Yankee Swap, Chapter 17: Memories and Decisions
At first, some hearing returned. There were beeps and voices, and the
hum of fluorescent lights. She tried to open her eyes, but it seemed
everything was disconnected from her control. Even the voices seemed to
be too distant or muted for her to be able to understand them. She
thought about where she might be and realized it must be a hospital.
After a crack like that on her head she wasn't surprised to be here, but
why couldn't she move or open her eyes? She floated for a while, not
even able to force herself to be too concerned about her situation.
After some time, some voices seemed to be getting closer, or to make more
sense. "Honey, you are in a hospital. You've had a bad fall." Well
that was an understatement, Kim thought. Who is this woman? Why is her
voice so familiar?
"I will be here all night with you so you don't need to be scared. Your
daddy is very sorry if he made you slip and fall." Daddy? This must be
another dream. No wonder I can't move my body - it's not my body, at
least not my current body! So the voice was her mother. Never before
had she wished she could make something happen that she knew she
couldn't. With all her heart and soul all she wanted to do was to wake
up and tell her mommy that she loved her, but that she could not take
Kendra away. She must know that this is what would make her happy. She
longed to tell her that she was not a boy, and denying that fact would
only bring suffering onto the whole family. But she couldn't move or
speak. The room faded from her dream.
Now Kim saw the rest of her life now with perfect clarity. She saw the
hypnosis sessions in a dark room, like a library or den, where bit by
bit, Kendra was slowly banished, until no memory, or even a desire of a
memory, existed. In a bizarre fast forward view, she saw everything that
had been done to rescue 'Ken' from this problem.
"Honey, I hope you can hear me." The voice was the same, but the
hospital was gone. She was in the dark library, and her mother was
sitting opposite her, and had tears running down her face. "I don't know
if this is the right thing to do, dear, but what else can we do? It
would be no good to let you wear those clothes and try to hide this. No
one could ever be good enough at hiding to prevent this from eventually
coming out. I am so sorry that we are taking this away from you. The
doctor thinks it is part of you, that your body and your feelings are
different, one is a boy, the other a girl." She paused to collect
herself. "If that is true, then one day you may remember this, and I
just want you to remember that I love you completely. I would accept you
as my daughter or my son, and there is nothing in this world that I
wouldn't do for you. All I have ever wanted for you is to live a happy
and healthy life." She paused again and wiped her eyes. "But I can't give
both you and your father your desires, and what your father calls a
'normal life,' and daddy's career, and possibly our family is at stake.
I'm sorry honey, but he is right that it is best to just go with what
we've got and not rock the boat."
She looked like she was going to continue, but then turned to the doctor.
"I know you don't agree, that I am giving up, but what else could I do?
Are you sure she will remember this someday?"
The doctor smiled at her and said "I cannot tell you what to do. As a
parent, you already have the hardest job imaginable. You are doing what
you think is right. And if she follows her heart and the right
circumstances occur, then yes, she will remember this." The doctor
started to talk to Ken, and the room went dark.
Sometime later, Kim slowly woke. The bathroom was still dark, the floor
cold and hard under her body. She tried to stand but was too dizzy and
too weak. Some light was coming in under the door so she took off her
shoes and crawled towards it. Bracing herself, she rose up leaning on
the wall and turned on the light.
Her clothes were ruined. Blood from her nose had soaked into her top and
skirt. She felt her nose - it might be broken or not. It looked like
she was already starting to get a bruise or maybe a black eye, so it
might be broken. Fortunately, the padding in her hip garment and the way
the pocket took in her penis to allow for the pass-thru of the urine had
saved her any serious injury from the knee to the groin. The punch in
the gut had made her nauseous. Once she could stand on her own she
collected her shoes and opened the bathroom door. She was relieved there
was no one left. She just wanted to go home.
"Christ, and to think it was Dan I was worried about. Was Carol insane?"
She slowly made her way to her desk and collected her things.
She got home around two in the morning, so she was on the floor for quite
a while. Her whole body ached and she still felt nauseous. She stripped
and took the longest shower she had ever taken. She thought about the
brutal attack she had suffered, as well as the memories that were now
hers again. After the shower, she got her journal and wrote out the
whole of her dream, trying to remember exactly what her mother had said
in her last message, and the phrase 'go with what we've got and not rock
the boat.' How many times had she said exactly the same thing? Even this
week, when Dan started first thing Monday on his crude innuendo and then
the physical and verbal attack near the fire extinguisher, she didn't
consider reporting him. Of course there were reasons, but none of them
good. The truth was that he is a predator and he needs to be taken down.
And Carol, well either she was Dan's tool or trying hard to ingratiate
herself to him. Some of the vile phrases she used were practically
identical to his, so they must have talked. No, they had to pay, but
first things first.
Kim opened up her email and sent a message to her supervisor and HR
telling them she would be out for the rest of the week, and she needed to
meet with them early next week to discuss something that happened to her
over the past three days.
Then she got a hot cup of tea to calm her nerves, and sat and wrote some
more notes in her journal. She wanted to call Narya immediately, but
decided to wait until a more reasonable time.
Thinking about all these memories, she wondered if this was why she had
been so good at hiding unpleasant things from others who cared for her.
Either her mother's comment on not being able to 'hide this' had struck a
defiant nerve, and she decided she would be very good at hiding things,
or maybe the hypnosis to forget worked on anything she felt her parent's
would not approve of. Wouldn't that be the world's worst unintended
consequence?
Writing things out had always been a good tonic for Kim, especially using
a pen and paper. Typing something was good, but not the same. She felt
a burden fall away as she realized she now knew her story that she had
known she was a girl as early as age eight, and likely before, though
maybe it took the clothes to trigger that understanding. She wished she
could have had one more talk with her mother. She couldn't decide if she
wanted to tell her she had made a mistake, but her mother probably knew
that. She at least knew the doctor thought so. But more than anything,
she wanted to thank her mother for the one day she now remembered
completely in all its glory, the day that Kendra and her mother spent
together, walking the beach and being mother and daughter. It was a
memory she would treasure, and never forget.
At five thirty she gave up waiting and called Narya.
"Kim, are you all right?" was all she said when she picked up the phone.
The fact that she knew who was calling and was concerned for her, and
that she was the first person she talked to just overwhelmed her. "No."
was all she managed to get out.
"I'm on my way. Don't do or go anywhere." And with that she clicked
off. She must not have lived very far away. Because she was there in
less than fifteen minutes.
When she let Narya in, she just grabbed hold of her and sobbed. After a
while, she calmed down enough to talk, and Narya made her another cup of
tea.
"Now, what is this about? Did you remember or dream more?"
"Yes" Kim raised her hand to stop Narya from interrupting "But it is also
something else."
So Kim told Narya all of the incidents and the attacks she suffered at
work. Her instinct was to hide it, or to minimize by starting with the
memories, but she did not want to hide any more. She broke down a few
times, and made sure to include the kindness of Jane and Leah. For some
reason, she knew it would be Narya she told about this. Her other
friends were great, and she had only known Narya for a few days, but
there was something almost magical about her.
"Well, I like this Leah person, but Jane didn't do you any favors. It is
likely Dan has done this to other women before, and if Jane isn't part of
the solution, then she could be part of the problem, where this is
allowed to happen because of a collective silence. Are you sure you want
to wait until next week to talk about this with your company, or the
police?" Narya had made Kim write out the entire sequence of events, with
witnesses and details. She had her date and sign it, and she also dated
and signed it that the contents were written and signed on this date.
Narya took a picture of the document to verify the date on it was what it
said. She had wanted Kim to immediately file a complaint and press
charges.
"No! I don't want to deal with this, it is too painful for me, I need a
little space, and I am more determined than ever to succeed in this
pentathlon. I don't know why, but being out there and strong and capable
is what I need." Kim paused - she had exploded a few times with Narya and
was not interested in what she thought should be done. "But I also need
to know how I am going to look good after what has been done to me."
"Honey that is the easy part! It is still an hour from opening time, so
let's go to the salon and I'll give you another lesson. No one will be
there until you look better than ever - I promise!"
So off they went. Narya showed her some tips on covering up bruises
without caking on, and before they were finished, other stylists and
technicians came in. Kim wound up having her nails redone, and a check
on her hair extensions. She was happily distracted and wound up spending
most of the day there. After a while, Narya put her to work. "It will
keep you out of the way, and make you productive if I can't convince you
to go home."
In the late afternoon, Kim reluctantly went home. She had to do some
laundry and get ready to leave tomorrow for the big event. In some ways,
this was the only thing that kept her going - a commitment to a cause she
could not back out of.
Author's note.
I know there's some inconsistency here. Kim should call the police and
report the assault by Carol. However, this is also reality. Most
estimates I have seen show that only 20% of sexual assaults are reported.
While Kim's wasn't specifically sexual in nature, it was gender related,
so the likelihood of it being reported is low.
Plus, we aren't done with Dan and Carol yet!
