Yankee Swap, Chapter 14: Tuesday
Kim's second day at work started more smoothly than the first. She went
in early and got to work on some projects she had put off for a while.
They were little things that weren't on anyone's project plans, but she
knew they would be needed soon, even if the project leaders didn't know
it yet. She had resolved to find things to keep her busy and keep her
mind off of the interactions, or lack thereof, which this week had
brought.
She had also decided to be a bit less conservative in her attire. She
wore a black pencil skirt and white blouse with a dark red cashmere vest.
The vest and blouse both had a fairly deep v-neck so she was dangerously
close to showing some cleavage. And she had gone with a pair of peep toe
sling pumps with a three and a half inch heel. She felt much more
attractive than she had the day before. I dare them to ignore me in
this, she thought.
As she expected, no one found any reason to stop by before lunch. And
while she had decided to be bolder in her dress, she had not liked being
out at lunch so she had brought some leftovers from the takeout she had
bought on the way home last night. She went into the little kitchen and
retrieved her lunch from the refrigerator. Carol and the Intern who had
let Kim into the women's restroom were there. Carol was blocking the
microwave oven which didn't seem to be in use.
Kim waited for an opening in the conversation and then said, "Excuse me,
Carol, can I get to the microwave?"
"I'm not done yet," was her curt reply. She continued on with whatever
she had been saying to the Intern. It seemed like the same old power
play - always quick to talk down management and always blaming someone
else for the problems she experienced.
Kim realized Carol had no intention of either using or relinquishing the
microwave, so she decided to introduce herself to the poor soul Carol had
trapped. When Carol took a breath, Kim took the opening. "Hi, you must
be the new Intern."
The young woman looked relieved for the interruption and started to reply
"Yes, I'm..."
"I suppose you should know who this is," interrupted Carol. "This is
Ken. Yes, that's right."
Kim broke in, "Yes, Ken, though I am going by 'Kim' this week. I assume
you saw the email from our CEO on my charity event that all this is to
prepare for."
Carol rolled her eyes, but seemed to have been unwilling to directly
criticize Fred, which gave the Intern an opening. "Kim, it's a pleasure
to meet you. I'm Leah. We sort of met at the bathroom yesterday."
"Yes," Kim replied. "Thank you for helping me decide which bathroom to
use. I would have stood there for a long time if you hadn't held the
door for me."
"Well of course it should be the women's room! I can't imagine anyone
thinking anything else. But I want to thank you for the work you are
doing. I'm the first person in my family to attend college. My parents
were often helped by our local food pantry when I was growing up. I
don't think most people understand this is an issue that affects so many
in our country still. I applaud your efforts." She paused to look over
Kim's outfit "And I must say you look great. I didn't think for a minute
yesterday you were male. You do a great job pulling it off!"
"Well thank you so much for the compliment!" Kim decided she really
liked Leah. Too bad she's probably saving every penny for college or she
could ask her for a donation, but student debt is its own issue which,
hopefully someone will address!
Carol had not moved, but Kim could tell she was getting more irritated by
the moment. She probably couldn't think how to stop Kim from impressing
Leah. She would have to somehow disparage the hunger cause or the CEO,
and she was at least smart enough to know neither of those was a winning
line, so she went for the old privacy argument. "I'm not sure I like
that, him using the ladies room. I mean what about my right to privacy?"
"You can't be serious!" Leah had spoken then realized how
confrontational that was and stopped.
"It's OK, Leah, she has a point..." Kim started.
"No, she doesn't." Leah looked determined. "I'm sorry if I offend you
Carol, but Kim is not in the bathroom trying to spy on people, and
besides, you are in a stall with the door closed before any part of you
is exposed. Thinking that Transgender women just want to see female body
parts is just so tied to the hurtful stereotypes and fear mongering that
it deserves to be challenged. Maybe it's just me being a Millennial, but
I and all my friends will be glad when that bias is history." Leah took a
breath. "Now, since I've probably upset you anyway, I think Kim needs
the microwave, if you are done?"
Carol looked like she was about to explode. She grabbed her meal out of
the microwave and stormed out without a word.
Leah looked after her with a bit of regret. "That's probably going to
come back to bite me. I wonder if I will ever learn to keep my mouth
shut."
Kim reached out to touch her arm in support. "I'm sorry I caused this.
I really just wanted this week to go by without incident. Fred is a dear
man, but I'm not sure he thought this through."
"No - really," Leah replied. "I'm glad of what I said and I wouldn't
take back a word. And who knows? Maybe she won't want to drone on to me
about how everyone is to blame but her - yes, I know the type. They
always try to sway the new people to their side and pit the workers and
management in an us-versus-them frame. Anyway, I should go. I'm so glad
we met, Kim. Take care."
Kim put her leftovers in the microwave and smiled as Leah left. You take
care too, Leah, she thought. You've made an enemy today, and it is my
fault.
When her meal was ready, she headed back to her desk, but Dan was
suddenly at the entrance to the kitchen, and effectively blocking her
exit.
"Um, excuse me please?" said Kim.
"Excuse? You don't need an excuse."
Kim couldn't tell if he was trying to be funny or kind, but it didn't
feel like either.
Dan suggestively looked Kim up and down. "That's quite the tight skirt.
I don't think it would be so tight on a real man. You have to trim
anything to get into that? Cut anything off?"
Kim was stunned. She couldn't think or move. She inhaled sharply and
then just stood there with her mouth slightly open.
The moment seemed to last for an hour, and then a voice behind Dan said
"Excuse me!" It was one of the vendors coming in to refill the soda
machine or restock the K cups for the coffee machines. Dan moved and the
older man said, "After you, miss," which allowed Kim to escape, which she
did quickly.
Kim made it back to her desk, but she was shaken by what had happened.
Her appetite had vanished and her gut was a cold hard knot. Her first
thought was 'am I safe here?' She looked around and could see several of
her coworkers whose desks were close by. She had resented being so close
to areas where people would stop and talk, making it hard to concentrate.
She was glad for it now.
Should she tell someone? Fred was out for the week. There was Cathy in
HR, but should she say something? She started to doubt herself. Was it
really as bad as I remembered it, or was my interaction with Carol so
upsetting that I am overreacting?
All this swirled around Kim's brain all afternoon. She kept coming back
to not wanting to upset the whole workplace this week. She was still
deep in thought when the phone rang. "Hello?" Kim spoke meekly into the
receiver.
"Hi Kim, it's Connie. How are things going? I haven't seen you since
Sunday. I want you to come over tonight - I made dinner, but Ted had to
go out for work, so he won't be here. What time can you be here?"
Connie was always using pushy tactics like that - not 'can you make it'
but 'what time will you be here?'"
"I don't know Connie, I have to stop by and see Narya to pick up some
makeup." Kim was going to politely refuse, but maybe Connie sensed this.
"OK, see you at 6:15. Don't be late - it's your favorite: Mac and
Cheese! OK, gotta run - see you then."
"Umm, OK?" Kim managed to get out before Connie hung up.
Kim realized it was close to time she left, and didn't want to take the
chance she would be alone here, so she decided to leave a few minutes
early. Even with that, she found herself looking over her shoulder to be
sure no one followed. A group was heading to the parking lot and she
rushed to catch up with them.
She had to get a grip she thought to herself as she drove to see Narya.
