Yankee Swap, Chapter 18: Let the Competition Begin
Kim called Connie on the way home, and fortunately she did not pick up.
"Connie, I know you are excited about all this, but I need to pack and do
some other things, so please don't show up until after lunch. I've got
too many things to get done. I think we should leave for Boston around
two. I know that will get us into rush hour a little, but they will all
be going north on the Tobin bridge while we are going south, so it will
be fine. OK bye!"
The truth was she would finish the packing and be ready by the time she
woke up, but would need to get her emotions under control and make sure
her face was good to go. She realized she was still hiding something -
the truth from Connie - but she couldn't just change overnight, so she
decided baby steps were better than none at all.
At home she washed off the face Narya had given her, and stared in the
mirror at the face Carol had given her. Too bad this one wouldn't wash
off. She did not have a black eye, but there was a bruise on her right
cheek. She had somehow managed to turn her head enough so the blow was
not directly on her nose, so it wasn't broken. But she was still a mess.
She decided to do nothing to cover this up for tonight. Let me be
reminded of this so I don't lose my nerve to follow through on Monday. I
will not hide from myself!
She realized she needed to sort out all her new clothes. She wondered if
she should bring any male clothing, and realized that with all the
appliances attached to her, male clothing was not an option. She
remembered that she agreed to go to Leah's class on Tuesday so she would
be Kim at least until then. No point in undoing all of this only to do it
again a day later.
She kept busy straightening up the place and cleaning and packing her
clothes. She left herself an hour before bedtime to review her journal to
see if there were any details she needed to add, and realized she had not
told Narya about the breakthrough and the message her mother left for her
at one of the last hypnosis sessions. Well, Narya would be at the
pentathlon, so she would bring the journal and tell her then.
The next morning she examined her face, and thought 'well there's classic
good news - bad news scenario. The bruise is already starting to break
up, but now I have more colors and shades I need to cover up.' She went
to work, and surprised herself with how good she had become. 'Well, not
surprising since it is another way to hide.' As soon as she thought that,
a little voice in her head said 'makeup just reveals the best you.' Maybe
if hiding the physical trauma allowed her to be strong enough to follow
through and make sure no one else suffers at the hands of those two, I
can think it reveals the best me, instead of just hiding the truth.
Thinking about the women in the office, she realized she should at least
warn someone, but who? The answer was obviously Leah. But an email
wouldn't do, so she logged on to her webmail and looked up her phone
number.
"Hello, this is Leah, how can I help you?" She picked right up.
"Hi Leah, this is Kim. I'm sorry to bother you, but there's something
important I need to discuss with you."
"Kim! I'm glad you called. What happened here on Wednesday? The cleaning
crew came in Thursday morning and there was blood on the floor of the
women's bathroom. Carol is spreading rumors that you were probably
suicidal because you would be going back to being a man next week and
this must have been a failed attempt or something. She says she saw you
in the bathroom late on Wednesday, but you were fine when she left. I
think she is trying to discredit you for some reason. Does this make any
sense to you?"
"Oh shit, that lying bitch!" Kim tried to compose herself. "I'm sorry for
that. The truth is she attacked me in the bathroom and left me
unconscious on the floor. And that was after Dan assaulted me in an out
of the way corner of the office. I thought it was going to be hard to
tell you this, but she has made it easy. I just wanted you to be aware
that they are dangerous, and that because of me you are on their bad
side. Can you warn Jane as well? She was the only person who showed any
support at all, and Dan may go for her."
"That Dan was included makes sense. He has been saying Carol told him she
was concerned about you to lend credence to her story. As for either or
both of them, let them try something! I have a black belt in Karate. I
know it sounds corny, but I've won quite a few competitions and would
especially love an excuse to lay that bitch out cold. And I will talk to
Jane and watch her back as much as I can."
"How did I ever get so lucky to meet you?" Kim's voice was full of
emotion. "I was so worried you would not believe me, or blame it all on
me disrupting things by presenting as female."
"Girl, you have a sweet soul. You don't judge people, you are always
willing to help others, and you are good at what you do here, as far as I
can see. If anyone deserves a bit of good Karma, it is you. So are you
going to file a complaint here or press charges with the police?
"Yes, I will be in on Monday. I've left an email with my supervisor and
Cathy in HR that I want to see them next week. A friend helped me
document the whole thing and will come in with me to verify that what I
tell them is what I told her very early Thursday morning. I am also going
to still be Kim, not 'going back to being a man' since I promised you Kim
would show up at your class Tuesday, so management may ask you to verify
that. My God Leah, your generation really is the future, and I can't wait
for them to be the ones in power. You rock!"
"I wouldn't be too quick to praise some of my generation. But I hear what
you are saying. If you need me to convey the discussion we had with Carol
where she was totally against you using the women's bathroom, I will be
happy to do that. It might make a difference."
"Wow - I had forgotten about that. Can you document it from your
perspective? If it is written down it seems to have more credence. I will
do the same, and thank you for reminding me!"
"You got it, and Kim - good luck at the Pentathlon - make me proud of you
girl!"
"Thank you Leah. I will let you know how it goes. Take care, and I will
see you next week."
She was nearly ready, but her makeup was now a mess from the crying on
the phone call. Might as well take advantage of this, she thought, so she
washed her face and took a long scented bubble bath and took her time
applying her makeup. When Connie showed up at Noon she was ready.
"You look great!" Connie said as she hugged Kim. "Are you ready for
this?"
"You have no idea how ready I am to get the heck out of Dodge City!" Kim
grabbed her suitcase and wheeled it out to Connie's car. "Let's go!"
The trip was uneventful. Connie was the kind of driver who allows very
little distraction, so she didn't have a lot of questions, which Kim was
grateful for. The check in at the hotel went smoothly, though somewhat
detached from reality. The desk clerk kept going back and forth between
referring to her as Kim and Ken, and apologizing no matter what he called
her. She leaned in and said "I suggest with the other contestants you
don't use names - just stick to "Miss." With the number of contestants,
if he didn't figure something out it was clearly going to be a long day
for him.
"I'm going to try to find Narya before the dinner, so that will give you
time to take your stuff to Bruce's apartment if you want." Kim wasn't
exactly trying to get rid of her, but talking to Narya would be easier
without her around.
"He isn't there - he said I could follow him over after the dinner, so we
are stuck with each other."
The two went off in search of the space reserved for the support staff.
They were on their second set of directions when they rounded a corner
and ran into Stacy and Kelly.
"Hi!" Stacy said quickly. "Are you two working as support for the
competition?"
Connie laughed "No, my cousin Bruce runs the event, so I will probably be
pressed into service somehow, but Kim here is a contestant!"
"Kim, so nice to meet you!" Stacy turned to her sister "This is Kelly,
and we are here with gowns for the red carpet event tonight. Have you
picked one out yet?"
Kim moved towards Kelly as if to greet her, but Kelly put out her hand,
so Kim was forced to shake it. "I'm so pleased to meet you Kelly, and you
too Stacy. I'm sorry I have not had time to select a gown. Maybe
something in green, though. I spent a very enjoyable evening once wearing
green." She stared at Kelly intently hoping she got the message.
Stacy smiled and said "I think I know just the one for you. Can you stop
by after the dinner? We are in the Fenway conference room."
"I will. Now do you know Narya? She is here to help with makeup? I need
to find her before dinner."
Kelly replied - in fact it was the first time she talked. "I don't think
you need any help. You are lucky to have your friend Connie to help you
as your makeup is perfect."
Connie laughed again. "I couldn't do that! No, that is all Kim, though I
suspect she has been taking frequent lessons from Narya."
"Oh!" Kelly replied. "I'm sorry, but I don't know her. I wish I did, she
sounds very good and I would like to meet her." She genuinely looked
taken aback that her assumption on how much Connie was 'helping' Kim was
wrong.
"I will make sure that happens, Kelly. I am sure she would like you very
much as well. I'm sorry, but we need to go so I can be back in time for
dinner."
Wow, Kim thought, Kelly is really hung up on Connie. I guess I did leave
Kelly to go home that time, and I haven't been in touch. I guess some
typical male things don't change when you put a bra and panties on! It
doesn't automatically make you communicate more. I will have to find a
way to make it up to her.
Kim and Connie wandered around and finally gave up, and headed to the
dining room. They were a little early so got a drink and started to
mingle with the other guests. Kim practiced her feminine voice, and it
did sound like it was starting to click.
There were all kinds of contestants. One of the 'girls' even had a beard.
She explained her wife liked the idea of the competition, she was totally
opposed to a clean shaven husband after it was over. The others were in a
wide array of passable, with some being astonishingly beautiful. One even
admitted to having dressed for years and using this competition as an
excuse to finally transition to a real life test. She had been living as
a woman for several weeks already, and would start on hormones as soon as
the event was over. "I would have started sooner, but didn't want any
unfair advantage when I win this thing, not that it is about who wins"
she said with a sly smile.
The dinner was the standard chicken or veggie lasagna conference fare,
with both she and Connie opting to be the carnivores they had always
been. After the dinner, Bruce came on and introduced himself and some of
the people who would be helping out. Narya was there and gave Kim a
little wave.
Bruce talked about the event and how it would help local food pantries.
Even though Massachusetts was one of the top five states for food
insecurity in 2014, it still needed help reaching everyone in need. And
since adding color or LGBT only increased the likelihood of experiencing
food insecurity, the competition was hatched.
Bruce announced the average fundraising was just under $500 per
contestant, so Kim was a little below that, though thanks to Leah she was
still in respectable territory. He urged the others who had not had a
chance to donate to chip during the dance.
"And now that the danger of food spillage is past, I urge you to take
some time to dance and then prepare for the red carpet walk, which is
part of the pentathlon events, starting at eight. Please be in the room
and in your gown by then so there will be no delays when your name is
called.
Thank you, and let the competition begin!
The music started and Connie grabbed Kim's hand and dragged her onto the
dance floor. She was always ready to dance! Classical, ballet, waltz,
anything she could do - others went to the gym, she went to dance class.
So an opportunity like this was not to be passed up.
"You better let me lead," was all the warning Kim got.
