Kim arrived at the salon just as most of the customers were leaving,
going home to fix dinners or prepare for evening activities. It occurred
to her she would not have been stopping this time last year. She thought
of Cheree and Annie, and let the emotions flow. She actually thought of
her wife and daughter several times in any given day, but had become
adept at stuffing those feelings deep down and going on with her day.
From time to time, she would let the feelings go. The despair was always
there. She assumed it would always be there.
Inside Narya was waiting, and immediately looked concerned. "Your makeup
is a mess - are you OK? Did you remember anything that caused this? Or
did you have a bad day?"
"No, I was just thinking of my wife and daughter, and I suppose all of
this is somewhat overwhelming and it all just came out." Kim saw this
alleviated some of Narya's concerns. "Here, let me show you how good
I've become at fixing my face!"
She looked in the mirror and saw the damage was worse than she thought,
but she went to work, and after a couple tries, got things mostly back in
order. Narya was impressed, and gave her a few other tips to fix crying
streaks like using eye drops to remove the red and not applying more
mascara - it will just clump and make it look worse. Plus use a green
tinted concealer over any reddish areas on your face if the crying made
you face look flushed. So once the lesson was over, they retreated into
the cozy room they had first used to get acquainted.
Kim jumped right in. "I listened to the two tracks, but didn't have any
dreams. I did get a great night's sleep though."
"Well before we get in to that, let me explain myself. As I mentioned, I
am certified, but the work can be taxing, sometimes depressing, and I've
found working as a stylist is much more fulfilling." Narya continued
"The recordings were actually meant to give you a good night's sleep, so
they did their job. You may want to continue to listen to one or both of
them before bedtime. They can be additive to the rest of the work we
will do. As for that work, I would like to try an approach that will
resolve what I believe to be a contradiction in your hypnotic suggestion.
If you are right, and were hypnotized to forget or repress cross dressing
or Transgender impulses, then the therapist must have exploited something
equally strong to make that work. Hypnosis, as you've probably heard,
cannot make you do things against your will. So by itself, it could not
make you forget you want to wear women's clothes, or identify as a
female. But if there was an equally strong desire to say, make your
parents proud of you, then they could have used that desire to block the
impulses to dress or express your inner feminine nature. Are you with me
so far?"
Kim had sat spellbound through all of this. "Yes, that makes perfect
sense. So can it be fixed?"
"Well, if you follow my logic, it isn't broken. As a child you had a
strong desire to please your parents, to have their approval. What I
propose is we provide another suggestion that being true to yourself is
important, and with your parent's dead, it should be more important to
become who you were born to be than to try and live up to an image of who
they hoped you would be. This is actually a fairly common request of
hypnosis therapy, and works quite well, considering by the time someone
goes to a therapist, their desire to escape the confines of their
parent's dreams is very strong."
"I get it," said Kim, "the desire to be someone my parent's could be
proud of will never go away, but the priority to make sure I am also
proud of who I have become takes on more importance."
"That's right!" Narya was impressed she got this so quickly. "It really
comes down to maturity and independence. Most people do this naturally
as they age and express themselves independent of their parent's
guidance. The parent is still critical as an advisor, as someone with
life experience they can share, but the child must follow their own path
into adulthood. When that is blocked somehow by overprotective parents,
or through hypnosis, that progression is blocked. What we are going to
do is to encourage you to progress. I am hopeful this will allow you to
remember things that have been blocked until now."
"Wow! That seems so simple and straight forward." Kim was excited that
this seemed so easy. But then a thought occurred to her. "What, no -
how will this make me feel if I do remember?"
"You amaze me girl!" Narya was smiling, but it faded. "Yes, there will
be some conflict. Part of you will not want to acknowledge these new -
or old but repressed thoughts. There will be conflict. Looking at you
though, I think you should be able to handle this. Plus, it is unlikely
you will remember much until the suggestion of independence and self-
approval take hold. I am sorry to say I cannot tell you how long that
will take. It could be tonight, and it could be weeks."
They chatted a bit longer, and Narya sent a couple more links to
recordings for Kim to use that night and to keep on using them until
things started to happen. Kim went home, stopping for takeout from her
favorite Thai place. After eating, she washed off the makeup and
practiced applying it again. She was running low on a few things so she
wrote a note with the items she needed and put it in her purse. She
could get restocked from Narya tomorrow. Kim agreed to at least check in
daily around the memories and hypnosis, and to stop by if she remembered
anything. As soon as things started happening she would see Narya more
frequently.
That night, Kim listened using one of the two links from the first night,
and then listened to the two new tracks. She dozed off during the second
and awoke around 2AM, not having dreamt. She used the bathroom and went
back to bed.
As soon as she dozed off, it began.
"Just go! You never wanted to come, and now you have an excuse to get
your way. Go!" Ken's mother was angry, but he could tell she was also
sad. It was early Monday morning and Ken's father Sam answered a call
that took him away to work. His mother Anne was in no mood. This
happened a lot, and she wasn't listening to anything he wanted to say to
justify it. "You promised me that this week would be off limits to work,
and you've broken your promise less than an hour into Monday. A new
record - you should be proud of yourself!
Ken wandered off to explore the little camp. The argument was familiar to
him. His dad was always away at work, it seemed.
The camp was not insulated, so the place was only usable for a few months
in the summer. It was very old and had lots of nooks and crannies to
explore. In one cupboard off the laundry room, he hit the jackpot.
There were clothes apparently left behind by a little girl about his size
in the laundry room. There were a couple pairs of panties, some grey
Capri leggings with pink trim, a pink cap sleeve scoop neck top, a yellow
sun dress, a nightgown, and a pretty little training bra. It is only
moments before the bra, panties, Capri leggings and pink top adorn his
body.
Kim was dreaming. But this felt different to her than any other dream.
First, it was more than just memory from her childhood reference, but
almost as if she were watching a movie and the thoughts and feelings of
all the players were apparent.
"Mommy, look what I found!" Ken said as he burst into his mother's room,
excited and happy. In fact, that's exactly how he felt. Happy. Very
happy, and excited that he was happy and alive. Anne took this all in
quickly. She had started to worry that something was wrong with her
child. Truth be told, she was right, but it was not something she would
ever come to understand, and her daughter would take decades to come to
know.
"Well, that is very... pretty. You look like a little girl," she said,
not wanting to encourage it, but at the same time not wanting to chase
away this suddenly very happy child.
"Yes, it is very pretty mommy. And there's a pretty dress too. Come see
- I will put it on for you!" With that Ken runs off and Anne has little
choice but to follow. As she walks into the laundry room, the dress is
just going over his head, and he smoothes it out and straightens the
little spaghetti straps. It is a pretty yellow sundress with tiny pink
flowers and grey dragonflies.
Someone likes pink and grey, Anne thought. "But these are girl's
clothes," she said.
"And I'm a little girl. I must be, because these fit me much better than
those stupid old boy clothes." Ken points to his shorts, t-shirt, and
whitey-tighties tossed in the corner.
"But your name is Ken, dear. What will people say when they see Ken
wearing a dress?" Anne's gender training was starting to overwhelm her
desire for her son's happiness. She was about to make him change, and
maybe even suggest they go buy some clothes that he liked better than his
shorts.
Ken's smile fled from his face. The speed that his happiness vanished
startled Anne. As she watched, a little tear appeared in the corner of
Ken's eye. He looked up to his mommy and said, "Can we change my name?
I don't like it anymore." And he buried his face into her stomach,
sniffling and gripping her fiercely around the waist.
Anne didn't know why, maybe a little defiance came in from being
abandoned yet again by her husband (who had already left) or maybe she
wanted the happiness restored to her child, but she pulled her son away
from her and said "Maybe we can try something. You can have a nickname
for today, but tomorrow you have to go back to your real name."
Ken brightened back up, a big smile spreading across his face. "Oh yes
mommy, I would like that! What name should I have?"
"How about Kendra" suggested Anne? "That way you don't forget who you
are. She didn't realize that would work in reverse as well. In fact,
Ken would always consider his name incomplete, even for the years that
Kendra was locked away from his conscious mind.
"I love it mommy! I am Kendra. Can we go for a walk on the beach?" She
was absolutely, radiantly, happy. And a walk on the beach? Ken would
never have agreed to that, let alone asked to go.
Ann was being carried along by emotion now, but a small part of her
reluctance remained. "You don't want to wear a dress..." she started,
and saw the smile start to fade, so she quickly continued "to the beach.
Put on these other clothes. They are more suitable for being outside."
"OK mommy, can you make a pony tail in my hair?" Kendra's hair had grown
out. It was a point of contention with her husband, but it almost
touched her shoulders. Kendra had kept it clean and neat and it was the
style for a lot of young boys, so she was allowed to keep it.
"Sure honey, come here." Anne brushed Kendra's hair, and impulsively put
it into a high ponytail, slightly off center to the left. That is so
cute on her, she thought.
Kendra hugged his mommy, smile firmly back in place, and said, "thank you
mommy, I will change now." Within seconds, it seemed, Kendra was in the
Capri leggings and pink top.
"Go use the bathroom before we go. I will make a couple sandwiches for
our walk. And put on your sunscreen!" She yelled after Kendra as she
dashed off to the bathroom. Wow, she thought, if this is all it takes to
get her to cooperate. Wait, did she just think of her son as 'her'?
Anne shook it off. Just for the day, she thought.
"Mommy look! I found a pair of sneakers by the door. They fit
perfectly. I will wear these when we go out!" They were clearly girl's
shoes, of course they were pink and grey.
The rest of the day was one of the best the two had ever spent together.
Anne could never forget that her new daughter wasn't really her daughter,
but as they enjoyed the day, and Kendra showed an inquisitive and
outgoing side that had never come out, she embraced the change more and
more. When Anne asked Kendra to do something or stay away from
something, she got immediate cooperation. When they talked about
barnacles and how they can even grow on living things like whales, Kendra
paid close attention and showed a curiosity Ken had never displayed.
As they were walking home, they passed one of the larger cottages near
the pier. A large crowd of people was spilling out of the house onto the
lawn and adjacent waterfront park. A little girl dashed out and ran
straight up to Kendra. "Hi, I'm Ashleigh. What's your name? Want to
see my room?"
Before Anne had time to think, Kendra replied, "I'm Kendra. Hi." Then
turned and said "Mommy can I please see Ashleigh's room?"
"Honey, we need to get home in case your daddy is there. He will be
hungry." Anne was trying to think how to get out of this situation
quickly. "Let's go dear."
Kendra didn't move, and then a woman came out and said "I'm sorry -
Ashleigh can be so quick to make plans. Ashleigh honey, they can't stay
right now." She looked at Kendra and said, "I'm Mrs. Jones. What is
your name?"
"It's Kendra" she said proudly, and extended her hand for a shake as she
had been taught. "Nice to meet you Mrs. Jones."
"Well, that's very good Kendra." Turning to Anne, she said, "Sally. If
you don't have to go, we are having a little get-together. You are
welcome to stay. I must say, that is wonderful you are teaching your
daughter to have a firm handshake and look people in the eye. I'm going
to do that as well. No reason that should be only taught to boys."
Anne was in a panic. She mumbled something about her husband and grabbed
Kendra's arm and said, "Let's go Kendra, please."
"Yes mommy," she replied.
Anne was now regretting ever letting this happen. How was she going to
bring Ken back if people in this village thought she was her daughter?
What had she thought taking her son out of the house dressed as a girl
would lead to? Maybe they could say Kendra went back with her father and
Ken was the only one left. Well, worry about that tomorrow.
The two had some grilled chicken and potato salad that Anne had made at
home and brought for the trip. Anne was preoccupied the whole evening
with how to escape from this predicament. It occurred to her once that
the easiest way was for Kendra to stay. It wasn't likely they would ever
return to this little village, so Ken could return when they left.
However, that idea was discarded almost as soon as she thought of it. It
wasn't practical.
"Go on up and get into your pajamas, and brush your teeth. I will be up
I a minute." When she got upstairs, Kendra was wearing the nightgown,
which was a pale cream with small blue flowers. "I put on my nightgown,
so Kendra isn't done! Plus today isn't over." She crawled into bed, and
Anne didn't have the heart or energy to argue.
"Sweet dreams, dear," she said. She looked at the little child in the
nightgown settle right down for sleep, and she thought, you may be stuck
as Kendra longer then you think... What am I going to do?
For some reason as Kendra fell asleep, Kim awoke. The room was dark with
just the beginning of the dawn stealing in through the windows. She sat
in bed digesting what she had dreamed, committing to memory as much as
she could. She felt she had to do that or risk it being taken away again
somehow. She sat and thought for some time before her alarm finally went
off.
It was Tuesday.
Time to go to work!
