Just then Dad and Mr. Walsh walked in from outside.
"Now who's setting up who with a date for what dance?" Dad asked.
He looked at Marta's dress and I could tell he was confused. Before dad
could ask any more questions Mr. Walsh spoke up, "Hey Kate, why not
introduce your cute girlfriend to Martin. He's so shy he can't bring
himself to ask any girls out. I'm sure he'd be thrilled to take your
girlfriend to a dance!"
Marta just stood there speechless, she'd only been a girl for about an
hour and her Dad was trying to set her up for a date with her male alter
ego. I could also tell by the way she looked at her Mum that her Dad had
never seen her dressed up and that she had an embarrassing Mum and Dad.
First her Mum had exposed her penchant for dressing in women's clothes
and now her Dad had exposed her shyness, as a boy, in asking girls out.
Mum broke the tension for the moment by introducing Dad and Marta's Dad
to her as a girlfriend of mine, called Marta, who was going to help me
with a sewing project. Dad knew that Martin and his Mum had come into
the house before Mr. Walsh got there. He also seemed to recognise the
dress Marta was wearing. Putting two and two together he began to smile.
Mum shot him a warning look as if to say, "Be quiet!"...
Mr. Walsh looked at Marta and then at Mrs. Walsh. "Would you liked to
explain what's going on here?" he asked his wife. "Unless I'm mistaken
that pretty girl over there is actually our son!"
Mr. Walsh was clearly upset.
"Don't get worked up dear," said Mrs. Walsh, "we were just wondering what
Martin would have looked like if he'd been a girl!"
"Let's try to remember that we have a son, not a daughter," said Mr.
Walsh.
"Martin, why in the world did you let them dress you up as a girl?" he
asked.
"I don't mind dad," said Martin, "it was really fun! We had a little
fashion show before you came!"
"What do you mean - fun?" asked Martin's Dad. "you're all kitted out in
a dress and makeup and you think it's fun!"
Mr. Walsh seemed to be getting more agitated by the minute.
Before Marta could reply Mrs. Walsh spoke up. "Now don't get you panties
in a twist, George, I seem to recall quite a few times in college when
you thought it was fun George. Remember all of the dances that we used
to go to and the shopping trips to buy dresses and ballgowns for you to
wear?"
By now Mr. Walsh's anger had turned to embarrassment. He was clearly
blushing and it was clear Mrs Walsh was able to embarrass both the men of
her household. Mr Walsh looked like he wanted to escape immediately!
"Louisa!" Mr. Walsh cried out. "I was just a kid and that was along time
ago."
"Really George," Mrs. Walsh said smiling. "A kid? You were older than
Marta is now and what about that holiday trip we took when Martin was
only a baby. I don't remember my husband George coming on the trip with
me. From my recollection it was just me and my girlfriend Harley from
college in our miniskirts wondering round the town and wearing our
bikinis on the beach!"
"So George," laughed Dad, "you went to college dances as a girl and even
dressed as a woman on holiday! I'll bet that must have been something to
see!" Mr. Walsh was now the one who seemed like he wanted to hide!
"It was just a bit of fun," he said to my father, "believe me just a
joke!"
"Yes, I'm sure it was George," said Dad, "as a matter of fact it was just
a joke when Lorelei and my sister turned me into Edwina last summer!"
Mr. Walsh was about to speak but suddenly he stopped and stared at Dad.
Dad smiled at him and added, "And I think it also started out as a joke
when the girls dressed Kate over there in Philippa's clothes a couple of
years back."
Mrs. Walsh looked at Mum and smiled, "Lorelei, you devil! Do you mean to
tell me that you and your sister actually got Edward here into a dress!
And you didn't tell me? He seems like the last guy I'd imagine wearing a
dress!"
"Er, it was more than 'a dress,' Louisa. And Edwina wore a swimsuit too.
She doesn't really have the figure for a bikini."
Mum walked over behind Dad and put her arms around him and kissed his
right cheek. Smiling at Dad she looked at Mr. Walsh and said "Getting
him into a dress wasn't that hard, certainly not as hard as getting her
out of it!"
Mr. Walsh seemed quite puzzled. "Hold on a minute, what's all this about
you and Kate in dresses," he said to Dad.
Dad laughed and looked at Mum. "Maybe you'd better explain it Lorelei,"
he said. "After all, Edwina was your plan!"
Mum explained everything to Mr. Walsh, from my sister's first putting a
dress on me to Dad becoming Edwina! Mr. Walsh was amazed and seemed to
be filled with questions for Dad. It seemed odd to Martin and me to hear
our Dads talking about their favourite dresses and whether they preferred
tights to stockings and suspenders.
After a short time Mum spoke up. "Excuse me ladies," she said to Dad and
Mr. Martin, "I do believe we need to settle the problem of what to do
with Marta here!" Mr. Walsh walked over to Martin and put his arm around
him. "It's ok with me if you want to help Kate with her project but I
don't want you dressing up in Mum's clothes any more." He looked at
Martin and smiled. "If you wouldn't mind, your Mum's friend Harley would
like to take you shopping. A young lady can't dress like a tomboy all of
the time you know nor can she just borrow her friend's clothes. She
needs her own lingerie and outfits to make her feel like the girl she was
meant to be. But I think you had better be Martin when you're at school,
for now."
Martin was thrilled, he could be Marta whenever she wanted and her "Aunt
Harley" and her Mum were going to help her build her own wardrobe! Dad
and I also got something out of the deal; Marta would be my model for
sewing class and Dad planned on shopping as Edwina with her new friend
Harley and their families...
