March 17, 2000, Apple Orchard Bed-and-Breakfast near Montpelier, Vermont

“KATY!” I squealed.

“BIRGIT!” she squealed back.

My dad and moms laughed, and I ran to Katy for a hug. She scooped me up, gave each other a peck on the lips, and then she put me down so I could hug Davey.

“Hi, Birgit!” Davey said.

“Hi!”

We hugged and he kissed me, too. Then I hugged Amy. I saw Dad hug Katy, and wondered if they were going to have sex again. I could ask Katy because she’d tell me. We shared all kinds of girl secrets and she was the only person who knew everything I wrote in my journal. I called her about once a month to talk, but it was better to be here, and even better when I was here during the summer for a whole week without my parents, aunts, and uncles.

“Steve, Tom, Kurt, bring the bags in,” Katy called to my dad and uncles. “You have your usual rooms, so just take the bags right up. Then we’ll give you a tour of the addition, which is actually bigger than the original house!”

“Drill Sergeants have nothing on that woman,” Uncle Tom muttered.

“I heard that, Tom Quinn!” Katy said trying to sound annoyed but she was smiling.

“To run this zoo she HAS to have that kind of demeanor,” Uncle Kurt said. “Can you imagine having forty houseguests every day for the entire year?”

“Can I take my bag to your room, Katy?” I asked.

“Yes. Davey, go with Birgit, please.”

“Yes, Mom!” he replied.

I got my pink roll-along suitcase from my dad and pulled it into the house. I had to push down the handle so I could carry it up the two flights of stairs to get to Katy’s room where she had a roll-away bed for me. I put my suitcase on the bed, then Davey and I went back downstairs. He and I got along great, not like my dumb brothers. Well, Albert was really nice, but Matthew was like Jesse, and Michael was kind of in between.

“What can I do, Katy?” I asked when I saw her in the large room with the fireplace.

“I was just about to show everyone the new addition. After we do that, then you and I can bake some apple pies and make some maple ice cream.”

“Yes!” I quickly agreed.

I followed along to look at the new rooms, new kitchen, new dining room, and new fireplace room. It was nice, but not very interesting. Katy showed us the new sauna which was even bigger than the one we had at home, and then everyone went to do other stuff while I went with Katy to what was now the ‘old’ kitchen.

“How have you been, Birgit?” Katy asked.

“Good! Davey keeps getting bigger!”

“Yes, he does. He’ll start first grade in August. You’re in sixth, right?”

“Yes! I’ll be in seventh after the summer.”

“You’re getting big, too!”

“But I haven’t got my period yet!” I complained.

“You’re only eleven, so that’s not surprising. But periods aren’t any fun!”

“But it means I’m a woman! And I’ll get my boobs and get pubic hair and look like a woman!”

“Look out world,” Katy laughed.

“How old were you when you had sex?”

“Eighteen, and it was the night of my Senior Prom. Do you know what that is?”

“Yes, a big dance at the end of High School. My mom wasn’t allowed to go so my dad took Aunt Bethany. I wonder if they had sex?”

Katy laughed, “I suspect if you ask your dad or Bethany, they’ll tell you. They don’t keep any secrets from you, do they?”

“If they did, how would I know?” I asked. “They’re secrets!”

Katy laughed, “I suppose that’s true, but your dad tells you anything you want to know, right?”

“He won’t tell me all about the first Birgit until I’m older. But we saw where she’s buried, so I don’t understand.”

“I think your dad wants to explain everything about her, and he thinks that even though you’re very mature, you aren’t ready to understand just yet.”

“They loved each other very much,” I said. “I think Dad still misses her sometimes. Especially when he sees Aunt Karin.”

“I think so, too.”

“Are you going to have sex with my dad?”

“We might,” Katy replied. “We have to talk about it, first. We never assume.”

“But you like it?” I asked.

Katy smiled, “I do. You know I like being with Amy most, but your dad is very special to me.”

“And to me! What’s it like to kiss a girl?”

“Probably the same as kissing a boy!”

“I’ve never had an adult kiss!”

“You’re only eleven, Birgit! You can wait a bit for your first kiss ... and even longer for your first...”

“Fuck?” I giggled, interrupting her.

“Yes, you little brat! But I was going to say ‘love affair’! Come help me with the pies!”

“Your daughter is a real trip,” Katy said as we sat close together in front of the fireplace.

“You’re telling me?” I chuckled. “What did my Pumpkin do now?”

“She’s just being her eleven-going-on-twenty-one self! She’s itching to get her period and to develop.”

“She’s been bugging Kara about that, but Kara didn’t develop until she was fourteen and my sister was thirteen, so I think Miss Birgit has another year or perhaps two, before she gets her wish.”

“Every girl dreams of getting her period, then immediately upon getting it wonders why she ever wanted it!”

“I believe that!”

“She also complained about not having had an adult kiss, and about you not telling her all the details about Birgit yet.”

“Those two complaints Kara has heard. The second one is the only complaint about me that she’ll utter to anyone else.”

“She also asked if we were going to make love.”

“And what did you tell her?”

“That we’d talk about it, the way we always do. Amy is supportive.”

“She feels I’m safe, and it lets you fulfill your very specific need.”

“You?”

“Me,” I replied. “And the ultimate question, which we have to ask each year, is what you need from me.”

“Besides expansion capital?” Katy asked with a silly smile.

“You were always pretty good at getting something ELSE to expand!” I teased.

“Perky breasts and freckles do it for you every time!”

“Very true. Did my precocious daughter have anything else to say?”

“Not for her dad’s ears.”

I nodded, “Understood. Whatever it is, she’ll tell me when she’s ready.”

“I love the faith and trust you put in your kids, and in me. Not many parents would even consider allowing their kid to have the kind of relationships you allow yours.”

“Because society has gone ‘full retard’ on childrearing,” I groused. “I swear, it’s like my mom wrote the ‘How to fuck up your kids’ book and everyone is not only buying it, but taking it as Gospel. What are you doing for Davey?”

“Don Edson, the Sheriff, took him camping last fall. He’ll take him hunting this summer.”

I chuckled, “You’re going to let your son shoot Bambi’s mom?”

“You know I’m a libertarian! And have no trouble with guns, despite being from Boston. Amy grew up around here, so it’s a normal thing for her, too. And our guests love venison when we can serve it. Don brings us some of his every year.”

“Very cool. We’d like to have Davey visit this summer, if you and Amy are OK with it.”

“I’d offer an exchange, but your daughter would kill me if I sent Davey away when she was going to be here!”

“A boy who doesn’t mind her bossing him around!” I chuckled.

“There will be plenty of those in a few years! And you never complained about women bossing you around. Heck, you sought them out! Your entire company is women in the executive suite except for your HR guy.”

“True. We kind of drifted from the question.”

“Tomorrow afternoon, I’d like to make love with you for a few hours, if you’d like to make love with me.”

“Absolutely.”

March 18, 2000, Apple Orchard Bed-and-Breakfast near Montpelier, Vermont

“Did you have fun?” I asked Katy when I saw her on Saturday afternoon.

“I love your dad.”

“I love him, too! But you love Amy more, right?”

“I love Amy differently. Just as your dad loves me differently from how he loves your moms, or how he loved Jorge.”

“Jorge was really nice,” I said, feeling sad. “I miss him.”

“And so does your dad. Do you know about his friend Stephie?”

“Jason’s wife before Abbie? The one who died from cancer?”

“Yes.”

“Mom told me about her; she died before I was born. Dad has her picture next to the ones he has of Jorge and the first Birgit. He misses her, too.”

“That’s what happens when someone dies, we miss them.”

“I miss Uncle Nick, too. What happens when we die?” I asked.

“Nobody knows for sure. Your brother Jesse would say people go to heaven, and a lot of people would agree. Your dad would say he doesn’t know, but he’s sure that there is something. Other people would say nothing.”

“What do you think?”

“I think we’ll be together with everyone who we ever loved and who ever loved us. Have you asked your dad about this?”

“No. Should I?”

“He’s one of the smartest, most thoughtful people I know. I think it would be good for you to talk to him about this.”

“And sex?”

“That you should probably talk to me or your moms about.”

“Why?”

“Because we’re girls and we know how girls think and feel.”

“Do you know how boys think?” I asked.

“NOBODY knows how boys think!” Katy said.

We both laughed but we had to stop talking because my dad and my mom and mom came into the room.

“Dad?” I asked.

“Yes, Pumpkin?” he replied.

“Can we go for a walk?”

“Just you and me?”

“Yes.”

“Sure. Let’s get our coats.”

Dad and I went to the closet by the front door, got our coats, put them on, then went outside. I put my hand in his and he squeezed once, the way he always does, and then we walked down the driveway holding hands.

“What’s the matter, Pumpkin?” he asked.

“What happens when we die?”

“Are you thinking about the first Birgit?”

“And Jorge.”

“I don’t know the answer for sure,” Dad said. “But I can tell you something that happened to both me and Aunt Bethany before you were born.”

“Can I ask you a question first?”

“Sure.”

“Katy said you took Aunt Bethany to Prom because my mom couldn’t go. Why couldn’t she go?”

“Because her dad was mean, like my mom.”

“Did you and Aunt Bethany have sex at Prom?”

Dad laughed, “Not AT Prom, Pumpkin! They would have arrested us! But after Prom, at a hotel, yes.”

“Is that normal?”

“It used to be, but now with the way parents are, no.”

“Rachel’s mom was OK with her having sex.”

“The parents of the ‘cousins’ are mostly going to be OK with that. But remember, we don’t talk about it with anyone.”

“Rachel said she really liked having sex with you!” I giggled. “And she wants to do it again!”

“That’s between Rachel and me, Pumpkin. Remember what I said when you made the coupons.”

“What were you going to tell me about?”

“Uhm, Pumpkin, I just realized that I can’t tell you that without explaining something that happened when I was sixteen, and I’m not sure you’re ready to hear it just yet.”

“Another thing like that?”

“Yes, and I’m sorry I’m exasperating you.”

“What does that mean? Ex-ass-purr-ating?”

“Frustrating and annoying.”

“So, like Jesse!” I declared.

“So you say,” Dad chuckled. “Anyway, what I can tell you is that Aunt Bethany and I both had the same dream, about the same people who died. I had it many, many years before Bethany did, and I never told her about it. Then, when she had her accident, the one where she almost died, she had a dream just like mine. She told me about it, and that’s when I realized there was a lot more to the universe than I thought. So now, I think there is something after we die. I just don’t know what it is.”

“Jesse says it’s heaven.”

“It might be, Pumpkin.”

“Do you believe in God?” I asked.

“That’s another thing I don’t know about.”

“But Katy said you were really smart!”

“Katy’s sweet,” Dad said with a smile. “But I’m smart about computers and business, not about God or heaven or things like that.”

“Sex?”

Dad laughed, “I suppose so. Some people would question whether I was smart or stupid.”

“Because they don’t like that you have two wives and Maria Cristina and Liz and dall-yances?”

“Yes.”

“But they all want to be with you!”

“Yes, that’s true. And that’s why we don’t talk about these things outside our family. And that’s true when you decide you’re ready to have sex.”

“Who can I tell?”

“If you need to tell someone, your moms or Katy.”

“Not you?”

Dad smiled, “Pumpkin, some things dads don’t need to know!”

“But you think it’s OK, right?”

“Yes, of course. When you’re old enough, it’s up to you to decide who you want to do it with. I promise to get you whatever birth control you need, but you have to promise to always use it.”

“I like babies, but I don’t want to have one for a LONG time!”

“Good!”

“But you want grandkids, right?”

“Yes, of course. But not until you and your brothers and sisters are ready. And that’s going to be awhile.”

“I think Matthew and Chelsea will have them first!”

“We’ll see.”

“How come Francesca’s mom is being so dumb?”

“Remember what I said about some parents? She’s one of the ones who thinks you have to be married to have sex.”

“But Francesca said that her mom had sex with Stan before they got married!”

“Did you hear that from Jesse or Francesca?”

“Francesca! I talk to her at school. She’s really angry with her mom because she hasn’t been able to fuc ... be with Jesse for two weeks!”

Dad laughed, “You know I don’t mind that word, but it’s probably better you don’t get used to using it because lots of people don’t like it.”

“How come we have to be how other people want us to be instead of how we want to be?”

“Well, sometimes, it’s because that’s what the law says. Other times, it’s because we need to have a job or go to school or do something that other people have to approve. So we have to act a certain way to get those things.”

“But that’s wrong!” I protested.

“Yes, Pumpkin, it is. So long as nobody is being hurt, it’s wrong to make other people do what you want instead of leaving them be.”

I didn’t answer, and Dad knew that meant I just wanted to be quiet so I could think about the stuff we talked about. I liked cuddling with my dad and not saying anything, or like now, walking with him, holding his hand. I thought about other things, too, which I wrote in my journal, but I couldn’t tell Dad about them, at least not yet. Maybe when I looked like a woman I could tell him and he would do what I wanted.

March 19, 2000, Apple Orchard Bed-and-Breakfast near Montpelier, Vermont

“She’s working her way up to the question,” Kara said.

“I know,” I replied. “And you know what I’ll tell her. It simply can’t happen. It nearly destroyed my sister and I don’t even want to begin to contemplate what it would do to my own daughter.”

“She’s not your sister, and I don’t think it would end that way, but neither you, nor Jess, could EVER contemplate it, for a myriad of reasons; and I could never agree for my own reasons.”

“Kara, whatever your reasons, or my reasons, or Jessica’s reasons might be, it’s wrong. Period. Of that I am completely confident. There are no gray areas. None.”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply you should. Did she have anything else to say you can share?”

“We mostly talked about death and the afterlife, but she also told me that Francesca is very angry with her mom.”

“Gee, there’s a surprise,” Kara deadpanned.

“I know, but there really isn’t anything any of us can do. Jesse is singularly pissed at Carol as well. But Carol has Francesca going to a friend’s house to be watched by the friend’s mom after school and when Carol is out, so that pretty much makes it impossible for them to get together. She did say one other thing.”

“What?”

“It appears Rachel talked to Birgit.”

Kara laughed, “Of COURSE she did! And that means Tiffany got the story, too. Those three are like the Borg collective and their hive mind!”

I laughed, “Resistance is futile?”

“When have you denied your daughter ANYTHING?”

“Point taken. She said Rachel wants to be with me again.”

“So give her a fucking she’ll never forget, but let her know that’s the end of it. In fact, give her what Elyse got her last time - take her around the world twice!”

“Jesus, Kara,” I said through my laughter.

“Hey, if these little girls want to fuck, then show them what fucking is all about!”

“I’ll take it under advisement,” I grinned. “And speaking of that, I’m seeing Misty next Saturday.”

“To fuck her brains out so she can’t walk, talk, or see straight?” Kara smirked.

“That is what she wants.”

“Then give it to her, Snuggle Bear!”

“You get off on this, don’t you?”

“Perhaps,” Kara said primly. “And I may have a candidate for my fantasy.”

“You have to be absolutely sure, Kara. And I have to talk to her. And Jess has to approve.”

“I remember the parameters, and I think you’ll be very happy if it comes to pass. But I’m still not sure she’s the right girl.”

“If and when you are, then I’ll talk to her.”

“I suppose we should pack,” Kara said. “We have to leave in about an hour.”

“Unfortunately. These times away always seem so short; even the week in the UP.”

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 21 Georg and Maria

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 14 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 25 The Puzzle and the Cat Part II

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

We’ll have some family time this afternoon. I don’t have any plans.” “Good!” I hugged her and the rest of the kids, then went to find Kara. September 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Good morning, Sensei,” I said, bowing to Sensei Jim. “Good morning!” he said waving me to a chair in his office. “How was your trip?” I asked. “Enlightening. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. I nodded to one of the wingback chairs, she sat down in one, and I sat down in the other. “Is something wrong?” she...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. On Saturday, we’d have several optional activities and then on Sunday we’d head back to our host families. After dinner on Friday, I took Pam’s hand and we walked towards the river. November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. May 1979 The limo dropped me at home about 9:00pm. I took my stuff to my room, stripped, and hung up the tux. The rest of the things went into the hamper. I took a shower, put on shorts and a t-shirt, and walked down the hall into my dad’s office. July 1983, Milford, Ohio My drive to Ohio was filled with wild swings of emotion. After quickly driving Anala home I had set out for Milford, driving as fast as I thought I could get away with, slowing only when warned to do so by my radar detector. I’d told Nancy that I’d come straight to her house and asked her to call my dad and let him know so that Stephanie wasn’t worried. I pulled into the Blanchards’ driveway at 3:30pm, having managed to avoid any run-ins with the Indiana State Police...
