Yankee Swap, Chapter 1
"Number nineteen - who has number 19?"
Ken slowly moved across the crowded room to the Christmas tree and picked
up a flat rectangular box. He ripped open the wrapping and displayed the
stainless steel onion basket for all to see. This was his 'gift' from
the Yankee Swap. Now the choice was to keep it or swap it.
For those unfamiliar with a Yankee Swap, it is an old New England
tradition. An item that was received as a Christmas gift, that wasn't
exactly what you wanted (say a nice onion basket) was re-wrapped and
placed under the tree with one gift from all others at the party.
Everyone took a number and proceeded in order. Each person chose and
opened a present, then decided to either keep it or trade it for another
item that had already been opened. Since the person with number 1
couldn't swap, they were given a chance to swap for whatever they wanted
at the end of the night. So it is plain that #1 was the only person to
be guaranteed to go away with what they wanted. The real fun was in the
good natured ribbing that came with the unusual presents that inevitably
made there way into the pile. There was even a sort of competition of
dry humor used to denigrate the quality of all the gifts, especially
those you traded for.
So far this evening there was a bottle of Vegemite (that of Men at Work
sandwich fame) a terrarium that was actually left behind from the
previous year's party, and various other uninteresting items. Ken
focused in on the only item to catch his eye so far - a simple coffee
mug. The mug was plain brown inscribed with the words "A year from now
none of this will matter." In the last six months, this had become his
unofficial motto.
"As much as I really like the box this basket came in, I'm going to have
to swap it for this completely dull coffee mug."
With that, he swapped with Mary, and took his mug and tried to find a
seat.
Ken moved across the room until he found a small space on the floor to
sit and wait out the rest of the process. He looked at the mug and
thought back to a year before. The previous year he was sitting in
almost the same place, with his daughter Annie on his lap and his wife
Cheree sitting nearby in a rocking chair. Six months ago his wife and
daughter had been killed in an accident with a drunk driver on the way
home from Annie's soccer practice. Three in the afternoon! What idiot
gets drunk and drives at three in the afternoon? At any rate, he felt at
this point that nothing would ever matter to him a year later again, let
alone an onion basket or a coffee mug.
Breaking out of his reverie he noticed that there were only a handful of
presents under the tree. Number 20 was summoned and picked up a small
gift bag frequently used in place of wrapping paper. He was never fond
of them since he thought a well wrapped present with bows and ribbon was
as much a part of the gift as the item inside. He had, however, taken to
them this year, since Cheree had always done most of the shopping before.
His heart wasn't really in it, and he had procrastinated so long he
didn't have time to wrap.
"Hey Ken. Earth to Ken!"
Janet was holding out the gift bag to him and beckoning with her other
hand. She obviously wanted the mug, so he traded. He took the bag,
which was surprisingly heavy for its size. At the same time that he
noticed the weight of the bag, he also realized he had no idea what was
in it, and that everyone was looking at him with strange expressions of
anticipation on their faces. He opened the bag and moved aside the
tissue paper to reveal a bright neon pink bra and panties. He attempted
an embarrassed fake laugh and held them up for everyone to see. There
was some wolf whistles and applause. As he was about to replace them
into the bag, he noticed a second bra and panties in a leopard print.
Someone shouted "Bring out the rest!" and he lifted them out to be
admired as well. As he lifted them out, he discovered the reason the bag
was so heavy. Under the lingerie was a set of breast forms. Ken
estimated them to be a little larger than Cheree's breasts, which meant
they would be a C cup. He lifted one up and shouted above the hooting
and clapping, "What kind of a boob buys this for a Christmas present?"
He replaced the items into the bag as laughter replaced the hoots.
Numbers 21 and 22 went without much fanfare. A brass letter box was
swapped for a unidentifiable garden tool, and the last item, a tacky
plastic seagull wind chime, was swapped for the coffee mug Ken had
originally wanted. All that remained was for number 1 to claim their
prize and Ken could make his escape and go home. Jim picked up his 'Bush
Survival Guide' book and started looking around.
Ken piped up, "Come on, Jim - you know you want this gift more than all
the others," holding up his lingerie and fake breasts.
"Gosh, Ken, I'm just not ready to come out of the closet just yet!" Jim
said as he walked past and traded for a tissue box cover in the shape of
the statues on Easter Island. "I can just see my students pulling a
tissue through the nose of this thing!" Jim was a teacher at an
elementary school, and was popular with the kids for his offbeat humor in
the classroom.
The swap over, everyone started filing out of the room. Ken talked to a
couple people for a few minutes so he wouldn't seem to be running out,
then quietly retrieved his coat and headed for the door. Just before he
reached it Connie caught up with him and handed him a plastic grocery
bag. "I put your gifts into this for safe-keeping. Will we see you next
Friday?" Fridays at Connie's house had become a tradition of sorts since
his wife had died. She had sort of taken him under his wing to make sure
he didn't spend all his time at work. The last few months he had thrown
himself into his work, staying late and arriving early. Quite honestly,
he had done so much that there was no point in staying late anymore. In
fact, it was sometimes hard to stay busy during the day. Even though he
spent far less time at work, he still enjoyed the reliability of the
Friday evening dinners.
"Gee, I couldn't forget this special gift, now could I?" Ken responded.
"Connie, I really should take a week off and let you spend time with your
family before they have to leave."
"Nonsense! We would all be bored stiff if you didn't come. I expect you
at 5:30 sharp!"
"OK, OK. Thanks. I do appreciate all you have done for me. Goodnight."
"Goodnight, Ken."
Ken drove home and placed his plastic grocery bag on his wife's bureau,
changed into his pajamas, brushed his teeth, and went to bed.
