As you know I've been calling her once or twice a month but lately she really seemed depressed and out of sorts to me, so last week I flew down and went to see her in person. I didn't say anything to you guys about it because I didn't want to trouble you if it turned out to be nothing, but after seeing her I realized I was right and she's in real trouble."

"What kind of trouble?" I asked.

"Well, I think she may have taken my leaving her and coming to live with you guys much harder than any of us realized." Clarity explained. "Oh she's thrilled now that I'm going to such a prestigious college and all, but remember she doesn't know anything about what my life or her life would have been like if you guys hadn't stopped me from being raped, so to her it just felt like her sixteen year old daughter had walked out on her, and with that happening less than a year after her divorce I'm guessing she must have felt a bit like everyone had abandoned her."

That reminded me of just how tricky it had been for Clarity to get her mother to agree to let her move in with us when she was only sixteen and still in high school. The one thing in Clarity's favor at the time was that Mary realized her daughter had started running around with a rough crowd at school and after getting to know Heather and Vicky she recognized that these two girl's would be a much better influence on her daughter than her current set of friends. Then after learning, and meeting the adult women also sharing the same house she had reluctantly agreed to let Clarity move in with them providing Clarity came to visit her now and again. "Anyway," Clarity continued, "none of us even recognized what was going on, and I know I certainly didn't, but I guess after I moved out mom developed a serious gambling problem. The gambling didn't really start affecting her life that negatively until after I turned eighteen and the child support payments stopped coming in."

"How so?" Vicky asked.

"Well, it seems that after I came to live with you guys mom started using the child support money to gamble with. Remember my dad was pretty generous with those payments so mom had a lot of extra money each month and no daughter to spend it on. But when I turned eighteen and dad's payments stopped coming in each month she started gambling with money she didn't really have. She begged, borrowed and stole the cash to feed her habit. It turns out that over the last year not only has she mortgaged her house twice over in order to feed her gambling habit but she's also in debt to some bookie to the tune of over twenty thousand dollars."
