Practice was pretty strange. We worked on two separate offenses. Coach explained that the pro set should work pretty well against Trail City, but Whitehorse would be prepared for it. Since they were so much bigger than us, he wanted to try something else. The Wishbone was his choice. It was a different option offense than we were used to. In it, Tim would switch from halfback, to fullback. The two other freshmen, Jake and Fred, would be the halfbacks. It looked interesting, but put a lot of work on me. I was supposed to read the defense on every play. From that, I was supposed to determine who to get the ball to. I would have to study a lot of Whitehorse film in the next two weeks.

Coach Nelson must have said something to dad about it. When we got home, there was a new projector in the family room, along with some film reels. He had managed to get film of University of Texas games. Most of my evenings were spent studying it with dad, while he helped me understand it. For the first couple of days, it seemed complicated, but then something seemed to click, and I began to catch on.

We split time in practice, but the majority of the reps were for this weeks game. Just because the last meeting was easy, it didn't mean Trail City would hand anything to us. Most of the Wishbone time was spent on how to NOT fumble.

Friday was a home game, and the place was packed to overflowing. My whole family was there, as usual. Bernie, Frank, and Jean were sitting with grandpa and the folks, while Denise and Ann had the best seats in the house, as cheerleaders. Gail was back on the squad now, but as a member only. She still seemed happy to be there.

Trail City must not have scouted our last game. They were obviously confused from the start. They looked at our formation like we were aliens, wondering what happened to the option. I probably could have had four hundred yards passing again, but coach wanted to work on some running plays. The way he mixed it up was devastating. The final score was 76-0, and five of the scores were on defense. Once we had a big lead, they tried to pass. Our secondary was a lot better than the first time we had played them, and so was our pass rush.

Charlie came by Saturday with Ayasha and good news. According to the Oncologist, her cancer was gone. The only problem, was the questions that followed. They didn't like the answers they received, but that was alright. It was all they were going to get. We'd have to be very careful if we ever did this again.

Bernie and I talked it over some, and we were all for taking the chance anyway. The health care on the reservation wasn't that good, especially for children. Because of the time and distance, we'd only be able to do it in an emergency though. we discussed the idea of spending a few days there in the summer. If we could do that, Charlie volunteered to find someone to do any work on the ranch we might need done.

Monday was all Wishbone, and my homework paid off, big time. Dad's knowledge of the game, with a lot of input from Frank, had taught me a lot. Coach even drafted them to help get us ready for Whitehorse. It would be the toughest challenge until the playoffs, and he wanted it bad.

My plate was pretty full. Between school, practice, homework, and chores, there wasn't a spare minute. Thankfully, I had the best way to relax waiting in my room every night. Half of the time, there were three ways. Being busy was a good thing. It helped keep my mind off of the pending trip to New Mexico.

By the time game day rolled around, we were ready. No one even seemed nervous on the bus. Every person on the team was confident, and when the game started, it showed.

After our defense forced a punt, we started on our thirty-eight yard line. In five plays, we scored. Every one had been a run, and like Trail City, Whitehorse was confused. They had scouted us, and what they saw now was definitely not on any film they had. They never did figure it out, and we won 48-7. I only threw five passes the whole game, and three had been touchdowns to the tight end.

Promise was the last game of our regular season, and we were looking forward to playing them. Their team was even smaller than ours, as was the town. We had three times the population, and it showed. They hadn't won a game all year.

November was pretty cold, so trips to our cave were rare. Bernie and I had been practicing, though. The power, whatever it might be, was much weaker at the ranch. We could still tap into it though. When we did this, I actually got to be the first to discover something. The power could actually be stored! The amount was limited, of course, but it could be done.

I have to admit that with the playoffs coming up, the thought crossed my mind to use it in a game. With a little creativity, I could be unstoppable. The temptation was brief, thankfully. What would winning mean, if it was done by cheating? It just wasn't my style.

I still hadn't bought a ring for Bernie. It wasn't because I didn't want to. Unfortunately, they were pretty expensive. Money was one thing I didn't have. I toyed with the idea of trying to create one, but that didn't seem right, either. The four of us spent most of our time together. Bernie had her license now, and had taken over most of the driving. We still used the truck, though.

The game went just as we had expected. The 62-0 score was actually lower than it might have been. A few more freshmen had been brought up, and they played quite a bit. Depth was our biggest enemy, and we needed bodies. The real test would begin next week.

We actually got a decent seed in the tournament. Fourth was a big accomplishment for a school of our size, undefeated or not. At least we wouldn't be playing one of the big powerhouses in our first game. We knew that whoever we did play, they would be the best team we had faced. As coach had put it, we were nothing more than "a big fish in a small pond". Now, the roles would be reversed. We were undefeated, and the team we would be playing, Perry Central, was 7-2. We were still the heavy underdog.

Coach Nelson decided to use the Wishbone against them, after studying film from their games. I could see why. Perry was really big up front, and blitzed a lot. They weren't very fast though, and a triple option should confuse the hell out of them. We worked the 'bone' exclusively all week, and I was seeing plays in my sleep.

I still made sure to pull my weight on the ranch. All of my chores were done every day, and I even took the wagon out and cut some more wood on Wednesday. Along the way, I went on my first date. Bernie drove, and we went to the movies. We saw 'Blazing Saddles', and it was a riot! Both of us laughed our asses off! The town didn't have much in the way of a gathering spot for teenagers. In our case, it was the local drive-in food joint. After spending an hour or so talking to people, we headed home.

We told Ann and Denise a little about the movie, and they made us promise to take them next week. We both agreed quickly. Actually, we felt kind of guilty the whole night. Somehow, it didn't seem quite right for them not to be with us. Studying took up a lot of time, too. All four of us had straight A's, and intended to keep it that way.

The trip to the game was a long one. We were worried about our opponents, but more concerned about one other thing. Since the game was so far away, we figured that there wouldn't be anyone there to cheer for us. Man, were we wrong!

We were still warming up when the busses arrived. There were seven of them, and they were all full. I think the whole town was there! This went a long way in improving our attitude. There was no way we were going to let them down!

The 'Bone' worked like a charm. It wasn't that we moved the ball so well, or even the fact that we scored most of the time. The deciding factor was that it took so long to do it. Perry scored almost every time they got the ball, too. We had the ball a lot more than they did, though. More than twice as long, in fact. The final score was 41-28, and we went home winners.

Before we even left the stadium, we knew who we would be playing the following week. We HAD to win this one. We would be playing O'Gorman, from Sioux Falls. That was the school that I would have been attending if we hadn't been adopted. It wouldn't be easy. They were a big school, and undefeated also.

On Monday, coach told us that he believed we could do it. We would have to change from the Wishbone, though. O'Gorman was way too fast for it to work, and too disciplined. He decided to use another formation that we had practiced. If last week had been tough, this week would be a killer. The Wing-T was a bitch to learn. The fakes had to be so convincing that you almost needed actors to run it. It was still an option offense, but we could pass, too. The objective was the same. Control the ball!

Coach got hold of film from Penn State, Notre Dame, and Delaware. All three ran the offense, and ran it well. Our plays came right out of the film. The biggest advantage was that no high school team in the state was running it. The hope was to catch O'Gorman totally unprepared. Our coach really knew how to screw up an opponents scouting!

School the next week was a blur. The team had been popular before, but now it was bordering on the ridiculous. We maintained our discipline in practice, though. I made sure the whole team knew how much I wanted to win this one, and that seemed to increase the intensity even more.

If Perry Central was confused, O'Gorman was much worse than that. I think they didn't even have a clue where the ball was over ninety percent of the time. Heck, once we ran the same play four times in a row. It worked every single time! I think the short passing game was what really did it. We'd catch them crowding the line, and I'd hit one of the backs across the middle. It went for a long gain every time we did it. 52-6 never felt so good. I even saw some of our old tormentors in the stands. It was great!

We finally got some respect after that one. The offense had worked so well that coach decided to stick with it. Another Sioux Falls school, Roosevelt, was next. They were a lot like O'Gorman, and shouldn't have enough time to figure out the offense. The hope was that we hadn't run the same one two games in a row, they wouldn't be sure what to even prepare for. Their only loss had been to the team we had just defeated.

Coach was right, as usual. It was closer, but we still won 48-14. We had done it. Our team had matched dad's in accomplishment. We would play More, from Rapid City, in the semi-finals. They were 8-2 in the regular season, but had been on a run since losing their first two games. That run ended when they played us. The Wing-T completely baffled them, too. That one was 48-7, and they hardly touched the ball on offense.

We would be playing West Central, from Hartford, in the championship game. It was the first for our small school, and the town was going nuts. There were banners across the streets, signs in every business, and everyone we saw wished us good luck. Oh, and Gail started going out with Tony. She really had changed a lot, and people were starting to accept her again. I guess it wasn't actually 'again', though. This time, it was different. Her friends were now 'friends', instead of cowed admirers. She was a lot happier, and it showed.

Wizards Apprentice 4 the Vale in WinterChapter 14

It did not take long, once the Wizard Eliun had introduced himself, for the rest of the crowd to disperse. "They'll be back at dinner time," Fenthil offered as he too prepared to leave. He paused at the doorway and looked back at me. "This is communal living for the most part, Pacasin. A small community of the elderly men and women, who for the most part, had only one hard choice outside of accepting a life in the hermitage. Remember that while you're here, please." I nodded bowed to...

"Oh goat beards and blood!," the wizard spat, making a sign I didn't recognize. "Not another one!" "Another one?" I asked, stunned. I wasn't the first person to come looking for the wizard Eliun? "Another researcher seeking some arcane bit of knowledge lost to the rest of the world," The drama with which he spoke the words suggested it was something often said here in the hermitage. "We get one every century or so, and it hasn't even been that long since the last one. Five or...

"You called, my lady?" the elder Vulkai bowed his head, nose almost touching the ground. "I did," Ilesa nodded, smiling. "Thank you Ketna, for coming so quickly." "The Vulkai do honor the Witch of the Vale," Ketna replied, raising his head again and grinning in the Vulkai way. "As I honor the Vulkai," Ilessa bowed her head this time, then lifting it with a matching grin. "I wish I did not have to call on you, but I must. I must send you where I cannot go." "What is your will,...

Wizards Apprentice 4 the Vale in WinterChapter 21

If you listen to Gaen, you will hear things. Learn things. If you listen, you will come to know Gaen's will. The philosophers have long said this, but to my knowledge, they did not listen as I have learned to listen, and perhaps none have listened so. Just as I have come to learn about my own song, I have come to understand that if I leave the song alone as it comes to me, rather than grabbing it — ah! Well then there are things to be learned in the song Gaen sings. Some of what is there...

Wizards Apprentice 4 the Vale in WinterChapter 4

Until it reached the mountains in the west, the road to Silverlake was the same road I'd traveled two years earlier to Warmuth Bridge. Perhaps it was the same road, but there was little about it that seemed familiar. "The forest is still growing at a rapid pace." I observed to my master as we rode through lightly forested woods where once open plains had been. "It is," he replied with a soft sigh. "It grows southward so fast you can almost watch it move. The northern edges are so...

The people of the Bitter Peat called themselves Tibu, which meant 'People of the Smoke' in their own tongue. They were an unimpressive lot, physically, reminding me of the Raspe, in that they had the thin, knobby-jointed appendages and the bristly fur, but they had neither the height or the air of detached majesty I associated with the Raspe. Short, barely more than waist high on me, their furred faces featured odd, hard-plated mouth and jaw segments that managed to just barely avoid...

"You know I tell you more than anyone, Ethric my friend, but you know as well that I cannot tell you everything I know. Not even about this." Wizards Apprentice 4 the Vale in WinterChapter 10

The road south of Rheev's Landing, as I'd learned it was called, brought more of what we'd seen recently. Five days travel brought us to another large residence and another Magister, Dag Rhondel. The keep itself was called Cherry Point Terrace, and word of us had obviously traveled the river faster than we had, for we were expected. Magister Rhondel seemed fascinated by Labo and Kei, as was his pet wizard Aracus. It did not take me long to dislike this wizard, and to come to the...

There were six wagons, twelve drovers and a half dozen outriders, not counting myself. I was what the wagon master called 'supercargo'. I was along for the trip, but not accounted for on either the train's manifest or her roster. "We're hauling rough sawn logs, so there's little need for guards or a night watch on these hauls," Drummon told me conversationally. He was the oldest of the outriders, and he'd taken a liking to me when he'd seen the tattoos on my hands. "Still, there...

The call of winter wolves had followed me into my sleep, but it was Deak's call that I followed out of it. I awoke to a drizzly world with a cold, soggy campfire and dank furs that had cold condensation clinging to them. Were I not a wizard, privy to the usual tricks a wizard knows, I might have spent a miserable morning getting myself ready to travel, but fortunately I knew enough to get me and my furs dry and warm and with the tricky parts accomplished, quickly got my saddlebags repacked,...

Chelsea parked her car and rushed toward the Convention Center entrance. The team was supposed to meet-up at 10:00 and she was late. She jogged across the giant parking lot in her stacked heeled oxfords, more than a little self-conscious as her short skirt flew up and her boobs bounced with every step. She found her crew at the appointed spot. They could see her coming from way down the hall and waved with excitement. As she got close, Ahmed, Dave, and Jackson broke out in shit-eating grins....

The wizard sat on the park bench reading his paper. An argument happening a few yards away drew his attention away. He scanned the park and spotted a couple mid-argument. The man was pretty average looking, around 6 foot tall and appeared in his mid-twenties. He was not thin but was not fat either. His brown hair was short, barely touching his furrowed brow as he shouted at his girlfriend. She, on the other hand, was quite attractive. She had red hair that framed a sharp, but attractive...

Wizards Apprentice 4 the Vale in WinterChapter 11

The walls of Montcairn are high, and the city gate is wide, and the road that leads to it is teeming. These are facts. Facts that I suspect are generally unchanging enough to seem eternal. For me, the walls were still high, but they seemed to have sprouted men in armor, wielding weapons. The gates were still wide, but closed. Upon that teeming road, I stood in the middle of a bubble of bleak solitude, save for the lone soldier who approached me. "State your business, traveler," he spoke...

The sword in my hand felt good, but it didn't feel good enough. I was growing tired of practice swords and borrowed daggers, and so had begun to haunt the shops in Trilin looking for the ones I could call my own. I had changed weapons often enough over the years as I grew into myself, so this shouldn't be such a difficult thing, but it was. During our chat beside the fireplace one night, my master listened yet again to my complaint, then spoke. "What have I always told you when it comes...

Winter in Kaya Tumic was peaceful and sedate on its surface, with quiet, snow-covered scenery and warm cozy cottages nestled along the river and across the hills, smoke drifting lazily from chimneys here and there. He seemed to take pleasure in loaning me out. My sentiments regarding the...

The shore was rough; as rugged and desolate as almost every other stretch of the Fedricksland coast. "I told you we should have taken a ship out of Ovrgruden," Kei moaned. "You told?" I woke late and lingered over my campfire and my breakfast. It would take only a half day's riding to get to where I was going, and anytime today would be a fine time with me. The skies had cleared again and it was nice to wait for the chill of the night to abate before setting out. Deak seemed to appreciate it, along with the relaxed pace. Wizard Gone WildChapter 6

Sam figured that if he did anything to the assembled demons, it had to be big. He was afraid that anything relatively small would just aggravate them and make them fight even harder. He asked Agar, "Is there anything that the demons are really afraid of. What could we do to cause real panic in their ranks?" "I don't really know for sure, but I have heard that they are afraid of cold. If there were some way to make a cold blast hit them, it would really shake them up. I have no magic for...

Wizard of Oz 1

This is a rather darker approach on the storyline of the Wizard of the Oz, a classic story. Warning, this has reference to child abuse and beating. Dorothy walked down the alleys. The snow had begun melting and the water was forming small rivers that danced towards the sewers. She pulled her coat closer; she was getting colder. But she was afraid to return to home, afraid to face her...

Wizarding World ENF

The ladies of the wizarding world are finding themselves naked and embarrassed, sometimes in very public places, most times with a magical twist. They could be naked as a result of a magical object, spell, by the actions of an enemy, or even by their own hand! Though the title implies, it is not strictly ENF, confident nude girls and exhibitionists are also welcome! All characters in this story are 18 or above.

WizardChapter 12

Two weeks later, Jayne was setting up residence next door. Taffy, still sad at the loss of Ted, was glad for the company. Jayne had the twins and Taffy, plus getting re-established to take her mind off Ted's death. The union lawyers were mounting a case for a large compensation package. Life was returning to some semblance of normalcy. The babies were thriving and Taff was fully into 'mother mode'. Between her and Jayne, they would have to be the most well cared for kids in the...

Wizard Gone WildChapter 7

Herc was so pleased at the results of the first raid that he wanted to try a second one the following night. He hoped to wear down the mercenaries before they even reached Alieria. This time, though, he decided on a little variety. Herc felt that the walking fire was the appropriate form of attack this time. He took Teekay along as a kind of insurance, but was sure that he wouldn't be needed. This time, the fire illusionists were left home, and only the firebrands went on the raid. The...

WizardChapter 2

Six hours of driving and I was bushed, even with the two hourly breaks it was very wearing. Unlike a motor car, the bus made a lot more noise and the steering was heavy. Our short trips to the beach weren't as demanding as they were only short hauls and I was fresh. Without being a sook, I took half a day off and did a bit of sightseeing. Two days later and I was in the Barossa Valley and looking for the vineyard I was to be picking for. Finding the vineyard, I was directed to a spot where...

WizardChapter 3

Back at the factory uncle Frank brought me up to date with the current workload. During my absence we had taken on three new employees so the first job was to introduce myself to them and to catch up with the old employees. The first two men were new Australians, even with their broken English we seemed to connect; the third chap Brian Moore, seemed a bit distant. "Do we have a problem Brian?" "Yeah, just because you're the boss's nephew don't think you can push me around, you're...

WizardChapter 4

While we had been busy buying and re-erecting the new building, I became more deeply immersed in the running of the business. Frank reiterated his desire to taper off to retirement. He would still be a major factor and would always be party to any decisions that effected the future of the company. "You and the twins are the future Tony, young blood, new ideas, I'll be looking over your shoulders but I won't interfere unless I see something dramatically wrong ... then we will...

WizardChapter 7

All the data finally collated we shut down our laptops and called it a day. We sat around and chewed the fat with the guys from the mine, I was amazed when they told me the expected yields from the site; still in reflection, Vic and company wouldn't be sporting that type of money for the village if it wasn't viable. Heading back to the donga, I side tracked for a leak. Back in the cabin I found that Taff had joined the two sleeping bags together and put the the blankets on top. "Won't...

WizardChapter 8

The alarm clock ringing brought me to a fuzzy awareness. "Good morning sweetheart." Argh, bad breath. "'Morning Taff, don't want to be rude but ... morning breath love." "Sorry, got a bit of a tooth ache and my mouth tastes like the bottom of a bird cage." "Hope it's not too painful." "Nah, I'll take a few Panadol with breakfast, should do the trick." Later in the day I could see the tooth was giving her problems and suggested she see a dentist. "It's getting worse...

WizardChapter 9

After clearing the smell of shit from my nose, (riding shotgun on a dunny cart was interesting but not as a full time occupation). I was headed for Pakenham to pick pears and apples. Stopping at a cafe for a bite to eat I got talking to the waitress, it was another one of those one horse town so I started to tease the girl. "What do they do after they roll up the footpath for the night?" I quipped with a cheeky grin on my face. "Well city slicker, there's a dance in the Mechanics Hall...

WizardChapter 11

Mum, Aunty Mary, Taff and I travelled over to meet Taffy's folk. I was glad to get out off the car, by the time we reached their home, between 'girl' talk and not too subtle comments about our age difference, I was just about ready to explode. After introductions, Ted gave me the wink and suggested we let the women do their secret business while we men folk discussed the merits of a few different brands of beer, an Aussie tradition deeply seated in the male psyche. Finally, all the...

Caleb 27 Back again

Dianna led us into a room, holding the painting I had given her. I could see she had tears in her eyes, and I knew they were happy ones. I was pleased that I had managed to repair at least some of the damage I had done at the farm when I’d been so angry over the attack. She walked to one side of the room, and I saw the photograph the painting was based on on the wall. It was yellowed and faded, in a small frame, and was about half the size of the painting. Dianna took down the photograph and...

Don’t get me wrong, Patty, my sister, is a great fuck and I love giving it to her as often as possible. However, mom is something special. The Scorned Finished

I remember the scene like it was yesterday. The argument with my father in front of our little hut. He always did say I was way too angry for an eight-year-old, I suppose he was right. When suddenly the raiders appeared, we didn't even notice for the sounds of our own yelling. They rode through our home, the collection of small and frail shelters we affectionately called a 'town', slaughtering everything that was in their way like children killing bugs. When my father finally noticed something...

Up the Creek

I never have been one for camping. But, when you're only 18 years old, and it's considered to be "important family time", you don't usually get a choice in whether or not you get dragged along. Such was the case this weekend. had decided that they'd pick me up from school and we'd head straight off to go camping. We were headed up into the El Dorado hills along the Cosumnes River, "we" meaning my parents my sister, her friend Patti, and me. Riding in the camper isn't necessarily bad, and in the...

Oil of RosesChapter 28

It's hard for a man to resist a woman who wants him. It's harder still for a man with a small man's inferiority complex to resist a prostitute who comes back to him because she's never been loved like he loved her and she doesn't want money, she just has to have more of him. And if the man is predisposed toward flights of egotistical fantasy, all the better, it makes her job much easier still. The woman who had been so helpful in getting Nick's team in the first time served the same...

Black List II Russian WinterChapter 1

The phone rings bringing Spencer out of a dead sleep. Fumbling for it, he nearly drops it on the floor before finally answering it. “Reeds,” he says gruffly and still half asleep. “Reeds,” Roger’s voice comes over the phone. “Is Roberts there with you?” he asks. “Yeah, she laying right here,” Spencer says. The odd question, combined with the need for sleep and it being the weekend confuses him as to why Roger would be asking such a question. Roger breathes a sigh of relief, something a...
