Yankee Swap, Chapter 11: Sunday
Connie didn't wait for Kim to show up at her house Sunday morning. She
came in at 7:05 bearing coffee. "Up!" she commanded.
"OK Connie, relax! I'm not a Quidditch broom you know!" But Kim did get
out of bed. She was wearing a very soft blue tank top dress as a
nightgown. Connie had given it to her when they got home from the salon.
"Thanks again for this - it worked perfectly as a nightgown."
"Nothing's too good for my Kim!" Put on something simple, we need to buy
a wardrobe today! And quickly!"
Kim stripped and went to the shower. The hair extensions were keratin-
bonded so she used the shampoo Narya had provided near the roots and
conditioner from the middle down. She patted her long hair dry as much
as possible and did a quick blow dry. The style looked gorgeous and was
really easy to maintain. Just perfect, she thought again. She returned
to the little desk wearing her bathrobe and proceeded to work on her
face. She was starting to gain some confidence, applying the various
products more skillfully each time.
"You are getting really good at that. It's like you've been doing it
forever." Connie was watching her closely. "I wouldn't know your first
time was yesterday."
"OK Connie." Kim turned to face her. "Spill the beans. You put the
note in my gift bag from the Yankee Swap. What are you up to?"
"I don't know what you are talking about!" Connie squeaked out, though it
was obvious she did.
Kim stared at her for an awkward moment, and then said, "Is that really
the lie you are going to stick with? If so, we can just stop right here
and..."
"No!" Connie interrupted. "No, I'm sorry. Yes it was me." She looked
like she was going to say something else and then stopped.
"I'm waiting," said Kim. "We're not going anywhere until this is
resolved. No more sneaky innuendo."
"Alright. Well Cheree swore me to silence, but I guess that vow is
broken. She told me about an incident where you put on lingerie and she
freaked out." Connie continued quickly as if she was afraid if she
stopped she would not continue. Kim let her go without interruption.
"She also told me your mother had said something about you having issues
as a child. Cheree was thinking it was the beginning of the end, that
you would leave her and Annie. That Ken would cease to exist. She
didn't go into detail about what your mother told her, but it scared her.
A lot." Connie did pause now, gauging Kim's reaction. Kim's face must
have shown her anger, but she tried not to let anything else show,
especially the disappointment of not having more info from his mother.
What could have she have told Cheree that would have scared her that
much?
"And?" Kim prompted.
"Well, we actually had quite a disagreement over it. I told her she
should embrace a man who expressed more emotion than a Neanderthal."
Connie didn't have to say who she meant; Kim knew the frustration she
sometimes felt with Ted. Connie continued, sensing Kim had guessed this.
"Ted is a wonderful man - smart, funny, a good provider. But he has the
emotional range of a can of pork and beans." She paused, and then said,
"Look, I would never leave him, but I've wanted to see you like this ever
since. I know that sounds kinky, and I admit, this does turn me on a
little, though it also makes me uncomfortable at the same time."
Kim had heard enough. "And now? Are you happy? Was it all you hoped it
would be? Has the circus finally come to town and given you what you
wanted?"
"Oh God, I am so sorry. It isn't like that though. It's just... I
wanted to know what it would be like to be with someone who was not
afraid to be sensitive, to show feelings society has reserved for women."
Connie was realizing she was digging herself into a hole, but couldn't
help digging deeper. "So this must sound all a little creepy. But it
isn't. I just want to see you happy again. Since Cheree. Well since
that day, I've just wanted to see you happy again. And when I saw you
yesterday at the salon in that wicked black gown, I have to say you
looked happy. Are you?"
"I don't know," Kim said, though she knew that wasn't entirely true.
"But thank you for telling me this. One more thing - did Cheree tell
anyone else? Did you?"
"Um, maybe? I really don't know for sure. But she does have a few
sisters, and you know how women process things by talking about them. I
haven't told a soul!"
"OK, but I may have more questions, and no funny business from you. Ted
is very dear to me, and I would never do anything to hurt him." Connie
tried to protest. "Actions speak louder, Connie. This reminds me, are
you planning on going to the event in Boston? Because we can't share a
room. No objections! Two 'girls' can get in as much trouble as a guy
and a girl, especially when one of the girls is me." Kim thought to
herself 'though I'm not even sure I could access that if I wanted to with
this padding garment.'
"Oh. All right. Bruce has offered his guest room in any case. But he
will probably put me to work at the event somehow."
"Good! Maybe you will stay out of trouble!" Kim smiled then. "Now, are
we shopping or what!?"
And shop they did. Kim returned with boxes, bags, packages, and more.
She got lingerie at JC Penney (Ambrielle bras, of course!) and also at
Victoria's Secret. Kim had gone for practical, but Connie convinced Kim
to buy clothes for all kinds of moods - practical as well as demure and
just downright sexy, so she had a few good pair of tights, since it was
winter in Maine, and some silky sheer stockings with a garter belt to
hold them up, since it was winter in Maine!
She wound up with several skirts of varying lengths, some so tight around
the legs she couldn't take full strides, and others more flowing. She
bought various matching tops, scarves, belts etc. She got a new winter
coat as well as a hat, mittens, and a scarf from a sort of hippy store
mixed in with the trendy chain boutiques. They were all hand knit by the
young woman from super soft merino wool with silk woven in.
And as with the lingerie, she bought both practical and practically
invisible nighties. She imagined wearing some of them for Kelly and
decided that was not a good idea in this padding! She realized if she
succeeded in wooing Kelly she would need to do something about this
thing!
Oh, and shoes! And boots! She bought a pair of knee high boots with a
three and a half inch heel, which she just had to put on immediately.
She never wanted to take them off they were so comfortable and looked so
good on her! Various pumps and sandals completed several outfits that
Kim and Connie started to put away in the closet. Connie had started to
open Cheree's closet to hang up the new wardrobe, but Kim had been firm.
"Not in there. These are my clothes." Besides, Kim thought, that's
where I stashed the other stuff I got from Stacy.
Connie suggested Kim come over for supper later, but Kim declined. "I
would rather not get Ted upset. I know he is a good sport and all, but I
don't want to put him out. I am a little worried about this at work as
well. It's going to be a disruption."
"You can't think that way, girl." Connie held Kim's arm as if for
emphasis "Really - you can't think that way. Just go in there and act as
if you belong, and everything is normal. And if anyone gets their
panties in a wad, just let Fred know."
Kim agreed, though inside she was really worried about upsetting people
or being a distraction. Her job site was really a well oiled machine,
and everyone there pitched in. She didn't want to derail that.
Connie said her goodbyes and made Kim promise to call after the first
day. After she was gone, Kim checked her messages. There was a message
from Narya.
"Kim, Narya. I've decided to take you on as a client for the hypnosis
counseling. I am a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, though I prefer
doing work in the salon - it is much more rewarding because it makes
people happy. I will explain more, but text me your email address
tonight and I will send you some info. And then I want to see you Monday
after work. We can talk and I can see how your makeup is going. OK bye"
Kim realized she had not created an email address for her femme self yet,
so she created profile on her PC named Kim and added a Yahoo account and
texted the address to Narya.
She went back to the kitchen and got out the salad fixings. Twice a week
she would buy bagged lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, mushrooms, red
peppers, and other items and prep them and leave them in the fridge.
Then she could make a salad in no time. Various other naughty additions
like crumbled bacon and blue cheese kept them from being austere and
boring. Toast or rice cakes completed the meal. Taking her salad, she
went back to the computer and checked her mail. In addition to the
advertisements and welcome messages, there was an email from Narya. In
it she explained she was hesitant but felt ethically compelled to help if
it were true that Kim had been hypnotized to block something out that she
would prefer not to forget. She would do no hypnosis at first, but had
links to two YouTube tracks she wanted Kim to listen to at bedtime. They
would help her relax and be open to the memories coming forward. She
would explain more when she saw her Monday.
Kim opened the two tracks, and played a shorter one. Just seemed to be
nice music, though she thought she heard voices in the background. She
retreated to the bathroom where she washed her face and got out her
makeup and applied it all again, this time paying more attention to her
eyes. She tried blending two colors together so it had a bolder look.
She wasn't sure it was working for her. She washed and moisturized her
face, got her blue pajamas and brushed her teeth. Getting into bed she
used her phone and opened the second of Narya's links on that and
listened as she was relaxing. It was too hard to go to sleep with the
ear buds in, so she listened to the track and put the phone away.
Eventually she drifted off to sleep.
Something in those tracks must have helped her relax, or maybe just
embracing her feminine side helped her be more calm and peaceful. Or
maybe it was resolving the mystery of the note, but whatever it was, Kim
fell into a deep restful sleep and awoke the next morning feeling
refreshed and ready for a new day. If she dreamt at all, she did not
remember when she awoke.
It was time to go to work.
