Yankee Swap, Chapter 15: Tuesday Night Memories
"Kim that is really amazing! I expected it to be days or weeks before
you remembered anything, but to have this detailed memory come back so
soon is incredible." Kim had told Narya of her dream of becoming Kendra,
how the whole thing seemed to be a movie where she knew what everyone was
thinking. "I will say again you need to be wary of what you attribute to
other people. What you 'know' your mother was thinking may just be your
projection of what you hoped or feared she was thinking."
"But it seemed so real, so - I don't know - solid! Oh, OK, I will write
it all down and maybe over time we can see if it is consistent or not. I
suppose if it only makes sense in terms of what I think happened then it
is just me granting my own wishes."
Kim had been so keen to think her mother may have been at least
conflicted about wanting her to be happy and being concerned about the
gender identity issues. Her other memories of her mother were of someone
who loved her deeply, but was very constrained by stereotypes and social
norms of the day. It seemed unlikely that constraint squared with her
'memory' of the early events with Kendra.
Kim had spent some time writing down everything in a journal Narya had
provided. "Keep this with you! You never know when something will pop
up." She said when she handed it over. "It is important to keep this as
complete as possible if you really want to know the whole story, or at
least as much as your subconscious is willing to give up. I will say
based on how quickly this is progressing, it may be willing to cough the
whole thing up quickly. But again, that may be less like a pleasant walk
down memory lane, and more like disgorging a hairball."
"Oh that's a pleasant metaphor." Kim made a face.
Narya smiled and replied "No - it is a simile. Similes use 'like' and
metaphors don't, or something like that..."
Kim had collected some more foundation and some other colors of lipstick.
Narya was generally impressed with her efforts, but wanted to give some
tips.
"Tomorrow!" Kim said. Kim was actually glad that she had to be at
Connie's house. She did not want to go into the whole issue with Dan or
Carol, and she knew Narya would get it out of her. That woman could make
a tree talk!
"OK, OK - just check your email before bed. I want to offer another
affirmation, so remembering these events will continue to be a positive
experience. Some of the memories may be disturbing, but they should be
gently disturbing. I guess the way to think of it is they won't
immediately hit you as things that actually happened to you, but has
memories from a story or something that happened to someone else. They
will have to be dealt with, but this should keep them from overwhelming
your system right away. And call me if you just can't take it. I can
help. Day or night!"
"I will, and thank you so much. I feel like a part of me that was
missing is being regained. I really owe you a lot for this!" Kim gave
Narya a hug, took her bag of goodies and headed for Connie's house.
Kim was dreading this visit with Connie. There seemed to be something
going on under the surface and Connie was not forthcoming about what she
was trying to do. She had said she just wanted Kim to be happy, but
there was more to it, something wasn't right.
"Hi girlfriend - how are you?" Connie had a glass of wine in each hand
and passed one to Kim as she entered. "Supper is all ready. Come on in
and have a seat."
As they ate, they talked about Kim's two days at work. Kim steered the
subject towards the odd response - or rather no response she got from the
staff. "Jane is the only one who even bothered to see me, and that was
just once. Oh, and there is Leah. She is a sweetheart. Bold and
opinionated, yet very friendly - the whole office loves her!"
Kim took a turn in the topic. "But enough of work. I need to start
preparing for this event. Have you seen anything on this 'pentathlon'
they advertised?" She knew this would get Connie going as she loved
being the expert.
"There are five events, hence Pentathlon. There's a formal gown red
carpet walk and judge's interview, so smart and sexy wins the day.
There's a walking competition, though the details are a little vague.
They call it the 4X400. There's a talent competition and then an auction
of some kind. I'm giving you insider info, but it will be a 'Celebrity
Date' kind of thing, where people bid to spend the evening with one of
the contestants. Those are always a little dicey, and they can be soul
crushers for those who don't get bids, but Bruce assured me that won't
happen. He has sponsors who agreed to step in on those. Then there's a
mystery event they aren't saying a word about, except they will spring it
on us sometime on Friday night or Saturday. The larger event starts with
a formal dinner and dance on Friday night." Connie smiled and asked, "Do
I need to guess what your talent will be?"
Ken, and hopefully Kim, she thought, were masters of Karaoke. It was
surprising to many people that someone usually so shy could belt out old
tunes with such wild abandon. "Well, I've always sung deep voices, so I
don't know how Kim will do this." Truth be told she had practiced a few
standards in the shower, and she thought one or two of the neighbors
might think Kelly Clarkson or Alanis Morissette was in her house. Just
hopefully they didn't think they were being attacked in her bathroom!
She was not yet in possession of a real feminine voice, but there was
still time, wasn't there?
Of course Connie was quick to jump on that. "Are you using a female
voice at work?"
"Well, I would try if anyone would talk to me!" She tried to pitch her
voice to be more feminine. "I suppose when I am with you or Narya I
should practice."
"So how is that going, with Narya?"
Kim didn't know if Narya had told Connie about the hypnosis, but she
didn't want to bring it up, so she went to the makeup instead. "Good!
She says I don't need to practice any more - there are other looks and
accentuation to learn, but my basic look is fine, and she said she is
going to be at the event as backup for all the contestants, so she can
help me out if I need it."
Kim went to get up. "Which reminds me - I've got to get the new stash
home and get some sleep - tomorrow comes early!"
They said their goodbyes and Kim drove home. She wondered if she had
been wrong about Connie. She didn't seem to be too inquisitive or trying
to get something she wanted. Maybe all this stress at work is making me
suspicious of everyone!
At home she quickly washed up and got ready for bed. She downloaded the
new affirmations and sat in an overstuffed chair in her bedroom to
listen. Before the first one was halfway through, she fell asleep in the
chair and remembered...
Kendra woke up early and dressed in the pretty yellow dress. She knew
that if she didn't act, she would lose her chance, and she couldn't bear
the thought of giving up Kendra. She was wearing only feminine clothes,
and it was bliss. She crept downstairs, put on her sneakers, grabbed a
package of pop tarts and a water bottle, and headed out the door. Her
plan was to go to the playground or beach where she could see Ashleigh's
house, and wait for her to wake up. She could also see her mother
coming, but there was no place to hide, so her mother would also see her
as well. So she went off on a little hiking path she saw. It wasn't
very long, and it turns out it only took her to the other side of the row
of houses she wanted to watch, and there was a little bench in the shade
of a huge old Oak tree, so she sat down and enjoyed her breakfast.
"Hi."
Kendra practically jumped out of her skin. She had not heard nor seen
anyone approach, but fortunately it was Ashleigh, the person she actually
wanted to see!
"Sorry - I scared you." Ashleigh did look sorry. "My mom says I need to
be careful about that. Most people here know about me and are used to
it. But my mom says no one can walk as quietly as I do."
It's OK. I wanted to see you." Kendra gave her a little smile showing
she was over the fright. "That's why I am sitting here. But I am afraid
my mom won't let me play long if she finds me."
"Well then let's go! I have a secret fort that my friends and I use. It
has some cool stuff we've put there. This way!" and without looking
back, she starts off away from the house.
It didn't take long to get to the hideout, which turned out to be a
garden shed next to a small square. These squares were common in the
area as they housed the community pumps that were used to get water for
the cabins. It turns out the 'stuff' was actually some makeup and
brushes, files, etc. and a mirror. To Kendra, it was magical.
"Wow, this is great. Do you know how to use all this stuff?"
"Sure, don't you?"
"No. I've never used makeup," Kendra thought to herself, I've never been
a girl before!
"Well, we have got to fix that! Sit down right here. Take this"
Ashleigh handed her a nail file "and gently file your nails in a more
rounded shape. They are a mess! When you get older you can do things
like French tips where they are square-ish at the end, but that looks
silly to me. So first we use some foundation. It helps even out your
skin, though yours looks pretty good."
For the next half hour, Ashleigh and Kendra talked about makeup, boys,
moms and dads, and brothers. Well, mostly Ashleigh talked, and Kendra
listened. During this time, she had foundation, mascara, and lipstick
applied. But what transfixed her was the bright neon green nail polish
applied to her finger and toenails. Ashleigh braided Kendra's hair so
that it came down on the right side just behind her ear.
"Are you going to grow this out more? There almost wasn't enough length
to braid, but I managed it. Your hair is really pretty. Here, take a look
at yourself in the mirror."
Kendra was stunned. She didn't look like anything other than an eight
year old girl. And it looked and felt right. "Thank you. You made me
look really pretty."
"My mom says makeup can't make you pretty, it just reveals the best you.
Speaking of which, I see her coming. I would say run for it, but she has
already seen us."
"Hello Kendra, dear, how are you? Ashleigh, did you help Kendra with her
makeup?"
"Yes, mom, she was sitting under the grand Oak this morning so I brought
her to our hideout."
"Well it is time for her to go home dear. Her father is back and her
parents are concerned about her." She looked at Kendra, with a sad smile
and said "Your mother told me about yesterday, and when you were missing
this morning, she had a good idea who you were looking for. It took a
while before I realized Ash would bring you here. But it is time to go.
Will you give me your hand?"
So Sally took Kendra's hand and together the three of them walked back to
Ashleigh's house. Kendra's mother was waiting and jumped up as soon as
she saw her.
"Honey, why did you run off like that without leaving a note? I was
worried sick! Say goodbye, we need to go home right away, your father is
waiting." Anne took Kendra's hand, and then noticed the fingernails.
"Oh my, this is not going to go well."
"Bye Ashleigh, thank you again for showing me all the stuff about makeup.
I do feel very pretty. Thank you Mrs. Jones." Kendra took her mother's
hand and started to walk back.
Kendra saw her father on the porch as they approached the cabin. He took
one look at her and said "We're leaving. Go get packed."
"Don't I look pretty daddy? My name is Kendra now." Kendra gave him her
best smile. Ashleigh had said that sometimes worked with her father.
"No. Your name is Ken. Do not use any other name. Pack. Now!"
Kendra went up the stairs and put her ugly boy clothes into the dirty
clothes basket, and packed her Capri pants and top, extra panties and
nightgown in her suitcase. It only took a couple minutes to collect her
toothbrush and come back downstairs. Her parents were 'silently yelling'
at each other. She caught her mom saying, "...well if her father were
around more..."
But her father interrupted and said "Her father? This has gone too far.
It ends now." He saw Kendra come out with her suitcase still wearing the
yellow dress. "Why are you still wearing that? Go change." He started
to turn back to Anne to say something else, but Kendra spoke first.
"No. I am Kendra now. My name is..."
Before she could complete the sentence, her father reached for her. He
didn't mean to hurt her, but he was quickly losing his grip, and even he
could not have said what would have happened next. What did happen was
that Kendra jumped back, hit the railing on the porch, and toppled down
the stairs, her suitcase tumbling down on top of her. She could see her
parents coming down the steps towards her in a slow motion way. She
wondered what was taking them so long, and then she blacked out.
Kim awoke; neck stiff from sleeping in the chair. She must have put the
downloaded files on loop because they were still playing. "I guess I'm
lucky just to have a stiff neck" she said to no one in particular, and
grabbed her journal and began to write.
It was almost 1AM when she finished, brushed her teeth and fell back
asleep, in her bed this time.
No further dreams disturbed her rest.
