October 23, 1987, Chicago, Illinois

“They voted him down?” I asked when I went home for lunch.

“58 to 42,” Elyse said. “Probably the most qualified man ever to be nominated. Disgusting, really.”

“Ted Kennedy demagogued this nomination the whole way. I watched some of the hearings on CSPAN and Judge Bork made the senators look like idiots.”

“Not hard to do. Oliver North did the same thing back in July when he testified.”

“I loved Brendan Sullivan’s line during that hearing: I’m not a potted plant. I’m here as the lawyer. I bet Melanie pulls that one out in court sometime! I wonder who Reagan will nominate now.”

“I wonder what Reagan is going to do to retaliate against the six Republicans who voted against the nomination.”

I thought about it for a moment before responding.

“Not much, I suspect, because that still would have only given Bork 48 votes. The Democrats were never going to let someone like Bork on the court, and they have 54 seats in the Senate. Reagan will have to nominate someone acceptable to them. The Republicans blew it when they lost the Senate in the elections last fall. On the plus side, Biden’s presidential campaign imploded because he lifted a speech from Neil Kinnock, the head of the Labour Party in England.”

“It just doesn’t seem right the way Bork was treated,” Elyse said.

“Maybe not, but he got his hearing, and his vote. Most people expected him to drop out once the Judiciary Committee voted 9-5 against him. I think he should have been confirmed, but the Senate didn’t, and they’re the ones who have to consent. I also think Ted Kennedy is an ass who probably should have gone to jail over Chappaquiddick, but the people of Massachusetts elected him to represent them, so he gets his say.”

“Wait! I thought you didn’t approve of direct election of senators!”

“I don’t. But it’s in the Constitution, so that’s the way it is. I’d repeal the 16th and 17th Amendments if it was up to me. It’s not.”

“King Stephen I?” Elyse teased.

“God help the country if that ever happened!” I chuckled.

“Before I forget, Matthew has a pediatric appointment on Tuesday. I thought you might want to come along. I know you don’t get to go with Jesse.”

“Is there something specific that you’re concerned about?”

“No, but I thought you might have questions or want to talk to the doctor.”

“I talk to a doctor every day,” I chuckled. “If you want me to come with you, I’d love to. But I don’t have any questions at this point.”

“I would like you to come along. It’s at 10:00am in the medical building next to the hospital.”

“OK. If you bring Matthew to work on Tuesday morning we can go straight from there. He can stay in my office if need be. It’s big enough to set up his playpen if you want.”

“It’s too much of a pain to lug that thing down there. He’ll be fine crawling around on the floor in your office. It’s carpeted and clean.”

“He’s doing his best to catch up to Jesse!” I said.

“And Jesse has finally decided it’s good to be a big brother. I watched him help Matthew try to stand up last night.”

“I figured that he’d come around eventually. Before I forget, I need to go call Great Lakes and arrange for the recruits for Thanksgiving. Will you be here?”

“Yes, of course,” Elyse said. “This is home. You may not be my husband, but we’re a family. The real question is whether or not your wife has to work that day.”

“First-year Resident? You can count on it. We’ll probably do dinner at 6:00pm instead of 3:00pm to accommodate her schedule. But she won’t know for sure what her schedule will be for another week or so.”

“How many recruits?”

“Four seemed to work well last year. Once you factor in the extended family, we’re going to have a huge crowd!”

“Jennifer and Josie are joining us?”

“Yes. I suspect that as long as they live here, they will. Christmas is a bit trickier, because they want to celebrate that as a family. I think we’ll all end up doing multiple celebrations. My wives and I, and our kids, will celebrate on Christmas Eve. Then we’ll invite everyone for an extended-family celebration on Christmas Day in the afternoon. That lets everyone have their own morning celebration however they wish.”

“I prefer Christmas morning, so unless your wives object, you, me, Matthew, and our second kid could have a private celebration on Christmas morning.”

“That should be fine,” I said. “I need to call RTC before I take Jesse on his walk.”

“I’ll come with you. I can use the exercise. And Matthew likes going to the park.”

I made the call and got on the list for four recruits for Thanksgiving. Because we’d been cleared the previous year, and I hadn’t had any run-ins with the law that mattered, approval would be automatic. They promised a call the week before Thanksgiving to confirm the details.

“All set!” I said. “Let’s take the boys to the park!”

October 24, 1987, Chicago, Illinois

“Are you here all the time?” I asked Alex when we sat down to breakfast.

“I’m here a lot. Why?”

“I was just curious if you’d like join us for our Guys’ Night. It’s these guys and a few others, just hanging out at my place in Hyde Park, drinking, smoking cigars, playing pool or poker, that kind of thing. Your wife could go out with our wives and girlfriends; they have their Girls’ Night Out the same time.”

“You do that all the time?”

“Every other week,” I said. “We alternate with breakfast here. And next week, it’s Halloween, so we’re combining both - you two can come to the Halloween party. Your wife will fit right in because she’s the same age as most of the other women.”

“Because I robbed the cradle!” he grinned. “I’m sure that Sam would love it! Is it a costume party?”

“Of course!” I replied. “We also have a babysitter available, if you need one.”

“No, no kids yet,” he said. “Sam isn’t ready to take time off work. What time is this shindig?”

“It starts around 7:00pm and I expect it to start winding down around midnight or so, but you never know. On ‘normal’ Guys’ Nights, it ends when the girls come home, usually midnight to 1:00am.”

“I think I could manage the party.”

“Cool. If you give me a piece of paper, I’ll write down the address!”

“Careful, Alex,” Pete said. “You’ll get sucked into Steve’s crazy world!”

“Like you were by Melanie?” Kurt said with a grin.

“I thought at the time it was Melanie’s crazy world, but boy was I wrong about that!” Pete laughed. “She was just gasoline on the fire!”

“Right!” I laughed. “Keep telling yourself that, Pete. Somebody might believe it eventually. Melanie helped make me what I am today!”

“So did Kathy, so Kurt has no room at ALL to talk!” Pete laughed.

“Or me, I guess,” Nick said.

“Don’t look at me!” Jorge laughed. “I’m dating his sister!”

“So, from what I hear, you got the TRULY crazy one in the family!” Jamie laughed.

“She’s crazier than all of you put together, and that’s really saying something!” Jorge laughed. “But that keeps it interesting.”

I looked at Howard who just shrugged slightly. He and Stephanie and gone out occasionally, but I hadn’t heard about them going out recently. Despite my sister continually saying that she didn’t want to get tied down, she seemed to always gravitate back to Jorge. And because Jorge had said something publicly, that told me that it was probably more serious than it had been.

I had noticed that he was more confident, and had opened up a bit more with the guys since Stephie’s funeral. The effect of the funeral on him had been profound, perhaps even more so than its effect on me. Until the moment when he dropped the flower into the grave, I hadn’t realized just how close he’d felt to her.

As we ate, and my friends chatted, I thought about the impact Stephie had on my life, and on the lives of so many others. The same was true of Birgit. And of Don Joseph. In a sense, they lived on in the hearts and minds of the people whose lives they had touched. I had learned something from each of them, and each of them had impacted my life in ways that even I probably didn’t understand. One thing that I did understand was that she would be with me, in my heart, for the rest of my life.

When we finished breakfast, I headed back to Hyde Park for karate class.

“Remember, I need to stop in the office on the way home,” I said to Kara when karate class ended.

Penny had left a message while I was at breakfast saying that she’d run into a problem with one of the modules for the medical software and needed to talk to me about it.

“We’ll see you at home,” Kara said. “Will you be long?”

“I’m not sure; she didn’t go into details. I’ll try to finish as quickly as possible.”

I kissed her and turned the corner to head to the office. I couldn’t say why I needed to hurry home, because that would give away what Kara was going to announce to our housemates. She was between six and eight weeks pregnant, and felt it was OK to let everyone know. With Julia and Joyce pregnant, 1988 was shaping up to be a big year for kids, and there was always a possibility that there could be more given that everyone was more or less in the right age range for kids.

Bethany and Nick were waiting because she had started on her PhD in August, and between her coursework, research, and clinical work, she simply couldn’t take the time off. Pete and Melanie were waiting because Melanie was just getting established, and wanted to get a year of experience under her belt before she got pregnant. On the other hand, there were subtle hints that Cindi and Chris, and Jackie and Jamie were either trying, or soon would be.

Which reminded me of Josh and Mary, the wildcards in my crazy bunch of friends. I hadn’t talked to them much since I’d been to New York. They were both in DC now, and Josh was lecturing at Georgetown and doing some consulting for a ‘Beltway Bandit’ firm on the side. Mary was still working the Soviet Desk at the State Department. At some point, too, Tanya and Dmitry would have children, but given Tanya’s truly conservative nature, there would be no hints given and she’d simply announce her pregnancy when it happened. Then there were Mikael and Katt, and Kristian and Karin, but I’d heard nothing from them yet on pregnancies.

I walked into the building, said ‘hello’ to Tasha, and then went into the office I shared with Penny.

“What’s up?” I asked.

“I’m having trouble with the database. Records just aren’t coming up correctly and I know they were right.”

“I know the topic for the next team lunch,” I chuckled. “I’ll bet you $10.00 that if you look at the database with the debugging program I wrote that you’ll see records that have corrupted multi-value fields. Then you’ll need to figure out whose code broke it. It could be anyone who worked on anything that updates the records. I first saw this kind of problem a couple of years ago and it has happened at least once since.”

“One sec,” Penny said.

I saw her bring up the debugging program and open the database and look at the records. A red ‘E’ next to each of the multi-value fields told the story.

“See, somebody made a mistake in code that updates this record. Now you’ll have to backtrack and find it.”

“Well, that sucks!” she griped. “I didn’t touch anything that updates those fields!”

“I’m pretty sure that Heather, Alonzo, and I all worked on code which touched it. Check the programmers’ notes and comments. The technical docs will have a list of all modules which update those fields.”

“If it was you, you’re going to owe me big time!” Penny said. “I hate cleaning up your messes!”

“And how often does THAT happen, Pretty Penny? Hmm?”

“Rarely,” she admitted. “I can’t wait to graduate so that I can do something other than fix bugs!”

“I hear you,” I said. “But concentrate on your schoolwork. I expect straight A’s.”

“Of course you do,” she sighed. “All I hear is what a fantastic student Steve Adams was. How successful Steve Adams is. And those friends of Tasha’s? I thought only rock stars had groupies!”

I laughed, “So do race car drivers, hockey players, and just about anyone else who can claim a bit of fame. Is it really that bad at IIT?”

She smirked, “No, I was teasing. Well, about the stuff besides the groupies. That’s for real. Except for Doctor Bauer, nobody has mentioned you. I guess when I take Scott’s class I’ll hear more.”

“That makes me feel better, I was starting to get worried about what Doctor Bauer or Scott might be saying. OK. I need to get home. If you don’t find the issue, leave me a note and I’ll look at it on Monday morning.”

“Thanks. I never used that debugger before. It looks cool.”

“It can do lots of stuff, though mostly with the database. Look at the menu options. It can be really handy when things don’t work right.”

Penny gave me a quick kiss, and I walked out of the office.

“Steve,” Tasha called out, “Do you have a minute?”

I walked over to her desk and plopped down in a chair.

“What’s up?”

“I was wondering if you had some time to talk,” she said quietly.

“I’m sure I can make time. What did you want to talk about?”

“You know,” she said blushing.

“Why don’t you come over for lunch tomorrow?” I said.

“Thanks,” she said.

I said goodbye, waved to Penny through the open door to our office, and saw her smirk in return. I headed home and took a quick shower, then made my lunch, and sat down with Kara and Sofia who were just finishing theirs.

“Everything OK?” Kara asked.

“Penny just ran into a problem which she hadn’t seen before. I showed her how to go about finding and fixing it. Tasha asked me if we could talk and I told her to come for lunch tomorrow.”

“I was expecting it eventually,” Kara said. “So was Jess.”

“You two STILL let him play around?” Sofia laughed.

“Excuse me!” I chuckled. “She’s coming to talk. Nothing more.”

“Yes, and I invited you for dinner, and nothing more back in Hovås, right?” she said with a twinkle in her eye.

“Sofia, please don’t talk about what goes on with Steve and other girls,” Kara said.

“Don’t worry. I only said something because it was just the three of us here.”

“Thanks,” Kara said with a smile. “I guess I’ll tell you first, but you have to stay calm.”

“Tell me what?” Sofia asked.

“I’m pregnant!” Kara grinned.

“Oh! That’s fantastic! Congratulations!” Sofia whispered. “When are you due?”

“Around June 1st!”

“That’s awesome! And perfect timing, too!”

“Yes, just when I finish my degree. I guess I’ll miss my commencement.”

“My commencement will be around then, too,” Sofia said. “My parents are flying here from Sweden, so there is no way I can miss mine!”

“Did you get your MCAT results?” Kara asked.

“Yes! I scored in the 95th percentile. What about your GRE?”

Wand Book and Candle Part 3

Wand, Book and Candle, Part 3 By Elliot Reid I hefted the 'phone, punched in the long-distance number and tried to ease back in the chair by my computer. My head, cushioned by a mass of unfamiliar hair, rested against the wall as I tilted back. I was cocooned in the femme pinkness of my bedroom, still glowing from my pool encounter with Tisha. As soon as I had gotten back I'd shucked off the starched school clothes. Having spent the day prancing around in my hot...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 35 An Interview and Some New Friends

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 78 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part II

May 15, 1992, Glencoe, Illinois “Join me in my study, if you would,” Noel Spurgeon said when we finished our dessert. It had been an interesting evening. Samantha and I had talked for a bit before we’d been summoned to dinner. The meal had been prepared by a chef and was served by a white-coated young man. Again, this was a far cry from Lois at the van Hoeks’ house. What wasn’t a far cry was the fact that I was having dinner with a man who knew I was going to be sleeping with his daughter...

Wand Book and Candle Part 5

Wand, Book and Candle, Part 5 By Elliot Reid A scorching plain of fine white mica lay beneath an obsidian sky. Above it hung the Moon, wreathed in flame. Before me hovered a figure I did not recognize, pale and cold. It looked nothing like my father and yet I knew it was him. "Why do feel these things?" I asked the specter. "Why do I want to mutilate my girlfriends?" "The wand asserts itself," the ghost said, its voice dry as a library. "The what?" "The wand. Your old...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 51 Friends and Neighbors Part I

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. Other than me, all of you are white, nominally Christian, 20-year-old Americans. And you don’t invite me to your Sunday...

Andrea Standing part 2 of Andreas Stand

Andrea Standing (part 2 of Andrea's Stand) A note at the beginning. One of the problems with writing a serial story is that the author feels a need to recap what happened in the prior portions. Please go back and read part 1, "Andrew Running". It will make this a better story. Briefly Andrew at 19, abused by his father, runs away to a distant relative, Aunt Clara. Andrew goes along with a joke played by Clara's lover Marnie, and ends up as Andrea working in Marnie's luxury used car...

August, 1984, Chicago, Illinois The rest of the week proceeded as expected - class on Wednesday, as well as the usual visit from Penny, work on Thursday, and class on Friday. Kara and I had lunch together at IIT, Sofia practiced her driving and parking, and I hung out with Mark Agnini after class for beers. Staci and I got into a couple of interesting debates about the Old Testament that Mark had to break up to allow others in the class to participate. She was very much of the ‘directly...

Denied any private time to explore the changes, I busied myself around the house doing chores. Our brownstone was a tiny place and the slightest clutter made it uninhabitable. Island of Hernando Rodriguez

He watched them as they sat sipping their colorful drinks and flirting with male guests and hotel employees alike at the Garden Cloud Lounge. They were undoubtedly four sisters, all in their late twenties and thirties, and attractive. They were obviously American, and they laughed as they tried what little Spanish they knew on the young waiters. He had seen groups like this many times. Their often affluent husbands allowed them to have "Girl's Time Off" now and then. It worked out on both...

There is a shortage of cunt in Aldershot! Well at least of good quality cunt. The place has been a garrison town for hundreds of years and there are only two sorts of females in it. The first are the stuck up sort who wouldn't touch a squaddie with a barge pole and the others, who are not stuck up but poxed up, who you wouldn't want to touch with your barge pole. Andrew Running (part 1 of Andrea's Stand) Chapter 1: Running I called my Aunt Clara from the bus station. She didn't seem that surprised to hear from me and when I explained why I was there she told me to walk a couple of blocks to the local diner and get myself a cup of coffee. She'd pick me up in about half an hour. I sat and sipped chocolate milk and tried to eat a pastry while I glanced nervously out of the window waiting for my father to show up and force me into his...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 67 Thatrsquos What Friends Are For

March 22, 1992, Chicago, Illinois That evening, I was in Abbie’s room as I usually was on Sunday nights. We’d made love and were cuddling, which was also the usual for us these days. Our athletic sex had turned more soft and loving, something that had surprised me at first, but then, as I saw the changes in Abbie, made perfect sense. “I have a request,” she said. “OK.” She explained what she wanted and I sat up and looked at her. “I’m not sure I can do that. It’s not really within the...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 54 Westward Bound Or is it Eastward

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

Candys Dandy

by Millie Dynamite Jaden and I meet a few weeks after he transferred to the Naval base just outside of town. I sat on a bar stool sipping my Pappy Van Winkle when this tall African-American man in full dress uniform sat next to me. He whore captain’s bars. He possessed an air of authority. I nodded to him when perched on the next stool. He returned my nod with his own acknowledgment, in a deep voice he said, “Yo.” He spoke without looking at me. “I’ll have bourbon, make it a shot of Evan...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 2 StephieChapter 32 Friends and Family

December 26, 1987, Chicago, Illinois The Twin Beech swooped down through overcast skies to touch down on the runway at Meigs Field early on Saturday morning. It rolled out, then taxied to the ramp. I saw Aimee in the Pilot-in-Command seat, and her father in the co-pilot’s seat. They shut down the engines, and a moment later, my parents came down the stairs, followed by the Clarkes, and then Aimee and Patrick Shaughnessy. “Merry Christmas!” I called out as they walked over to where I was...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 52 Friends and Neighbors Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I rang the bell at the Nichols’ house, a brick home like mine, but with a very different look, blockier and almost fortress-like. We were quickly ushered in by Alice Nichols and my first impression was ‘old money’, given that the decor was very traditionally American, as opposed to my more ‘Scandinavian Modern’ minimalist tastes. That didn’t mean that it was actually ‘old money’, but it sure felt that way, especially when I saw a series of black and white...

July 22, 1997, London, England “Steve Adams, please meet Philip van der Velt. Philip, my friend Steve Adams.” We shook hands. “Jiang, this is my friend Sari Onbekend.” “«Je bent Nederlands»?” Philip said to Sari. (“You’re Dutch?”) “«Ja, maar onze vrienden spreken geen Nederlands»!” (Yes, but our friends don’t speak Dutch!) “«Ik spreek een beetje»,” I said. (“I speak a little.”) “How about we all speak Cantonese?” Jiang said with a smile. “Sorry,” I replied. “Sorry,” Philip added....

Wand Book and Candle Part 4

Wand, Book and Candle, Part 4 By Elliot Reid The transformation slowed, the final change trickling into place. I cocked my head at the caramel woman in the mirror and smiled a dazzling, Colgate smile. My new face and figure was perfect in every detail, a Xerox copy of the original. I was the spitting image of my new crush, Tisha Williams. I stared at my coffee-colored hands with their light fingernails, noting the fine knuckle wrinkles. I then lifted my fingers to pat the...

Strange RelationshipsChapter 10 Armand Mixes in the Hernandezs Affairs

Armand Wilson sat in his home office/study sighing. From the office, things had looked pretty good; business was on track, and Sharon appeared to be handling her new situation well. But in the car on the way home, Armand began getting bad vibes, and when he arrived at his mansion, things were even worse. Everyone on staff was walking around as if on eggshells. It took Armand about twenty minutes' worth of snooping, but the situation resolved itself -- the Hernandez' quarters were an armed...

CANDY FINDS HER SON HANDY AND DANDY

by Oediplex 8==3~ The sweetest mom discovers her boy is both convenient and delightful. [She also recounts when her dad fucked her at nineteen!] Like the name of Madame DeVille's moniker, Cruella, some names fit the personality they are bestowed upon. Disney came up with that evil woman's apropos handle. My mother's folks named their only child, a daughter, Candy. This was shortly before the infamous 1968 movie was out. Though there were aspects of mom that paralleled the...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

A WellLived Life Book 10 The WifeChapter 65 A Little Help From My Friends

August, 1985, Chicago, Illinois Bethany and Kathy finally came back to the house around 3:30pm. Kathy looked at me and her eyes told me that we needed to talk. I nodded my agreement and wondered how I could pull off the conversation without Bethany noticing. That problem solved itself when Bethany announced about 4:30pm that she was going out with Andrew and wouldn’t join us for dinner. After Bethany left, I asked Kathy to help me prepare dinner and she agreed. “So?” I asked as I got the...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 34 Friendship Needs No Words

June, 1983, Göteborg, Sweden The SAS DC-9 from Heathrow rolled out on the runway at Landvetter, bringing me back to Sweden for the second year in a row, and the third time overall. When the plane had taxied to the ramp and parked, the doors were opened and I grabbed my carry-on bag and headed off the plane and into the terminal. I found the baggage claim and after a short wait, collected my bags. I switched my brain into ‘Swedish’ mode and prepared to speak little or no English for several...

Second Time Through Book IChapter 10 Mandy Candy

Julie was still sitting on the bed with me when we heard the commotion in the hall. Then the door to my room banged open and in tumbled a giggling mass of blond. "Holy Shit! This whole family is blond!" I thought. Since I knew Nicky and Jennifer, and the other three were very similar in appearance, allowing for the slight age difference, I assumed the others were my cousins. The two youngest ones were fourteen year old twin daughters of Sarah's twin sister, Debbie. And the third was...

Sword Saint Book Two IncompleteChapter 15 Chandra away

We woke, it wasn’t quite dawn yet with the sun under the horizon gently lighting the morning sky. I wiggled out from under Celia’s grip and slipped out of the bed following Chandra as she exited the small water closet. We dressed, quietly washed and left the room without disturbing the still sleeping strawberry blond. Breakfast was a subdued affair, she was too nervous to contribute anything meaningful. “You will be fine, just believe in yourself.” *Mumble. “You’ll be fine, trust me.” I...

August 4, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “Boss, Penny just called!” Terry grinned from my doorway on Tuesday morning. “And you’re standing there, why?” I chuckled. “Call when Amber has a little brother or sister!” “I will!” he grinned. I picked up the phone and dialed Kimmy’s desk to let her know so she could arrange for flowers, and also record Terry out on ‘«pappaledighet»’. I finally heard from him about 8:30pm that Amber had a baby brother, Andrew, who they would call Andy. I called Kimmy...

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

A Shy Guys Notebook Part Two Following the Books Commands

James sat upright on his bed, with his legs crossed and hishands holding his head up. He just stared at the small, red notebook that lay in front of him, this mysterious gift that was granted to him. His own name was engraved on the front. It was almost like it was glowing, beckoning him to open it, to control reality even more. His mind was racing, full of thoughts of Amy, Kirsty and the words written inside the book: ‘Kirsty is going to change her mind and ask me to come over to work on the...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 38 Jennifer

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

Andee Poses For A Friend

It had been a long time in coming. Andee wasn’t sure if having to “pay up” for losing a friendly bet with her co-worker was just a passing joke in the hallway, or if he was serious about collecting on it. As a thirty-eight year old mom of two very active boys and career woman, she enjoyed a bit of adventure in her life and this was the second time in a year she had found herself confronted with a sexual complication with her friend. Without question, Andee had been a shameless flirt with Paul,...

December 21, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “No shit, Doc!” I exclaimed. “Why the fuck do you think I’ve spent the last twenty-three years in one form of therapy or another? Will you stop treating me like a typical patient and acknowledge and respect that not only do I know myself, but I am NOT like anyone else you have ever met? I don’t fit into any of your cookie-cutter diagnoses nor can you put me in some little box on a chart and say that’s where I belong.” “Is that what you...

From Candace to CandyChapter 7

Well, now it's time for school. Candace and I go to a small high school, not private, but because we are so rich, it is not exactly public either. The students have been screened by my fathers' security teams; they are all exceptionally bright, well mannered, not prone to causing trouble, and to add ice cream to the pie, all are very good looking. There are 40 students, 20 boys and 20 girls. When the school was larger it had state champion quality teams in boys basketball, girls volleyball...

March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. July 3, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan It was raining hard when I woke up on Sunday morning, which meant I wasn’t going to be able to run, and would likely have the afternoon free as had happened one other day. Sakurako came to the cottage to ensure I was awake, even though I’d been waking up automatically at sunrise for the past week. A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...
