"Do you believe it? No one thought to call the police when that much
blood was found on the bathroom floor!"
Kim had been to the HR meeting where she presented her story and all her
documents to get Dan and Carol fired. Instead, she had wound up quitting
in frustration. That she did not have an eyewitness was the prime reason
given. The lack of a police report, the delay in the reporting of the
incident were listed as 'supporting facts' in their decision to
reprimand, but not discipline Carol or Dan. Of course, Carol and Dan's
story was flawless - the advantage of having time to prepare while Kim
attended the weekend event. And no one could even prove the blood on the
bathroom floor was Kim's.
"This is such bullshit! The real reason they don't believe me is that Kim
showed up today instead of Ken. That totally blew their minds, tiny as
they are."
"You need to call her back and tell her you don't quit, and you will be
hiring a lawyer if they don't discipline Dan at least. Companies always
cave over those suits." Narya, Leah, and Kelly were all with her and
Narya in particular was trying to calm her down so a rational plan could
be made. Not gonna happen!
"What, and make Fred pay because his HR staff is too chicken shit to do
the right thing, or too prejudiced to believe me when my very presence
makes them uncomfortable? I like Fred. I wouldn't do that to him." Kim
stomped her foot "But what really pisses me off is that this is another
example of good people who don't help. Hell, they don't even believe me!"
"Well then call Fred!" Kelly jumped in now. Or write to him, and give him
all your documents. Tell him you have no interest in suing, but that you
are concerned that he has employees he should be dumping! If what you
tell me about him is true, he may well act. He is smart enough to know he
can't afford bad actors in his office. Give him another chance to do the
right thing!"
"But..."
A loud knock on the door interrupted Kim's rebuttal. Leah went to the
door and soon ushered Connie in to the living room where they had
gathered.
Kelly stood up and seemed to want to find somewhere else to be. She had
not seen Connie since leaving the event with Kim, and wasn't sure if
Connie would forgive her for the way she had acted towards Kim.
"Connie, I know I was not on my best behavior at times, but..." She
stopped as she realized Connie was headed straight for her.
Connie opened her arms and engulfed Kelly in a hug, backed away and said
"Kim is a big girl, and can take care of herself. And if she says she
loves you, that's good enough for me. Kim is the best friend I've ever
had, and I hope you will be my friend too."
Before Kelly can react, Connie turns to Kim and reaches out to grab her
hands. "Kim, Fred is firing both Dan and Carol when they walk through the
door tomorrow morning."
"What!" Everyone explodes with questions, and Connie raises her hands for
silence. Eventually she can continue. "I simply reminded him of a few
things. One: that you were one of his most trusted employees, two: that
we are in an employment at will state, meaning no reason has to be given
to let anyone go, and three: that he didn't want to worry about his
Thanksgiving dinner being poisoned when he came to my house to eat. He is
my uncle, after all."
Kim blurts out "I thought he was your cousin!"
"Kim, dear" Connie replies, "you need to stop blurting out the first
thing that comes into that pretty head of yours. That's why you don't
have a job right now, and actually, I have no idea what his relationship
to me is, but growing up I called him Uncle Fred, so that's what I called
him when I called him, or something like that."
"Ain't that the truth - about blurting, that is?" Narya stepped in to the
conversation "do you think Fred will give Kim her job back, if she asks?"
"I don't want that job. I keep telling you that!" Kim had recovered from
her shock of learning of the demise of her tormentors. "I assume there
will be no record of the incident when they are fired? Their next
employers will be completely unaware of what they are hiring?"
"No" Connie replied "No record of it. He refused to do that since if you
do give a reason for firing someone, they can take legal action to fight
that reason. Fred just can't afford that legal battle. Plus as part of
what he is going to call a reduction in force, he will not replace the
headcount Kim left vacant, and one open job in IT that frankly he
couldn't find anyone to fill anyway. The Interns are safe, so Leah still
has a job! But it is an 8% staff reduction. He says in six months or so
he expects he will have to see the error of his ways and hire the staff
back, and winter is a slow time anyway so the load won't overwhelm
everyone, and he may even be able to give everyone a small Christmas
bonus."
"Remind me to never cross you, Connie, well, not again anyway" Kelly was
looking at her with admiration "you know how to take someone down and
make it look like it was all part of the plan!"
"I would never do that to a friend! And as long as Kim loves you..."
"Narya steps in again "OK, OK, so what is Kim going to do now?"
"Well I would love to kiss my girlfriend, if I am allowed to blurt out
the first thing in my mind!" Kim smiles.
"Well welcome back to sanity girl!" Narya smiles "But no kissing yet.
What are you going to do for a job? And what clothes will you be wearing
at this new job, trousers and ties, or dresses and skirts?"
Everyone holds their breath as Kim looks at them and says "All of that,
and more! Here is what I am planning. You know I own about ten per cent
of the stock on Fred's company. He has always said he would buy me out
any time I wanted. It is enough for me to live on for two or three years,
and pay for a retraining course I've found. I'm going to be a Private
Investigator, and Kelly and I are going into business together!"
Fortunately Kelly is there to break the stunned silence that greets this
proclamation. "One of the top classes in the country is based in Boston,
and much of it can be taken online. Kim will work in the store with me
and Stacy, while we both take the course. We will not rent Kim's house
here in Maine unless we have to, but we will find a caretaker. Actually,
we were hoping Leah would agree to stay here rent free, as long as she
mows and shovels, and lets Kim know if any major repairs are needed."
"I would love to do that!" Leah wraps Kim and then Kelly into hugs. "Fred
has said he is going to renew my Intern job for another six months, and
if he is hiring in the spring, I will be ready!" I was a little concerned
because paying my rent and college loans would make Leah a very dull
girl. But you have to let me pay something."
Kim jumps in "How about you pay a hundred a month into an account, and we
can use that to pay any repairs and if there are none, then the property
taxes. And if you want to get a roommate, you could charge them and put
that into the account too. The place has lots of space, and I'm just glad
to have someone in it I can trust."
"Deal!" Leah dramatically shakes Kim's hand.
Kelly continues laying out the plan "Once we finish the course, there's
an Intern position and further study in Tampa Florida we hope to get
accepted into. Then the plan is to hire ourselves out to companies who
are in situations like Fred's. They have a complaint but no evidence, and
want to find out the truth. If Kim had been wearing a wire and we had
cameras secretly installed in out of the way places in the office, Dan
and Carol could be in jail right now. Between the income from my store,
which I will turn over to Stacey to run, and the little income we
generate doing this, we should be fine."
Kelly and Kim look around, and can tell Leah is the only one happy about
the plan so far.
Kim steps in "Look, this isn't really a job, it is a calling. Both Kelly
and I have experienced what can happen when bad people are not found out.
I actually got the idea because Kelly's last employer hired a PI to see
if Kelly had told the truth about a VP who was stalking the young women
in the office."
Everyone is startled by this and started asking all at once - what - how
did that work?
Kelly is reluctant at first, but is persuaded eventually to talk. "Well
you know she was hired by the VP of HR, who had suspected this other guy
for a while. I was asked to meet with this woman as part of their
'investigation' which was kind of confusing to me because my claim had
already been denied and I was slowly being forced out by the crude
treatment I got at the hands of my supposed friends and co-workers. She
started by asking me all kinds of questions, and over time, I told her
about the ways he would get me to trust him again, after he had tried to
force me into... Well, how he pretended that he was really sorry, that he
was just fooling around, but I knew he was deadly serious, and I would
either have to give in to him, quit my job, or go to HR. I guess some of
these creeps prey upon our instincts as caretakers while others use fear
and intimidation, like Dan, from what you have told me. It was painful to
go through all of that, to see where I could have made different choices
but did not. She was very kind, though. She told me I couldn't think that
way. She said that he had probably been doing this for years and I was in
no way to blame. In part it is a failure of our culture that we don't
think to prepare girls to be young women who have the skills do deal with
life's bad people. Everyone assumes all the men you meet will be Prince
Charming, so frogs should just be kissed, and these things don't happen
to women from our neighborhoods." Kelly stopped for a time, and Kim
slipped her arm around her waist gently. Kelly gripped her forearm
tightly but did not move to embrace. "Not yet" was all she said. Then she
continued. "In the end it was all worth it. To make this painfully long
story short, the prick tried to force the PI to have sex in..."
Narya interrupted "you mean he tried to rape her."
Kim continued for Kelly. "Yes. She refused and went to leave, and he then
tried to assault her, hurt her. It was quite a surprise for him to tangle
with a martial arts expert. But it was even more surprising when he
learned of the video cameras that had been installed in his office and
that the video footage had been turned over to the police and charges had
been filed."
There was another pause as everyone digested all of this. Kelly had more
to say though. "He was arrested and set free on a ridiculously tiny
amount of bail, and went straight to the home of the VP of HR. He broke
in and came at her with a knife, when her husband shot him with a shotgun
loaded with bird shot." Kelly got a wicked grin and said "I suppose it
isn't right to get satisfaction from the fact that this poor man was so
nervous that he was a horrible shot. Aimed for the chest and wound up
shooting his twig and berries clean off."
"No, taking pleasure in that would be really bad" said Narya, with an
equally wicked grin.
"That reminds me" says Kelly "Kim and I are going to need some
instruction in self-protection. Leah, can you help us hook up with
someone?"
"My pleasure! I actually have a former Sensei who moved to Manchester, so
I can make the introductions."
Three years later...
Kim is slammed onto the mat and looks up to see Kelly grinning and
holding the striking pose inches from her face.
"Ugh, remind me again why I let you do this to me?"
"Kim, you have to take this seriously! You have to get over this foolish
reluctance to engage with me. You know you won't get another sparring
partner until you do. Sensei says if you can't take on a friend, what
hope do you have against a stranger?"
"Yeah, well I still don't agree with that."
"Agree you must, or improve you will not" Kelly says in her best Yoda
impression, poking Kim in the chest for good measure.
"Ow! You know my breasts are sensitive, now that they are real!"
"I'm sorry," Kelly says, "I will kiss them all better later tonight?" and
walks away to the showers.
Kim rubbed her breasts. Not only were they real, but all the other major
plumbing was too. It turned out Ken's share of the company was worth
about five times what she had assumed, and Kim and Kelly decided to keep
a third of the cash for the future, a third for their training and living
expenses, and the last third to complete Kim's transition. Her SRS had
been completed almost nine months ago, and the results were spectacular.
Plus no more glued on appendages, just her own beautiful body. Kelly had
consulted on the size of breasts she should have, and in the end they had
to compromise between big enough to lure in their targets but not too
large to get in the way should she have to defend herself.
Rubbing her 38D assets, she watched Kelly walk to the showers and went to
find her Sensei. She knelt by the mat until he was done with his student.
She approached and launched into her case yet again on why she should get
a different partner than Kelly. "I can't bring myself to attack her.
She's never done anything to hurt me and I am afraid I could hurt her if
I am not careful."
"I've told you before you must learn not to just engage, but to do it
completely, not with anything held back." He pokes her in the chest "If I
don't see that, I can't place you with anyone else." He grabs her shirt
"What are..."
Kim knew he was just trying to make a point, but she had enough. She
whipped her left hand over his hands where they hold her shirt,
effectively trapping them. She punched to the stomach and chest with her
right hand, then reached back and slapped the side of his face. She
twisted around and swept his feet out with her right leg as she pivoted,
and let the weight of him pull her down, since she still has his hands
trapped. As she fell, she leaned into him with her fist poised for the
strike. He ends on his back with her on her left knee over him.
"You, on the other hand, have pissed me off and I'm not afraid of hurting
you."
Kim stands and offers a hand to help him up.
He shakes his head and she thinks she hears "women" under his breath.
"Next time, you will spar with me. You have to show me what you just did
again. And I have to figure out how to make you afraid of hurting me."
Later that night, Kelly talked about her current assignment. "The
position was for an IT job. I impressed everyone with my profitable
business without managing to say what it was, except "personal
consulting." Everyone sees my IT background so assumes it is IT
consulting. Oh, and Dan was one of the interviewers and could hardly
contain himself."
Kim is just picking at her food "I'm not convinced we should be doing
this. It makes me nervous. I should be there with you - that's always how
we do this."
"I've got people all around, and you know if you show yourself at all he
will bolt. We agreed that this bastard would go down. This is our best
shot."
Kelly reaches in her pocket to pull out a buzzing phone "It's Leah." And
she answers.
Kim clears her plate and lets Kelly and Leah talk. Leah was overseeing
the installation of heat pumps in the house and always had some
questions. Kelly had taken on working through those issues. Over the past
few years, Kelly had taken a lot on, and the two of them had become even
closer than she thought possible. The found they both had a love of
hiking and travelling, and the business was more profitable than they had
thought, even in their first full year in operation. Seems there's good
money in fucking over scumbags that prey on women.
Kim pulled the diamond ring out of her pocket she had retrieved from the
safety deposit box. It had been Ken's grandmother's ring and Cheree's
original engagement ring. It was 'lost' and replaced with a bigger ring,
and Kim had come across it when cleaning out the house before Leah moved
in. Cheree had left it in an envelope in her dresser with a note,
essentially telling Ken if he had found this, it was time to move on.
But making the next step scared Kim as much as attacking Kelly in the
dojo. But it was time. Maybe tomorrow, or wait and set the stage, be
romantic. Kelly really loved that. She put the ring back in her packet.
The next few days, Kim made some calls and ordered flowers to be
delivered on Friday, picked out a beautiful dress to leave at the gym so
she could change into it. A special meal was ordered (OK, Kim still
wasn't a great cook so they found a great caterer who was their first
customer) and she made her plans. Friday, she left for the gym before
Kelly came home, changed into her dress and made her way home.
As she approached the door to their apartment, Kelly opened the door and
is waiting for her in a hauntingly familiar pale green gown. She is
radiant and gorgeous.
Before Kim can speak Kelly starts "I wrapped up the Simpson case today.
I know I've only been there eight days, but it only took three for Dan
and Carol to attack you. I got a full confession from that prick! He
even implicated and agreed to testify against Carol, that he was the one
who assaulted you in the bathroom. He said he never meant to hurt you,
but then again I had just broken his left arm so he was probably willing
to tell me anything! But we can celebrate, because those two are done!"
Kelly smiled and said "The best part is the bonus the company gave us for
making it quick and painless for them - three thousand dollars, and two
weeks at the company's luxury condos in Paris and Rome."
Kim hugged Kelly, the tears streaming down her face as she feels the
weight of Dan's presence lift from her.
"I got the flowers" Kelly continues "and I see you are all dressed up,
and if I am not mistaken, our favorite caterer just pulled into the lot.
Did you know all this? I wanted it to be a surprise!"
Kim leans in and Kisses Kelly passionately, their lips pressing their
pink and purple lipstick together. After she breaks off, she whispers "I
had no idea. And I am glad you are safe, and I owe you a debt I can never
repay for what you have done. I don't think to this moment I realized how
much of a burden it was to know that asshole was out there somewhere,
free as a bird. Thi is such a relief!"
Kelly looked confused and said "So if you didn't know, what's going on?"
"What's going on is that I think if we are going to Paris and Rome for
two weeks, it should be a honeymoon!"
Kelly looks a little wide-eyed, and says "What are you saying Kim?"
"I'm not saying anything" Kim replies. "I'm asking." Kim drops to one
knee and pulls the diamond ring from her pocket.
"Kelly, will you marry me?"
