Before noon the next day, Cook told me there would be visitors today. About an hour later, there was a good deal of noise and two ATVs popped over the bank of the waterhole and “parked” near the humpies. There was a crowd around them in a moment, so I hung back. Then one of the riders called out “Mornin’, Gordy!” and I realized these were two of the hands from Epsilon Station.

“G’day. I thought you told me it was a three-day-walk!”

“It is ... if you walk. Graham let us borrow ATVs from time to time.”

“How long does it take?”

“Five hours if you drive right; three hours if you have fun.”

“You two have fun?”

“You bet! But we careful. Take nearly four hours ‘cause of trailers. Bring flour an’ sugar an’ peaches.”

“Peaches?”

“Big cans. Sweet juice.”

Aha! Canned peaches in syrup. “Sheilas make peach cake?”

“Sometimes. How long you stay here?”

“I was thinking of leaving tomorrow.”

“Where you go nex’?”

“Quilpie. I want to see the opal mines.”

“We here for two nights, then go back. Gas in cans.”

“Right. Good to see you again.”

“You now nungungi two-shot hunter!” He laughed.

“New name?”

“Yep. You ‘two-shot’.”

Another reputation. I wondered how far it would reach.

The last of the ‘roo went that night, as well as some fresh-caught fish, thanks to the women and children. I think they were some type of catfish. I told Joshua that I would be leaving in the morning and asked whether I could do anything for the band.

“Find ‘nother ‘roo,” he suggested.

I looked about for Cook and located him.

“I’m leaving tomorrow,” I said. “Want to try for another ‘roo?”

“Sure. This good time.”

We walked to my Rover and I got my pistol and a magazine. We retraced the route we’d taken a few evenings before.

“Got a knife?” I asked.

“Yep. Hush now.” We were with 10 metres of where the other one had been shot. Cook pointed. I aimed and heard the kangaroo bound away.

“Hear you cock pistol,” Cook said.

“I guess so. Will we find another?”

“Sure. Too stupid to be spooked.”

Sure enough, within five minutes there was a large male foraging in the same place. I still had my pistol in hand, took aim as he raised his head, and fired. I think I hit him in the neck, just below the jaw line. He just fell to one side.

“Only one shot this time,” Cook said. He walked over, slit the throat so that it would bleed out and sat back. “Shoulda brought Meena.”

“If you weren’t noisier than a flock of galahs, you’d have heard me follow you.” She was right behind me.

“Will you take care of him?”

“Of course.”

“It is my parting gift to Joshua. I leave tomorrow.”

“You have been good to us.”

“I try.”

“Too few do.”

I realized that Meena was a cut above many of the women. “Where did you go to school?”

“Charleville School of Distance Education. Useta be part of the Flying Doctor Service. They decided I didn’t need more after grade 8.”

“I understand.”

She had been working on the evisceration as we talked. “OK. Cook, you carry.”

And we made our way back to the fire side.

In the morning I thanked Joshua for his hospitality. He thanked me for the “gift of meat.” I said good-bye to Alf and Cook, but Meena and the hands weren’t visible. I then got underway for Eromanga.

If you look at a map of Australia, Eromanga is in a singular situation. It is the furthest town from the ocean – any ocean. It also produces millions of litres of petroleum each year and it’s the site of recent dinosaur excavations. The town itself has only a few dozen people in it. There was once a hotel in Eromanga, but it’s now a museum. There’s also a new dinosaur museum, honouring the titanosaur, “Cooper.” Museums were too much like work.

It took me about three hours to get to Eromanga. I stopped at the park to view the opal-studded picnic tables, topped off my diesel from one of my tins, and went on to Quilpie, just over an hour away. I’d been to Quilpie Airfield decades ago, when Willie bought her Mooney, but I’d never stopped in the town. I wondered how the Evanses were, where they were.

In Quilpie, I stopped at the Imperial and got a single for the night and had a late lunch in the bar. Then I walked down Brolga Street to look at the three opal shops. Yes, I know I was in the opal country before I left NSW, but Australia supplies over 90% of the world’s commercial grade opal. And most of it comes from three areas: White Cliffs and Lightning Ridge in New South Wales and this area in south-west Queensland. (There’s even a Quilpie Opals shop in Perth.) Most of the opal from Queensland is “boulder opal,” with a layer of ironstone. It’s less valuable than the black opals from Cooper Pedy and Lightning Ridge.

Gordy and Patrick

Gordy "Good morning," I began, "Welcome to Arthropodology. I'm Gordon Hollister. I assume that you've all had a course or two in biology. For the next few weeks I'm going to talk about a few sorts of invertebrates called arthropods: animals with jointed limbs but no spines. More specifically, we'll consider the arachnids or chelicerates, the crustaceans or biramous arthropods, and the insects or uniramous arthropods. There are over 100,000 named species of arachnids: spiders,...

Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 23 Renewal in Sydney

I registered, thanked Cook and went for a walk across the bridge to the more fashionable side of Batemans Bay. I walked back to the hotel, went to my room and took a long shower. I got dressed and went down for lunch on the terrace. I had a salad and a beer and went back to my room. I must have slept as it was 15:00 only a minute or two later. I washed my face and went back to the terrace. I took volume II of Sturt’s Narrative with me. I was well into 1846 when a voice asked “How was the...

Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 12 Hastings River

The Hastings River starts high on the Great Dividing Range running east down through the picturesque Hastings Valley, through unique river towns such as Mount Seaview, Ellenborough and Wauchope before entering the Pacific Ocean at Port Macquarie. Fishing is popular particularly from October through to June each year with peaks during Christmas and Easter. The river has a wide range of fishing opportunities from freshwater bass and catfish in the upper reaches to estuarine species such as...

Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 13 Leaving Port Macquarie

I felt much better as I walked back to Settlers Inn. Much better. I though of just where I was. Northern coast of New South Wales. I had old friends nearby. Well, only a few hours away. I got my phone book and sat down. There they were: Evans. South Grafton. And a phone number. I tried to call. Busy! What nerve! I’d shower, dress and try again before going out for a drink. But first I looked at the directory beside the phone in my room. There was a LandRover dealer here in Port Macquarie! My...

Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 18 Grafton to Moree

After dinner I called Patrick and spoke to Rachel about invading her parents. With her encouragement, I called Chaz in Canberra. He was quite enthusiastic about a visit and wanted to know when I’d arrive. “It’s Monday. I won’t leave before Wednesday. I thought I’d cross the Dividing Range, look at the MacIntyre in Inverell and stop in Moree. Then through Narrabin to Dubbo and from there to Canberra. But I want to stop in Cowra. I was there when I was a grad student, but the woman I was with...

I walked to the front door and knocked. Michiko opened the door – petit, wearing a blouse and dark slacks, smiling. “You’re here!” “Obviously.” “Welcome to our home.” I gave her a hug. “You seem well.” “I’m OK. It’s been difficult. But the past week or so have seen improvement.” “Charles will be home in about an hour. Perhaps less, as it’s Friday and as he knew you would be arriving. Let me show you to your room.” “Should I get my stuff?” “No. Charles will want to help. It will make...

Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 22 Kiama

I registered, thanked Cook and went for a walk across the bridge to the more fashionable side of Batemans Bay. I was relatively unimpressed. The cafes and windows looked like those near the Opera House, but Cook had been right: there were certainly more seniors than I’d have expected. I was too young to be retired. Or at least I thought so. I thought of having a drink prior to walking back, but picked the wrong venue. I wearing neither jacket nor tie. I shrugged to myself and walked back to...

Dinner with Winnie was a pleasure. We chatted about my wanderings and about the whole notion of loss and search; it was serious, but constructive. “I understand,” Winnie said. “I may not have been devastated when I became a widow. But it was sudden and unexpected. And it changed my life.” “Ten years ago.” “Over a dozen. Time flies.” “‘Tempus edax rerum‘ is what Ovid wrote in Metamorphoses [xv: 234]. ‘Time destroys all.’ Did you ever see Golding’s translation?” “What?” “Arthur Golding. A...

Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 2

The paddleboat ride along the Darling was interesting, but noisy. I wondered whether folks brought unruly children in the hope that they’d fall in, but this was too far upstream to think they’d be eaten by a giant cod, like Ken in “Love Serenade.” But that took place far downstream, along the Murray. And it was just an idle fantasy. (The Murray Cod, which can grow to about two metres, is not really a cod in a Northern Hemisphere sense, but a giant freshwater perch.) But it was interesting to...

I topped off my diesel before leaving the hotel. I didn’t want to be stranded short of Cameron Corner. [Before I go further, I ought to remark that there are five places where there are surveyed right-angle state border intersections. Cameron Corner, surveyed by John Cameron (NSW) and George Watson (Queensland) in 1879, where the east-west border hits South Australia; Haddon Corner, where South Australia ends in the Channel Country; Poeppel Corner, where South Australia, Queensland and the...

Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 10 Narrabri and Armidale

I made good time in the morning, but Narrabri was nothing like what I recalled. Thirty years had totally altered the town. There were many new buildings and there was an atmosphere that I didn’t recall sensing. When I registered at the Crossroads Hotel, I realized that the park, the CSIRO and the agricultural wealth had totally altered the ambience of what had been a small town. A pamphlet proclaimed Narrabi “the second richest agricultural shire in Australia.” A glance at the women drinking...

I took my time in the morning, as I intended to stop at Apsley Falls, and that meant waiting till the sun was over the mountains. It took just about an hour to get to the turnoff, a bit east of Walcha. Apsley Falls are the first falls in a succession of dramatic drops in an area that has some of the most remarkable scenery in Eastern Australia. The first drop of the falls is about 65 metres in depth, and the second, which is about 800 metres further on, plummets 58 metres metres to the...

Gordy on WalkaboutChapter 15 Grafton II

“By the way, what was the flooding like three years ago?” I asked Evans. “A lot of rain. The upstream tributaries in the Range really got hit. And that meant there was really a lot of water in the Clarence. They talked about the Great Flood – well, we nearly beat the record. But our house is over eight metres above high water, so we weren’t in danger.” At nearby Lilydale, the Clarence River peaked at 20.94 metres at midnight on Monday, 28 January 2013. That was close to the 1954 flood...

The next morning we were up and breakfasting well before eight. “It’ll take us two hours to get near the islands and the sugar cane farms,” Evans explained. “There are a few areas I like to fish, about five kilometres up from the mouth. You can look at a chart when we’re on board Rainbow. It looks like a decent day for bream or flathead. We’ll keep some for dinner and release the others.” I’d phoned Patrick when we got back to South Grafton. He’d be happy to help Olwen in any way he could....

I pulled my list from my pocket. “While I was with your parents [nodding to Rachel], I tried to put together a list. But it wasn’t very long. Everything went smoother than I had expected. The closing was painless as the total came to less than Allianz had paid out. It turned out that Rachel had an acquaintance who worked at a “vintage clothing” shop in a mall on Castlereagh. Rachel escorted a “buyer” to Pennant Hills, where she combed through the closets and drawers and emerged with an SUV-full of clothing, coats, bags and footwear and gave Rachel a sizeable cheque. She expressed interest in the jewelry, but that (Rachel reported)...

Gordys ProblemChapter 2

I called Sue after dinner but got her answerphone. I left a message asking her to phone me at home till ten or at the office in the morning. Weena put Sarah down — for most of the night, I hoped — and I sat with Patrick. He was trying to explain why the emu couldn't fly though her sister, the turkey, could. I knew the story but let him struggle with it. "And that's why the turkey has only two chicks," he concluded. "Do you understand that?" "No. Not all of it." "It's a try at...

I sat in the car for a few minutes. I really didn't want to go back to the office. I thought about the two books by Mountford with paintings by Roberts. Perhaps I could get them for Patrick. I looked up the number of Muir in Nedlands and called. No, they had neither. They suggested Serendipity. I called them to no avail, though the clerk there suggested Bonnie Doon and supplied the number. I spoke to a cheery woman there who said they had two of the three books. Unfortunately, one was First...

Patrick was the wet wind and his rain made everything grow. They bowed and we applauded. "You're right," Chaz said when they went off for some milk. "About what?" "The stories. Did I mention that Patrick was in school half-days? Mornings. The same school as Rachel, who was a year ahead of him. After dinner, when both kids were asleep and Weena and I each had a glass of wine, I found out about Patrick's problem. Apparently, he had been fighting in the school yard. Actually, he had knocked down an eight-year-old and was sitting on his chest when a teacher 'removed' him. "Is there more to the story?" Weena had a gleam in her eye. "Is there? Is there! It seems...

Sunday morning around 10:30 Sue called to ask whether I'd seen the news of "the shake-up." I hadn't and she told me to read the reports on the Internet and then call her back. I tried to phone Sue, but got voicemail. I phoned my Mum, but was far more interested in her grandchildren than in her younger son. Gordys ProblemChapter 10

Patrick may have spent most of Sunday reading The Jungle Book but I was quite involved at several points. I had to show him — teach him? -- how to use the reference books we had acquired. First, there was the atlas. Right at the beginning, Patrick wanted to locate the Seeconee Hills. I showed him the map of India and explained that place names change over time and that Kipling wasn't naming a precise location. But then Mowgli's jungle was in Central India, about halfway between Kolkata,...

Gordys ProblemChapter 11

I had two reasons for going to Dymock's: I wanted to get Kathy Lette's most recent book and I wanted to see what was available about Australia where Patrick was concerned. What Mum had told Weena was far from silly — and we had to keep him busy on the airplanes. Men: An Owner's Manual was easy to locate. And it wasn't even expensive. I then looked about for the woman who'd been helpful on Saturday, but failed to see her. I wandered towards the section Patrick and I had visited and...

I spoke with Mum on Monday. She was still a bit feverish, but was clearly on the mend. She told me she had been stupid to go out in the garden in low shoes. I told her about Maddy's husband's fatal error. I got home from SciTech relatively early on Tuesday to face another Patrick problem. He had been given a soft-covered book of rhymes in class. They had read "Jack and Jill." He had announced that the verse was "dumb, " adding "only an idiot would look for water uphill." All the...

It was hot in Roma. About 30C [86F], I'd guess. Sarah started fussing almost immediately. Patrick unbuttoned his shirt. Weena took Sarah and the nappy bag and went off to change and re-dress her. I carried the rest of the carry-ons. I luckily snagged a cart at the baggage carousel, which made everything a lot easier. By the time they returned, I had our suitcases and everything else stacked. Saturday afternoon and evening passed peacefully. Mum was in a semi-frenzy on Sunday, as both her boys would be there. Allison woke in the morning with a smile on her face. She stretched and then leaned into her pillow nest, reliving her evening with Bill. He had treated her like a woman, not a mere child. She liked that. She liked the way he had listened to her and talked to her as if she were an equal. Because she was young and small, most of the adults she worked with still treated her as a precocious girl. As she thought about the preceding night, the phone rang. Spontaneous Public Nudity Some Highlights Part 4

Out early one morning, about three-thirty am, I was taking a naked jog, shorts scrunched up in my hand as fall-back. It was a beautiful morning, neither too hot, nor too cold, and I was feeling quite adventurous. So I dared myself to leave the shorts beside a small bush beautifying the streetscape, and take my chances for a while without a plan "B". The street was deserted, but my senses were still on high alert, and after a couple of hundred yards, I approached an intersection lit brightly by...

"Well I am pleased to hear you say that Luna," Dudley said. "From what Harry probably told you It must have seemed that I would be a terrible bully? I have to confess for most of the time he lived with us, it must have seemed like that to him." "No," answered Luna, "Harry did not say much about your family at all. But we all knew he dreaded going home for the summer holidays" "Looking back now," Dudley said, "I am not surprised to hear that. If I had been in his shoes I would...

Fraternization

Fraternization by patricia51 Every child always wants to know how his mother and father met. I tell mine, it all started with a flat tire on a jeep. But maybe that is getting a little ahead of my story. My name is Kelly, born Kelly Wooten. I was the younger of two sisters in a small southern coastal town. When I was a senior in high school I managed the astounding feat of getting married, getting pregnant and getting divorced all within that single school year. Okay, the events didn't occur...

My first swinging bigay experience

OK. I'm setting out to record the story of the most fantastic adventure that I have had in my life. As any good historical account must go, I need to include the background info -- kind of setting the scenario...About six years ago my wife, Brittany, and I had come to a kind of agreement -- we could have a lover if our spouse agreed. Ok, I know that sounds a bit ridiculous -- who would expect a someone to ever agree to an affair by their spouse?? We didn't necessarily have someone in mind,...

ChemTechs Legacy Chapter 10 Matildas Story

Chem-Tech's Legacy - Chapter 10 - Matilda's Story "Belle," I heard a sing song voice chirp from another room. "Wakey wakey Belle!" I woke up in an oversized cat bed with pink sheets. Where the hell was I? And who was Belle? Oh yeah. I'm Belle. Or at least that's what my psychotic "owner" Melody has named me. I was wearing the frilly pink nightie that she had leant me for the night and my hair tied back in a pony tail.. I only had the one dress that I was wearing when I first...

Arab Neighbor Part 1

At eighteen, I was an only child of two professional parents who worked a lot.  We lived in an upscale neighborhood.  My family was not rich, but well-to-do.  My father had his own business and was very keen that I work hard and understand the value of money.  To this end, I earned my own money by taking care of the lawn and pool for a couple of houses in our neighborhood including our own.I was pretty tall for my age, six feet, but still quite thin at one hundred sixty pounds.  I had a...

Just What I Needed

It’s been a while since I’ve written, but the mood struck as I sit on the back deck on a beautiful, but hot Father’s Day morning. It’s a wonderful day as I sit here in my T-shirt and panties, my gorgeous teen yo daughter sunbathing topless with almost thong bottoms (yes, our backyard is 100% private. No one can see us), awaiting the arrival of my 24 & 28 year old daughters. Very rarely do I get to see them all on the same day. My girlfriend is cooking in a semi-sheer gown, nude underneath....

Long haired guy in my neighborhood

So, I live in a townhome that is surrounded by a ton of other townhomes. It's very close living and the only space between each building is only wide enough to fit one car, truck etc. So this guy in the neighborhood would be out with his k**, letting the k** ride their bike etc and 90% of the time, he was shirtless. He is HOT! My ideal rough, rugged, manly kind of guy - the kind you know is wild in the bedroom. I wanted him. I had to have him. We would exchange smiles, or wave to each other in...

CharlieChapter 16

I was talking to Henry about our plans to go to the circus. We were all going to meet at a restaurant afterwards for dinner. He had met Janice at the gym and liked her. The morning of the circus, I met with Ann and Janice on the fairway. Jack and Henry spent five dollars seeing who was strongest by swinging a sledge hammer at a lever. It shot a weight up a pole and rang a bell. Both of them managed to ring the bell but Henry's was the loudest. Jack won a Teddy bear for Ann by throwing darts...

My sister Ashley chapter 10

“Do what?” We had just stepped out of the shower and sagged onto the couch, it wasn’t an uneventful shower to say the least. And I was more exhausted after that than after she had pulled that devil move on me. “Hate each other one minute and then hate each other when I have to chase you down for sex.” I chuckled softly and adjusted myself on the couch. She was just wearing her little pink bathrobe and I had my cheek on her bare thigh, watching the television. “And why is that by...

My Twin to the Rescue Part 7

My Twin to the Rescue Part 7 The ride took about thirty minutes. As they rode along, Ken kept asking Peter for details but he would not say anything. Instead he just smiled at her. That fact frustrated her but she put up with it because she could not do anything else. The parking lot for the restaurant was a bit crowded so Peter had to park back near the farthest edge from the building. As he shut off the motor, Peter told Ken to not open the door. Quickly getting out of the...

MyFamilyPies Lola Fae Family Time Capsule

Lola Fae and her stepbrother Lucky Fae made a time capsule way back when, and now it’s time to open it. They spend some time reminiscing about all the stuff that’s in there. Lucky finds a piece of paper that Lola says is an entry she ripped out of her diary. She doesn’t want to read it, but Lucky insists. When Lola gives in, it turns out it was really sexual about a mystery man. Lucky initially thinks Lola wrote the entry about his dad, but it turns out that it was really...

TNWS01 The Girl With The Voice of an AngelChapter 21 Naked in the Hot Tub

Jessie Harper was just dozing off in to a lovely warm and dreamy kind of sleep in the hot tub when she heard the click and slide of the door opening. She opened her eyes to see her best friend, Kate Terrence, standing in the doorway. As Jessie looked she knew there was something not quite right with what she was seeing. Then it came to her. Her best friend wasn’t naked. Instead she was wearing a nice tight pair of shorts and a blue half top that exposed her lovely flat stomach and midriff...

New Boss New Punishments

My name is Sasha Munster (SissyMunster to my friends) I work a lot in telesales.Part of my job role is talking to international customers on busy office phonelines.I got the job becuase of my exceptional communication skills, but becuase I was willing to use my oral skills for a lot more than just sweet talking to customers and staff. To say my previous boss was very laid back would be an overstatement. He liked the staff to do all the work and seldom came to the office at all. His name was...
