“By the way, what was the flooding like three years ago?” I asked Evans.

“A lot of rain. The upstream tributaries in the Range really got hit. And that meant there was really a lot of water in the Clarence. They talked about the Great Flood – well, we nearly beat the record. But our house is over eight metres above high water, so we weren’t in danger.”

At nearby Lilydale, the Clarence River peaked at 20.94 metres at midnight on Monday, 28 January 2013. That was close to the 1954 flood peak of 21 metres.

“They evacuated around seven thousand in Grafton and issued a warning for some streets here in South Grafton. But we were OK. They set up an evacuation centre in South Grafton High School.” [Streets that the warning applied to in South Grafton included Bent, Ryan, Cowan, Abbot, Spring, Through, Skinner, Wharf, Armidale, Beetson, Bligh, Edward, James, Kelly, Kennedy, New, Orr, and Vere.]

“No fun.”

“No, but I was once in a tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean when I was a Sub Lieutenant on a cruiser. We had sustained winds of over 100 knots. I didn’t have a dry five minutes in 36 hours! That really wasn’t any fun.”

“You don’t talk about that period much.”

“No. Nor do you talk about pre-Perth, either.”

“True.” We fell silent.

“Here we are! Let’s get your dunnage into the house.”

We made quick work of it. I suggested we try using the diesel in my emergency store, and Evans said we could try it in Rainbow. The Beechcraft didn’t burn diesel.

Willy said that Scott had called. He was going on a cruise around the Bass Strait and then would finish his eleven weeks. With luck, he’d get home for Christmas and have to report in the New Year. She disappeared.

“I wonder where they’ll send him,” Evans mused.

“Has he any specialization?”

“No. But he did politics and history. They might make him a naval attache somewhere. Singapore or Colombo might be possible.”

“Colombo?”

“They’ve been working on better relations with Sri Lanka. But ... they might well send him to Garden Island, that’s hq in Western Australia or to Sydney.”

“Sydney,” echoed him again.

“It’s fleet base east. But there’s no sense in guessing. Some clerk might decide that as both his mum and dad can fly, he should go to the Naval Air Station in Nowra. Or up to Cairns. You never know what the clerks will do.”

“Start the coals, Captain!” came Willy’s voice.

“Yessir. Immediately, sir!” Evens snapped a salute in the direction of the voice.

We grilled beef in the rear yard and ate it at a picnic table. There were fewer insects than I would have expected, but Willy said there were two important factors: we weren’t near the Clarence and the many flowers and trees in bloom there were highly attractive to “those bugs.” I was going to explain that mosquitoes and gnats and flies weren’t bugs, but that cicadas, aphids, planthoppers, leafhoppers, and other hemiptera were. I held my tongue.

But I did ask about NSW fishing day.

“It was hell last year,” Evans said.

“OK, then,” I said, “How about we go upstream on Rainbow tomorrow and go for a ride in Willy’s flying chariot on Sunday?”

“Brilliant,” she said. “That’s why you’re the Director and we’re old retired folks.”

I snorted. “Moreover, I need a new permit. Mine expired. Can we stop somewhere in the morning and I’ll invest another few dollars?”

“BCF. It’s barely a detour. And they open at 8:30.”

We each had a bottle of Thunder Road pale ale. It was delicious. “Wait til tomorrow,” said Evans. “Thunder Road bought the old Grafton Brewery and began brewing Grafton Bitter again about two years ago. It’s the best.”

“But... ?” I asked.

“But it doesn’t come in bottles nor tins. Only in kegs. And only locally. We’ll stop at one of the hotels in town tomorrow. But now let’s log you in so we can see your fish.”

It took only a few minutes for me to get into my account, but there were hundreds of unread mails. I looked for last Wednesday, and there were but four. Only one was obviously a.jpg, so I opened it. I hadn’t realized how dumbfounded I looked with a large fish dangling from my hand.

“Wow!” said Evans, “That really looks nice. Congratulations. Now, push that button.”

I moved the mouse, pushed “print,” heard a whir and Evans had a copy. I did it again and then exited the mail program.

“May I keep one of them?”

“Certainly.”

“What time do you get up?”

Willy laughed.

“Is that funny?”

“We’re retired. The children are gone. We get up whenever we want to.”

“If we’re going fishing,” remarked Evans, “we ought to be up by 7:30 and breakfasted and out an hour later. BCF at 8:30 and we can be on the water by nine or so.”

“Yessir! Cap’n, Sir!” Willy responded. And we went off to bed.

In the morning I spent $14 for a one-month fishing permit (as it was $7 for three days, this would cover the possibility of fishing again). Both Evans and Willy had long-term permits: three years for $85. Quite a bargain for the “recreational fishermen.” That meant we couldn’t resell the catch.

Willy had cut a hamper of sandwiches and we had a thermos of coffee and and igloo of bottled water.

We loaded up and cast off. The Volvo engines caught and roared immediately and settled to a grumble. “We’ll go upstream aways before we drop a line,” Evans said. “The Clarence is quite long, making innumerable twists and bends. I know there are over 100 islands, but many of them move with every flood. There’s a notable gorge and several falls upstream. The bass fishing is best upstream of the gorge, but the bass and the eastern cod are good down here, too. The cod get thrown back, they’re endangered.”

I nodded, but I was admiring the riverbanks.

A short distance upstream from Grafton ... the Clarence River has a wide, pebble-strewn bed with small islets supporting Casuarina trees in the middle of the channel. The banks of the channel are steep, but also stepped, giving the impression of a series of terraces. [I. Douglas, “Fluvial Landforms,” in D.N. Jeans, ed., Australia: A Geography, 1978

After about two kilometres, the river made a 90-degree bend to starboard, then two kilometres later, another 90-degrees to port. We then made two more turns to port and then three broad U-shaped turns where there were sandy islets to port and then to starboard.

“There are a few rapids coming. We’re coming to where the Orara flows in from the south and west,” Evans said. “There’s a large sandy flat just beyond and then several shoals. When the water’s lower in the summer the rocks can be quite dangerous, so I’ll keep to starboard.”

The shoals were quite obvious, as the water was clear where it wasn’t foaming. It seemed to me that Willy was keeping watch lest we hit a rock or ground on a shoal. But she didn’t say anything.

We swerved again. “Coming to Eaton Creek to starboard,” Evans said. “After that we can think about dropping a line and troll as we go somewhat further upstream.” There were a number of utes with trailers and small boats on the sand. A few blokes waved and I waved back.

“We’re making good time. Lilydale’s over there to port. By road it’s close to 50 kilometres to Grafton, but it’s less than that on the river and about half of that as the Beechcraft flies.” He raised his voice. “Want to get out some trolling tackle, Willy?”

Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 8 Nockatunga Waterhole Cunnamulla

Before noon the next day, Cook told me there would be visitors today. About an hour later, there was a good deal of noise and two ATVs popped over the bank of the waterhole and “parked” near the humpies. There was a crowd around them in a moment, so I hung back. Then one of the riders called out “Mornin’, Gordy!” and I realized these were two of the hands from Epsilon Station. “G’day. I thought you told me it was a three-day-walk!” “It is ... if you walk. Graham let us borrow ATVs from time...

Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 12 Hastings River

The Hastings River starts high on the Great Dividing Range running east down through the picturesque Hastings Valley, through unique river towns such as Mount Seaview, Ellenborough and Wauchope before entering the Pacific Ocean at Port Macquarie. Fishing is popular particularly from October through to June each year with peaks during Christmas and Easter. The river has a wide range of fishing opportunities from freshwater bass and catfish in the upper reaches to estuarine species such as...

Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 13 Leaving Port Macquarie

I felt much better as I walked back to Settlers Inn. Much better. I though of just where I was. Northern coast of New South Wales. I had old friends nearby. Well, only a few hours away. I got my phone book and sat down. There they were: Evans. South Grafton. And a phone number. I tried to call. Busy! What nerve! I’d shower, dress and try again before going out for a drink. But first I looked at the directory beside the phone in my room. There was a LandRover dealer here in Port Macquarie! My...

Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 18 Grafton to Moree

After dinner I called Patrick and spoke to Rachel about invading her parents. With her encouragement, I called Chaz in Canberra. He was quite enthusiastic about a visit and wanted to know when I’d arrive. “It’s Monday. I won’t leave before Wednesday. I thought I’d cross the Dividing Range, look at the MacIntyre in Inverell and stop in Moree. Then through Narrabin to Dubbo and from there to Canberra. But I want to stop in Cowra. I was there when I was a grad student, but the woman I was with...

I walked to the front door and knocked. Michiko opened the door – petit, wearing a blouse and dark slacks, smiling. “You’re here!” “Obviously.” “Welcome to our home.” I gave her a hug. “You seem well.” “I’m OK. It’s been difficult. But the past week or so have seen improvement.” “Charles will be home in about an hour. Perhaps less, as it’s Friday and as he knew you would be arriving. Let me show you to your room.” “Should I get my stuff?” “No. Charles will want to help. It will make...

I registered, thanked Cook and went for a walk across the bridge to the more fashionable side of Batemans Bay. I was relatively unimpressed. The cafes and windows looked like those near the Opera House, but Cook had been right: there were certainly more seniors than I’d have expected. I was too young to be retired. Or at least I thought so. I thought of having a drink prior to walking back, but picked the wrong venue. I wearing neither jacket nor tie. I shrugged to myself and walked back to...

Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 25 In Sydney

Dinner with Winnie was a pleasure. We chatted about my wanderings and about the whole notion of loss and search; it was serious, but constructive. “I understand,” Winnie said. “I may not have been devastated when I became a widow. But it was sudden and unexpected. And it changed my life.” “Ten years ago.” “Over a dozen. Time flies.” “‘Tempus edax rerum‘ is what Ovid wrote in Metamorphoses [xv: 234]. ‘Time destroys all.’ Did you ever see Golding’s translation?” “What?” “Arthur Golding. A...

Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 2

The paddleboat ride along the Darling was interesting, but noisy. I wondered whether folks brought unruly children in the hope that they’d fall in, but this was too far upstream to think they’d be eaten by a giant cod, like Ken in “Love Serenade.” But that took place far downstream, along the Murray. And it was just an idle fantasy. (The Murray Cod, which can grow to about two metres, is not really a cod in a Northern Hemisphere sense, but a giant freshwater perch.) But it was interesting to...

I topped off my diesel before leaving the hotel. I didn’t want to be stranded short of Cameron Corner. [Before I go further, I ought to remark that there are five places where there are surveyed right-angle state border intersections. Cameron Corner, surveyed by John Cameron (NSW) and George Watson (Queensland) in 1879, where the east-west border hits South Australia; Haddon Corner, where South Australia ends in the Channel Country; Poeppel Corner, where South Australia, Queensland and the...

The next day I had breakfast at 6 with several hands and then read in the morning sun for a few hours. Then, in mid-morning, I asked the “girl” about laundry. “You gibbit me, I do good job.” “That’s not necessary. I can do it.” “Not job for nungungi.” “I’m not nungungi.” “Nungungi dad’s nungungi.” I had clearly lost the argument. I appealed to my hostess. “Not a chance,” she said. “Better give in graciously.” So I did. Underwear, shirts, pants, socks. It was a decent-sized...

I called Patrick after dinner. After telling him about my trip, I told him that I’d visited CACH and met Wilgar. “I’ve heard of him. He’s an elder.” “So he said.” “You’re aware of the CACH’s role?” “No, but you’re going to tell me.” “OK. Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 10 Narrabri and Armidale

I made good time in the morning, but Narrabri was nothing like what I recalled. Thirty years had totally altered the town. There were many new buildings and there was an atmosphere that I didn’t recall sensing. When I registered at the Crossroads Hotel, I realized that the park, the CSIRO and the agricultural wealth had totally altered the ambience of what had been a small town. A pamphlet proclaimed Narrabi “the second richest agricultural shire in Australia.” A glance at the women drinking...

I took my time in the morning, as I intended to stop at Apsley Falls, and that meant waiting till the sun was over the mountains. It took just about an hour to get to the turnoff, a bit east of Walcha. Apsley Falls are the first falls in a succession of dramatic drops in an area that has some of the most remarkable scenery in Eastern Australia. The first drop of the falls is about 65 metres in depth, and the second, which is about 800 metres further on, plummets 58 metres metres to the...

The next morning we were up and breakfasting well before eight. “It’ll take us two hours to get near the islands and the sugar cane farms,” Evans explained. “There are a few areas I like to fish, about five kilometres up from the mouth. You can look at a chart when we’re on board Rainbow. It looks like a decent day for bream or flathead. We’ll keep some for dinner and release the others.” I’d phoned Patrick when we got back to South Grafton. He’d be happy to help Olwen in any way he could....

I pulled my list from my pocket. “While I was with your parents [nodding to Rachel], I tried to put together a list. But it wasn’t very long. Everything went smoother than I had expected. The closing was painless as the total came to less than Allianz had paid out. It turned out that Rachel had an acquaintance who worked at a “vintage clothing” shop in a mall on Castlereagh. Rachel escorted a “buyer” to Pennant Hills, where she combed through the closets and drawers and emerged with an SUV-full of clothing, coats, bags and footwear and gave Rachel a sizeable cheque. She expressed interest in the jewelry, but that (Rachel reported)...

Gordys ProblemChapter 2

I called Sue after dinner but got her answerphone. I left a message asking her to phone me at home till ten or at the office in the morning. Weena put Sarah down — for most of the night, I hoped — and I sat with Patrick. He was trying to explain why the emu couldn't fly though her sister, the turkey, could. I knew the story but let him struggle with it. "And that's why the turkey has only two chicks," he concluded. "Do you understand that?" "No. Not all of it." "It's a try at...

I sat in the car for a few minutes. I really didn't want to go back to the office. I thought about the two books by Mountford with paintings by Roberts. Perhaps I could get them for Patrick. I looked up the number of Muir in Nedlands and called. No, they had neither. They suggested Serendipity. I called them to no avail, though the clerk there suggested Bonnie Doon and supplied the number. I spoke to a cheery woman there who said they had two of the three books. Unfortunately, one was First...

After chops, salad and chips, Rachel and Patrick performed their playlet. Rachel narrated. She explained that she was the dry wind and that nothing grew when it was too dry. Patrick was the wet wind and his rain made everything grow. They bowed and we applauded. "You're right," Chaz said when they went off for some milk. "About what?" "The stories. The myth and the play are about women being barren until the fertilizing water comes." "Yes. That had to be explained. That's what...

Gordys ProblemChapter 6

Did I mention that Patrick was in school half-days? Mornings. The same school as Rachel, who was a year ahead of him. After dinner, when both kids were asleep and Weena and I each had a glass of wine, I found out about Patrick's problem. Apparently, he had been fighting in the school yard. Actually, he had knocked down an eight-year-old and was sitting on his chest when a teacher 'removed' him. "Is there more to the story?" Weena had a gleam in her eye. "Is there? Is there! It seems...

Sunday morning around 10:30 Sue called to ask whether I'd seen the news of "the shake-up." I hadn't and she told me to read the reports on the Internet and then call her back. Gordys ProblemChapter 10

Patrick may have spent most of Sunday reading The Jungle Book but I was quite involved at several points. I had to show him — teach him? -- how to use the reference books we had acquired. First, there was the atlas. Right at the beginning, Patrick wanted to locate the Seeconee Hills. I showed him the map of India and explained that place names change over time and that Kipling wasn't naming a precise location. But then Mowgli's jungle was in Central India, about halfway between Kolkata,...

I had two reasons for going to Dymock's: I wanted to get Kathy Lette's most recent book and I wanted to see what was available about Australia where Patrick was concerned. I spoke with Mum on Monday. She was still a bit feverish, but was clearly on the mend. She told me she had been stupid to go out in the garden in low shoes. I told her about Maddy's husband's fatal error. I got home from SciTech relatively early on Tuesday to face another Patrick problem. He had been given a soft-covered book of rhymes in class. Saturday afternoon and evening passed peacefully. Mum was in a semi-frenzy on Sunday, as both her boys would be there. Sodom Eyes Part 2 Trucker Trade Off

That big, black cock hit my tonsils, as it sought the entrance to my gullet. My eyes grew big as saucers as I took six, seven, eight inches into my mouth and still was looking at least three more extending from my lips. The man paused, letting my throat get used to the girth, as tears welled up in my eyes. I grabbed his butt cheeks with both hands and pulled him closer, I figured if I was going to choke to death, it might as well be worth it. My nose was buried in his stiff and wiry pubes, my...

Jokes and GigglesChapter 841

This one is compliments of Charm B I swear this one is true. There was a discussion at a military officers training college in the 1970s on the topic “The Irish Question” and the subtext read “How do we stop the fighting between the Catholic Irish Republicans and the Protestant Ulster Unionists?” One essay submitted read “Get the UN to put in a peace-keeping force of either the French Foreign Legion or the Canadian Royal 22nd (the Van Doos). The natives will gang up on them to protect their...

Aint Talkin Bout Love

When I think back now on where my life went off the rails, I'm sure it was the concert. We should never have gone. Before the concert, our lives, our marriage, and our relationship were normal. However, that's all gone now. I met Valerie back in college. She was a bit on the short side, with olive skin and the longest prettiest black hair you've ever seen. That hair was alive. There were streaks of brown, red and even a few errant strands of blond in it that catch the light from time to...

Some Good Deeds

The banging at the door didn't surprise Mama Selma, even though the hour was late. She was no stranger to unexpected visitors, and she didn't sleep much these days, regardless. She calmly put her book down and grabbed the candle before rising from her chair. The sound continued as she walked, the intensity of the thumps growing with each knock. This didn't bother Mama Selma either. Folks that came to her door were rarely on social calls. More likely a husband had become particularly...

The Drama ClubChapter 8

The week went quickly. For Nancy, Tommy, Hugh and Lance kept her jumping. For Lilian, Hugh, Lance and her old friend Billy kept her humping. The sex was fine but Nancy had not forgotten Mr. Chan. Her continued search of the book cases in Hugh’s room netted her some more documents. It included a list of the women sent overseas and in most cases a photo was attached. Also an interesting book containing the accounts of the Chan Trading Company. Her family line had gotten him top dollar from the...

The Benefits of FriendsChapter 37 Surviving Christmas

The dawning of Christmas morning found the two of us tangled with each other as sleep gradually left us. She was laying partly on top of me, her hair splayed across my chest, and I could feel a little wet spot where she had likely drooled in her sleep again. I was debating about the best and most fun-filled way to wake her when she gave a little start and rolled around a bit, then lifted her head. Her eyes found mine, and she smiled, then stretched her neck a little to reach my lips. "Merry...

Impregnating Sara Part 13

Laura walked over to Sarah, carrying a thick robe and hand towel. She offered her hand to Sarah who took it and rose to her feet. She took the robe and slipped it over her shoulders covering her naked body. Pulling the robe around her, she loosely tied the belt around her waist. Once the robe was secure, she used the towel to wipe small dabs of semen from her lips and chin. “Sárkány? ... Sárkány? ... Hey Sárkány wake up!” Sárkány was asleep as Daiyu was smacking his back. She felt the scales on his back as her palm was hitting against it. The dragon’s eyes stirred open. “Smoky girl!” he yelled as he shot awake. Everyone was looking at the dragon as he saw everyone looking at him. They were giving him a questioning look. “Right,” he said. “Are we on another quest?!” “Yes ... Sárkány, we need your help to stop a gunman in Europe. A rogue mythic.” “Of...

Meagans Breathing LessonsChapter 5

Debbie was at a loss for ideas that might help Peter resist Meagan when she played with her pussy in front of him. The obvious solution had been to forbid Meagan from doing that, but if Peter needed to see Meagan playing with herself to achieve new records in his own ability to cum, that solution lost much of its appeal. Even with Peter’s near superhuman willpower when it came to controlling his cock, he just couldn’t seem to resist Meagan when he watched her masturbate. On top of all that,...

Of course, I had the option of staying within the family practice but that wouldn't have been a challenge. By the age of thirty-two, I’d become known as one of the best barristers in England — an...

CulDeSac A Story in Around Ch 08

‘Who knows?’ Eric asked her. ‘Just you and me,’ she said into the phone. There was no way she could have done this in person, over the phone was much easier. ‘You haven’t told Bill yet?’ ‘No, not yet. Soon.’ ‘Soon enough he’ll notice,’ Eric commented. Yvoine let out a short, sharp yelp of laughter. ‘Bill doesn’t notice anything,’ she commented angrily. ‘I come home with whip marks all over my body, he doesn’t see anything. Each time I get a new piercing I have to point it out to him...
