Before Megan could grumble, Elvin lunged at her again, and this time he used his bulk to try and overpower her. Or, at least, he tried. Megan’s wolf wasn’t the biggest so she had a disadvantage on strength and reach. But she was quick, wily, and aggressive. She knew exactly where to dodge around opponents. Her wolf took over, darted them to the side and under Elvin’s snapping teeth. She used her front paws to lurch herself over him, knowing that Elvin would turn to lunge for where she had just been. She darted over him then turned and snapped at his vulnerable belly. He stopped after her teeth grazed him.
“Can we finish with that, now? I’ve been beating you for most of this week,” she said as she panted.
“Fine,” Elvin grumbled. He shifted to human and Megan averted her eyes. Since the week before, they hadn’t touched each other like that again. Elvin hadn’t even talked about it. Neither had Orion, who would speak to her neutrally, as if she was a stranger who just happened to be living in the pack. But that was fine, she told herself. She missed the mentorship and deep friendship she shared with Orion, but she would regret not being Alpha more.
As Elvin was donning his jeans, Megan changed too, putting on a long dress she’d brought. Dresses were simple, and she liked them. To distract herself from thinking about Orion and Elvin naked, she said, “Charmaine announced how the hunt will go. It’s going to be the day after tomorrow.”
“I heard. She’ll release marked prey, we’ll all go after it and you have to be the one to catch it. Fairly standard. You’ll breeze past that no problem,” he said.
Chuffed with his confidence, Megan said, “she hasn’t said what the other challenges will be, though.” There were five stages to an alpha challenge; provide for the pack, be able to live alone from the pack, protecting the pack, supporting the pack and, at last, fighting the pack. The head omega would decide exactly what form these challenges took but some of them were more rigid than the others. Providing usually took form of a hunting exercise, and the last stage was always fighting the existing Alpha to submission.
“Being independent of the pack will just be you living outside of our territory, I can’t imagine it’ll be more than two weeks,” Elvin said. Megan nodded. “I can’t see Charmaine sending you out to hunt down a wild wolf so protecting the pack is going to take time. She’ll probably wait until there’s an unavoidable threat we’d have to deal with anyway and get you to handle it.”
“You see, that’s what I’m worried about,” Megan said as she went over to the small bag she’d brought. She drew out a water bottle. They lived fairly close to the human’s territory, which meant they could trade for their more useful inventions. A water bottle that could filter stream water? Genius. She took a long drink. “I don’t want this to take all year as we wait for someone to threaten our borders or for a team of humans to come hunting.” Especially with Orion’s cool attitude towards her.
“There’s been a good amount of trouble lately, I’m sure you’ll come across something,” Elvin said with a rare smile. Megan grinned back. While things were understandably fraught with Orion, at least her easy friendship with Elvin hadn’t changed. He didn’t speak much with most people, but when it was just the two of them, he was chatty as anyone.
“Also, supporting the pack is going to be something lame and I know it,” Megan said, sighing a little. She held out the water bottle to Elvin and he took it, drank. A drop trickled down his chest, over his pec and into the trail of curls that followed all the way down to the waistband of his pants.
Elvin finished drinking and shot her an amused look, like he knew what she was thinking. Warmth coiled in her belly but she ignored it. Both of them knew she had to focus. “Charmaine is a good omega. She knows this is the chance to make sure you know about running the pack, and to learn who to talk to about what.”
“I know all that, I haven’t been just ignoring how the pack works in the lead up to this.”
“It’s different when you’re in charge,” he said. “Now, for the hunt. I’m going to go capture something, then release it, and if I get it before you do, you have to fight me again.”
Megan rolled her eyes. “Fine. But get ready to get your ass beat, either way.”

The alphas of the pack, about thirty in total, gathered together, all in their wolf forms. Some of the betas had grouped up to watch from the side lines, especially the older and youngest members, but Megan knew a lot of them would deem it an alpha thing and decide they had better things to do. Omegas tended to get stressed out about alpha fights so they usually went about their business as well.
Charmaine stood with them, the only omega in attendance, standing out as the only one, apart from the group of onlookers, who was in human form. She held a basket that was squeaking. Some of the other alphas had already expressed their frustration that they’d be chasing a rat or mouse. It was easy to lose one. But Megan knew why the head omega had chosen a small rodent. Megan would have no trouble catching a rabbit and a deer wouldn’t stand a chance either. But a rodent, she could lose.
Megan grinned. The omega wasn’t going to make this easy.
The last alpha in the pack joined them. Charmaine glanced at the nearby sun dial. She glanced at Megan and raised her eyebrows, as if to ask her if she was ready. Megan nodded. She had been ready for months.
Charmaine raised the basket and all alphas fell silent. She opened it and took out a small creature who had been dyed bright green. Purple or red would have shown easier, so she’d chosen a color that would add to the difficulty while still being unnatural enough to mark it. It was a rat but a small one, a creature that was ready to run. Megan knew this kind of rodent, they were rarely eaten because they were quick, and didn’t give much meat for all the hassle they were to catch. She tensed.
“Go when I say and not before,” Charmaine said loudly, not meeting anyone’s eyes. Giving a command to this many alphas had probably been difficult for the older omega. Slowly, she let the rodent go. It darted into the underbrush. Charmaine stayed silent for the space of three seconds, then said, “Go!”
Megan shot off like a rocket. She could see Orion out of the corner of her eyes, going around. Elvin was here somewhere as well.
Twenty minutes later, Megan returned to the spot they’d started, the rodent dead between her teeth. Charmaine, still in human form, took it from her, checked the green dye to make sure it was the same one. The omega grinned at her. “Megan. You pass the first challenge.”
The betas still watching cheered for her. Out of the corner of her eye she could see Orion watching her from the shadows, having followed her back. Alphas began changing back, clapping her on the back as she changed as well. Charmaine beckoned her over, Megan knew it was to go through what the next challenge would be. When she was finished talking with the omega, she glanced back around. Orion had gone.
Megan threw on a dress she’d left at the starting spot and went back to her own hut, still buzzing with adrenaline. “One down, four to go,” she said to herself as she walked in. She didn’t jump when she saw Elvin waiting for her inside, leaning against the side of the wall. She knew he’d be there. She’d have some time before the next challenge, now was the time to celebrate. She knew he’d been waiting for the right time.
“Is Charmaine sending you out straight away?” he asked as he watched her close the door.
Megan nodded. “Tomorrow. I’m going East for a week. She sought permission from the pack there already. They’ll know that I’m doing a challenge and to leave me alone.” She unzipped the dress she’d thrown on, slowly began drawing it up. Elvin’s eyes warmed.
“I wasn’t sure if you’d want to do this just before you leave,” he murmured as his eyes locked onto her chest. He brushed a hand over his mouth.
“Why?” Megan snorted. “Are you afraid you’re that good that I won’t be able to leave?”
“You can tell me after,” Elvin said as he stalked over. He put his hands on her waist first, touching her roughly. He moved his hands over her hips, feeling her supple flesh. He moved her back against the wall and once her back hit wood, he ducked his head to take a nipple into his mouth.
