watch some chick flicks if you really are clueless
on what that looks like. And by the way, cheerleading outfits are
mandatory everyday this week. And do something about your hair and
nails, they've started to look a mess. And your Homecoming dress had
better be a knockout."
"Is that all?" I said slightly sarcastically.
Chloe smiled. "I guess that is a lot, but that's what friends are for,
right?"
"I guess so. And when this week is over, I want something from you."
She glared. "Like what?"
"I can't really say yet, but I want your word that you'll be there for
me when I need a friend to rely on. After all that's what friends are
for, right."
Chloe smiled. "Fair is fair. Friends?"
"Friends," I answered and we hugged, tentatively. In my mind I pictured
both of us hiding daggers behind our backs.
