not all women's truths. Kim is afraid to rock the boat and thinks she
can handle things and so her tormentors are not challenged or reported
until it is too late. While this does happen there are many other ways

workplace you can make life better for one of your fellow human beings.
Listen. Remind them it is not their fault and they did nothing to
deserve this. Tell them you believe them. Above all else, Believe.

Kim hugged her new coat a little closer around herself and shivered
slightly. It was a relatively warm morning for January in Maine, but she
had been standing on this corner now for almost twenty minutes and was,
as the natives said, taking a chill. She was finding it difficult to
actually enter the building where her workplace was. In truth, she was
scared silly.
She checked her phone, and it showed 7:58. Well it's either go in and
disrupt them or be late and disrupt them, she thought.
Once in the building she tried to get to her desk as quietly as possible
but that was not to be.
"OK, let's have a look. Off with the coat." Jane had apparently been
waiting by her desk. Kim's stomach sank. She pulled off her coat
revealing the grey asymmetrical hem skirt and grey and pink cardigan over
a pink tank top. She had decided on the black tights and a pair of grey
pumps with a two and a half inch heel. The effect was definitely
feminine, yet also fairly conservative. It was intended to blend in. So
far it was not working out. "Very classy. You look good. In fact, you
look great. I would never have guessed you could pull this off as well
as you do."
"Well, wearing the clothes is one thing. I have to get more used to
living in them if I am going to compete in this event. By the way, I do
need sponsors, so how good do I look?" Kim gave an exaggerated wink and
both she and Jane burst into laughter.
"What's so funny here?" Dan strolled up. "Oh, right, it's you Ken. I
suppose you're going to have to expect a lot of that this week. Nice
legs by the way. What else did you have to shave?" Dan had always been
a blowhard, saying things that had made Ken uneasy at times, but never
seeming to be exactly crude or cross any lines. This comment took Kim
completely off guard, especially as she was sharing such a nice moment
with Jane, and it was now ruined. She felt her gut constrict and a chill
went down her back. But before she could regain her composure or reply,
he was gone.
"I'm sorry you had to endure that. Dan is so disgusting. There isn't a
girl in the office that will talk to him, well, except Carol. I think
Carol sees him as a meal ticket or something. She thinks he can do no
wrong. If I were you I would stay away from her. I only wish there was
a way to stay away from him." While Jane said this, Kim noticed she had
shrunk, not into a crouch, but like a wrestler assuming a defensive
stance against a much stronger opponent. She was scared.
"I have to go now. Have a good day." And with that she was gone.
No one else stopped by to see her that morning which, she thought, was a
bit odd. She read Fred's email again announcing what Kim was doing and
asking for everyone's support and understanding as she prepared for this
important charity event. Nothing about ignoring her! Well maybe this is
for the best. She did say she didn't want to upset the office or make
things more difficult. At lunch, she realized she had not brought
anything from home. She went out to the corner deli, nervous about being
found out and embarrassed, but she did not see anyone she knew and lunch
passed without incident. She grabbed a pre-made sandwich and a soda, and
paid without having to talk. This was good as she had not yet found her
female voice.
She decided to make an excuse to get out and see a couple people about
upcoming projects. She was getting concerned about this isolation. She
grabbed some paperwork she had promised to Terri and stopped by her
office.
"Hi Terri, here's the markup for the Carter risk assessment. I wanted to
stop by because there's a real issue on page two if some of the
prerequisites aren't met on time. It could start quite a domino effect
problem."
"Oh!" Terri said, looking at Kim. "Oh, yes. Umm, thank you. I, uh, I
will be sure that is in the final document." She was looking at Kim as
if she wanted to be somewhere else. Anywhere else. "Oh, good luck in
your, umm, event." She smiled, but there was only fear in the smile.
Kim decided this had been a bad idea. She decided not to seek out anyone
else and headed back to her desk. She passed Carol on the way, and saw a
look of either disgust or contempt on her face. She tried to decide
which it was. A little thing she had always done - try and name the
emotions. Maybe it was both, she thought. I know, disgust and contempt
makes dis-tempt. Carol has distemper! Kim stifled a laugh and gave out
another one of her choked snorts. Carol sensed this was somehow directed
at her and now there was clearly anger on her face as well. Great, Kim
thought. Well that went well. She hurried past and made it back to her
desk without further incident.
The only other even remotely interesting part of her day was when she had
to empty her bladder. She was used to sitting down and peeing through
the padded garment, but had not thought about what bathroom to use. She
was standing outside the entrance to both restrooms when one of the new
Interns came out of the women's bathroom. She saw Kim and held the door,
smiling. Rather than try to explain why she hesitated, she just went
through the door into new territory.
Wow, she thought, this is much nicer than the men's room. There were
flowers on the sink counter and a nice chair in an empty corner with a
blanket over it. Oh, that must be for expressing milk. Vicky had an
infant but had to return to work. She must be storing the milk. That's
a real problem. It seems so unfair to separate a mother and child so
quickly, all for the all mighty buck. I guess Fred is being pretty
progressive by at least having this nice area. She realized there was a
curtain that could be pulled, and a cabinet and small refrigerator as
well, so she didn't have to put the milk in with people's tuna sandwiches
and week old lasagna. She finished her business, checked her makeup, and
got back to work. From that point on she just used the women's bathroom.
It seemed right. At least it felt more right than checking her makeup
would feel in the men's room!
As Kim was preparing to leave for the day, she thought back on the
response she got. Except for Jane, no one had sought her out. She would
have assumed the whole thing would at least make people curious about
what she looked like. And then to see some of the staff expressing fear
over, well what she didn't know. Was it really that strange what she was
doing? It wasn't contagious, though that certainly would be funny. A
virus that if you caught it would change your gender - you sneeze and
your breasts pop out like popcorn kernels, you cough and your voice
raises an octave, a fever melts inches off your waist and deposits on
your butt, and chills make your hair grow out. Would anyone want a cure?
Maybe she would want to get immunized against the virus once she was the
shape she wanted to be! She laughed again, and was reminded of the
distemper of Carol. Well, if only one person was bent out of shape by
this then she was doing pretty well. She decided not to let Carol get
her down. She got her keys, coat, and purse, and headed for her car.
Unfortunately, in the musing of her fantasy virus, and worry over the
overtly hostile reaction from Carol, she had completely forgotten the
comments made by Dan at the beginning of the day.
