Yankee Swap, Chapter 9: Meanwhile Back in Maine
Ken got home in time to wash up and get ready for dinner. He texted
Connie to see if he could bring anything to the dinner. She said "Just
bring yourself. We're still in the holiday mode, so wear something, umm,
special." The way she said special made Ken wonder if Connie was the one
who slipped the note and adhesive into his gift bag. Thinking quickly he
replied "OK, I will wear something I've recently become attached to."
What was he thinking? He didn't have any new clothes. He hadn't even
bought underwear in the last 6 months. And he certainly wasn't going to
wear the panties and bra from the Yankee Swap. Well he would come up
with something. The hair remover had done such a good job he still
didn't need to shave (of course his facial hair grew so slowly it could
be weeks before a decent looking beard would cover his chin under normal
circumstances.) He found a very silky shirt that Cheree had given him
for Christmas last year and decided to go with it. "If I can wear that
gorgeous pale green gown, then this dark blue men's shirt in a soft
fabric shouldn't be a problem. He grabbed a nice Petite Syrah from his
wine stash and headed out the door.
Connie's brother was still in town, but all the other family members had
left. So it was just the four of them, Connie and Ted, Connie's brother
Bruce, and Ken. Ken had not had a chance to catch up with Bruce so they
chatted while waiting for the meal. Bruce was a charity event
coordinator from Boston who always came up with new ideas for ways to
draw a crowd (and donations) to his events.
"Tell Ken about the Bride's run event you created," said Connie as she
came out to offer some appetizers. "Nice shirt, by the way - very pretty
color on you."
"I didn't invent it - it has been going on for quite a while in different
places," Bruce said. "And it's called the Running of the Brides. Kind
of a takeoff on the running of the bulls, you know?" Bruce did love his
puns, and sometimes the conversations he and Ken got into chased Connie
from the room rolling her eyes in disbelief.
"Ken, this is right up your alley - you should enter," Connie jumped in
before the two of them could get started. "It is to support the hunger
projects and food banks in the surrounding towns, and I know that's a
cause you support. You ran our soup kitchen for several years." Connie
trailed off as she realized what she was saying. It had actually been
Cheree who had run the soup kitchen. Ken was her pack mule more than
anything else. She continued quickly, "It will give you the chance to
try out your Yankee Swap gift."
There it was. Ken wondered if she would bring up the gift. He was
actually surprised she had said it within 30 minutes of him entering the
house. He needed to get to the bottom of this. However, he was also
still raw from the emotional roller coaster of the past few days, and was
barely keeping a grip on his newly restored memories of his previous
cross dressing exploits. In fact, he had almost decided to stay home for
the night, but the thought the distraction would be good for him.
"You were the one that gave me that gift, aren't you?" He couldn't ask
if she wrote the note - that would be too revealing, especially since
Bruce had not seen the note, or at least he didn't think he had!
"How could I have done that?" she asked. "You know a Yankee Swap is
total chaos and hardly anyone ends up with things they ever expected.
And besides, I just meant you could walk the 5K. You would probably
finish ahead of some of the runners with the pace you set while walking!"
"Don't change the subject!" We are talking about bras!" Good lord, did
he just say that? Bruce and Connie both burst into laughter. Ted had
just come into the room and looked a little bewildered, but that was kind
of his normal state. "OK, I will walk in your event, but where am I
going to get a wedding dress by April?" Ted looked totally lost now.
"Actually, we've changed the event for this year" Bruce offered. "It is
a pentathlon of sorts instead of a 5K - and that is my invention - and it
is indoors. Oh, and it is prom dress instead of wedding dress."
"Well, same question. Where will I get a prom dress by April? I mean I
would love to help out, but really..." Ken felt pretty smug. That
should get him out of it. Although he knew exactly where he could get a
gorgeous pale green gown he would just adore wearing again.
"Not April, but in 8 days. It is next Saturday, January 9. And we've
partnered with a shop in Manchester, New Hampshire that sells clothes and
services to the Transgender community. Tracy's, or something like that.
They've agreed to supply some inexpensive 'gowns' for the competition
part, as well as more formal attire for the talent and beauty portions of
the pentathlon." Bruce was in full marketing mode, unaware of the effect
he was having on Ken, but Connie was eyeing him suspiciously. Ken
wondered what kind of expression he must have on his face. "I am in over
my head," he thought to himself. The opportunity to dive back into that
world he had so recently emerged from was coming, and sooner than he
would have ever expected. He knew it was something he was going to want
to return to, maybe not so soon. And Stacy's shop was involved, which
meant that Kelly...
"Ken!" Connie poked him in the arm. "Are you alright? You look like
you just saw a ghost."
"Sorry. Not a ghost," Ken mumbled. An angel, he thought.
"Good!" Connie continued. "So that's all settled. Bruce will send you
the address of the registration website."
"I just did," he interrupted. "And since I talked you in to this with
almost no time to fund raise, I will put up half the $50 minimum
contribution. This weekend we can start getting your outfits ready.
I'll expect you at 7:30 sharp tomorrow morning. Don't forget, I know
what time you wake up each day."
Ken must have been staring at Bruce with a lost puppy look on his face
because Bruce said, "Don't look at me, my flight leaves at 6:30. You are
on your own! Connie, remember now, this is a charity event."
The next morning, Ken showed up at Connie's door right at 7:30. He
brought the leopard print bra and panties, since he had worn the pink set
and had not had a chance to wash it yet. He had spent an hour or so
cleaning up the breast forms - getting the solvent residue and the
concealer off the edges. He didn't want Connie to know he had already
used them.
"Here's something for breakfast." Connie took him to the kitchen and
gave him a small bowl of plain yogurt and berries. "You need to lose a
couple pounds before the event."
"Connie, I appreciate you, um, helping me with this, but I don't think we
need to do much. It sounds like any wardrobe I need will be provided."
Ken was worrying what Connie had in mind.
"Oh, Ken, just let me do this, OK? I have a confession to make. Cheree
was my best friend, but part of the reason we were so close was because
of you. Ted is a loving father and breadwinner, but he isn't exactly
Mensa material. I don't regret marrying him, and I would never leave
him, but I crave interaction with someone who can, shall we say,
stimulate me in a different way. So I will take you on this journey, for
those reasons and more. Besides, it's not about wardrobe. Anyone can
wear a dress. Looking good in it, and making a splash in the room takes
some work. So you are mine until the event, OK?"
Ken and Cheree had guessed that Connie didn't consider Cheree to be as
bright as she was. It was a source of frustration for her when Connie
said things like 'Ken is so smart - I would love to hear what he thinks
about it.' "OK, Connie, you win. I am yours for the week. But I think
you sold Cheree short. I know you didn't say she wasn't smart, but she
knew it. You should think about what judgments you make on people.
Cheree was smart in what she cared about. She just didn't care about
much beyond her family and the causes she supported. In those, I would
have matched her up against anyone."
"Oh." Connie was at a loss for words. "Well, getting back to the
project." She stopped. "Yes, I will think about that Ken. But back to
business. I was sure you would agree, so I've called Fred at the office
and told him about the charity event and that you were going to compete
in it."
Ken's eyes were getting quite wide. "What? I don't want anyone else to
know about this! What have you done?"
"Well, it's too late for that now. Fred has agreed to fund the whole
thing. Whatever you need to have to prepare and compete. He has even
suggested that you go to work as... "We need a name for you." What
about..."
"Kim." Oh crap - had he just said that? Quickly he added, "It has to be
similar to my name or I won't know when someone is talking to me."
Connie was smiling. "OK, Kim it is! Fred has already emailed the whole
office about the contest and strongly suggested that everyone should give
you their full support."
Ken's mind was numb. "I wish you hadn't done that." This was impossible
to wrap his head around. This was a nightmare! But a small voice in the
back of his mind was saying 'Think of the fun this girl could have in
this situation.' OK, Stacy, Ken - No, Kim thought, I hear you! Turning
to Connie, she said, "I'm all in. Where do we start?
