CHAPTER THREE
Jacob's dad wants to know why the grass is not cut. It is Sunday, and
Fred Whitaker is home for a spell. Jacob's mother was a fine woman, but
she went by way of lung cancer three years gone past.
"Gone the past two days exploring is all," Jacob informed his father.
"Anything interesting?" He asked.
Jacob informed him that the waters brought him North. Places he had not
been to before, but nothing extraordinary, but that was still a

The two caught up as fast friends might, not father-son perhaps as it
should be, but the relationship was on solid ground. These two live very

His father sensed that Jacob was on to something, but he would let him
have his secret. The boyhood exuberance for life needed its small
secrets. Life was not much more than simple discoveries along the way.
It did not matter if it was an exceptional place to fish or an excellent
pick-up line that netted an individual's percentages better than others.
Life gets more complicated down the line, and the happiness of youth is
a precious thing.
A good meal in the evening together and all is right in this family's
existence. The general needs and tasks that need looking at were the
topic of the remainder of this evening. Everything decided upon, Jacob's
father let him know that he would fetch the necessary provisions the
following day and would tend to the stump removal when he returned.
"Luke stopped by looking for ya, had a guilty look about him. Did you
two get into some mischief?" Fred asks as he looks upon his son,
standing next to the table holding the remnants of dinner.
Jacob shrugged one shoulder and admitted that they had a little row.
"Don't be messing with the TNT. I'll take those stumps out tomorrow.
I'll even wait for you to get home."
In the morning, it was back to the grind. School for Jacob was an easy
undertaking. Science, math, history even art came easy for a natural
student. Luke had it a little more challenging but put in the extra work
to keep pace with his cousin.
Susy seemed to be mad at both of them. Neither understood why or cared
all that much. Jacob, though approached it as a puzzle. One that is
beyond his reach, so he stopped pondering about unfathomable subjects.
Instead, he wondered about the parlor trick played on that pore sap. He
must have ended up on the wrong side of bedding a crazy woman--a very
vindictive woman.
There was the "spider web" and the special effects of making him see
transfiguration. He has some ideas on the spider web, but he has never
seen a book on the playing of light and images. Trying to look it up on
the school computers brought him to many sites, but no helpful
information. Everything was a hook. When Denny leaned in to see what
Jacob was entertaining, Jacob almost lost it.
"Mind your own business, Denny!"
Shutting down his screen, he leaned back in his chair and placed his cap
lower on his face. Crossing his arms, he shut the world out and marveled
at what he saw. I should have taken some scrappings of that tree's bark,

Back home, it was a sight to behold. Jacob's father had prepped the
stumps. His word is his bond. A smiling Fred handed his son the wood

"Should have used more on that one," admitted Fred.
This activity had the effect of making Jacob forget about his discovery
for some time. He wondered how much old man Johnson would get off his
father for removing the remainder of old Betsy. Johnson was an ok guy,
but no one seems to come out ahead of that old coot in the world of
barter. It wasn't until he was back at school the following day that
Luke brought it back.
"Did you find anything good, North?" Luke inquired.
Jacob was about to spill the goods but then remembered he is mad at his

Standing for a short time in silence, Luke departed from the standoff
deciding to wait for a more suitable time. Jacob knew that you don't
catch fish by asking them to eat a sharp hook. Luke wasn't the brightest
nemesis, but this feud has been long-running, and both participants are
always a little apprehensive when they know payback is purchased and

"Look, my dad leaves in a couple of days. We can try the waters then,"
Jacob told Luke.
Susy's anger had a healing effect on the cousins. More to the point,
without each other, life was a whole new level of sustained boredom.
Luke smiled; there is comfort in the familiar devil. Never really
understanding his unprovoked attacks against his cousin, Luke was glad
to have someone worth hanging out with. And the many times he pulled a
good one on his cousin added bounty to his soul. It is the nature of
their relationship.
Hopping on the skiff, Luke asks Jacob what happened to his seat. Jacob
lets him know that if they are lucky, it will happen again. The secret
in the air excites Luke and adds to the anticipation of what his cousin
must have found.
Floating out to a visible eddy, both youths were disappointed to be
pushed downstream. Luke inquired if they could paddle, but a shake of
his head let Luke know today was hopeless. Settling to fish one of their
favorite holes, the bounty they caught almost demanded a fish fry.
Planning started immediately to get some girls over and make a night out
of it.
That was a nice reunion. The disappointment earlier in the day gave way
to things falling into place and good times had by everyone that came
this night. Everyone departing and Luke and Jacob knew that they would
meet early and try again.
CHAPTER FOUR
The waters were favorable. This time the provisions were grander. The
sharing of something special is exciting, even if your motives were to
create a setup. If the eddies joined, then Luke would freak when they
bizarrely enter the tributary as last time.
The feeling of being pushed under in alligator-occupied water and then
to be shot up and propelled forward in the sunlight-deprived tributary
was something right out of a scary dimestore novel. Add the splashing of
alligators intending to feed and knowing that you can't go back, well
Jacob could not wait to see Luke's reaction.
As intended, the skiff inexplicably started swiftly towards the bald
cypress trees and what would seem shoreline. While Luke circled the
skiff, eyeing for a place to jump to safety, Jacob calmly laid on the
floor of the skiff. Shortly Luke jumped down by his side, scared
witless.
Luke knew they were about to be alligator fodder. He screamed like a
little girl as he felt the raft push down in the water. Wood scraping on
the braches rang the dinner bell for the occupants of the shoreline.
Suddenly the skiff accelerated, coming out the other side free of the
branches that held it slightly underwater.
Jacob gathered himself up, looking down at his petrified cousin. The
smile on his face let Luke know he just got him. Still in awe of what
just happened, Luke slid up to one of the chairs and took in the creepy
surroundings. Where Jacob found all of this intriguing, Luke was creeped
out. Reaching into the cooler, Luke pulled out a pimento cheese and
summer sausage sandwich. Jacob craked an old style.
The chill in the air caused some goosebumps to form on Jacob, the ones
on Luke may have been from a different cause.
"Where are we headed, Jacob? And you could have warned me. What if I had
jumped in the drink? You fucking bastard."
Indeed, swimming with alligators is one thing, but entering water that
they were just enticed to join is very different.
"You'll see soon enough. This place is fantastic," Jacob informed his
cousin.
"We could have used some gherkins for these sandwiches or at least some
tomatoes. For fuck's sake, your dad has a garden full."
That was Luke in a nutshell. Scared shitless one second and then
bitching about what is entering his stomach the next. He wasn't dumb,
but he has the attention span of a cricket. Actually, Jacob mused, if he
applied himself, he could probably win most of our "arguments."
"What the Fu**?"
"How are there so many people here?"
Seeing the campsites set up, Luke gathered that this was a popular spot,
but obviously, normal people come from the other direction. Then it
dawned on him...Alligators.

"Come on, let's pull the skiff up," Jacob instructed.
"This place is creeping me out. Let's get out of here."
"No, you haven't seen anything yet," Jacob responded.
Abandoned campsites that look as if people were just here. Tents pitched
where alligators belong. No boats on site. Luke didn't like what he was
witnessing but would not concede to his cousin's bravado. If Jacob isn't
afraid, Luke damn sure wasn't going to be.
Jacob was bothered that all of the tents were still there. He expected
Nicolas Kinkade's site to be cleared away. Going into his tent, he found
the radio and switched it on. The radio was still working; he started to
dwell on what this might mean. Maybe Nicholas got lucky again.
"Let's stash the food on the trail."
"What trail?"
"This is what you just got to see," Jacob informed. Moving his head in
the direction of weathered footprints that still barely bore witness to
something beyond. The two entered the trailhead. Luke seemed mesmerized.
Only fifty feet in, Jacob ascended to the top of the cliff. He beckoned
Luke to follow. Luke shimmied up but could not make the switchover to
gain access to the top.
"That's ok; the trail leads to the same place," Jacob informed his
cousin.
Luke had fallen for it. Jacob could not wait to see him suspended in

Luke had not waited for his cousin. Something had beckoned him forth. As
Jacob came into view, he watched as Luke aimed and let fly a ball

The racket that ensued brought out the occupant of this homestead.
She was livid. Even at the great distance between his cousin and

"What kind of man trespasses on someone else's property and tries to

"In your stupid actions, you have broken the bond between my companion
and myself. For this, you will pay dearly."

he saw that first night with Nicholas. This time was Luke on the
